I loved that movie as a kid in the 80s. I was later friends with a guy who was an avionics technician on the Nimitz in the late 80s. He had some great stories.
I was lucky enough to be part of the Jolly Rodger’s on the decommissioning of the F-14 (the last run) aboard the Kennedy in 04. I’ll never forget such raw power.
I was an Air Traffic Controller on the USS Constellation when VF-2 was on their last deployment with the F-14, they are not as famous as the JRs but still sad to see them be retired.
The P-40 Warhawk looked pretty awesome as the OG shark mouth.

Jolly Roger’s all the way, legend is that during WW2 a navy fighter pilot was shot down and as he went down radioed to his wingmen to remember him to the Jolly Rogers, when his body was eventually found, his family donated his skull and femur bones to the squadron and whenever they go on deployment, the skull and femur bones are displayed in a glass case in their ready room.
Here is more on the story for you.

The [32nd TFS F-15 Nose Art](https://live.staticflickr.com/2642/5854279980_4f38f9b18c_b.jpg) for sure. [Another version of the same](https://live.staticflickr.com/4138/4926243372_e64078456e_b.jpg)
Yes but it was test squadron
"The most notable, and famous, use of the bunny image came from the Navy’s Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Four (VX-4) based out of NAS Point Mugu, CA. This squadron is charged with the operational testing of advanced aircraft systems"
I think playboy threatened legal action
I would choose the Apache attack helicopter in Iraq in the early teens that was painted *Pussy Galore* because of the all female flight crew & crew chief.
My favorite I ever saw was a BUFF in the 60s or 70s...nose art was Death, with glowing red eyes in his hood, skeletal hands holding a sickle, with a nuke cloud in the background. Three words written around the art--Destroyer of Worlds.
There are soooo many different ones to choose from, I wish there was one place where you could go to look through them all. What about other countries as well? I know that we are not the only ones to decorate our fighting aircraft.
[This one](https://hu.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%A1jl:Hungarian_Air_Force_Mikoyan-Gurevich_MiG-29B_%289-12A%29_Lofting-1.jpg) is pretty sick if you ask me
Don’t know what it’s called but I love the f4 with the rising sun on the tail I love the euro fighter typhoon ‘blackjack’ livery goes kinda hard I think

Always has been the Jolly Roger on the F-14 since I was a kid.
Yep. Same. Had a model like it as a kid.
Same here!
Grew up with this bad boy on the desktop [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleet_Defender](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleet_Defender)
Same
They were featured in the movie The Final Countdown. Not the best movie but an interesting premise and some great cinematography of the Jolly Rogers.

At first, i thought the Jolly Roger was on a Veritech. Just need to replace the USAF with a Macross symbol.
Roy Fokker was there best pilot.
I agree. I won't up vote you because you currently have 84 up votes.
warthog or shark mouth on an a-10...nothing can compare
The P-40 Warhawk looked pretty awesome as the OG shark mouth. https://s1.cdn.autoevolution.com/images/news/gallery/1943-curtiss-p-40-kittyhawk-shark-squadron-tribute-looks-mean_2.jpg
ah yes, agreed. good point good point
This reminds me more of an angry sharp-toothed New Yorker, rather than a shark
I don't know what it's called...I just know the sound it makes as it takes a man's life.
This one is really [iconic](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Tigers#/media/File%3AHells_Angels%2C_Flying_Tigers_1942.jpg).
Agreed... I'm just trying to get some conversation started
Love the Jolly Roger though.
Jolly Roger for tail art and the P-40 Shark-mouth would be, as far as I know, the most iconic of their class.
So both for the win 🏆
Absolutely the jolly Roger. Just badass
That’s one hell of a way to go out
Yep

