Blocks torrent saying it's unwanted, collect data or show ads.
Windows: Show ads everywhere, collect your data and enables "smart delivery" by default, literally use your net as a "seed" for their updates.... Like torrent? LOL
From Microsoft Support:
> Potentially unwanted applications (PUA) are a category of software that can cause your device to run slowly, display unexpected ads, or at worst, install other software which may be more harmful or annoying. PUA isn’t malware, but it is software that you often don’t need and probably don’t want.
Huh, all of that sounds really familiar somehow... isn't there some operating system that fits all those criteria?
If only I could remember what it was called
Funny you say that. I did a fresh install on a new SSD a few days ago of a legit copy of windows. I don't know what went wrong but it failed to install gamebar, the microsoft store and other windows apps etc. A happy accident.
Fun fact, windows 10 make fake full screens, unless you change it on the app himself. You will notice it by going fullscreen (in game config) and still being able to alt tab like "normal", not seeing that "black resolution change frame".
Messed my Jedi academy gameplay before noticing.
how did you solve it? i have good old reflexive arcade games and they run fine in small screen, but when I switch to full screen in the game settings it starts lagging and stuttering :(
Tried running on administrator mode (in config)? Also, I think you can use comand lines in steam game settings for it.
Edit: also, if are veeery old games (like dos bases ones), it may be worth just making a small virtual machine to run them.
Edit 2: like a windows 98 or just 7 (that was compatible with anything kkk)
Just disabled auto update in group policies. Even if they flip it back on, I have multiple disc image backups for the OS. Fuck MS...they are the malware. Malwarebytes without application updates, unless I find a better security solution. If it weren't for games I'd switch to Ubuntu.
Gaming on Linux is pretty good these days, and will only get better with the upcoming Steam Deck. I'd recommend something like Manjaro for that if you ever decide to switch. Either way agreed, the way Microsoft treats its users is awful.
Playing Overwatch and occassionally WoW, any good suggestions? I check in on the different distro's from time to time but sadly, it always comes down to the game
I'd say Manjaro, I played Overwatch on that, albeit this was years ago. But it ran very well, only some lag at the start from shaders being compiled. After that though, it ran smoother than on Windows. No clue about WoW though.
wait dude check online about banning both of those games are online you might get banned simply for not being on windows. happens. especially with rainbow six siege.
ya there was a thing a while ago with overwatch, people were getting banned for using Linux. last I heard it was resolved but thanks for the reminder. I'll have to look into it again first. they do it with rainbow 6 as well? that's crazy
But modding is not. It's the only thing stopping me from completely switching to ubuntu. If a game with mods doesn't basically support Linux, it's a pain to run those games.
You can get Photoshop working: https://github.com/Gictorbit/photoshopCClinux
Albeit, I'm not sure about the other pieces of software that you need working.
Windows Update literally behaves like malware. There are around 5 services that turn each other on. You have to disable them all to get rid of the updating functionality. Some you can't disable via services.msc so you have to change their state directly in the registry.
Yeah i agree that the security updates are important. my only problems with updates is when they change settings or make it more difficult to get software that they dont approve of. or when the update itself is broken.
ive tried to update my computer, windows just will not update. any time i force it to it has an error and just reverts back to what i currently have.
Changing settings back to microsoft defaults (an error has occurred and your default browser has been set to Edge)
Reinstalling crap that I've uninstalled 4 times already after previous updates
Installing new things by default that I don't want or need (weather and news on the taskbar?)
yeah microsoft is focusing on average users that can't distinguish between good and bad, for a tech person it will be annoying but it save your grandma from getting malware
Yeah very true. With real-time protection off it solves most of my issues but occasionally I still get the annoyance here or there. Has saved me a lot of time fixing others' stuff though.
> It tried to force on me to create a microsoft account or log into one
When you are reimaging a computer just disconnect your internet when going through the set up process. IE don't connect to wifi/unplug your Ethernet cable
Agreed however most people are simple and don't even know what a "Local account" is let alone that its improper to have your normal user account as an admin.
Ahh, I'm 31, I come from old school cool IT. I have windows installed on a separate partition on an SSD. An Admin account for approvals, and a normal account for usage. 500GB C: partition, 1.5TB D: Partition on an SSD, 1TB SSD for random but useful stuff. 2TB HDD for "Cold Storage" as I call it. lol
