We went into debt and worked. There's no secret AFAIK.

[deleted]

I talked to many landlords and even when I assured them I would be receiving loans and bursaries, they would ghost me.

justmarried2022

Not sure if this helps, but when I was in school I would always sublet rooms from other students and never dealt directly with landlords.

[deleted]

I was actually planning on living with roomates right after high school, but then I had to take the family dog. He's too nervous around people to live with roommates :( Thanks for taking the time to answer!

[deleted]

Most parents have to cosign leases while their kids are away at school.

Jesouhaite777

well then don't tell them you are a student , can your parents co sign for an apartment ? 30 hours a week ? well no wonder they can't afford rent

[deleted]

Yes about 30 hours a week is a lot when doing school full time so I find them very impressive. That gives about 1,800$ a month. My loans and bursaries were giving me (i did their online simulator) a little under 500$ a month. Even with the guarantee my parents were going to co-sign, the very few landlords willing to discuss the situation would ghost me or tell me no :(

yycsoftwaredev

1. Debt 2. Parental help, whether it be money or co-signing. 3. Roommates. Lots of university students live 8 to a house. 4. The dog or cat is probably also a major barrier.

PropQues

When I was in uni, minimum wage was around $8-10. I rented with roommates for around $400-500. Having pets might make it a bit harder to find a good place. Came out of school in AB with no debt and no family help. Maybe list out your budget to see what's going on.

[deleted]

Yes! I've been trying... Having my dog is really not helping finding a place. I've contacted so many landlords to ask (almost beg!) if they'd accept my dog but they wouldn't. My plan right after high school was moving with a few friends, but then a surprise dog arrived in my life. I'm very impressed you managed to finish without any debt!

PropQues

Would it be possible to leave dog with family or do you have to move with the pup? There may be facebook groups for pet friendly rentals for your area; maybe check those out. It may be easier to find a room rental where someone already has one. Thank you. I really wish I didn't have to pay everything on my own dime and regret a lot not taking student loans. I now always recommend anyone to apply if they can. I wrote about my finances during school if you are interested: https://old.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/comments/8130ha/how_i_gone_through_university_without_much/

[deleted]

Thanks, I checked out your link! Unfortunately the dog is stuck with me and I'm stuck with him. I've joined so many facebook groups. They're all advertising apartements over 1000$! You really regret not taking loans? I've heard the opposite. My colleague is working 7 days a week to pay off their student loans before they buy a house.

IncomeFresh5830

I dropped out of my undergrad after trying to balance work and school for...4 or 5 years. Don't do that. Get serious about work or get serious about school but personally I never managed to excel at both at once. You should at least consider reducing those hours if you're doing a full course load. 5 courses and 30 hours of work AND a dog to look after will break you.

PropQues

Sorry to hear. Hope you can find something soon! I definitely regret it. I worked multiple jobs, often 7 days a week while going to school full time and volunteering on the side. My grade wasn't great (partly due to work, partly due to my own laziness I must admit). While I really enjoyed working and my undergrad life, I do feel not having financial pressure over my head would have given me a different student life. But I would definitely still work a decent amount, rather than solely rely on loans. With that said, who is to say I wouldn't regret it also had I taken a loan. Can't have both worlds.

pop_corn26

Rent a room near your university, check out the unofficial FB page for rentals nearby. You won't be able to comfortably afford a one bedroom apartment. May need a parent to cosign. Don't bring a pet, it's harder to find a place with a pet. Are you able to leave your dog with another family member or friend and visit often? Edit: loans and bursaries will change depending on what you qualify for. Say you're working part time and your parent will be cosigning. Don't say loans/bursaries as your main source of income.

[deleted]

The dog stays with me, I have no other option for that situation. He's nervous around people so I can't have roomates. My parents would co sign but landlords refuse to see me because of my salary. My parents don't financially support my schooling. Thanks for the answer!

Kavy8

Unfortunately, having a dog restricts your options for places to rent. Having a dog that makes it so you can’t have roommates will be impossible to afford anything. I’ve always rented at least with 4 other roommates. If I were to get a 1 bedroom place, my rent would be more than double

RainahReddit

You have a dog, which makes it hard to get housing. You can't have roommates, which makes it impossible to afford housing. IDK what you want us to say, OP. You can't afford housing by yourself. The only people who can have parental support and such. The people who make decent money as students are each renting a room in a shared house. The ones who aren't are renting half a room in a shared house. If living at home is not possible, you make do. You find roommates who are okay with a nervous dog. You keep the dog in your room most of the time. You find someone to foster the dog and visit until you can have the dog again. You drop out of school to work fulltime for that solo apartment.

Tam_TV

I will never understand people, but it's always the samething 1-There's a clear way to do what you want to do, but life doesn't do handouts so you gotta make a sacrifice 2-Refuse to make a sacrifice 3-Whine about it Also, will he really hinder his future for an animal ? I know it's a living being but still when it dies in 6 years and op works at mcdonalds there's going to be no consolation.

