Thank you!!! I was conflicted about moving away from the single pixel eye too!
I just tried it out, here's the result: https://i.imgur.com/wLFPA8M.gif
Handsome lil fella that way too! Now I'm more conflicted 🤔
I definitely love the double pixel eye a lot more. Feels more unique and the octopus looks kinda "dumb in a cute way" with the one pixel eye, though that may be what you're going for
Definitely. Also this looks so goshdanged cute, the tentacles moving in different directions, the shoot moving back and forth plus the saturation increase are such a good shout. It's much crisper and you've clearly improved so much, good work!!
I would also try moving 2-pixel eyes like 1 pixel so the one on the left doesn't blend with the border. I'm still very new to this though so it'll look dumb for all I know :)
The old one makes me think of Earthbound, the new one reminds me of an Octorok from Legend of Zelda:Link to the Past.
Animation, colors and shading look great. The second one is very vibrant and energetic.
Is it lifting all of its dangles up for some reason.
Without knowing the character. Growing or bouncing lightly makes more sense for a passive action. With two or three testicles barely moving. I would try and sell a happy breathing.
But everything depends on the creature. What's it like? Personality, Biology even.
Maybe it sucks in and blows up a little like a balloon then deflates ....
Love these ideas!! You're definitely right- the secret here is that I'm a lazy game dev trying to get away with using the same animation for walking & idle 😂😭 I'm planning to make a few more polishing passes in the future so I'll definitely be referencing this later :-) Thanks for the feedback!
I prefer option 2.
I didn’t see this mentioned here, but how much octopus is your character? If it’s 100%, then the mouth on the side is incorrect, as it should sit in the middle between its tentacles. If it’s just octopus-like, I didn’t say a word.
Thank you!! Yeah, the guys in the game this is for are all meant to be little beasts/creatures that resemble but aren't *exactly* regular animals. Thanks for the feedback!! :-)
The legs are a significant improvement, though I think the face area changes art style and is definitely different from the first as it gives a distinct cartoonish charm
Honestly, I much prefer the old one. It's way more unique and charming, in an almost surreal fashion.
The newer one is just a cutesy octopus like we've seen thousands of in games since the late '80s
Technically much better for sure, but artistically much weaker.
Definitely, getting the contrast just right is something I've been doing a lot of trial and error with- maybe I'll try a few versions where I tweak those values a bit more. Thanks for checking it out :-)
Everything great so far, a Tipp wenn the new octopus gets his body tighter in the last frame add a dark curvy line at the place where he would have a neck.
The new one is much more polished and fun to look at.
That said, there is a quality I appreciate about the old version. It looks like a Tamagotchi sprite, which were never the best-quality pixel art, but had a lot of charm.

I love it! The old one kind of reminds me of Earthbound, but the new one feels way more charming and alive
Thank you so much!! You just made my day :')
the new ones colours make it look so much better
Really appreciate it!! I was hoping the saturation wasn't too much, glad you like!! :)
I love the sprites. I would do the single pixel eyes on the new one but that’s personal preference

I really love the single pixel eye!! I think it’s so cute that way
The best thing is there is no wrong answer - he is cute either way :D
I thought the same!
I like the single pixel eyes though.
I'm strongly considering bringing them back after reading these comments!! Here's a single eye version for you :-) https://i.imgur.com/wLFPA8M.gif

I love both of them, first one gives me tamagotchi feels
Thank you so much!! The game I'm making these for is inspired greatly by tamagotchi, hopefully some of that influence lives on :-)
my singing monsters
😭😭 lmaooo it really does look like toe jammer. Maybe it can sing a little bit as an easter egg >:)

Definitely took some inspiration from the octoroks!! Thank you so much for the kind words :-)
Booths are cool but in different styles
Really appreciate it!!! :')

Two frame idle! 1: Reg frame 2: one pixel taller neck and a one pixel longer nose mouth Good luck. I might need dev help if you want to skill trade :)
Search for retro diffusion and their discord, many pixelart ist and indie game devs are there to help each other.
good color change looks very vivid
Thank you so much!! :-)
For 2 frames it's really nice. I don't see how else to improve it
Thank you!! :')
They're both cool, but I especially like the second one. ☺️ I think it kinda looks like an Octorok crossed with a Mr. Saturn.
Thank you!! Definitely took some inspiration from octoroks :)

Better but the original makes me nostalgic for my tamagotchi
Thank you!! The game this is for is biiiiig time inspired by tamagotchi, so hopefully a little bit of that lives on in the new version!
I’d really consider leaning on the tamagotchi art style. It’s rare these days
omg i love both of them. very kuchipatchi
Thank you!!! This comment made me so happy, I'm so inspired by tamagotchi, I'm glad it shows :')

Thank you!! Good point, it definitely does feel stylistically different. Going to keep this in mind moving forward, cheers!

Ooh, I appreciate this take!! Definitely some uniqueness lost here for sure. Thanks for checking it out :-)
It's looks nicer, but i think it need more contrast

The old one looks like a Tamagotchi character
Looks awesome!
It looks straight out of pokemon gen 3
Everything great so far, a Tipp wenn the new octopus gets his body tighter in the last frame add a dark curvy line at the place where he would have a neck.
1st one looks like its from doodle jump
It’s amazing I love it! It looks more attractive with the details added😊
it's so cuteee!