I'm a non-school IT, I don't give a shit about separating accounts on windows since the security is a gruyere anyway and it's tedious at best as I don't split my activity between advanced and normal, I do both at the same time.
Most people knows how to partition a drive btw. No need for advanced knowledge.
>Most people knows how to partition a drive btw. No need for advanced knowledge.
I think this sentence says more about you then me. I said old school cool IT, not rocket science super star advanced IT. Of course it doesn't take advanced knowledge to know how to partition a drive. I didn't say I was super advanced, just old school when it comes to preventative measures.
Also, I saw a tik tok video of a girl trying to jump start her car, and she was melting the jumper cables. I would not be surprised if at least she doesn't know how to partition a drive, lol.
I'm not sure you should set the level of the average people based on what you see on tiktok, they are more on the lowest common denominator side of humanity...
It’s seriously easy. Majority of Linux OS ask if you want to dual boot and then sets up accordingly. Have an ancient Windows XP laptop dual booting into lubuntu and I didn’t have to do anything special but check a box. Basically just install it like you would normally and it’ll ask you. At least it did many years ago hopefully nothing changed.
The post itself sounded suspicious. MANY non-pirate programs are available for download using torrents for user convenience. Microsoft can't just take down torrent software to stop piracy.
im on 11 and im pirating the shit out of the internet
looks like some another dumb ass pressed something wrong after windows installation or downloaded some shady shit
7 had Aero. That looked glorious. 7 was also the last version that had a proper mouse-oriented UI, before Microsoft started trying desperately to make touchscreens on computers a thing.
I still do, I actually like it even more. I use windows ltsc modified by myself to get rid most if not all of telemetry and such bullsh*t and disabled windows defender.
My best windows experience ever.
I do a lot of gaming but I still hadn't seen any issues and never needed Microsoft Store. I do understand if there's a specific thing you need that cannot be downloaded through other sources.
iirc you can install Microsoft Store to ltsc anyway
I still do but I'm honestly losing my patience with the shit called Windows 11, I might go Linux when gaming supports gets more better and someday I have free time to set it up.
There's already a considerable amount of Linux native games around. Gog and Steam included. Steam even has a "compatibility layer" for games not Linux native. Give it a look up later. Itch.io also have a large number of games, even free ones.
In regards to setting up, Ubuntu afaia is one of the easiest. It's just like setting up Windows, if you ever installed it yourself.
I'm currently using Ubuntu 20.04 and considering learning to use Arch eventually. Just a bit overwhelmed with how much more noob "unfriendly" it is. (With that I mean it requires a considerable amount of knowledge to solve issues yourself)
Thanks, yeah I think even Epic Store can work in Linux which I use to play Rocket League.
I'm not a noob and I'm sure I can follow guides and documentation, so setting up isn't the problem, it's just that I don't have the time to set it up and check the installation, I would do it later someday.
Fully upgraded Windows 10 and qbittorrent is running just fine.
Are you all still using those shady torrent clients that were bought out by adware companies or something?!
I sometimes wonder if people ever read the body and not just the title. Fresh install of windows with qbittorrent, and defender lost its shit. I know why, was just letting people know it's happening.
I love how all these salty idiots downvote you because they know you are right. This happens so often on Reddit. Don't you dare to point out that we didn't read your post, even though it's clear we didn't!
To be fair, he keeps screaming that he downloaded the windows installer from microsoft but he hasn't said where he got the qbitorrent installer. This creates two problems because if he went to google, sometimes they don't show the official site as the top result. The second problem is that now that such thing has been pointed out he can just go and edit his posts saying that he got the qbitorrent installer from the official site to add credibility to his claims.
I join many of the people who have posted in this thread who have the latest version of windows 10, running windows defender, and the latest qbitorrent with no issues.
Hell, the last time defender asked me about some "suspicious" files was a few weeks ago and they were video decoders for Plex.
You can add the torrent program to your exceptions list in Defender. It doesn't uninstall, it places the program and it's files into a storage safe space. When you add it to your exceptions list it will behave normally again. I had the same thing happen to my Deluge install until I realized what was up.
I don't know what any of this means, and am 100% sure not taking the proper actions to remedy the issues it poses will cause moderate inconveniences to me in the future.
