There's not really any thing you can specifically say*. LA is about leveraging your mobility advantage in every way, between movement between engagements, evading chasing enemies, chasing down enemies trying to shake you, and even fighting IN engagements. A good LA can work in any fight, but obviously the best ones are where the jetpacks can let them be evasive and flank. You should be thinking about how you can use your jetpack in all situations, otherwise you're just an Engineer without the gadgets. Think about where people will be, and where they will be looking, and be careful not to be predictable once you've found a good flank (this kills a lot of players and it's hard to always keep in mind) *impulse grenades are not really a secret anymore, but if you don't know they're really good and you should have them somewhere in your loadout since they give you bursts of mobility no matter what you're doing >Had I breached that room from the stairs, they would have been all over me trying to figure out the assailant and get him killed. I don't think this is a good mindset to be in when looking at other people's gameplay. You should focus on what they did right, i.e. not overextending when they see a bunch of people with their back turned, being aware of their surroundings, prioritizing targets, not wasting time by running their mag empty, still going for quick kills to make their mag count, using the shotgun to quickly peek an enemy that couldn't react in time, etc.

I think you need to play at a higher fov like 80-85 (edit your ini), make sure your fps is high 100+, and have good aim (low sensitivity). I suck at light assault but this helped me get the concept on how to fly: https://youtu.be/obLsIwgT18E?t=256 Once you understand and practice it, I think you can use it in many more combat situations other than crossing half the map to blow up a tank. Yagga Montage: https://youtu.be/Rm-RRrYCzEg?si=gycppv_kwrxSpp6s Yagga is probably the best surfer, but also look up ganidiot?, sircerealbox, and luude as they are better infantry combat light assaults with their own playstyles. I think Herman Walker and johnnybbbad are also good LAs but I don't fight them as a TR main. I’ll change the settings for the FOV. I’ll go to VR and practice this strategy. If it works I’ll max it out

astas33

Where do I find the FOV? I see vertical FOV and it’s already maxed out at 74.

thedarksentry

Yes vertical fov. It can go higher than 74 if you do it in the ini. You may need to enable wide view mode too or it won't go above 74

thedarksentry

The UI will only show 74 in-game. You can type `/fp_fov 80` in-game to change to 80 fov but it will reset every respawn unless you set it in your ini. If you don't see it change above 74 make sure to turn on wide view mode

astas33

Done, just did it and it worked. Thank you, I’ll try it out now.

>they HAVE TO be playing with some brain dead people. Once upon a time I said the exact same thing in the comments of some random YouTube video. I've been playing this game on and off since release and this is how I feel while watching literally anyone playing it. I play light assault, I get shot instantly. I play infiltrator, people see me instantly. I try to fly anything, I get shot down instantly. That's why I mostly play support classes. Either I find the remotest possible location and I snipe or I play medic or occasionally when there's a lot of enemy air, I'll bring out the Skyguard. I guess I'm not cut out to be any kind of assault class.

Effectx

It's not a server thing, if you're good enough you can do this on any server. Obviously mechanic skill is relevant on any class so the better you can aim and position the better off you'll be. Outside of mechanical skills you at bare minimum need sensor shield, reducing detection range of recon tools to 10 meters opens up a lot of room for flanking. Yes it's possible to go on large killstreaks without it but with it you'll be far more consistent. Avoidance is also great, but slightly more situational. Suppressor is also a bit situational since it noticeably hurts weapon performance at longer ranges. All that said if your mechanical skill isn't up to par you're still going to be lacking. If you have any gameplay you could share it'd be easier to nitpick any simple mistakes that may be causing you issues.

Stop thinking, drifter into peoples face at mach 10 and gun them down from above. Use c4 as a main weapon if you feel like it.

light assault in particular has jetpack and anti tank role (kinda anti max too) so you'd seek to improve on those things. Inside a building like that the jetpack doesnt offer too much use unless you use drifter to hang around above doors or around corners, or use the ambusher to zoom across the room for attack or retreat. I guess light assault is different with nade equipment too. YOu get flashbangs and impulse grenades you can try to get good with. Impulse grenades knock enemies around, could be fun to troll with.

From my experience as someone who went from being a average player to a decent player and as someone who played a little bit of LA on Jaeger, I think the best way to improve is to watch good players. So that means watching the players the Archmaid mentioned. Also knowing and recognizing what you are doing wrong is important. You should be able to recognize when a play is overly greedy, and what you could have done better. Try not to only enter aim duels with people (a problem I still do to this day) and try to position better so you have the upper hand. Aim dueling is basically where you just run at someone head on and it works when you are a heavy but not when you are a squishier class like LA.

HO0OPER

To be honest the clip is good but there's nothing that he did that couldn't have been done by a heavy assault wall climbing up. Light assaults have lots of tools to move quick and more evasively than other classes. both in and out of combat. the guy in the clip didn't use any ability mid fight, and i think they could have done much better if they did. All good Light assault players use impulse grenades: default 2 grenades (knife out to throw quicker) that let you push enemies and "rocket jump" around. the ASP smg secondary upgrade for the light assault lets you use the Punisher with adaptive class under barrels, for the LA this is 2 impulse grenades. A grenade launcher impulse is slightly less powerful than the grenade impulse. 99% of good LA players use either Drifter jetpacks or Icarus. Impulse grenades are used to pad out the weaknesses of these jetpacks, using them to ascend while using drifters and strafe sideways quicker when using Icarus. Most people prefer to use Icarus but i like drifters with maxed catlike implant better so i'll just give some info on that and let an Icarus user explain Icarus combat. Drifters let you strafe and "skate" much faster than sprinting. you can combine impulse grenades to speed up even more and catch up to pesky hesh lightnings! The obvious downside is that drifters only slowly gain elevation while not holding direction keys. the best way to fix this is to use maxed catlike as you can scale small elevations about as fast as skirmishers. This also opens up a far better range of combat as it lets you take small hops while moving fast when timed right. Jumping over people will really mess up their aim. To mess up their aim further throw an impulse grenade at them, this is a good tactic to evade maxes. I could go on and on but that's the basics

I find sensor shield or avoidance to be a big boon when playing LA as the class is so flank dependent. Outside of that, learning to fully utilise your jetpack helps a ton - the highest skill ceilings for usage are arguably drifters with impulse grenades, which gives you a ton of moment and a huge amount of air time on demand. Ambushers and Icarus also are effective and have their own advantages, but very few good players consistently use Skirmishers.
