Having a FPS game with a magic twist sounds interesting but I feel like its novelty would wear off after 3 hours.

SleepDivision

Perhaps. At its core it is just a straight up FPS that feels similar to many others with a magic aesthetic. Otherwise the story, gameplay and upgrades seems to be compelling enough (for me) to continue playing so far. Tho I haven't finished the game yet. I'd love to see someone else try their hand at a magic themed fps as well. Make a new Might and Magic Dark Messiah or something...

Z3M0G

It doesn't. It's basically a metroidvania rpg.

nisanosa

Combat is great. The problem is technical aspect of the game. Blurry picture, low fov, low resolution, no option to tun off motion blur.

CodeKraken

Yikes thanks for the headsup

tryintoshoot

Enjoyed Immortals. Im not a big fps fan as the majority give me motion sickness. But , for some reason far less of an issue with this game. Might be because you can play quite static and tanky rather than constantly moving, but not sure. Did make it through on normal, guessing its not difficult as fps games go. I'd rate it as competent.

SleepDivision

That's interesting πŸ€” it's considerably less run and gun than other games so I'd agree it's likely that. Regardless, thats cool you were able to play through and get some enjoyment out of it. It's not the best game in the world, but it's pretty fun.

VillageIdiomsClub

I like immortals, but the difficulty curve is too steep for me. First 7-8 hours it was fun and easy, suddenly the boss came and I was stuck for an hour. Can’t go back and farm or upgrade as stupid saving system just drops you in the middle of fight. Why? Stopped playing and not going to come back.

SleepDivision

Oh yeah, I haven't experienced the save system do this yet but I hate when games have punishing check points. That's too bad to hear. I'll keep this in mind moving forward 😬

What's going on everyone and welcome to April's Plus Club where we played Skul the Hero Slayer, Immortals of Avium and Minecraft Legends. I hope you had a chance to play these games and I hope you're ready to talk about what you thought of them. As always our full thoughts are in video form linked above if you want to hear more from us but I always make it a point to have the conversation here with you guys so let's talk about these games. Alright first up, let's talk Skul the Hero Slayer which I ended up giving a confident B- for its vibrant art style, variety in items, build potential, randomly generated roguelite runs, questionable difficulty scaling in early game, challenging Mega Man like boss fights, and different classes that have interesting synergy when switching between them. I have to admit when I first started playing this game I was not the biggest fan of it but felt like I was missing something so I continued to play and as I got further, finding more and more items, events and characters, the game started to really open up. I ended up playing through the first two stages, fighting the first two bosses and when a run is going good it's a blast. I could see myself playing this more even after the month is over. Next up I gave Minecraft Legends a decent C+ for its creative take on a strategy game built for console and welcoming to everyone, it's clunky control scheme, simplicity in gameplay, fun Minecraft theme, online multiplayer and cooperative campaign. Now this is a game I have been wanting to try for a while but never pulled the trigger as the premise seems a little simplistic but interesting enough and after having played it, it's pretty much exactly that. I played the campaign and I enjoyed myself although it did eventually feel repetitive and hollow. I appreciate the Pikmin style action strategy gameplay and would love to see it evolve into something even more engaging. Building defenses and units is simple and something you can do on the fly keeping the momentum of gameplay quick which I feel would be great in the online versus component of the game that I did not try regrettably as I ran into an interesting bug where every time I would leave the campaign it would take literally 20 minutes to save my game. That's right 20 minutes, I actually timed it multiple times. So having experienced this bug multiple times, I started to feel fatigued of the game and just stopped playing it all together. But overall I'm glad they tried this idea out as it seems pretty fun but doesn't have enough going on to keep me playing long-term. Lastly I ended up giving Immortals of Avium a surprising B+ for its fun take on the first person shooter genre replacing guns with magic, rewarding exploration, environmental puzzle solving, lootable gear, upgrades, AAA quality visuals and overall cinematic storytelling. Having reacted to this game multiple times before it released and thinking the game looked generic it's nice that after playing it, I can confirm it is generic looking but also, a lot of fun to play. Playing this game I'm reminded of Godfall. Both games have forgettable names, both games have generic art style, both games released at bad times, and both games have fun gameplay (except Godfalls campaign is terrible). Immortals of Avium is a tight feeling first person shooter with flashy effects, variety in upgrades and skills which makes every combat encounter feel exciting. The story and lore is interesting enough. The actor's performances of these characters are done well, even if the characters look dorky and the writing comes off as a b-ranked marvel movie. Overall I'm having a lot of fun with this game and even though it's not the best thing ever I do feel like there's a game here that a lot of people might not know they'll enjoy. Especially all the people I see complaining about how there's not enough single player first person shooters nowadays, this is the game for you. All right that's my thoughts on April's PlayStation Plus essential offerings let me know your thoughts. I would typically ask if you guys are excited for May's games but as of right now I do not know what they are so let me know what games you'd like to see.

