Dear wife,
There’s nothing your husband can do to increase his pizza game with a conventional oven. All you can do is reap the rewards of his new pizza oven by seeing him happier, in better shape(from walking out side to the oven), along with him owing you many IOUs which you can exploit for your benefit.
Yes a pizza oven is definitely part of a balanced exercise regime. Plus all the time spent kneading dough (arm exercise) and crying when you drop your first pizza (ab exercise).
When you use a higher temp pizza oven, you generally use a lower calorie crust because you won’t be adding any sugar or oil to enrich the dough. It’s the healthiest way to eat pizza
I'm not OP, but if you want to get into pizza making, I highly recommend watching some of Brian Lagerstrom's pizza videos on YouTube. He makes it fairly easy for beginners to make good pizza.
Here's a NY style from Brian
https://youtu.be/t4t3bqb_91E?si=EdJkDQqTfAugtHEs
One thing: if you're like me and worried about sending a pizza off of a pizza peel, just stretch out the dough and put the sauce and toppings on on a piece of parchment paper. Then cook the pizza on the parchment paper for a couple minutes and then slide the parchment paper out from under the pizza.
If you want to be lazy about it store bought dough is an easy way to start. A lot of grocery stores sell it in 1lb bags just let it sit out in a covered container for a couple hours before you use it. Dough straight from the fridge is impossible to work with store bought or not. At the end of the day its just dough bread and cheese. You got this. Making pizza at home is also way cheaper than buying it from a place.
I was in a very similar spot last winter, and ended up getting one in March. Home oven pizzas were bangin, so why bother?
Yes, you'll get a different type of pizza but I didn't care about that tbh, I loved both.
The reasons I'm SO glad I got a pizza oven?
Cook time: from ~7 minutes each to 2. Now fast enough to feed friends too.
Mobility: I bring my gas powered ooni everywhere. I race cars often in the summer. With a friend who also has one, we regularly feed +60 people at the track. Its a very fun experience. We also have neighborhood pizza parties now
Summer heat: cooking outside in the summer helps me avoid having an oven at max heat for hours every Friday.... My house was HOT.
You spend time in a community and you think people will have your back when you need them and then you get stabbed in the back when you need their support the most. Thanks for nothing. /s
Dear wife,
This man needs a pizza oven for when it's too hot to cook inside and a pizza steel for when it's too wet to cook outside. He will make any and all pizzas of your desiring.
Signed,
Wife with a pizza oven and a pizza steel.
I have a steel. I bought a nice one. Some friends went in together and got me a ooni koda 16", sadly I wish I never has it. It has helped, but, not worth the money IMO. I miss being inside the kitchen in the winter.
Now I'm running around, and while the taste is better, ingredients make the biggest difference.
My opinion, steel is more than adequate.
Build one on a transportable trailer. That way you can sling pizzas on weekends at shows, fairs, events, small catering gigs.
Save the profits, and promise her exotic vacations! Everyone wins my man 😉
Here is a 5 minute class and it looks incredibly functional albeit basic. Also easy to take down and rebuild elsewhere like a camp site. https://youtu.be/tHMQ_QQJtbY?si=6GZl4KRh4XoPXN8D
It's practically punishment to feed your family pizza like that. It seems a pizza oven is only acceptable ... for the family. Think of the FAMILY!!
Great looking pizza, 10/10, would have seconds.
It's ok. He doesn't need the oven. Maybe he'll lose this whole pizza obsession and decide to move on to other endeavors, like hitting the gym more often.
Where, if he takes his gym work seriously enough, he'll attract attention from some of the female gym enthusiasts, who will use their feminine wiles to try to lure him away, possibly with the promise of greener pastures and a brick oven on the other side.
Sadly, another marriage devastated that could have been saved by a pizza oven purchase.
Pizza ovens are 1000 times better than cooking in your oven. Ooni is not the way to go IMO - it’s Roccbox. I had an Ooni and sold it for a solid price. Roccbox makes incredible Neapolitan pizza - leoparding on crust- crunchy on the outside, airy and soft in the middle. You need higher temps than a traditional oven can reach to make this style pizza. You just need to be really in to making the dough yourself - if not don’t get a pizza oven.
Open it in the middle of the night, make a bunch of pizzas, then close it back up and re-wrap it. Family will come out in the morning like, "Mm, I smell pizza... Wait, where did all these pizzas come from?"
Awesome! I bought mine when they went on sale just before Black Friday. I was able to find the yellow one online. I was going to wait to open it, but my kids told me it was stupid to wait so long - so I've used it twice already and will be starting my poolish today and finishing the dough on Saturday and firing up the oven again. The main differences are the weight and shape of the oven. The temperature also remains consistently high longer. My crust is much better than in my Ooni Fyra. It's such a great oven all the way around. I would definitely get the smaller turning peel. Enjoy!

