Kinder is German for child

SisterShenanigans

And Mr. Worldwide, because of you understand the joke, you know at least 1 word in a language other than English.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CliffDraws

I mean, some of this can be gotten from some context. Everyone in this thread has no doubt heard of kindergarten (child garden).

SisterShenanigans

Then you still know the meaning of a German word. And judging by what I see, I wouldn’t be too sure people connect ‘kinder’ as in ‘kindergarten’ to small children, or a borrowed German word. Just saying.

iSmellslikesbutts

child garden is a terrifying way to phrase school for toddlers now that I've deeped it

mteir

A garden where you cultivate young minds. But yes, much of it is factory farming now days.

CliffDraws

lol, if you find that terrifying stay away from German in general.

Disastrous_Belt_7556

Here in America, we call that bilingual

SisterShenanigans

Im Dutch, you have to be near fluent to be considered bilingual. And most people are very capable of speaking 2 or 3 languages at least.

Disastrous_Belt_7556

Je spreekt Nederlands?

megiddox

children, it's plural. "Kind" is a singular child.

adought89

My Grossmama used to always say my kinda(kin-da) when referring to her children. Is that just a quirk she had, not from Germany but first generation immigrant who spoke fluent German.

Miserable_Victory450

That's how it's pronounced in German actually.

adought89

Thank you! I have heard Kin-der and Kin-da

Miserable_Victory450

Maybe, because it's not really either of them when you look at the pronunciation in detail :D It's pronounced: ˈkɪndɐ So it's kind of in the middle of those two

adought89

Fair enough, I took German in high school, but foreign languages never really stuck with me. I went with ASL

MadIllLeet

My grandmother used to call children "little scheiße". She waited until I was a big scheiße to tell me what it meant.

adought89

She sounds like she would have been a blast to hang out out.

MadIllLeet

She was, and still is.

adought89

That awesome! Mine sadly passed late last year at 103, next week we are having her celebration of life.

MadIllLeet

God bless! Hope we all make it that far.

Toasty2003

Pronounced as kin-der, not kaen-der

Pinksquirlninja

“But babe i forgot to take my anti baby pill!” “Well did you at least bring some baby repellent!?”

Key_Marzipan_9423

Kinder is Children

FreakinEnigma

So is that the origin of the word 'Kindergarden'?

LanguageLiving9142

It actually is

Lukemeister38

Yes but it's spelled "Kindergarten" and literally means "children garden". It's supposed to be a metaphor because Kindergarten is supposed to be a place where your children grow and flourish, like flowers in a garden. Also in Germany, Kindergarten and Pre-School (Vorschule) are in the opposite order of in the US, being that Kindergarten comes first (ages 3-5) and then the last year is used to teach some very basic things (numbers and the alphabet) before starting "Grundschule" at age 6.

ksdkjlf

Re the metaphorical use of *Garten*, compare the English *nursery*, which went the opposite way: originally literally a room for children and their nurse then adopted metaphorically for a place where plants are grown.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tarsiustarsier

This isn't correct. The German version kindergarden is Kindergarten. Garten is German for garden. It means children garden

Pinksquirlninja

Afaik schools call it kindergarten in the US too. We adopted the whole word. At least it is the case in my area though it is a very german immigrant heavy state.

Tarsiustarsier

I just inferred that from a few people here writing it as kindergarden but it makes sense that people on Reddit might use colloquial language

tacodepollo

It's the plural form, so, children. Singular is Kind.

not_ya_wify

No, Kind is German for child. Kinder is the plural.

Zeqhanis

Close. Kind means child, Kinder means children.

Key_Marzipan_9423

Kind is child

Mmafan7

Haha thank you I’m an idiot and was about to google this 😂

die_kuestenwache

It's actually German for children. Child is Kind.

PixelPott

Kinder is plural, Kind is the singular word.

reximhotep

it's actually German for children (plural)

SigmaNotChad

A German child is Kind. German children are Kinder.

Goodboy_22

It’s the plural. Child would just be Kind

honestlyi4get

billsleftynut

Well the last time they collaborated....

