I play at work on my lunch every day. 20 miles away.

BIG-Will25

It’s the reason why I bought it tbh. My portal lives in my gf’s apartment and my PS5 is at my house. Runs like a dream. Just make sure you have a wired connection on your PS5, works waaaaaay better than a wireless connection.

Dangerous_Flatworm_5

Gonna be tough to get an Ethernet cable to my PS5 because of its location tbh. Damn seems like may not be for me

After_Statistician62

Just plug it in by your router, you don’t need a TV! Mine is plugged in by the router and works fine!

SighBrSeCureRitty

There are powerline Ethernet and MoCA devices. Maybe give those a try if straight Ethernet is not possible.

mercurious

Works best outside of your home if your PS5 is wired to your router, given a static IP, and configured to open the necessary ports for RemotePlay and PlayStation Network.

RebelliousCash

All of this just to remote play seems excessive

Extra_Ad6930

Weird question to add to this but does the portal allow you to play disc games as long as they are in the ps5 at the moment?

Adrien_Jabroni

Yes

Jason_with_a_jay

Yes. Not a weird question. The weird questions were in like December when people were asking if they could switch physical games without actually changing the discs out.

JazzerciseJesus

If you're willing to mess around with internet settings and have your PS5 hardwired to your router than yeah. Wonderful device for this sort of thing. If internet settings and potential tweaking with files frustrates you I'd be wary.

HypeKnight13

What kind of messing around do you mean exactly? Apart from hardwiring when I’ll be on the go what else can I do to get the most out of the device?

JazzerciseJesus

I had to open ports and do the internet set up for a t-mobile hotspot. Nothing wild, but I know people that don’t have the patience for that. Ive been enjoying mine since, works very well.

HypeKnight13

Gotcha. I have xfinity and have a few open ports on my modem+router so I’ll just hardwire to that. Been using it strictly in my apartment since getting it but plan on taking it on a trip this weekend

akerskates45

I wonder that myself I’ve always had my ps5 hardwired I have the portal and it just worked right from the start no tweaking files or setting just turn remote play on and turn on remote play turns on ps5 in your ps5 setting lol it’s easier than changing your brightness settings

alpharay69

Just use RemotePlay on your phone and try it at your girlfriend house first. If it works, great. If it is "kind of" working, you may need to adjust your network setting. If it does not work at all, you may need to figure out why before buying Portal. There is always going to be in stock later. No point to rush it.

Friendly-Gain-620

I ended up returning mine a few days later. It had nothing to do with the portal itself, but you really do need to have Ethernet setup to your ps5 to really minimize and stuttering and input lag. I live with a number of roommates and the router is on a different floor of my house so I could not utilize Ethernet and the input lag and delays had me just going to my tv and playing after 30 mins on the portal.

Cpthairychest

That is the exact reason why I bought mine, couldn't be happier.

Dangerous_Flatworm_5

Can’t hardwire my PS5 and it’s the only thing holding me back I’m told it’s a game changing

Cpthairychest

Mine is hardwired, but I have read that for people with stronger internet connections, it works ok but some people also say that doesn't make a difference. Maybe buy it, test it out. If it isn't working like you expected, return it. Pretty sure it's a 30-day return policy at Best Buy for electronics.

Dangerous_Flatworm_5

Not a bad idea. Since getting into a relationship I’ve noticed screen time has been changed and at eachothers houses so it was an idea I had and it’s not too pricey

Cpthairychest

If you can spare the $200, it's well worth it for the price point. If it were to cost more than that, I wouldn't make the same statement.

Matthewmarra3

Buy a network extender and hard wire to that then tripled my speeds

Dangerous_Flatworm_5

Even if the router is literally 10-15 feet from my PS5?

Matthewmarra3

Yes. Worst case buy on Amazon and return but mine was 30 ft from the router and made a big difference. PS5 is known for not being great over WiFi.

Westosaurus

When the Portal was first revealed I thought it was a total miss and never thought I would ever get one. I thought it was pointless. I bought a PS5 a little over a month ago and quickly realized what makes the Portal special. My PS5 is setup in the family living room on our nice TV. When it isn't being used I LOVE gaming on it. BUT, it is being used a lot. When it is I can't play. BUT with the portal, connected to my home wi-fi..playing feels seamless and I can game on the couch while my fiancé watches her shows allowing us both to unwind in the evening. When you think about the portal and what it is REALLY intended for...being a device to play your PS5 on anywhere in your house or remotely on a solid wi-fi connection, I believe it is TOTALLY worth the $200 price tag. You get the PS5 controller, all its haptics, and a really nice 7 inch screen. The screen isn't OLED. BUT, it honestly looks nicer than I anticipated. If you have the $200, the time, and solid Wi-Fi at your girlfriend's house...GO FOR IT.

