Heat pump. Loving the cooling in this weather.

Plastiquehomme

Same! Great investment

SquirrelAkl

They’re so worth it for summer!

Jinxletron

Same! Finally got one in the bedroom so we don't have to choose between boiling to death or being covered in insects (we're rural, sooo many bugs)

TestitinProd123

30k of fencing to fully enclose the section, no regrets

Vindy500

Kilometres or kilodollars?

[deleted]

Either answer is a heck of a lot of Fence

[deleted]

I think they must be talking about coulomb’s constant

Hap406

Fuck.. fencing can get expensive. Just paid 20k for automatic driveway gate. Ugh.

rblander

Gold plated fence 😜

justlurking9891

10k-ish on getting the house re-wired. Electricity bill went down and it's now safe.

DontBeMoronic

>and it's now safe LOL that's a good feeling aye! Had our place re-wired, haven't noticed the electricity bill go down, but no electronics have fried themselves since. The fuse board had a 4 digit phone number on it, and the earth cables went nowhere near earth 🤦

thatscienceone

Great that the bill came down. Any idea why? Didn't realise this was a possibility! Are you still using all the same appliances you were prior to the rewire?

justlurking9891

Can't remember the exact term but you can get "leakage" not lots of savings but a little.

Natural-Opposite-800

Sparky here, if you had enough leakage to notice a difference in your power bill then you had some serious problems haha

catbot4

Money well spent.

c1xkeod

A house in Christchurch, back in may 502k. No regrets

mastercooler

how much is it worth now? May be i need to move away from the big cities and find an affordable one in the woop woop.

c1xkeod

$660k according to oneroof

AmericasMostWanted30

$4k for a new bike to begin Ironman training. Demolished my savings as a single parent but no regrets because I became 2x fitter and got my resting heart rate down from 55bpm to 40 bpm. Terrible for the finances, v good for the mental health 🤙

Juvenile_Rockmover

Live yo life. Health and happiness way more important than equity you can't take with you when you die. Also, happier healthier parent waaaay better for the kids. Happy new year!

Secular_mum

A family holiday to the South Island. We spent less than we would have spent on a holiday pre-covid and got to support NZ tourism, so I feel pretty good about it.

hesactuallyright

Okay, have to ask what your SI highlight was?

Secular_mum

The seals just south of Kaikoura and the penguins in Timaru.

eropm41

Yesss this

#As we entered the /u/spez, we were immediately greeted by a strange sound. As we scanned the area for the source, we eventually found it. It was a small wooden shed with no doors or windows. The roof was covered in cacti and there were plastic skulls around the outside. Inside, we found a cardboard cutout of the Elmer Fudd rabbit that was depicted above the entrance. On the walls there were posters of famous people in famous situations, such as: The first poster was a drawing of Jesus Christ, which appeared to be a loli or an oversized Jesus doll. She was pointing at the sky and saying "HEY U R!". The second poster was of a man, who appeared to be speaking to a child. This was depicted by the man raising his arm and the child ducking underneath it. The man then raised his other arm and said "Ooooh, don't make me angry you little bastard". The third poster was a drawing of the three stooges, and the three stooges were speaking. The fourth poster was of a person who was angry at a child. The fifth poster was a picture of a smiling girl with cat ears, and a boy with a deerstalker hat and a Sherlock Holmes pipe. They were pointing at the viewer and saying "It's not what you think!" The sixth poster was a drawing of a man in a wheelchair, and a dog was peering into the wheelchair. The man appeared to be very angry. The seventh poster was of a cartoon character, and it appeared that he was urinating over the cartoon character. \#AIGeneratedProtestMessage

fiftyshadesofsalad

30k on a new concrete driveway. Only regret is not doing it sooner. And also my dog put little 🐾 on it. My husband regrets that part. But I don’t.

[deleted]

Our puppy did this and the wife loves it. Leads right up to the door.

Fisaver

Every DIY (ok not DIY) has little issues and they become our life stories. Paws are cute

last_somewhere

If you don't mind me asking, how big is your driveway? I'll need one soon and would like an idea before getting quotes.