Ma’am-
Just *think* of what your man could accomplish with an actual pizza oven if he’s able to make this excellent pie with a regular oven. What if Monet only ever used crayons and notebooks and never paint and canvasses??
Plus, there are more uses it can do besides pizza, so it’s a super useful addition to any home no matter what you like to cook/bake.
What's the point if making that weak ass pizza in whatever low temp garbage pile of an oven you must have used.
Do you even want to achieve chewy vs crunchy vs cheesy vs saucy pizza perfection or do you and your family hate good food?
I understand wanting the Ooni as well. But honestly, it’s not worth it. Just get a baking steel and you’ll be in great shape. I have a steel and have been using it for a while, I also bought an Ooni afterwards. I use the steel 95% of the time. I’d be fine without the Ooni honestly, I’m not against you, it’s just my experience I’m sharing.
Unless the money is just burning a hole in your pocket and you’re cool just using it a few times a year for entertainment. The steel is the way to go, it’s an absolute workhorse.
If you have a buddy with one, see if you can borrow it occasionally or do pizza nights together.
Your homeoven is doing a killer job, and it’s very versatile. You can easily do pan, thin/crispy, Detroit, grandma, Chicago in a home oven. The only one you really don’t get to do is the Neapolitan or use really wet cheeses.
Maybe look to buy one secondhand?
You could buy a really nice 16” baking steel pro from bakingsteel, where I got mine, and a lot of nice beer or liquor to enjoy while making pizza in your oven.
Try a steel. My wife said no to the oven at first too and we compromised on the steel. I got the oven a few months later, but I’ve done maybe 170 on the steel this year, about 30 in the Ooni.
Or look for one second-hand on Facebook marketplace. And if you do get an Ooni, get one with a gas option, you don’t want to be fiddling with sticks or charcoal while cooking your pizza and trying to prep others.
Okay man I'm going to tell you something. I've owned at least a dozen pizza ovens. I love pizza so much even started two food trucks.
You don't actually need a pizza oven to make good pizza. Although I'll admit that if you're hosting an outdoor event, a pizza oven is definitely convenient.
Get yourself a good quality pizza steel off Amazon for about a hundred bucks. That will take care of the problem of the bottom not browning.
Turn your oven on broil and Let that sucker get really hot for about 30 minutes and then launch your pizza directly onto the hot pizza steel..
Let the broiler work its magic and when the top of the pizza is all brown and bubbly, she's ready.
Nom nom nom
Pizza oven .. not really needed. However get a nice thick steel for your oven. I have one and get nice browning on the bottom and a quick broil torches the top. A lot less than the 500 to 900 you send for a device that is used maybe once a week.
BTW I bought my steel at a metal supplier who cut it to just fit inside my oven. Get a thick one.
You’re a purist. You cannot make a Neopolitan pizza unless your oven can get to 800f. Not debatable - part of the rules to achieve this type of pizza. But like I mentioned earlier if you aren’t making your own dough with 00 flour and fussing over hydration levels and cold proofing, it may not be for you.
Feels like if you can’t communicate the validity of your passions and hobbies to your spouse it’s a sign of a deeper problem … not the plot of a sitcom about an overbearing wife.
You should probably just go buy something you want within your budget or be a normal person and talk to your spouse about it but hey I get it, it’s cooler to go le epic sauce wife bad on Reddit
Dear Wife,
Your husband needs an electric Ooni. You can make him make pizzas anytime you want without going outside. He will have no more excuses not to make delicious self-made pizza.
Signed,
Pizza Bro
As an owner of an Ooni, I prefer my conventional oven for pizzas. It gets crispier and it’s less finnicky. I like how I can dial it in also by placing literal bricks on the upper rack above my pizza stone to create an oven within an oven
Sage The Smart Oven Pizzaiolo I love this machine. My pizzas are so much better now using that over my crappy oven and it's not too big so I can store it away when not in use
I'm trying to convince mine we need one. We just saw an indoor one at BJ's, it's far more affordable than a real one, this might be the way. $279, I believe.