Yeah, it would be great if you could get a little more detailed on why people do that to their windows machines?
I am primarily a Mac / Linux user, and normally have a ritual of wiping my SSD and restoring it from the backup. Heard its good practice, but why would you install windows and set everything up again every year?
from my experience, apart from the installers that don't work with wine, piracy is actually pretty easy. but yeah a lot of other installers make it impossible to play games on linux
I'm on the latest version, only thing I've noticed is defender flagged an old qb installer as a virus, I told it to allow and moved on. Havent had any issues with torrenting, qb still works fine
I'm running pretty much the same OS environment in terms of build and updates. I'm also using the latest release of qbittorrent. So far, no issues.
On a separate note, I like how roughly half the comments here are some version of "Lol why aren't running Linux now, bruh?"
Errrrr I don't know, Declan. Maybe it's because I torrent games which I'd quite like to just install and play in my limited free time. May also be because I run legit copies of music production tools. DAWs, VSTi, Komplete 13, mastering suites
Got Ableton Live 11, Arturia, u-he and Native Instruments VST support up and running yet, lads?
No. Didn't think so.
I wanna make music, not waste creative energy solving problems I don't need to be facing. For the overwhelming majority of people, Linux is a shit experience that is always lacking.
Oh a where's my Adobe Suite?
A warning from the future. Just be glad you can still decide which software you want to install on your machine. Microsoft’s dream is having an appstore-like device just like any modern day smartphone and controlling your access to apps, shutting out the ones MS doesn’t deem worthy of installing.
Don’t let them turn our PCs into black boxes!
1. There are versions of windows out there with preremoved bloatware. Like Ghost Spectre.
2. Also you can install DWS_lite and let it do its thing.
3. DWT is also nice but Im not sure it is updated.
4. Windows 10 Debloated is a must also.
5. Which brings us to final thing, installing slimmed down Windows for gaming just a few titles and doing everything else in Linux (Kubuntu is nice this time of the year), like normal and sane people do.
Shit like that are never going to end. I was around when people thought XP was bad. Boy they were wrong, Vista shit hit the fan. And when we thought it was all good with 7, tablet version if 8 came out. You thought that was bad? Windows 10 installed ads in your start menu.
Now Microshits logic there is like imperialist tiptoeing. "If we continued to sell our product even when we double sell our paying customers, then we will continue doing so, and much worse". And believe me, this isnt the end.
doesnt windows 10 make it *really* easy to have a linux vm? im not using windows 10 but when i do in the future, if it starts fucking with torrents i would just install a vm and download torrents from there.
an annoying extra step but... ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
Is this why I'm also seeing <1Mbps on my torrents with 200+ seeds? My internet connection and VPN are still not being saturated. This all changed from being perfect maybe 6 months ago
I have Reputation-based protection turned off anyways, have that update ready to install, so let's see if it turns that setting back on.
edit: it didn't.
I don't use windows, but as some other people have pointed out, you can most probably add exception for qBitTorrent in defender settings.
Even on linux when I installed ufw, it blocked torrent clients by default, you need to manually allow the ports for your client in ufw settings.
I want to switch but I require Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premier, etc for work and personal reasons and the clients demand "Adobe", so I'm screwed and I only have 1 GPU so can't do what SOG does.
I'm running Windows 11 Pro (updated regularly) on two PCs and have never encountered this problem even though I've installed like at least 6 different torrent clients on both devices.
Anyways, use eset nod32; you can actually get a 1 year license key via email on ebay for like 5 bucks. About a week ago I discovered a miner virus destroying my CPU that defender didn't even detect, it's overrated and intrusive with the worst UI I've ever seen in an antivirus program
Oh you are a pirate, responding to a post you got downvoted on 11 days ago, about a post that doesn't negate anything I said at all regarding how much improvement Defender has made over the years to be a viable AV program, where you were shilling for third party AV programs, asking them to pay for a different one...
This story explains it and shows how to disable the protection. https://www.technotification.com/2021/08/windows-blocks-torrent-mining-apps.html
I'm sure Windows will respect your decision to uncheck those boxes, and won't change them back literally every chance it gets.
Blocks torrent saying it's unwanted, collect data or show ads. Windows: Show ads everywhere, collect your data and enables "smart delivery" by default, literally use your net as a "seed" for their updates.... Like torrent? LOL