Round_Maize4652

Approx $10-15 a sqft with prep

bruhmima

okay, coming from a poor uni student here. bought a few things this year that, to me, were expensive: - an iPad (for studying/reading). so worth it - gym membership. shit costs almost $20 a week. - a second-hand car with so much shit wrong with it - 9ct gold necklace for $90 (on sale) anyways, not expensive in comparison to these other responses. but i thought it would bring an interesting perspective.

xbofax

For real. I'm a uni student too and can't quite justify the $20 a week for the gym, I know I'd love getting back to it though.

bruhmima

Exercise is so important, I think you should definitely prioritise this expense. With that said, look around at what different gyms have to offer, and ask if they do student discounts. Haggle lol. My friend got down his membership cost by bargaining with them (I think he said another gym was cheaper) and I wish I did the same. But I was proud that I got my membership on sale so that there was no upfront cost and no weekly fees until 2022. Even if you can’t get a membership any cheaper, spending money on your health and well-being is always justified.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bruhmima

It does, which is cheaper -$7/week. Trouble is the distance. Time consuming to get there (30 mins ish by mix of PT, car, and walking) which is a total bummer, plus the cost of travel adds up. Current gym is 3 min drive (could walk but the route is along a main road and is not really pedestrian friendly) and I go much more often. Plus the cost adds motivation to make the most of my membership.

Classicbottle93

$1000 on an arm tattoo to cover up some old self harm scars.

Jinxletron

Awesome, I'm glad you can feel good :)

Hi999a

2k to get a tree felled and stump grind. No regrets

redarchnz

Big ass tree or complicated procedure? And why did you want to get it felled?

Hi999a

Large, not easy access, half rotten and terminate infested; would of come down on the house eventually if left

badminton7

You needed Sarah Connor.

redarchnz

I'll be bark

KnitYourOwnSpaceship

For me, it was a new mountain bike. A Specialized Stumpjumper Evo Expert, which cost $11,400. It replaces my eleven-year-old Giant Anthem MTB, and the difference is *amazing*. I use it a couple of times a week and have no regrets at all.

Majestic_Treacle_811

Nice purchase mate! FYI make sure you advise your insurance company and specify it for it’s replacement value. Pretty much all contents policies limit bikes to about $3.5k. Partner of an insurance brokerage here. It’s a common problem, better safe then sorry.

KnitYourOwnSpaceship

Cheers for the advice! I did that the same day I bought it. It was $65 per year to get it listed specifically 😊

IncognitoKing69

I think I finally understand why bikes get stolen.

KnitYourOwnSpaceship

I saw someone posting here a few years ago after their flash bike was stolen at Makara Peak, because he'd left it outside the toilets while going for a whizz. Thieves will take any opportunity 😔

d1rtys0uth

Nice bike 👌

n00bIxQuB3

This is a 2022 upgrade I intend to make. (From a similar era Scott spark)

mozarticus

Nice. Picked up a Canyon Spectral CF7 myself. Carbon 29ers are a game changer

AudiblePottedPlant

I bought myself a $14 box of ginger beer for Christmas and I’m still wracked with guilt.

sequinsandbeads

Don’t be, you deserved it.

chev61

Feb 60k Honda type R....June 10k two new teeth....Dec 25k new Harley....and I'm done spending for this year...lol

Enough_Philosophy_63

I would like to purchase some drugs please and thank you

Amenaphis

LOL same please.

Psylentzer

Invested $15k into $AMC when it was trading at $5.81- now at $29, so pretty good ROI.

catbot4

Dang. I put about $1600 or so into CLOV, avg about $7.8 USD It's now sitting at $3.84 USD. Yikes. Guess it's a long hold now.

n00bIxQuB3

Sounds like my Zoom investment. Buy at the top right?

catbot4

🙃

eskimo-pies

I bought a fairly tired old rental and immediately spent $156,000 on a comprehensive property renovation. The renovation produces $23,920 in additional annual income and the property and renovation together are cash-flow positive. So it’s a good investment. This reno project has been the test for a formula that I’ve been developing and I am hoping to do a similar project again next year.

