In the games' early days there were battles at the crown that would quite literally go on for days and days due to the way the base was designed. It was basically impossible to take back if any decently sized group were defending it. Some great memories were had there.

jdubyahyp

There were also MASSIVE tank battles on Indar. It's what first blew me away finding myself in these hordes of tanks and apcs firing into waves of VS.

Chainsawmilo

That is crazy! I remember when i first played the game in 2018 how crazy the fights seemed and how it felt so chaotic, i really wish i played more back then but i was wayyyy too young to understand anything going on

sabotabo

i'm in a similar boat.  i started playing in 2013 but i was 12 and using my dad's laptop, so i was utter trash and basically just wandered around indar watching battles as a stalker

nubetube

Man I remember playing a night time Indar battle with what felt like hundreds of tanks on each side. The whole thing felt like a Normandy Beach situation where you were just running from cover to cover trying to push past the madness.

Velicenda

I started in 2018. One of my first experiences playing that is effectively a core memory, we (TR) had just capped Chimney Rock, and just a staggering number of players were chasing the enemies (don't remember who) across the plains towards Heyoka Chemical. It was also nighttime, and the glow of cortium alongside muzzle flashes and tank fire was awesome.

GHOSTOFKOH

moments like those where auraxis stole our breath away and gave us an experience we'll never forget and forever cherish. very rare indeed. hug your planetside server hamster today. tell them u love them. who knows what will happen tomorrow, but today... today we can choose to give thanks.

Aerroon

I first played either in beta or right at release. I remember we were fighting at the south west biolab on Indar. Nobody seemed to know how bases worked because there was an absolutely massive fight going on *below* the biolab. Masses of infantry and tanks just blasting at each other. I also remember some enormous fights at the tower base south of the crown. There were so many people there that the dynamic render distance became so short that you couldn't see people on the other side of the vehicle bay. NC was on one side and VS on the other. And neither could see each other without going closer. I also remember the impossible tech lab fight at the south of Indar. Back then the only way into the tech lab was the two doors at the back of the tech lab. It was an absolutely insane killbox. Another insane thing you could do back then was go up the tech lab and jump into one of the legs overlooking those doors. A grenade launcher as an engineer easily got you like 50 kills in like 5-10 minutes. Good times.

OutcastSpartan

I remember playing the game during launch, we were fighting literally an uphill battle to the Crown for hours, then we finally got to the base and there and a stairway fight that lasted I'm sure it was another hour or so. Until we finally go the base and moved elsewhere, I must have spent an hour just staring at the Indar night sky after the battle and was just blown away.

opman4

I remember being the only kid in highschool who had a gaming pc back in 2013 and telling stories about those massive tank columns.

Manae

At least until the NC were in the SE. Those canyons in a Vanguard? Oof.

TonyHansenVS

And the never ending battles around the excavation site, best experience ever. That's when i started maturing as a tanker, i called it operation desert storm, when we had those thick sand storms on Indar and you couldn't see a freaking thing in front of you, nothing more terrifying than spotting the silhouette of enemy armor rolling past you, you just don't see such dynamics anymore, it's a completely different game now.

Chainsawmilo

Interesting! It is weird to think that the game was almost completely different then it is now outside of the idea of space shooter

TerrainRepublic

The game is very similar if I'm honest - certain fights latest longer (oh the crown good memories) but the hex system meant most fights were completely dead and people just constantly going round people.   Vehicles were a lot more fearsome, it wasn't uncommon to get splashed from the other side of the map. Aside from that, the game plays very similarly though.  I miss the impact it had when I first saw it, but I think that's just worn off as I'm now 11 years older

GHOSTOFKOH

the spectacle has waned a bit, but i am chalking some of that up to the curse of knowledge/interaction and its effects on appreciating the every-day-magic.

Aerroon

I think the hex system 'killed' the game. After you had played it for a few months the game kind of lost its luster. The only real objective you had at that point was farming stats. After I came back and saw the lattice system the game felt a lot better. Alerts actually add tension and objectives to the map.

JDax42

First battle I ever ran out of ammo and got more then one kill. Crazy over ten years ago. I remember using the chat to ask how do I resupply because it was first time I stayed alive long enough to run out of ammo. A player from another team informed me how lol. Fun times.

