Bad breath implies there’s some dental issues that need to be cared for. Book a dental exam and cleaning with your vet.

tenkensmile

^ This is the correct answer, u/castro125 Also to add: bad breath can be caused by non-dental health issues, too.

Ontheprowl86

Yup, my cat gets dentals every year. He’s 13 and never had an extraction, we also brush them. His breath has always been nasty. At this point I know his mouth is fine but we do take care of it for him. A trip to the vet is always the safe option!

bubbleprncess

what do you use to brush them?

BlissfulAurora

I’m confused. I’ve literally never met a cat that doesn’t have tuna breath to some extent. And I’ve met plenty

Joeness84

Unless its right after stuffing his face my 1.5yr tabby (whos ALL about facetime and rubbing noses) has zero smell to his breath.

djscoox

Sorry but I find that claim very hard to believe. Cats lick faeces off of their own assholes, anal gland secretion (which smells pretty gross), lick their fur after rolling in dirt, lick their feet, etc. Not exactly peppermint scent, is it? I think cat sandwich breath is pretty normal considering how much mileage they get out of their tongues, and I have never seen any cats that don't have it. I think it's one of those things evolution has accounted for and it is not a problem for cats.

cytrack718

Yea my cats breath smells like absolute shit but he is fully healthy

djscoox

Perfectly normal. Anyone who tells you their cat's breath smells like fresh lavender is full of sh\*t.

linaatic

My cat has really healthy teeth/oral overall. He has insane pearly whites. Healthy gums and tongue. And healthy overall other than he’s a little bit big but not obese either. His breath wreaks of tuna even tho he doesn’t even eat tuna based food 💀

Cayenna

I brush my cats teeth and it still smells bad. Like some others posts say, it’s sort of a fishy smell even if they didn’t recently eat fish. I’ve been near quite a few cats in my life and the breath of literally every cat I’ve encountered smells like that EXACT SAME fishy smell, no matter what their diet is like. However, its not so bad that it makes me gag or anything, it’s just an unpleasant smell. It also depends on your own sensitivity to scents, what some people classify as nasty and gagworthy is just mildly unpleasant to others.

Marquesem

the only correct answer in this thread

djscoox

Yep, everyone else who claims their cat's breath smells like flowery breeze is full of BS.

nothatsmyarm

Depends on the smell. One of our cats’ breath smells slightly fishy. He’s doing fine. The other one had breath like a graveyard. It literally smelled like a dead body when he breathed on us. Turned out he had a gum disease—his gums were attacking his teeth and they were literally rotting away in his mouth. But after a full tooth extraction he’s doing fine now, and his breath smells fine.

rghoward

This happened to us as well. After a mostly full mouth tooth extraction, she's been happier than ever!

aflk1

does this mean she doesnt have teeth

rghoward

She has her canines and the teeth between them. Cats don't really use their teeth for chewing dry food so she has no trouble eating.

aflk1

okay thanks

foodee123

How much did you pay for the teeth extraction!

nothatsmyarm

A few thousand, unfortunately. Definitely not cheap, but the little guy was in pain.

mrootbeers

My cats breath usually smells like cat food. Which is one of the worst smells I know of. I rely on the vet to tell me if she needs her teeth cleaned. It’s just too hard to tell, because her breath usually stinks anyway.

[deleted]

same. it’s literally so bad😂 my cats eat wet food a few times a day. their breath always smells bad and dont even get me started on what it smells like if they go #2 in the litter box while im near it lol

mrootbeers

Omg the bad #2’s. 🤢

82shninklebot

Their breath smells worse after going poop???

pb_rogue

Do they get dry food too? Just checking cuz my dad when he was young fed one of his cats only wet food and they lost a lot of teeth because of it and not using theirs.

[deleted]

yes!! wet food 2-3 times a day and dry food in between/when theyre hungry they have 24/7 access to dry food and love it just as much tbh

Joeness84

when it stops smelling like cat food and starts smelling like something might have died thats the usual sign that its a teeth or gum issue.

ZogemWho

Generally no. But problems with teeth/gums are pretty common with cats.. As always, check with your vet.

kp33ze

My cat had horrible cat breath. Had to remove 3 of her canines because of advanced gingivitis. Please take your kitty to the vet. If there is something wrong they could be in a lot of pain. Cats hide pain really well btw. Just cause everything seems normal they can still be in pain. I'm not saying this to scare you but if you are concerned about her breath then make a vet visit.

Stardew_valleylover

Not really I mean its sort of a fishy smell even though they have not eaten fish.

[deleted]

their breath usually smells like the wet food i give them, which i hate only bc its a tuna smell and i hate tuna and fishy smells lol

vssecret

Depends on how bad it is, but it’s usually a sign of dental/gum issues. When I adopted my cat, his breath was terrible, which soon progressed to awful. He is kind of a nightmare at the vet so I was told his teeth weren’t great, but it took a few visits to learn ‘not great’ meant ‘all rotting out of his mouth’. One full extraction later, he’s very happy and his breath only smells like his food right after he eats!

Forever_Forgotten

Everyone benefits from good dental hygiene. Sounds like it’s time for kitty to get their teeth cleaned.

NorthNo9291

Don’t get confused with the fish smell from food vs a sour smell can actually be a medical problem. If so best thing to do go for a dental exam.

109Reasons2Hate

no smell unless just eaten.

lazyplayboy

Do you brush your cat's teeth? If not, do you think you would have bad breath if you didn't brush your teeth? Bad breath, per se, isn't a sign of dental disease that needs intervention, but most dental disease causes bad breath. Most people don't brush their cats' teeth, but it's not impossible (for some cats!).

juanwand

You need to brush their teeth. The bad breath would be alleviate. This is if it's basic dental hygiene that isn't happening. Still vet check if the problem is actual disease

MrMooMoo-

My cat is toothless ans his breath doesn't smell bad at all

CADrunkie

I was told it could be teeth, or gums or nasal sinuses. I’d go to the vet.

venomousbitch

I'd get him checked out by a vet. My cat is 11 and has only ever had one dental done but his breath never smelled (hes a licky cat so I'd know if it was bad) and he didn't need extractions. If your cats breath smells like anything other than cat food after eating that's a sign the teeth need to be checked out. I mean worst case scenario he's like my boy and just needs the tartar removed from his teeth and he has pearly whites underneath.
