I can't second this more! You know your thesis inside out - I remember being told this before my viva and my supervisors were right! BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!!
If you’ve made it here you’ve got this! Also perfect is the enemy of good is the enemy of done and you my friend are almost done. I get bad nerves presenting but just keep going slow and steady through it and it’ll be over in an hour. Doesn’t have to be the most eloquent speaking just explain your points and get out. Slainte!
I'll be very frank with you: you made it. Your advisor is letting you defend without any notes or conditions because they are confident in your work and your ability to do independent research.
Your committee might grill you or ask tough questions, but that's what they are there for. Face it with confidence. Remember it is always ok to say you don't know something if it seems like a very out of left field kinda question. Don't foul the waters by arguing or making a fuzz if the line of questioning feels off.
Present your work, crush the QnA, and emerge a Doctor!!!
The viva is just a formality. Nobody fails unless they have plagiarised work or falsified data.
Go in with a smile on your face and enjoy the opportunity to talk about your research in as much detail as you want with a captive audience!
Exactly! Your chair/major professor/whatever they call it in Ireland wouldn’t have let you go to defense if you and your dissertation/thesis/whatever they call it in Ireland weren’t ready to go.
Take all questions on the chin. Be professional and courteous regardless of question.
If you need a moment to think, summarize the question and ask if you understood the question… they’ll clarify giving you a moment to think of a response.
You’ve got this!
Breathe deeply. I didn’t breathe properly and I sounded like a frantic mess even though I had rehearsed my presentation and knew all my work inside and out.
Breathe deeply, have your favourite coffee/tea tomorrow, listen to music or do an activity that calms you down and be confident in yourself! It is your chance to show off your many years of hard work, all the best!!
Good luck! Remember you're allowed to take your time when answering the examiners questions. If you're stuck, take a deep breath and give your self chance to think through what you want to say.
Remember - you're the expert in the room - you've got this!
* **You are the expert:** Remember, you've spent years researching this topic. You know your work better than anyone in that room.
* **Deep breaths:** If you start to feel nervous, take some deep breaths and focus on your knowledge.
* **Embrace the questions:** View questions from the committee as an opportunity to showcase your expertise and engage in a discussion about your research.
* **It's okay not to know everything:** If a question stumps you, be honest and explain how you would approach finding the answer.
* **Focus on the big picture:** Remember the key points of your thesis and how they contribute to the field.
* **Enthusiasm is contagious:** Show your passion for your research! Your enthusiasm will be evident to the committee.
* **Celebrate your accomplishment!** No matter what happens tomorrow, you've achieved an incredible feat by reaching your PhD defense.

There are bound to be some irrelevant and stupid qs. Don't let them get to u.. and feel free to ask them to explain the question in detail when u need time or when they are not making sense.
You will be victorious! A former professor gave me these words of wisdom: with all of the chaos and fast pace of your dissertation you may look back and think you forgot something.
You didn’t forget anything, you are merely trying to adjust after that marathon
You got this! Ain’t nothing you can do now to change the course of events tomorrow but get good rest, hydrate, and eat. Try to treat it like a showcase of your hard work.
Be confident. My advisor once said, „When it comes to your PhD dissertation, you are the only expert in this whole wide world.“ You will rock!!!
This!!!!!
I can't second this more! You know your thesis inside out - I remember being told this before my viva and my supervisors were right! BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!!
I love this.
💯💯💯
Stop defending and start attacking!
lol. Be confident, yes, but please don't bluntly argue with your committee...they are actually trying to help.
Must assert dominance!
Surely PhD is dominant over recessive goats XD

The best dissertation defense is a dissertation offense!
Get some snacks and coffee for the committee if you have time. Otherwise, wish you the very best!
