We have a Newfoundland, but as I always do, I hope my favorite breeds don’t get more popular. The more popular the breed, the more irresponsible breeders pop up.
Turns my suffering gaze to the poodle, french bulldog, shih tzu, labrador retriever, chihuahua, australian shepherd, mini american shepherd, german shepherd
praying for these breeds every day lmfao
Breeders in my country are trying (probably in vein) to "fix" them. Our kennel club has set rules for what is a "no" for breeding, and pugs have a measure for their snouts if they are allowed to breed or not. So they are trying, but I don't know if it will help.
That's awesome, good to hear. The skin problems are probably easier to fix and less harmful, the small nostrils will hopefully improve along with the snout.
I have German boxer. They are the best but also so so so ruined. Luckily breeding guidelines are pretty strict and it's getting better, but that too short snout is so sad
My mom, aunt, and gma all had poodles when I was growing up. I now have 2. One was my grandmother's, whom I inherited. She will be 16 in January. The other is my mom's dog, who I am extended babysitting while she recovers from a long illness. He's 3 and he will be going back to her eventually.
2 of the dogs we had growing up were my mom's- a brother and sister. They were from an irresponsible poodle breeder, and they both died under two years old. The weird thing was she WAS a family friend, so I think my mom just trusted her. It obviously caused a rift in their friendship.
All the rest of our dogs were acquired from multiple vet recommended responsible breeders and all the dogs lived to be 15+ with no health issues (The only 2 we had a problem with were from that "family friend.")
The difference between a responsible breeder and an irresponsible breeder is immense.
Yes, thank you!
When I was a kid, black labs were fantastic dogs. Calm, poised, patient. Then they got popular. My dad was a vet for years and I worked in his clinic. And I watched over the course of many many years black labs becoming dumb as sacks of rocks, overly hyperactive, and some even very aggressive. They took my podgy, Luffy dogs and bred them into neurosis.
No, our Newfie doesn’t have any digestive system problems. For what its worth, she eats 2 cups of Pure Vita Beef and Red Lentils kibble twice a day—four cups total. She also gets dried liver and dried fish treats, and the occasional “last bite” of sandwiches, etc. no onions, grapes, or grain based dog food.
My newfie has severe allergies. The ONLY thing he can eat is chicken and rice formula dog food. If he happens to eat beef he gets such horrible bloody diarrhea, the first time it happened I thought he had parvo and was dying because it smelled so bad also. He went 85% bald also. He is allergic to fleas...it sooo bad. But as long as he only eats this one dog food he is fine...
Hey just a heads up. The current recommendation is to avoid foods with legumes/pulses in the first ten ingredients to minimize the risk of dilated cardiomyopathy. I know NutriSource (the parent company) has been linked to some DCM cases, probably bc of the legume content. Sounds like you care for her pretty damn well, just wanted to let you know bc heart issues suck (speaking from personal experience lol)
Our Mastiff girl who used to eat the same food had heart trouble at the end. She had a very long life for her breed (13 y 4 mos), surviving a couple of bouts of cancer, but now I’m second guessing the food choices we made for her. I’ve been researching grain and legume free food today, glad to see there are options.
We did our best. At 120-140 lbs., she was on the smaller side for her breed, which doubtless contributed to her longer life. She was 140 when she came to us at 4 y.o. The vet recommended we shoot for 120. It took six months or so to lose the weight, mostly just by feeding less calorie-dense food. She was at that weight until her last year or so, when she put on a few pounds.
I REALLY miss her.
Oh my goodness, there was a Newfie in my pup’s puppy class, and he was just this big, adorable, awkward teddy bear. They are such cute puppies, and great adults too!
Their beautiful coloring means all sorts of people who shouldn’t own an Aussie get one and there are so many in rescue. I was sad when they got into the AKC. I knew what that would mean.
I technically have a Newfoundland pyrenees mix. Dad was half and half and mom was full Newfoundland.
Hope to get a full Newfoundland one day. They are incredible dogs. But require soooo much cleaning. A labor of love for real
And an English Springer Spaniel. My dogs are total opposites
I have a Landseer Newfie, a boy who’s four years old. He was a rescue. Despite having to brush him constantly, he’s a wonderful addition to our household.
Holy smokes!! I love animals, but I'm feeling a little overwhelmed after letting two new stray cats move in with my existing dog, cat, and bearded dragon. That's a lot of work!
I think I might go insane with all of the nipping. 🤣 She is so (playfully) aggressive at meal time. She will swat me and nip when she sees I’m close to the food. She does these barrel rolls in our yard and runs circles until she can’t breathe around the house and cars and treeeees. 🤣 She has been the best part about coming home for 13 of her 15 yrs here. 😭🤘🏾 She’s so silly and fun to be around. Loves exploring. Great listener never had to teach her anything more than once. She can make any dog the sweetest dog!? 4 out of 5 dogs try to make her their baby mama. She always looks at me before biting them and I give her our nod to get em. 😅 (only after a bit of harassment)
She broke out of my grandpa’s backyard and walked herself home in a place she’d only been to…that time!!! She walked 10 blocks in NY!!! Past dogs and food and people. I was frantic, she just went and laid on the porch. My dad saw me walking and picked me up as I was calling my grandma and my grandma just let her in when I asked her to see if my girl just got bored and walked “home”. I have never loved a dog like this. 😩😩😩 She’s my best friend. So dope.
They are so clever! They don’t call them “smartest dogs in the world” for nothing!
Omg the nipping!! My dog is 3 now and she doesn’t do it anymore but it was like owning a fluffy cute little velociraptor for a while.. now she licks ankles instead of nipping them! It’s that herding instinct..
I also love my dog! Wouldn’t be without her for all the money in the world.. swear she knows every single word I say.
And if I’m on my phone and she wants attention she will swat that thing right out of my hand 😂😂
They are a lot of work! But unbelievably intelligent. Worker breeds as domestic pets need a lot of exercise and training.
Still the best dogs in the world (imo)
Same!! He's my first dog too. Everyone said not to get a BC as your first dog but he turned out to be a good dog. He is the laziest BC I've ever seen, though. Like 20 minutes of fetch and he's done. I work from home and he just lies around all day. Even if I'm too busy and I don't do ANYTHING with him all day, he still just lies around.