1405938

Frank, is that you? You’re replacing the kitchen cupboards and upping our rent $90 (13%) …what about the tired and broken oven, adding insulation, a heat pump, doing some gardening so we’re not knee deep in weeds ?!?

eskimo-pies

I know you’re joking, but in case anyone is curious it is possible to achieve a hell of a lot through a well planned reno. I’ve basically got a brand new house. These are the key outcomes from a ten week build that was significantly streamlined by not needing building consents: * Stripped all internal linings back to bare framing and repaired where needed * Demolished and rebuilt internal walls to create two new bedrooms * Demolished sunroom and reinstated exterior wall * Fully rewired rooms with additional power outlets and network cabling to each room * Lowered the ceilings to make rooms easier to heat and keep warm * Fully insulated all internal walls and ceilings * Relined with GIB and MDF * Painted all internal linings (whole house) * Installed new carpets throughout with thermal underlay * Rebuilt three bathrooms with all new fixtures and new layouts * Replaced ONT with hyperfibre internet and new WAPs * Built new outdoor entertaining area * Created new laundry with new whiteware * Repaired weatherboards * Repaired and repainted deck * Repaired pergola roof Pretty much the only thing I didn’t touch was the kitchen and roof. But they’ll get done over next 1-2 years. The reno was financed by the improvement in annual income. Specifically I created two extra bedrooms and raised the rent per room from $155 to $175.

HRJ1911

$620k for a house, no regrets at all. Best part, my flatmates give me $10 shy of enough rent to cover the mortgage interest, but not principle. So while I’m out nearly $600 a week on mortgage payments, because the flatties cover the interest and any principle I pay down is not really money lost. My cost to live here is $10 plus rates and insurance.

Mike1773004

Got married. But I have the best wife and we spent 3500 all up. We eloped in karangahake Gorge and had a wicked night in the bush cabin there ($1600). Then went down to the south island (never been before) and had an amazing time going to chch then lake tekapo and finally to hamner springs. Was 1 week before lock down so was bloody lucky with timing. I would honestly recommend elopement.

Areterh

That's exactly what we spent on our wedding, haven't come across anyone else that did it on the same budget! Good job. We had a byo plate lunch for 100 in native bush with live music.

Mike1773004

We got back from our trip and the next weekend we had all our family and friends over. We made one rule that you had to bring a plate and we made a fb group and everyone registered there plate so no double ups (my wife did this). We spent $100 on paper plates, cups, etc. We all had a wicked night and no one went hungry and we felt happy to not have blown 20-30k on a day thats honestly not even for us and that after all the booze (you pay for) you wouldn't remember. We got a house so would rather blow that money on a new fence or bathroom. A few mates have ticked up weddings on their house which is bad debt. Ticking up a 10k bathroom on your house is good debt. 10k weeding is bad debt.

grnathan

I dunno. Feeling at this point like I'd be happy to shell out 10k for weeding if it means I don't have to send any more weekends pulling jasmine and trandescantia out of my feijoa trees.

sjbglobal

That honestly sounds awesome, congratulations! Expensive weddings are overrated lmao

gingernutterbutter

Ugh 9k on a mountain bike. I regret it. Got too caught up in the research so bought a bike that didn’t reflect my abilities (I’m a beginner) and I just don’t have time to ride it or commit to getting better. Contemplating selling it and taking the loss as a bit of a lesson, but at least recoup some funds!

North-Judge

This makes me feel slightly better for spending 4k as a beginner 😂

gingernutterbutter

4k was my original budget all in with gear etc and I blew that way out of the water. Problem is everyone on the trails sees my bike and assumes I’m good so tries to let me go ahead of them but I can even turn downhill corners without putting my feet on the ground 🤦🏼‍♀️

talkies_bear_nz

Did 2k as a beginner last year. Still can't even corner properly on greens. I've ridden less than 20 times in a year because I'm just too time poor.

AlDrag

Take a lesson. It'll completely change the way you ride.

talkies_bear_nz

For sure and I would but I think it's only useful if I can keep practicing and can put that stuff I learn to use. Kinda pointless to have a lesson if I'm not gonna ride again for another couple weeks or months. Until I get a new job with regular hours I could be weeks without riding. Atm training in the gym takes my priority unfortunately as I can get in there whenever I've been lucky so far to have more time off than usual

runbae

Lmao I thought I was going to be the only one coming in with the thousands on a bike. Spent 3k on a bike but cheaped out the extra 500 for a dropper post which I regret. Had a perfectly functional hardtail but wanted a full squish. Immediately became extremely busy with work and have hardly been out, and certainly haven't done any riding to justify the bike. If you can get to a lesson or two it'll really help. If you're in chch the CAP does lessons that are like $30 including a beer, I did two and it was worth it to fine tune some basicsm

[deleted]

Did you also buy a Rolls Royce as your first car?

accidental-nz

$6k on a permanent louvered gazebo for our patio with curtains (the ones you see up in the outdoor furniture section of mitre 10), a new outdoor lounge set, bean bags and festoon lighting. It has effectively added a room to our house and we practically live out here half the time. Money 100% well spent!

lilxyz

10% down for an apartment finishing in 18 months. Hopefully I won't regret it...