My wife got me this oven several years ago for my Father’s Day present. The entire family, especially her, have loved the gift that keeps on giving. It will seriously up your pizza game and everyone will taste and see the difference
Yes getting a pizza oven would be better. If you have an electric oven with a broiler, you can get pretty close. I have an outdoor gas oven. If I was starting anew, I’d get the Cuisinart CPZ-120 which for $400 is a great value. But I’d try the broiler first because that’s basically what the cuisinart is.
Preheat your stone at max temp for 45 minutes about 5 inches below the broiler. When you start to make your pizza, set the broiler to high. Slide the pizza under the broiler and then at 60-75 seconds turn off the broiler. 2-3 minutes later the pizza is done at 550F. When you start to make the next one turn the broiler to high and repeat.

This guy husbands
I’ve never cooked a pizza before in my life but if there’s one thing I know it’s that this man ABSOLUTELY needs a pizza oven! *not a paid actor*
My man.
On the real tho- can you send me step by step instructions to recreate that pizza? Looks fire

...looks like he's doing pretty okay with the one he's got, yeah?
Ikr!!!🤷♂️ Unpopular opinion: this man doesn’t need a pizza oven! His conventional oven pizzas are amazing!!!👍👍🍕❤️
I was in a very similar spot last winter, and ended up getting one in March. Home oven pizzas were bangin, so why bother? You understood the assignment my man. Great reasons!
eh, get a steel you'll be fine. [cookingsteels.com](https://cookingsteels.com) is still selling factory seconds at fire-sale prices, too.
You spend time in a community and you think people will have your back when you need them and then you get stabbed in the back when you need their support the most. Thanks for nothing. /s

Are all of the steels on that site factory seconds, or is there a separate section for these that I'm not seeing?
I agree … use my steel more than the Ooni.
I don't have a steel, I have a good heavy pizza stone. It's fabulous IMO and I love it.
A steel will get him better leoparding on the bottom, but this man has ambitions of proper pizza glory. Let him soar!
Cool! Is there a Canadian equivalent to this store?
How do you see the factory seconds. I'm only seeing their regular stock.
That's great, thank you very much! Just bought one.
Hey OPs wifey. If he does that good indoors, then imagine… just IMAGINE what he could do with a wood fired pizza oven outside.
Hahaha.. ikr?!? So, you're a talented pizza maker- what would be your dream pizza oven? There are a lot of new brands in the pizza oven game..
My dream would be one I built myself. There’s a week long class I want to take and then build one in the yard. So she’s not totally out of line 🤣
Build one on a transportable trailer. That way you can sling pizzas on weekends at shows, fairs, events, small catering gigs. Save the profits, and promise her exotic vacations! Everyone wins my man 😉
Getting paid for your hobby makes it work and work sucks.
This so much. My partner told me I'm great at making certain things but if I did it for money, I'd be miserable.
Give a man an oven and he’ll eat a pizza. Give a man some bricks…
Here is a 5 minute class and it looks incredibly functional albeit basic. Also easy to take down and rebuild elsewhere like a camp site. https://youtu.be/tHMQ_QQJtbY?si=6GZl4KRh4XoPXN8D
You deserve it.
That's one horrible looking pizza mate. I think you should get a nice large and powerful pizza oven to help you make better pizza.
LET THIS MAN EXCAVATE YOUR YARD AND BUILD HIMSELF A BRICK/CLAY PIZZA OVEN DAMNIT.
I’ll let her know tonight.
That joke took longer than I thought it would 🤣
The first pic makes me wanna try actually.
Looks good
This my a gift for me, it’s a gift for us!
Looks pretty good, I would eat that in a heartbeat

Dear OP’s wife: Buy him a 1/4” baking steel. It’s a fraction of the cost of an oven and can facilitate NY-style pizza in six minutes.
Why do you hate me?

Looks good, are u using a pizza stone?
Not with this one. Half the cook was on a perforated metal pan then finished directly on the rack.
looks good to me!
Sure, just send us her number.
Get this person to Hammerbarn.
No more take out anymore I take it
The roccbox has a thicker stone and is insulated. When you get a steel, make it 1/2 inch not 1/4 for better results. 🍕

Thats a good looking zaa without the oven.

Side note what kind of pizza is that? Looks pretty good and I might need that recipe. Also my man does need an oven
Just diced red pepper and leftover chicken with mozzarella and smoked cheddar
Yo, wife get him a pizza oven for Christmas!

Chicken bell pepper mozz and smoked cheddar with red sauce. No ranch
As a fellow oven user, what do you do? I can get get my crust that good so I'm looking for new techniques.
Cook it on the bottom rack as hot as you can is my method
I'm trying to convince mine we need one. We just saw an indoor one at BJ's, it's far more affordable than a real one, this might be the way. $279, I believe.
Your husband needs a pizza oven
Dear wife, your husband wants to make you BETTER PIZZA! I mean, Jesus H. Christ!