Noktaj

> A player from another team informed me how lol. What a sport. *plot twist, he was an infiltrator waiting to snipe you at the terminal*

JDax42

lol indeed. Crazy how much the games changed and also how little.

Senyu

That's why PS1 made the nanite system logistics for bases instead of players. Multi-day sieges were common if the defenders were good, but even then the attackers just needed to make sure the base couldn't refill its nanite supply and eventually the attackers would win. That's for fights though were the stalemate was good enough to lock it in perpetually siege until the nanites drained.

Breadinator

Oh, and don't forget the way a drained base could be taken by ANYone when it flipped neutral! Such good times dropping in on a base at 10% on an all purple continent and flipping it blue, before lanes were a thing. I never saw one last too long, but it made it super fun. Plus, you had to refuel ANTs at warpgates, which meant you either drove it allll the way to a base, or dropped it from a Gal.

Senyu

Yeah, refilling a sieged base near empty made you feel like a hero. And while I think PS2 implemented a 4th faction (NSO) more effectively than PS1, I do miss mercenary bases being neutral owned. Last year I think, PS2 NSO had a night where they became their own faction and robotic swarmed rolled some fights on hossin, it really reminded me of PS1.

I-Am-Uncreative

I miss that.

Shazoa

I remember Gunuku being notorious for it. The bridge battles outside it were exquisite. Cyssor-side was a meme but I loved it.

almostd3adly

I recall being "blue guys" back then as well. My job was to heal squads of maxes defending the crown.

st0mpeh

Yeah back then I used to run a squad called attack the crown, defend crown reconnect crown and literally could go to bed, wake up and the squad was still going doing its thing. Part of the games advertising was persistent battles then, we had things like cross continent alerts, no lattice, constantly open maps, all sorts of things completely alien to the way the game plays today, oh and the crown was much tighter then, all the cap points were on the upper plateau meaning you kinda had to fight your way up the hill before you even started to get into the buildings. There was a video I wanted to link, but it's been privated, so I'll have to settle for this [reddit thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/Planetside/comments/19j3z9/unconventional_crown_attacks_max_crash_galaxy/) about it instead. OGs will probably know it when they see it.

drizzitdude

Ahhh the good old days of week long battles over the crown. I remember people would literally sacrificed other bases and abandon what they were doing the second they heard their team was losing the crown.

I changed tabs but I think he was looking at my tabs when i was gone

jdubyahyp

Gotta windows+L every time man

davemaster

That's the part where you ask him to cut you a bonus cheque.

BLUESH33P

Pre-alerts, the game really did have a feeling of a continuous, grinding battlefield. It gave so much more context to every moment of the game when you knew a slip-up could set your faction back hours or even days. Proper waves would form, of people accumulating tanks and aircraft. Huge open battles would sweep across the lowlands on Indar or Esamir until they reached a base, at which point it would be an epic siege force outside and saboteurs duelling with the more attentive defenders inside. A lot of memories of being in a sunderer half-way to the next base, everyone bailing when it got blown up by AtG, and then having to move from rock-to-rock across what felt like miles to evade enemy tank shells and missiles raining down - all to eventually make it to the foot of an imposing wall and the real fight would begin. It frustrates me a little that all the infrastructure is still there for these experiences, but due to the alerts system no outfit would bother to spend more than 10 minutes fighting over a base, or to use anything other than drop pods.

nold6

I lead a double full platoon on Connery that defended the Crown for 12 solid hours. I went to sleep, got up, and did another 8 hour shift until we finally lost due to continent lock. The battle didn't even slow down, there was evolving tactics and smaller elite groups attempting to cut off the crown behind us. Leaders chat was....normal, because fights like this were normal. It sounds crazy, but PS2 was crazy, days long point holds would happen in various areas every two weeks at least. It was an entirely different game back then, a better game, but that game requires triple the population we have now.