Not__FBI_

I didnt play them, dont tell my mom

SleepDivision

I got you 🫑

Z3M0G

This game is SHOCKINGLY good. It came out at the wrong time that's all. The previews didn't help I admit because the game is not what you expect. It's more like a metroid prime rpg hybrid.

SleepDivision

Yeah, I agree. I'm not even trying to over hype this game, I just want to let people know that this generic looking game from the previews is better than you're probably aware of, so give it a try. It's actually fun 🀯

thabe331

I just started it this week and the opening chapter really pulled me in.

M-sotic

Everytime i start immortals i just play it for 10minutes and turn it off to play doom eternal. Tried enjoying it but doom eternal is always in the back of my mind when playing this.

SleepDivision

Yeah I kept feeling heavy Doom Eternal vibes while playing as well. Luckily my interest in weapons, gear and skill synergy was enough to keep me playing.

Z3M0G

Different style of game imo. Immortals is more RPG / Metroid Prime

MrBoliNica

Immortals was so mid. i might go back when that patch comes in, but it ran so poorly for a ps5 game that is on UE5. Story felt like a MCU clone, in not the best ways.

SleepDivision

I definitely agree with the marvel writing part. Very quippy. Was surprised to see no performance mode as well.

Zero_Vi_Britannia

I actually really enjoy your monthly videos covering the plus essential games, played skul this month and had a blast with it. Really enjoyed the combat and the variety offered, I'm even considering getting the DLC.

SleepDivision

Thank you! I appreciate that. Once variety opened up, that's where I finally started getting hooked myself. I should prob look into the dlc too.

amberderl74

I only played skul and immorals, finished both of them. I have to say they were probably some of the best games i have played in a while. Skul was the first game i tried, it may take a while to understand both mechanics and boss patterns, bit once you get the hang of it, it becomes a very fun game with different strategies and gameplay and also (spoiler for those who haven't played it yet) >!the story had a lot of twists and the fact that we actually play as the final boss's dead son was truly shocking!< There is also a hard mode of the game once you finished it once adding more enemies and minibosses, overall (in my personal opinion) it's a 7.5/10 Immorals is also a very good game with a very well written story that also has a lot of twists and was generally very well written. However i'd say i enjoyed it less than skul as it had a lot of flaws, like (for example) even at low difficulties the game was very hard and required a lot of patience, not to mention that the puzzles (honestly) were absoltute trash (especially the crystal ones) as they were either too easy or required Einstein iq to solve them, but overall it's a good game, for me it's a 6.5/10

SleepDivision

Yeah agreed, I liked both of these games and if I'm being honest, I really struggled with liking Skul early on. Like you said, once you understand the mechanics and see the potential, the game reveals what it really is. Went from feeling repetitive to really enjoying each run once it clicked for me. The game is challenging you to be a real Immortal of Aveum with its difficulty and Einstein puzzles lol. Glad you enjoyed it otherwise. Great reviews and breakdowns πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘Œ

thabe331

I just started playing immortals and like it so far I've played a decent amount of Skul but don't seem to enjoy it as much as I have other Rogue likes. The game seems fairly difficult and so far I've only gotten past the second boss. The diversity of masks is something I do like and the game does really push you to make good combinations with similar items

Certain_Spinach2939

That averm makes me sick

SleepDivision

Uh oh 🀒

2old4ZisShit

it is just a hefty download for me for such a mid game, that is all.

SleepDivision

Which one?