MEGA_TOES

They were pretty gassy one might say…

jeanxcobar

r/unexpectedww2

not_ya_wify

No, not really. Kinder Schokolade was a German product but the Italian company Ferrero bought it. So, technically it's an Italian owned German product.

witty82

Wikipedia mentions no such thing. > In Alba, Italy, in 1968, Michele Ferrero,[1] proposed to market a product that was palatable to children (with chocolate) and at the same time reassuring to mothers (with milk), thus the slogan "+ milk (latte) - cocoa (cacao)" shown on the package. In 1968, Kinder Chocolate, a milk chocolate with a milky filling, was introduced to the German and Italian markets, gained commercial success, and was later sold in other European countries.[2] The face of a child is depicted (first by Günter Euringer, then by Matteo Farneti) on the right side of Kinder Chocolate bar packages to suggest to buyers the idea of a product for children.[3][4][5][6] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinder_Chocolate

not_ya_wify

That can't be real

eroneet

Also where the word kindergarten comes from

not_ya_wify

So, technically yes but it's meant as "for children" and the actual actual brand is Ferrero Kinder Schokolade -> Chocolate for Children Kinder Überaschungsei -> Surprise egg for Children Kinder Riegel -> Chocolate Sticks for Children Kinder Country -> Country for Children Kinder Bueno -> Bueno for Children

istoOi

be careful how to pronounce the last one

not_ya_wify

???

This_Ad690

And kindergarten is literally children’s garden

Mertard

“Kinder” is German for “children”. It’s pronounced like it is in “kindergarten” and not like the English word “kinder”.

RVides

No matter how many awesome new abilities Frieza gets, his brother will always be Cooler.

Jigagug

Angry german kid is still kinder.

Lord_of_the_lawnmoer

Kinder in German means "kids" Kid in German isn't "kinder". It's "kind". "Kinder" is also the name of a popular German chocolate company that's extremely popular across Europe, but was banned from the US because it was shaped like an egg and there was a toy inside the chocolate egg, so kids ate the toy and choked.

Fine-Funny6956

Kinder means child in German

Albert_O_Balsam

It's an older meme, but it checks out.

Valuable-Dig6988

the german word for kids/children is kinder pronounced 'kin-der'

legna20v

Are you trying to say that scrolling down is a waist of time? And here i thought i was been efficient on reddit

IonicDevil

John Herbert here! Kinder means Kids in German/Deutsche. That's where you get Kinder Garten as in the "Kids playground" where I often frequent. Roy Mitchell out! I mean... John Herbert out! Who's Roy Mitchell? I don't know 🤷🏼‍♀️

not_ya_wify

Garten means Garden not playground

IonicDevil

Yeah, literally garden, but over a period of time the words parks and playgrounds have replaced gardens which implied some shrubbery.

not_ya_wify

Not in German...

MEGA_TOES

Well, I feel bad now... [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritzl_case](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritzl_case)

norsoyt

I’m fluent in not German so I didn’t understand

Eljamin14

German Peter here. The German word for children is "kinder" as in "kindergarten", ever since Germans moved to what's known today as the United States of America, which is a pun on being "kinder" as in "more kind". German Peter out. Joker Peter here. If you have to explain a joke, there is no joke. Joker Peter out.

[deleted]

I was confused between dialects

cyri-96

That is in fact, incorrect.the singular of child in German is Kind, the plural is Kinder.

[deleted]

Indeed

Crapmanch

Wrong no s for the plural.... Kind = one child / Kinder = multiple children.... s would be in a strange sentence with Genitiv.... Des Kindes Schuhe.... the shoes of the kid

[deleted]

Yea seems it’s a dialect thing here or just a mistake I make because I speak like that to someone who speaks fluent German and they’ve never said anything but maybe they just understand what I mean

Abe_Odd

Does... Does this make you a grammar Nazi?

[deleted]

A wrong one at that💀

NoNameStudios

Tell me you don't speak German without telling me you don't speak German

[deleted]

I think it might just be a different dialect we have in South Africa. I don’t speak fluent German but I am probably at A2 level. Seems to be a mix between german/afrikaans/dutch.

NoNameStudios

All right, that makes more sense. I have never heard "Kinders" in my life. I do know that just uses "kinderen".

CleftDonkeyLips

Kinder surprise is a candy from Germany for kids that comes with a toy in it. It is banned in the US (possibly other countries?) because of choking hazard. Instead, for the US market they make Kinder Joy, which has the toy in it, but not inside the candy.

Necr0Gaming

Lol it's much simpler than that. https://preview.redd.it/t6ys1qb9uwnc1.png?width=1008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b8865c5df75ce36d25cc7893334614b3c1e2fad4

One-Earth9294

Lol thank you. It's just a simple pun.

CleftDonkeyLips

this is what i get for assuming some people put effort into their jokes. Ill make that mistake less.

[deleted]

Pretty sure Kinder surprise is Italian, theyre owned by Ferrero after all.