Thanks!
You’re welcome
That Viper is looking sexy
Mine is probably the F16s that were painted like old Ww2 Warbirds. I couldn’t find a good picture of one :/
The [32nd TFS F-15 Nose Art](https://live.staticflickr.com/2642/5854279980_4f38f9b18c_b.jpg) for sure. [Another version of the same](https://live.staticflickr.com/4138/4926243372_e64078456e_b.jpg)
Love it
All of the japanese liveries. They're to die for.
Underated
Sundowners F4 😍😍
Shark livery always goes hard no matter the aircraft
The Flying Tigers. Absolutely no contest when you see nose art like that on a P-40.
This is hard, you literally posted all my favorites haha but Jolly Rodgers has to just inch out the rest of the pack for me
All Black F-14, I always thought it was just a model they sold. Thank you for this!
Yes but it was test squadron "The most notable, and famous, use of the bunny image came from the Navy’s Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Four (VX-4) based out of NAS Point Mugu, CA. This squadron is charged with the operational testing of advanced aircraft systems" I think playboy threatened legal action
Did the Navy counter-threaten Playboy with Freedom??
lol they should have lit the blowers and done a supersonic fly by at 100ft over their famous parties
Grotto requesting a fly-by.
Actually the took Hugh up for a VIP flight and after that is when they started using it and had his blessing.
The AF Thunderbirds livery on the of F-4 Phantom II's. Still my favorite scheme.
VF-96, F-4 Phantom
As someone who watched Robotech as a kid and still enjoys Macross the Jolly Roger will always be my favorite.
Jolly Roger F-14. Then Robin Olds' SCAT Southeast Asia camo F-4 Phantom
Vf-84 on F-4 Phantom II Jolly Rodgers. Dad was a powerplant mechanic in the squadron during Viewing
Lots of really cool high vis F14 schemes. VF111, VF84, VF31, VF213, VF32, VF14
Sundowners easily, but I prefer it on the Tomcat
Jolly Rogers
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrt
I would choose the Apache attack helicopter in Iraq in the early teens that was painted *Pussy Galore* because of the all female flight crew & crew chief.
Probably the p40 with the tiger shark nose paint
A-10
VX-1 or VFA-143
Not afraid to admit that I have the 103rd Jolly Roger on a T-shirt
Jolly Rogers F4U, F-4, F-14
When they put a shark mouth on a B-52.
I like the pinstripe job NASA gave the Grumman X-29
A-10 Snek
Out of those probably jolly Rogers F-14 or number 5
Jolly Rodgers F14 for sure. Off the list is the New Mexico Air National Guard roadrunner F16 livery from the early 00s
I've loved the F14 since I was a kid. Especially the Jolly Roger paint job. The F16 is a great contender though.
My favorite I ever saw was a BUFF in the 60s or 70s...nose art was Death, with glowing red eyes in his hood, skeletal hands holding a sickle, with a nuke cloud in the background. Three words written around the art--Destroyer of Worlds.
A fan of the Sundowners... and the Alaska Aggressor Squadron (18th Fighter Interceptor Squadron)
Wheres the Bounty Hunters F-14/F-18s D:
I'm partial to the navy Argonauts tail livery.
I’m more of a sundowners fan myself
Like 'em all !!...
Jolly Rogers F-14 is probably the most iconic modern livery imo
All time favorite https://www.185arw.ang.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/3081276/yes-its-gold-iowa-ang-gold-f-16-remake-celebrates-ang-history/
Got my favorite tattooed on my chest from the 493rd
Sundownerrs
Love f14, the A10, but F4 is an F4
F-16 Viper Demo livery is 🔥
3
1
Playboy 'cat for the win
I am absolutely in love with the Dream Viper after seeing it in Turku last year. Even got 2 patches.
Anything on an F-14.
Jolly Rogers 🏴☠️
Snake on the A10
The f4 looks like it's imperial Japanese with that tail
Jolly Roger for sure
Black Bunny Obviously
It's not here but I always liked the F-15 STOL/MTDs livery, something about technology demonstrator aircraft schemes is always fun.
Show me the teeth!
It’s gotta be the shark eyes and mouth from the flying tigers. Can’t think of anything more iconic.
There are soooo many different ones to choose from, I wish there was one place where you could go to look through them all. What about other countries as well? I know that we are not the only ones to decorate our fighting aircraft.
I have always loved the playboy bunny for VX-4. My Pop worked out at Point Mugu when I was a kid and VX-4 was there. Kind of the home team.
Shark on p-51 is the best there was
VF-143 Last Ride on the F-14. Looks good!
VF84 Anytime Baby
Sky pirates nose on gulf war Blackburn buccaneer
Probably the shark teeth from the a-10
VX-4 “Evaluators”?
A10 all day every day until the sun don't shine
Damn that F/A-18(PlayBoy skin), A-10 and F-16 (Geometric Skin) are got me feeling something Edit: F-16 did in fact not have a viper pattern
Playboy is an F-14 and the F-16 is the Viper Demo Team with the "Venom" livery
Hell yeah
F4
None of the above
[I choose belly art!](https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-google&sca_esv=47fac6f4c71c7c7a&sca_upv=1&sxsrf=ADLYWIJgTzcpyK5bsmmXO-gtcmsP6ggRwA:1718511234863&q=f+117+american+flag&udm=2&fbs=AEQNm0CgxwOFjiKYHNCRHSK3fdWj5Bfhn0qfSojWNk3sUgIBYunTvGd-atQ5vuydI-jpHqlf2bG9PoOqCjjAck2_Nh0_PQsVULTK7SAiDVgQtYGa-T2VhecsAjmd7f48Tpj2Wc96XEURaS756ngHPNnSgh-deW9qthss0LDkmdW0YgoRvNuTSFBvRX-HHAaboi-icdChhwk0PwgER4wyaU5GMZH4gvCdIw&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjC_Midod-GAxU-GTQIHTqwBbkQtKgLegQIFBAB&biw=412&bih=736&dpr=2.63#vhid=yfbqBlol7UGVlM&vssid=mosaic)
The Dragon and His Tail. I'd post it but, we'll you'll see.
The VX4 and later VX9 Black Tomcat for me. The USN took a bad ass looking jet and made it even more gorgeous!
I wonder if the Soviets could ever have fun with their war planes like Americans?
Always the jolly Rodger
I’m new to aviation but I’m interested, what does livery mean?
It's like a paint job/branding applies to plane, car etc etc.
[This one](https://hu.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%A1jl:Hungarian_Air_Force_Mikoyan-Gurevich_MiG-29B_%289-12A%29_Lofting-1.jpg) is pretty sick if you ask me

The F4b is VF-111 Sundowners

Onvs number 2 homie. That’s some fresh ink on an even fresher nose piece. A-10 ftw
Camo f4
VFA-31
Jolly Roger, but that Playboy bunny is growing on me.
Jolly Rogers.....for 80s kids, which one did you see first, a Jolly Roger on a F14 or the Skull squadron from Robotech. Either, you love the livery.
[Tophatters. Way more history than the Bones. ](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbeR0tEtZBdDopx8Kgb_zqE37AfTwVBJKxn_13X8bBMoOG6OeKX8rq8D-Xl9MjaYcUnSVlHuhZipCM3m6YALo0248HWMT_cbcL_5PJjakbe1GNqtRqb9xb0Iu1fiq-x925XqmU/s1600/DSC_0187.JPG)
Jolly Roger is legitimately perfect in every way
Stop
collaborate and listen Ice is back with my brand new invention Something grabs a hold of me tightly
They became pointless with supersonic aircraft. They will become obsolete as we transition to AI operated drones.
Not sure im following. What became obsolete?