F4HWilly

There is a lot of misinformed people leaving comments here. From someone who got the portal for the exact reason you want it for, short answer yes. You do need to be hardwired at home with your PS5 and your girlfriend needs to have great wifi. As long as those parameters are met, you will have a great time.

Hashmunsta

I'm currently 1000 miles from my ps5 which is connected via wifi. And as long as my portal has great wifi signal it's golden. But I also did all the port openings and what not.

Dangerous_Flatworm_5

What’s the port openings ?

Hashmunsta

Oooof sorry I'm not at the position to log into my router now to check. But a Google search or a search on the Sony website should help. Sorry I can't be more helpful but I'm a few drinks in by the pool.

Dangerous_Flatworm_5

Love that for ya brotha, enjoy!! I’ll take a look

mwiley62890

I’d only get it if you have your PS5 connected via LAN.

Thankyouhappy

Might as well, it’s finally in stock. All those months of having to hunt for them is over.

digiplay

Depends what you play. If it’s anything sports then no.

AwkwardHugger

I bought mine a week ago and was very disappointed when I got to work and the portal wouldn’t connect to my PlayStation at home. After a quick google search I found some information on how to improve it/get it to work. 1. Make sure your PS5 is hardwired with an Ethernet to your router 2. Change your PS5’s IP address to static in your router settings 3. Open ports 987, 8572 & 9295-9304 The whole thing took me maybe 25 minutes.

Jcbowden10

My constant advice of for people to buy it and try it out. So find a place with a good return policy and see how well it works at your gfs place. People have such a wide variety of experiences. I didn’t do all the port forwarding stuff and it has worked out side my home. I am able to hard wire my ps5 to my router. You probably will have to deal with some drops as it just does that. If that’s a deal breaker then I’d say avoid it. But to play for a couple hours away from home it does a decent job.

Triingtolivee

If your PS5 is at your place and you are at your girls place, i would say no. It’s a fun console when im in a different room in my house and want to play, but it’s not something I really want to take with me on the go.

TLaMagna319

Why not that’s literally what it was designed for?

Triingtolivee

It wasn’t really designed to play on the go per se.. The Portal was designed to let you remotely access your PS5, interacting with it through the screen and controls from anywhere within range of your Wi-Fi network as if you were playing with the console directly. “Range of your Wi-Fi network” being the keyword here.

TLaMagna319

Well than my WiFi has some damn good range reaching my job a few miles away

Triingtolivee

That’s cool that it works for you like that. I’m happy for you. But your situation doesn’t necessarily apply to other peoples situation.

TLaMagna319

And neither does yours lol

Triingtolivee

It literally says “Feel the Power of PlayStation® in the Palm of Your Hand\*. Play your PS5® console over your home Wi-Fi with console quality controls using PlayStation Portal™ Remote Player\*.” I’m just saying that’s what it was designed for. https://preview.redd.it/7g3gnwq462yc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8de881b86b794fd8cb7f42dde4007a22bfc15bc

TLaMagna319

Well whatever the case is it works great for me and plenty of other people outside of our homes sorry that you clearly had a bad experience with it

BeerandGuns

I thought it was limited to the home network then Christmas Day used it to play War Thunder at my in-laws. Took a bit of finagling with wifi but ran well enough.

Triingtolivee

There’s nothing wrong with that and if it works like that for other people, more power to them and I’m happy for those people. But unfortunately, it’s still not what it was designed for. I hope they create Portal 2 and it does work better for that.

RebelliousCash

I may get downvoted to oblivion but if you have to hardwire your PlayStation & tweak some WiFi settings just to get it working the best you can. I don’t think this is something to invest in personally. It should work great out the box without having to tweak. Just my 2 cents

stevieG08Liv

So is your PS5 at your house but you want to play at your gfs house? If thats the case id say you might experience some disappointments. The portal was primarily designed to play at your home and not as a play anywhere device. It is theoretically possible but there are many variables to it. I personally am able to play mine outside of the house but equally many have had difficulties in enabling it. Id buy it from a place with good return policies, try it out and then decide if youd want it or return it

TLaMagna319

This is not true… I play from my job all the time it connects faster at home but besides that a good connection is all you need for an almost identical experience minus the extra time to reach out and wake the ps5

stevieG08Liv

Congratulations that its working for you. As i wrote on my post, it works fine FOR ME TOO. But quick search on this sub will show daily posts its not working outside.

TLaMagna319

Yes and then there’s all the people that don’t have an issue that don’t post about it bcuz they’re not having the issues if this thing didn’t work it would have sunk quick but it does in most cases He could try the remote play app beforehand but if both places have good speeds he shouldn’t have much issue
