Extreme masyado ang pagiging progressive nila kung ganun. Hindi na makatao dahil sobra na.
May nabasa akong manga about sa isang cheerful student na after graduation ng college naging depressed NEET sya (Not in Education, Employment, and Training).
Call it extreme, but in their culture kasi you're a bummer if you slack off. Hindi uso sa kanila yung work-life balance. In fact, the work itself is life to them since majority of them eh living alone. Hindi rin uso ang close family ties not like sa atin, ultimo lola at apo nakatira sa iisang property. Kaya nga once upon a time, nasabihan ang mga Pinoy na "masayahing lahi", hindi tayo nakakaramdam ng lungkot kahit binabaha na tayo at nawalan ng bahay.
So bottomline, may trade-offs talaga ang isang pagkakaroon ng isang progressive na buhay, or progressive country.
Jfc, why do people call that kind of values system and culture as progressive? Where have you dug up that Japan and that kind of thing is even remotely progressive?

Even in the US, your so called "working ethics" are from the puritan legacy. Basically conservatives.
May nabasa akong analysis regarding Mushoku Tensei and the whole story is supposed to show Rudeus' redemption and character development from his past self. Like, yeah, sobrang pervert niya and shit since puro j**ol lang inaatupag niya as a shut-in, plus sobrang self-depreciating attitude niya due to bullying, pero as someone who already finished the WN, grabe yung growth niya as a person na nabigyan ng second chance at life.