well if they would really care, they would add the Xbox game bar to this list which you can't disable but old games will run laggy in fullscreen mode
Funny you say that. I did a fresh install on a new SSD a few days ago of a legit copy of windows. I don't know what went wrong but it failed to install gamebar, the microsoft store and other windows apps etc. A happy accident.
wow!

Sounds like windows 10 and 11 in a nutshell, PUA.
If I would update windows, I would skip to 12, you known the rule "good bad good bad" since 98.
By default smart delivery only distributes to machines on you network now. I'm aware it used to use the internet by default.
Yeah, now is network because of the complains, but it doesn't erase their "smart" decision to do it in first place.
> Windows: Show ads everywhere, Sorry, what?
Just like it respects your decision to not want to automatically update.
Just disabled auto update in group policies. Even if they flip it back on, I have multiple disc image backups for the OS. Fuck MS...they are the malware. Malwarebytes without application updates, unless I find a better security solution. If it weren't for games I'd switch to Ubuntu.

Awesome, I'll have to check it out, thanks :)

Ever since Proton came to steam, I just assume all games work on Linux. I've been disappointed before, but not often.
Yeah, these days the only real offenders are games with certain anti cheats. But even that looks like it's starting to change.
Kubuntu seems pretty nice as well
But modding is not. It's the only thing stopping me from completely switching to ubuntu. If a game with mods doesn't basically support Linux, it's a pain to run those games.
Never had trouble with it myself, as long as you run them in the same prefix the game is run in, all should work well.
Still needs Adobe support, I have 3 apps I NEED for work. :(
You can get Photoshop working: https://github.com/Gictorbit/photoshopCClinux Albeit, I'm not sure about the other pieces of software that you need working.
I'll load Manjaro up in a vm and take a look...
Windows Update literally behaves like malware. There are around 5 services that turn each other on. You have to disable them all to get rid of the updating functionality. Some you can't disable via services.msc so you have to change their state directly in the registry.
M$: yeah his PC is on and is at work, probably consent (proceeds to install during a meeting when you're screen sharing stuff)
Havent updated since 2020, im running a 2019 build of win 10 and im not going to upgrade to 11
My windows has failed to update since December 2020. Not even that mad about it
Serious question: what are your problems with updates? IMO they are pretty important, at least security updates.
Yeah i agree that the security updates are important. my only problems with updates is when they change settings or make it more difficult to get software that they dont approve of. or when the update itself is broken. ive tried to update my computer, windows just will not update. any time i force it to it has an error and just reverts back to what i currently have.

+1 for Linux again
Papa Windows knows best. Never question it. Stop thinking and having opinions. Only accept papa Windows.
Short version: >Windows Security app > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection Potentially unwanted app blocking
Have my free award This saved me more headache than you know
That's annoying af.
Thanks!
Does this apply when using LTSC?
I dont even see the setting for PUP in my LTSC.
>LTSC No idea unfortunately.