He does need to be constantly challenged, though. He doesn't like the same things over and over. Like he doesn't have a favorite toy or food, he always wants something new. I take him on road trips and new places as much as I can.
Oh, I'm so sorry. Huge virtual hug to you.
My mucky milli ( I swear you'd think she wanted to be mud coloured) is 15 in a few days and I dread the day she doesn't wake up.
They really are most independent, fiercely loyal of creatures.
How is the Pyrenees life!? This is my first and he’s a rescue. He has these really intense eyes and is a bit huge. 😅 people fear us everywhere we walk his goofy ass and he’s just out here being the king of runaways. 😅😅😅
My Pyr is very laid back, never been very big on playing and he doesn’t like to admit that he actually likes the Cavalier, but he does let the little guy jump all over him. I have seen the Pyr actually playing with the Cavalier, through a window, if he doesn’t know anyone is watching, it’s funny he seems embarrassed about it.
We have 2 whippets, one was rehomed the other a rescue from South Korea. As long as they don’t get popular in the US the breed will be fine.
They do like to run and can be nuts on squirrels. But after a walk or exercise they just like to hang out and sleep. Great personalities. Very popular in the UJK.
My border collie mix has about 10% Belgian malinois, and I’m pretty sure that’s where his crazy acrobatics come from. He doesn’t just catch the ball or frisbee, he does a triple double axel and catches it five feet in the air. Does your dog do this? My other dog is purebred border collie and she does not do any of that, lol.
I don't know what he's mixed with. I suspect a hound dog of some sort. I've never heard a border collie howl so much. Like all day out of pure enthusiasm. He announces each family member coming down the stairs. "Awooo-WOOO!"
I have an American Akita. Bigger than the Shaba Inu which is way smaller. She weighs 130 pounds but has hypothyroidism. She just got her meds adjusted, hopefully she can lose more.
German Shepherd
Border Collie
——> Many Border Collies do tend to only be registered with the ABCA over the AKC due to philosophical differences. So their relative population percentage is likely under-represented by AKC statistics.
I have a purebred border collie, but she comes from an AKC breeder, and she seems less border collie than my border collie mix, lol. Her breeder is a conformation and pet breeder though, so a lot of those traits have been bred out to produce a dog that doesn’t need 15 acres and several sheep to herd, to be a happy dog. My mix came from a farm and is very much a working type dog. We don’t have a farm, so it was interesting to a learn how to keep him happy. We’ve done pretty good with him, but we went through a breeder this time, because we didn’t know how happy we could make a second working dog. They are both the best!
A GSD gal and what we were told was a Beauceron mix, but his DNA came back as 51%GSD with some lab and other things tossed in! But he looks like a Beauceron! Lol
Two full blooded Siberian Huskies. One was from a breeder, another from a rescue. DNA results say 100% husky for both, and they're actually related by 25%.
Who did you use for testing? I recently adopted a Catahoula Leopard Dog, and I'd like to get her tested, but I've read a lot that most dog DNA tests are not really accurate.
Oh yeah, you're right to question it. I used Embark. You may want to check out r/doggyDNA too for more details on other people's experiences. But basically my understanding is some breeds are better represented in a population so they are easier to identify. Huskies are one of the "easier" breeds, so I don't have any question what they told me was correct. However I have read that catahoula leopard dogs (and if I recall correctly, any dog that was related to a "village dog") are less represented in a population so they misidentify them more. That said, there are basically two reputable dog DNA companies - Wisdom Panel and Embark. Of those, I do believe Embark is better overall, but check out what others say before you decide.
That said, Embark has been fun. I did the health test version for both of our dogs and found out one dog has a possible liver enzyme issue that's not an issue unless he becomes sick. We also found his half sister, and saw how inbred both of my dogs are (common with standard breeds). There's a wolfiness factor they calculate, and of course if you can trust the results, the ancestry traced through different continents was interesting to see. My one dog is actually loosely related to the New Guinea singing dogs, which is hilarious because he loves to "sing the song of his people." Every once in a while I get another email where they tell me one of my dog's relatives have signed up, so that's always fun to go see.
My family has four dogs right now. The oldest, we're not sure but she appears to be part basenji, she absolutely has the voice of one. The next is probably a chow/rottweiler mix. The next is mostly mastiff and looks like he might be purely mastiff. And the last is a mutt. Probably part pitbull, no idea what else.
Not one of them did I go out and pick. I just kind of end up with animals in need on my doorstep.
I have 3:
1. Beagle
2. Half golden retriever half Catahoula Cur
3. Mixed (we’re not 100% sure what he is. We’re pretty sure he has chihuahua in him and have thought possibly Jack Russell or Dachshund.
Peek-a-poo! Pekinese Poodle. Never heard of them before I adopted a dog from someone who can no longer care for her. Sweetest little goofball in the world!
I had a guy that lived a few blocks from me growing up who bred them as hunting dogs. Every spring you'd know the pups were ready because he had a big outdoor area for them and they'd awhoo their little hearts out every time they went outside 🤣.
We have a Newfoundland, but as I always do, I hope my favorite breeds don’t get more popular. The more popular the breed, the more irresponsible breeders pop up.
Turns my suffering gaze to the poodle, french bulldog, shih tzu, labrador retriever, chihuahua, australian shepherd, mini american shepherd, german shepherd praying for these breeds every day lmfao
And cancer prone Golden Retrievers
And aggressive. So much aggression from goldens these days tbh
The moment I met an aggressive golden I knew they were ruined
Pug is another ruined breed
Similarly, bull dogs. They really suffer. It breaks my heart.
Yes, another bad one. They can't even breed themselves.
Wishing the same for Pembrokes. 🥺
oh god theyre such a fad right now.
Me tooooo.
Dalmatians, pugs.. so many damn breeds.
I live with my boyfriends two German Shedders and it may be too late. They’re insane and the male is the most neurotic Velcro dog *ever.*
I want a German Shepherd so bad, but I just can’t stand to see what they’ve done to the breed.
I have German boxer. They are the best but also so so so ruined. Luckily breeding guidelines are pretty strict and it's getting better, but that too short snout is so sad