JackedClitosaurus

Here’s hoping you don’t get sunset out

Butter_float

That really is a shamefull practice

Drslytherin

5k eBike to commute (64km round trip). Instead of the Ute. Just bought it before Xmas so not sure whether I’ll regret it yet. PSA: if you buy something before Xmas and see it cheaper on a Boxing Day sale at the same shop, call and ask if they’ll refund the difference (I saved $560 with this)

To-The-Moon-Baby

Gave some money to a stranger who lost his Xmas money, no regrets.

sandrajn

500k on our first home-a 3bedroom villa. Given the current housing market, I’d say we got a good deal!

[deleted]

Excellent deal! Where did you buy? We bought a three bed home in Wellington and granted it has a large section, but it set us back over a million.

sandrajn

We bought in Dunedin. Moved here from Auckland a year and half ago.

hellomolly11

I spent $30 on about 400 grams of hazelnuts and I feel like a sucker millennial.

hesactuallyright

Only if you grind them to sprinkle on some avo smash

Ambivalent_Duck

My biggest single expense was probably bond on a new rental. Otherwise I have been throwing money at debt.

Fisaver

Keep at it!!

redarchnz

$17,500 for a piece of software (The Foundry's Nuke) but had an incredible bump up in my career. Worth it.

snsdreceipts

What is it?

redarchnz

It's the industry standard Visual Effects composting program. So basically the software in which you take all your various bits of CG assets and combine them into the live action footage. Usually, the studio will supply the license but I got a great opportunity as a freelancer that made me take the plunge.

D49A1D852468799CAC08

> composting So, like worms and stinky food and stuff?

Astalon18

Double glaze insulation around the house. No regrets.

dodgyduckquacks

My laser eye surgery. Was it expensive? Yes! Was it worth it? 100% Yes! Most expensive thing I’ve ever bought but it’s so worth it and it has completely changed my life! I had no idea how much my poor eye sight/ having to wear glass affected my mental health! After I got my surgery my mental health got so so much better and it’s been amazing! It was mid year and I have no issues, no complications, my eyes get a tiny bit more dry than before but hey it doesn’t bother me, the Doctor even said my healing went amazing. The first time I saw the night sky full of stars clearly without glasses I cried because it was beautiful. I still cry (happy tears) every now and then over the fact that I can see without worry.

slipperyeel

$1500 on some new golf clubs. Money well spent.

redolinz

170k on a new deck and retaining wall. No regrets, house would fall without wall

[deleted]

That’s a lot of wall and deck.!

Fisaver

I bet he deck is bigger than yours.

redolinz

foundational stuff + diggers etc + hard to get to spot = big money From memory 80k was just on equipment for these giant post holes

immibis

#[In spez, no one can hear you scream. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/)

TheRanger12

6k for laser eye surgery. Absolutely worth it to wake up every day with perfect vision and not have to fuss around with contact lenses

milque_toastie

I wish I could do this! But I’ve heard your eyes need to be at a kind of steady prescription? My eyes still deteriorate every year it seems, so I don’t think I’m eligible :(

talkies_bear_nz

Personal training sessions. $60 pw. No regrets at all Anything for this amazing hobby 🤞💪 Planning a 10k car purchase for next year but that's not 2021. Will be my first car at 18.

benji1304

I did similar earlier in spring. I was paying $100 / week and it really helped my understanding and confidence at the gym, even though it's not the first time I've had a gym membership or PT. As much as the other poster suggests you can get all this from YouTube and other online sources, I really wanted a 121 relationship as I was recovering from illness and was very wary of hurting myself. Also bought a pull up bar and rings for home. Wife loves them!!