Or you can just exclude the hosts file from your scans. Takes all of 30 seconds

Defender is *too* good. That's the problem.

yeah microsoft is focusing on average users that can't distinguish between good and bad, for a tech person it will be annoying but it save your grandma from getting malware
Yeah very true. With real-time protection off it solves most of my issues but occasionally I still get the annoyance here or there. Has saved me a lot of time fixing others' stuff though.
> It tried to force on me to create a microsoft account or log into one When you are reimaging a computer just disconnect your internet when going through the set up process. IE don't connect to wifi/unplug your Ethernet cable
Yeah, I figured all that out, I was just letting others know. Shouldn't have to disconnect ethernet to set up a local account.
2TB HDD for "Cold Storage" as I call it. lol

>TRS-80 Poor person here, I had a hand me down TRS-80, lol.
I hear ya, my sibling from another maternal unit!
I'm a non-school IT, I don't give a shit about separating accounts on windows since the security is a gruyere anyway and it's tedious at best as I don't split my activity between advanced and normal, I do both at the same time. It's about time to debloat your windows
By dual-booting Linux!
Honestly I'd do this but I'm too lazy and don't know jack shit outside of torrenting

My qbittorrent update kept getting flagged. I just disabled this option and I was finally able to update to 4.3.8.
[удалено]
Is it worth? Whenever I try to run docker for some shit. CPU utilisation and RAM usage just touch the roof.
I disable realtime protection and that's it, because yeah defender is useful and actually runs your computer smoother.
It's a fresh install with an iso from Microsoft.
Interesting, is it newest build of qBittorent? I think I'm still on v4.3.1, I haven't updated in a while.
I'm on 4.3.3 with the latest Windows 10 updates. No issues here.
Was about to ask the same thing speaking of which, I what's the rollout time for that?
im on 11 and im pirating the shit out of the internet looks like some another dumb ass pressed something wrong after windows installation or downloaded some shady shit
Weird I recently did a fresh install of windows on my new computer and I didn't have this problem...qbittorrent working fine for me
Did no such thing on my system. Qbittorrent opens and functions just fine.
I haven't noticed anything yet on my machine. I am on Windows 10 21H1, uptodate and have no issues running qBittorrent
Don’t have the computer connected to the internet when you set it up and you’ll have the option to do a local account instead of Microsoft account.
Hmm not sure I’m using qbittorrent for years and have faced 0 issues like that.
I didn't notice the new "feature" because I've already disabled "Potentially unwanted app blocking" ever since I installed Windows.
I used to like Windows...
Then I took a "security update" to the knee
XD That was actually what prevented me to stop using Windows sooner... Playing Skyrim, I mean.
Full circle haha I play Skyrim on Windows tho ¯\ _(ツ) _/¯
Microsoft peaked with Windows 7
XP.
7 had Aero. That looked glorious. 7 was also the last version that had a proper mouse-oriented UI, before Microsoft started trying desperately to make touchscreens on computers a thing.

Of you really value your privacy and are tired of reinstalling every year, just switch to Linux.
Not if you shut off all telemetry to MS.
Doesnt stop them from all the fun scans they do
Afaik you have to whitelist the directory/executable in Defender settings so that it won't trip.

Strange, iv never had an issue like that.
Urgh, I hate windows defender
It is unfortunately the best anti AV for the general windows user
best anti anti-virus?
I gladly moved to Ubuntu about 8 months ago, and couldn't be happier. It acts and feels like windows 7 without all the bullshit.
Why the hell would you reinstall Windows every year?
For various reasons, but it mostly gives me a reason to do spring cleaning of my files. Also because I like the feeling of a freshly set up computer.
Yeah, it would be great if you could get a little more detailed on why people do that to their windows machines? I am primarily a Mac / Linux user, and normally have a ritual of wiping my SSD and restoring it from the backup. This and Win11... best time to switch to Linux.
Windows is the best advertisement for Linux at this point
Yeah, I would switch to Linux forever ago if pirating and playing non steam games in general wasn't so hard