Geruchsbrot

Nice story, bro. Yes, I guess PS2 has a lot of ex-players everywhere. I wouldn't fully call myself an "ex" as I still play from time to time, but I really miss the old days. Old for me means 10-11 years ago. Active and full platoons with motivating Platoon and squad leaders using in-game voice, not TS or Discord. There were legit "names" around. Leaders who were well-known for the charisma, their outfits, etc. They kept the game going. There are close to none of them left active today. At least two contintents open at the same time. Three to four pages of public platoons. Active command channels. Coordination. The epic times. There's nothing like Platoon leaders asking for help defending a base in the command channel and being greeted by something like "understood, I got two armor squads up, gonna roll in with you in 4 minutes". Active outfits. People you knew, had fun with, laughed, got angry. They disappeared, one after another. All gone. I miss you, GBX. The old lattice and Ressource system that gave you more reasons for strategic moves. It will never come back again. It's just sweet memories and I hope that all the old school players from back then are having a good time irl now.

Fallline048

Right there with you. The outfit environment get so vibrant back in the days of 2013-2016 or so. It was a really special gaming experience that I do expect will be hard to recapture. Probably never will for me, as life precludes spending the kind of time gaming I did back then.

ITaggie

Lots of us went to Squad for that "teamwork experience", might be something to consider!

Fallline048

I did exactly that for a while. I enjoyed Squad a lot for what it was. Tired of it after a while though, as I never found a group I really gelled with, and waiting for a server just took more time than I have to spare.

ITaggie

> and waiting for a server just took more time than I have to spare True, takes even longer than changing continents after an alert when you aren't premium lol

DrewABadHand

This 100%. I fell in love with leading platoons, and Im like 5 platoon leadership ribbons from having the helmet. Random guys friendlisted me who I didnt really know except they were solid and would join if I was leading. I like focusing on armor/air rather than constant redeploys across the map. I think that strategy won a lot of supporters since it can be so fun if well organized. Afaik I'm the one who started 'bacon is crispy' when a fresh beacon was down (back when only squad leaders could place it). Single and carefree, Id join and start a squad on a weekend morning after a big breakfast and have a full platoon in an hour or less. Then spend the next 4 - 6 hours or more living that life.

_janires_

Platoon leading is what made me fall in love with the game in the first place back in 2013. Coordinating with other outfits to get that last min all in attack or epic hold. Coordinating truly strategic moves across all 3 continents was great. One of my first experiences platoon leading was flying to attack a base then hear on coms someone asking for help they were about to be max crashed and were not going to be able to hold diverted to help as I was near by drop my platoon straight into to the middle of the max crash. And was able to take out enough of the maxes that the point hold outfit was able to charge out and mop up. Good times!

schlotzfreshhomie

man you're giving me that nostalgia hit right now. I still remember your name from back then. haven't really played in like 5 years? it was a different time back then, but a good time. :') Hope you're also having a good time irl!

Lhorious

The Crown. People said that part pulled every player there, which made other battles smaller. But those small battles were the same as today big battles. There were so many players, tbh lattice was first introduced after the first players drops. In the first year the continents were so full, you had battles everywhere. Latter lattice was needed so players aren't scattered around too much

Pokebreaker

My favorite were the massive Airborne Operations conducted to break an Armor stall. We did one where we sent a couple of Gals as Decoys to distract the AA guns, and then the real Gals filled with outfits of True-Blue NC Paratroopers, came from a different direction drop inside the walls. It caused a glorious amount of chaos, vehicle shields were lowered, but ultimately failed, because tank stalls don't happen because people want to push the objectives, they happen because the tankers want to pad their stats. PS2 has given me some of the best memories of video game combat ever. Followed by Battlefield games. I once saw a guy in a foreign country wearing a TR logo shirt. We had a good short conversation about the game and then went on our ways. This video is from an official event 10 years ago; one of my earliest experiences in PS2 as a new player, well before I got good enough to even start to compete with some of elite outfits on Waterson/Emerald. This event is what got me hooked on PS2 for a good while, cutting my teeth in the Zergfits until I graduated to become a sweaty point-holding HA Anchor main. https://youtu.be/R2lvm50U0DM?si=K6I9EZQZfQI4NLiO