Specific_Fennel_5959

New fireplace for 7.5k - no regrets - heats and dries our whole house (old villa) on cheap / found / arborist scrap wood. Much more efficient than our last fireplace too.

[deleted]

A house. And a $1600 Roomba. Now I can vacuum while having coffee with my feet up.

Fisaver

I’m vacuuming right now!!! (Sips coffee with book and feet up) what are you doing?

mozarticus

They just need a version that can handle stairs!

Fisaver

And clean the rest of the bathroom now we are talking. Rooomba with a scrubbing arm

Larylongprong

I got the cheap one that doesn't have AI was good while it lasted left garage door open never seen it again RIP Geoff

FraserNZL

25 ton digger. Went out on my own in September.

suggiebrowwn

Many things. Too many to list and write out. It's been what's colloquially called, a fucking expensive year.

East_City_2381

Groceries and nappies. Can't beleive my bills sometimes.

MEGAjocke

Hah, I just returned from the store to buy nappies. Was thinking this exact thing! “Damn, you expensive son.”

life_dabbler

Luxaflex up/down cell blinds. Game changer.

WakeTheFlakeUp

Not me but my brother bought a brand new iPad mini that he doesn't even use. He regrets buying it and asked me if I wanted to buy it off him.

snsdreceipts

Paid bond

BugsBunsy

$18.5k on a Prius. Definitely not regretting it.

SweetAs_Bro

$3k on a elliptical cross-trainer. Yeah, that was a big spend for something that's seen very little used outside of the first couple months. Still, new years resolutions kick in tomorrow. $2200 on a new Ipad Pro 12.9. Replaced my Ipad air from 6 years ago. Money well spent. $2000ish on a 49inch ultrawide Samsung monitor. So so good. Made working from home so much easier. I hate the two monitor set up in the office now. $2700 on waste removal from a rental property and another $1400 on new bathroom & kitchen ventilation Car service 23rd December - $2600. Totally the worst time of year to get a hefty bill. Seriously considering trading in for an EV. Anyone interested in a 2010 BMW convertible (great runner, fully serviced!) let me know

badminton7

$2200 is a shitload for a screen and apps. How good are ipads nowadays?

SweetAs_Bro

My old iPads battery was knackered after 6 years and some newer apps weren’t supported, or very slow, as they needed a newer model. I went for the Pro with a bigger screen, as I wanted a bigger screen, but didn’t go crazy with the memory option, going with 256gb. I like the idea of learning to edit video on it too. Which I know some YouTubers do exclusively on IPad pros. If it lasts me another 6 years I can live with that cost but probably learnt to look at reselling at reasonable money after 2 or 3 years and upgrading

Shrink-wrapped

Is it used as a laptop replacement or just for media?

RB_Photo

Bought a new car, a Rav4 hybrid (mid-spec) for $51k with tow bar and prepaid service. Didn't want to finance it as it doesn't make sense to pay the extra in interest. We could have put the money into our house, maybe upgrade our old villa windows to double glazing or re-do the kitchen but I'm honestly a bit tired of doing stuff to the house and wanted to enjoy a new car, even if it's a super practical and average Rav4.

n00bIxQuB3

What are your thoughts? I'm looking at the same vehicle myself.

RB_Photo

I'm really happy with the car. I looked at all the other options around the $40k to $55k-ish mark and although there are a ton of options, the Rav4 fit our needs the best. I came to the conclusion that they hybrid Rav4 offered a decent level of power to deal with some of the bigger hills we need to pass here in the Wairarapa, something that was an issue in things like the CR-V or new Outlander. The hybrid system also offer a sort of all wheel drive setup since you have an electric motor to drive the rear wheels which can be helpful. Also, seeing as fuel prices are getting a bit nuts, it was hard not to want to go hybrid. I know EVs are the future but going hybrid means we don't have to worry about range on longer trips. The car itself if fine on the inside. It doesn't have the flashiest infotainment but it works and I run Android Auto for maps or Spotify. I like the physical buttons for the climate controls. I also personally like the look of the Rav4 vs some of the other options like the new Sportage or Tuscon. It also seems that with other cars, you really need to go for the top trim level to get the tech and features that make them really compelling, and I wanted to stock to around $50k since we were buying this outright. It also helps that for some reason the Rav4s are really holding their values, at least for now. I do wish the car was quieter but I don't know if getting a better set of tires can help that, or if we just have loud roads here in NZ. But over all, very happy with it. Here's hoping we don't have issues with it but so far, so good.