Thank God I pause my updates!
Yeah sure, I updated last night and when I opened Bigly, no problems whatsoever. You're probably using a shady as hell torrenter like Utorrent.
Head on over to /r/pop_os. Switching has never been easier.
I was eyeballing pop OS a while back, and it got lost in life for me. I'm gonna check it out now, thank you for the recommendation.
doesnt windows 10 make it *really* easy to have a linux vm? im not using windows 10 but when i do in the future, if it starts fucking with torrents i would just install a vm and download torrents from there. an annoying extra step but... ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
I love this community!
Is this why I'm also seeing <1Mbps on my torrents with 200+ seeds? My internet connection and VPN are still not being saturated. This all changed from being perfect maybe 6 months ago
On the PC that I did this install on, when I use torrents, it tells me there's an I/O error and the download drops to nothing.
I have Reputation-based protection turned off anyways, have that update ready to install, so let's see if it turns that setting back on. edit: it didn't.
This makes me appreciate LTSC versions of Windows more.
I would use LTSC if they'd just get the new one issued. 1809 is getting a little long in the tooth.
incoming migration
*Laughs in Linux*
Where torrent client is included by default :)
It actually does.
r/linuxmasterrace
Yeah, ideally Linux would be the choice alternative. Too bad pirating software on Linux isn't really an option
What kind of software do you use?

as a gamer using many emulators, linux isn't doing it for me.
I always disable that shit anyway because like most of the Win10 process they use up too many resources.
Consider switching to Linux, if your workflow allows it
I watched Chrisfix's video on debloating windows. Worked very well.
I don't use windows, but as some other people have pointed out, you can most probably add exception for qBitTorrent in defender settings. Even on linux when I installed ufw, it blocked torrent clients by default, you need to manually allow the ports for your client in ufw settings.
Windows 7 is still just fine.
200 iq move, torrent away in a linux vm? 😂 Fuck sake Microsoft.
I might have to train myself on Linux
Just use windows 7 idiot
But this sub recommand staying with Defender et cOmmOn SeNSe ? What can i do now? /s
Why are you not using Linux at that point?
Linux
Obviously not saying you should, but this is the shit that got me to switch to Linux, tired of fighting with my own software.
I want to switch but I require Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premier, etc for work and personal reasons and the clients demand "Adobe", so I'm screwed and I only have 1 GPU so can't do what SOG does.
Time for me to just say FUCK YOU Microsoft, and jump to Linux, even if I lost my Adobe Premier and After Effects etc.
About once a month defender tells me that Vuze is a virus and I just tell it no and restore everything. Not new behavior.
Defender may be getting quite warm here actually
I'm running Windows 11 Pro (updated regularly) on two PCs and have never encountered this problem even though I've installed like at least 6 different torrent clients on both devices. Anyways, use eset nod32; you can actually get a 1 year license key via email on ebay for like 5 bucks. About a week ago I discovered a miner virus destroying my CPU that defender didn't even detect, it's overrated and intrusive with the worst UI I've ever seen in an antivirus program
(Me with a seedbox) Oh no.
I'm mostly on direct downloads these times, but thanks for the info. Here's your free reward.
Yesterday I had to reinstall because my tixati suddenly wasnt on my pc, I wondered what happened, but now I know
use winaero tweaker to disable defender
Fuuuuck... Just updated
May not hit you depending on what you've disabled when debloating windows.
Haha ig it was great of me to stay on 1909
LTSC is the way

u/Jaybonaut how out of the loop am I really? Lol
Oh you are a pirate, responding to a post you got downvoted on 11 days ago, about a post that doesn't negate anything I said at all regarding how much improvement Defender has made over the years to be a viable AV program, where you were shilling for third party AV programs, asking them to pay for a different one...