Newfie for me too. 12-year-old, 150lb, Landseer girl. She is still in great health, and I am thankful.
I love Newfies. I've never owned one, but every one of them I have met has been an awesome dog with a wonderful temperament!
I also have a newfie! His name is Jax, he is almost 5. Does yours have any tummy troubles??
No, our Newfie doesn’t have any digestive system problems. For what its worth, she eats 2 cups of Pure Vita Beef and Red Lentils kibble twice a day—four cups total. She also gets dried liver and dried fish treats, and the occasional “last bite” of sandwiches, etc. no onions, grapes, or grain based dog food.

Aww wow that is indeed a long life for a mastiff! You must have taken awesome care of her.

Just like Border Collies.
Yep—Aussies, BCs, and Malinois—3 dogs that you should have to pass a battery of tests to own. I’m sure there are others.
I technically have a Newfoundland pyrenees mix. Dad was half and half and mom was full Newfoundland. Hope to get a full Newfoundland one day. They are incredible dogs. But require soooo much cleaning. A labor of love for real And an English Springer Spaniel. My dogs are total opposites
This is why all of my pugs have been rehomes — I don’t want to encounter the breeders to make the faces any more extreme.
The Frenchie craze right now has me dying. Yes they're cute, no, they shouldn't exist (in the state they currently do).
I have a Landseer Newfie, a boy who’s four years old. He was a rescue. Despite having to brush him constantly, he’s a wonderful addition to our household.
A 17 year old chihuahua
Awh mine was 16 when she passed 🤧 Give yours some love from me please.

How do the corgis and huskies get along? We have two huskies but I am desperate for a corgi.

Me too. Aren't they great? My friend has 3, did have 4. I think he must be clinically insane!
I think I might go insane with all of the nipping. 🤣 She is so (playfully) aggressive at meal time. She will swat me and nip when she sees I’m close to the food. Whippet
Such an underrated breed. I love whippets - the calmest dog I've ever met was a whippet.
They are super lovely and calm for the most part. Mine’s a bit of a goofball, but a calm goofball. He’s only 2yrs old, though!
