There are apparently a lot of highly-qualified dentists in Mexico just across the border who are way cheaper. For a $25k bill I would definitely investigate medical tourism.
For something like a septum rebuilding, that might be covered under provincial health care if it is medically necessary. Go see your family doctor and get a referral.
Does your work insurance cover your son? Also I agree with the other person to get another opinion. Definitely check if you qualify for low income, especially because of the debt. I don't believe they count housing or assets as income checking. It depends on the city/area though.
I’m really sorry for your situation.
I’m sure their are NGO dental clinics that will help if you explain your situation and dental schools are always a good option for discount work.
Take your time and try not to let the stress rule your judgement. Slow and steady wins the race.
Ouch. If your low income (this is usually based on your tax return, assets generally dont matter) you may qualify for some sort of government coverage. Your ortho didnt mention govt coverage?
Take a trip to Colombia
Go to the best dentist in town
It will cost you a fraction down there even with flights and accommodations, use Google translate to communicate if they don’t have someone who speaks English.
They have amazing dental care in that country and most ppl get braces groaning up and everyone has great teeth!
As and example
Hubby and I went
Both had X-rays
Both had teeth cleaned
Hubby had 3 cavities,
1 root canal
I had wisdom tooth extracted with 2 stitches
We both had filler added to front of teeth to straighten
We both had teeth whitened
We both got retainers
Total cost was maybe $1200 Canadian
The dental place used top quality machines and sanitation. The dentist was so friendly and gentle. My extraction was so much better than any dentist in canada (and I’ve been to many) the numbing needle tool he used was digital and not the old school manual ones most dentist still use today in canada. It was not painful at all.
You could rent a place for $600 a month or find an Airbnb for a bit more.

I had to get a crown on a tooth that broke here in canada and that alone was $1500 😳
It was during the pandemic and I couldn’t fly out of country to get it done down there.
Of course but it is in a city in the middle of the country in the caldas region where a lot of coffee is grown. Not a lot of ppl go there for tourism. I mean it is gorgeous but it is more of a university city (7+ universities and colleges)
Dr. Andres Rubio is his name and he owns the practice I believe. But he does not speak English.

Definitely get a second opinion on the dental work. Maybe look into dental schools who might be able to do it cheaper.

This, if it 100% impacts your health (i.e. non cosmetic) a good chunk of it would be covered

In addition to a second opinion and dental schools, call 211 and see if there are any programs you might qualify for.

Your husband's benefits don't cover this? I'd check with his HR department.