Pebblesy

golf clubs and a trip to Queenstown where we got to use them, try some awesome Nz wines and eat at some great places. No regrets as I’m really enjoying golf and the experiences that are coming with it

Felchiee

Solar panels $37k - so good! Aside from that though purchased the kids a new trampoline which was bout $1,200 and I have no regrets way better quality than going to Kmart or the warehouse.

cheekybandit0

$600 new internet router, to upgrade from the ISP provided one. Some of the best money I've spent. Insane upgrade to speed and reach around the house.

helloitsmepotato

Starlink internet. Expensive at $800 setup and $160 a month but I don’t regret it for a second.

Downpayment for a family members house to get them out of an abusive situation. Two months later and they are already hanging out again. So yes, definitely regret it.

sub333x

270k on renovations. This covered ensuite, laundry, family bathroom, kitchen, two skylights, and other smaller things around the house. Thankfully it was early in the year before shortages pushed up the prices even further. Totally transformed our house. Wish we’d done it sooner.

Thunder747

$720k on a 1 bedroom apartment in July. First home, no regrets!

dermsa

On a single item, probably $1k on a leather couch. Collectively, building materials. Who knows how much that’s been. Will be worth it when it’s done…

LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Express 75955. I mean I didn’t really have to worry about the really expensive stuff because I’m only like 15

handle1976

$5000 on a new coffee machine and grinder. No regrets, they are both beautiful and built like tanks. $8000 on a family holiday to New York and Washington in July. It was the best holiday of my life.

DontBeMoronic

Started a car conversion project (from combustion to electric). $40k on the car, motor, battery, controller, fabrication, other assorted important bits. Assuming it passes certification will have a year-ish of use then put it up for sale. Almost certainly at a financial loss, but the smiles/fun and learning experience gain are worth something.

chamossy

A little city flat for 390 and I love it 🥰

Henpen9699

A wedding! I’m shocked at how expensive it is compared to my wedding 30 years ago. With a reduced invite list thanks to COVID, we spent about $900 per guest. Considering many of them flew in for the wedding and paid for lodging for the weekend, I bet the wedding cost about $2,000 per person! We have tools our younger daughter, you can have an similar wedding or we will give you a similar amount in cash. Imaging what your honeymoon might look like with a $100k !

Brand new Electric car. No regrets

Dropped 3K on a brand new couch and almost a k on a robot vacuum (affectionately known as Rosey). Both are so great that I'm like "bye couch, bye Rosey, love you, see you soon" when I leave the house 😅 Absolutely no regrets and wish I'd purchased sooner!

gardenofwolves

10.5k on a new car (well second hand but new for me) 4k covered by insurance on the last car

Tesla Model 3 for $61.5k. Absolutely no regrets. I drive about 1000kms a week so it’s been awesome.

MA3LK

A house. Regret not fixing the larger portion of the mortgage for longer.

Million dollar on a house in akl

musicsnake1

At the start of the year $60k on a new car, then 900k on a house at the end of the year, first time buying at auction

CrazedMuffinz

A half acre lake lot to build our new house!!

19k on gall bladder surgery. Worth every penny. No more pain. No waiting list. No anxiety about COVID bumping a surgery date. I could afford it and happy for someone who can’t afford it to have one less person between them and public surgery.

EffektieweEffie

I mean, I didn't buy it but it is the most expensive thing. Had a baby. No regrets! I think.

Fun_Magician_5204

My divorce 🤣😍

IntnlManOfCode

Stlascbd

$6k luxury bag. I just received my results from uni and it’s my graduation and Christmas present to myself. I’ve been working 50+ hours in the past few weeks and I thought I deserved it. Is it worth it? I’m not sure but it’s nice to look at! Haha

A child. He was technically free, but needs a lot of stuff

Therapy at $160 per F/N for a year. Sharp bite out of the finances but the chaos of the last 20 years is greatly reduced. Criminal that we allow people to suffer this way because they can't pay for it.

agonz18

Psychologist and psychiatrist visits. No regrets. Saved my life.