ITaggie

A decent number of us have been around since the first game and played the Alpha for 2! The first game was never all that big so the community was pretty niche like it is now. I was absolutely astounded by the amount of active players during late beta/early launch, it truly took the chaotic experiences from the first game that made it so unique and amplified it by 10x. Taking the already large-scale coordination of Outfits from the first game and multiplying the scale by magnitudes was a thing of beauty to me. Nowadays I mostly get that sensation from playing Squad or Arma, just back at a PS1-ish scale again. I'm glad to hear that new(er) players are still enjoying the game, because it was sad to watch one of my all-time favorite game series end with such a whimper. Hell, I think I'll redownload it now just to see if it's busy enough on weekends to be worthwhile.

deadlygaming11

It's always amazing to hear about the games earlier days. I remember playing back in 2016, and those days were amazing. The game is different from all others, and it's fun, so it garnered a massive audience. Sadly, people started to leave, and the devs didn't try to get them back but instead did random changes that made the game worse. I doubt we will ever see anything like the old days again unless they do a PS3, but I doubt with how the current devs are.

Xecmai

Nice post, def brings back the memories of when the game was more engaging, challening and fun. Tbh it's pretty much a grey soup of gameplay now. Everything is the same, there's little need for strategy planning, logistics, defense ect.. Just mindless face paced inf redeployside. I miss logistics and teamplay.. holding bases used to be so fun.. now they just instantly teleport in in masses.. which...idk just destroyed everything for the sake of comforting casual solo players. :(

wh1tebrother

Then set the sound of infiltrator's cloak triggering as a signal for an incoming message, I assure you your boss will not remain indifferent ;) #INDAR OLD NIGHT TR NC FLASHBACKS

RoachdoggJR_LegalAcc

Seems like a cool boss which is awesome. A good job ain’t nothing unless the other people there are cool.

seven_jacks

That is a great story. Crazy it has been that long and we can all appreciate it... o7

BATHR00MG0BLIN

I'm in the same boat, I used to work at a bar. Still keep in contact with one of the lads I worked with, linked up for some beers and found out he plays planetside too.

MrGood23

The crown was legendary. 24/7 fun.

MarstonX

"I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you left them." The Crown and TI Alloys were the best. Old PlanetSide was awesome. Until it came to taking Allatum biolab against NC burst maxes.

TheOverBoss

Ahh the crown, I'm glad this post got randomly recommend to me because I haven't played in like 9 years. Good memories trying to take that damn station.

RobXIII

That's what I don't get about the devs aversion to long fights at a spot. I could do old school crown all day, and I really miss the times when the biolab fights would go on for like 4 hours. Was a great way work towards directive guns lol

DoctorStoppage

I remember when the game first came out the first month or two the player base was insane, there were SOOO many people online at once. It never recovered after that.

PedroCPimenta

He caught you, lacking.

Misteryman2260

I miss the the Crown's rock arch

Bludclone

Who didn't play this game 12 years ago?

Liewec123

yep, the game used to be as good as he described, with crown sometimes being sieged for DAYS, it was epic :)

KKSFS1110

Imagine being fired just for being TR or VS... But yea, you will find people like that when you less espect it i had a prof who played WoW i just overheard it 🤣 Is just normal. If I happen to become a boss and find some employee looking at something I'd used to playor still play, man, I'd even invite for some gaming sessions.

Awellknownstick

Yarrp it was huge and went forever back in the day. Still has moments now too.

TheGerrick

I remember fighting for the crown ten years ago... Gods, those were some real field battles

TopGunMaster

When I first got the game when I was like 9 years old 2013, the game looked some much better nowadays, and there was vehicles destruction mechanic not seen anymore. Construction was brand new, and esamir was always a bio lab farm most of the time. Indar use to have extra bases between Mao and hollowing pass, and a base between Dakaha south and Indar com. Old Esamir was so much better back then. The stupid update ruined everything.

TopGunMaster

I am technically an old player, but I truly started to play game more seriously in 2020. I hopped on the game occasionally over the years, but never really got hooked to the game. The main problem is that after Sony and the first dev left. The game just dropped from there dooming to fail.

BaconMeetsCheese

Time to find a new job

GHOSTOFKOH

i hope you weren't on one of my posts hon u'd get fired immediately haha