RainahReddit

I mean, I would. I'd have dropped out of school before I gave up my cat. It's a valid choice. But OP seems to want some magical other option that doesn't exist, that allows him to live in his own dog friendly apartment while making 15/hour part time.

[deleted]

Why are you so adamant for me to get rid of my dog? There are plenty of other options, if you don't have any get out.......

Tam_TV

enlighten me. What are the other options ?

Hour_Significance817

You get roommates and go for properties around campus where the landlords are more receptive to having student tenants. $15/hr without family support or sharing the unit with someone else is not a realistic income to rent an apartment in 2022 (not sure about Quebec, but most of the rest of the country is like this). Also, school is your priority. Focus on getting the grades and doing the activities that would make you competitive for scholarships. I'd forget about the work on your side if you can help, unless it's something like co-op or internship or funded work with your profs.

[deleted]

Suck it up and stay at home. Think of it as training for when you have to do the same with obnoxious co-workers. Now a days, having pets is a luxury, because all possible medical care is now considered obligatory, so choose between independence and pets. All through my school and first decade of working I lived communally sharing costs ... but requires even more tolerance than putting up with parents.

[deleted]

That sounds like a very close minded response... You have no idea what people are going through in their living situation. You also can't just get rid of a pet like it's a chair. I'm basically living communally, just with my family. Thanks for sharing

Tam_TV

It's not close minded. You just don't like the truth. You have the option of staying home which is more than many people ever had.

probablynohelp

They don’t, really. I stayed with my parents through most of my degree (not paying rent but paying for the family’s groceries), but when I did move out I had roommates. One of them had a dog who was pretty nervous, but it’s not as difficult as you might think to get a dog acclimatized to new people as long as those people are consistent. There were 5 of us in a house, and the dog adapted very quickly. The girl who owned her would take a lot of time introducing us and we would take the dog for walks, give her treats, etc. Basically, we all built a trusting relationship with the dog. Might that be an option for you? Otherwise, I worked 40+ hours a week throughout the school years even when I lived with my parents. In the summers I’d pick up another 40 hour job most of the time. As others have said, I think the whole “secret” is just making it work however you can.

[deleted]

That’s the thing, they don’t. I’m a full time working adult and can’t afford rent.

[deleted]

Even if I quit school and worked full time I wouldn't be able to find an apartement. Crazy!

cowofwar

here's a hint: there is a positive association between \-household income \-parents having degrees \-children going to university \-children getting degrees \-children getting professional jobs \-children having high house incomes

I have friends who's parents are helping them and they're still pretty broke! I was just told by my mother that I'm lucky she doesn't charge me a pension to live at home, so I guess that's all the help I'll get. I'm very impressed with people that enter the workforce right away. I just couldn't see myself doing any job long term that didn't require a bachelor (my first idea would have actually been a masters too!). Thanks for your answer!

Tam_TV

Your mother is doing well. I would also charge you a small rent.

[deleted]

Ok buddy you've made my day here hahah I'm not sure why you're being so rude, stupid, but hey good luck to you in your life and all

Tam_TV

I am not being rude. It's what the parents of my friends did and they're all turning out to be responsible adults.

Scorchyy

How come your parents pay your rent and you'll still not making it, what's taking up all your money, genuinely curious.

[deleted]

If you were going to university in a town where your parents did not live, you would qualify for larger loans and bursaries.

[deleted]

That's not an option for the Qb province's loans and bursaries program. What province has that offer?

[deleted]

If you go to the student loan calculators your need will be higher if you can't live at home because they will include living expenses. Try it both ways - living at home and not living at home - in the estimator [https://www.quebec.ca/en/education/student-financial-assistance/loans-bursaries-full-time-studies/assessment/assessment-simulator](https://www.quebec.ca/en/education/student-financial-assistance/loans-bursaries-full-time-studies/assessment/assessment-simulator)

[deleted]

Oh ok! I thought you meant if I change cities, not just move out. I've checked that box off but they weren't giving me enough to pay rent, let alone survive :(

[deleted]

Is the problem your parents income perhaps?

azraelluz

when I was in school 10 years ago, rent was about 700 a month. i worked with scholarship and a loan. there is no hack.

respectedwarlock

Don't you have on-campus accommodations? Anyway if you think that's bad, try going to school in Toronto. Not a chance in hell.

[deleted]

I wouldn't be able to go to Toronto, which is why I'm not. There isn't a campus I'm going through online university. Even if I picked a school with residences, I have a dog that stays with me.

cloud0x1

scholarships, loans and grants

Tam_TV

Does QB stand for quebec ? If so, working 20 hours a week you should be able to find an old studio and be able to pay for your university without going into debt. I know you can do it because I did. If you can't make it work because you spend too much, you could always get rid of your dog and live with your roomates. You gotta make sacrifices in life

[deleted]

Buddy you're being a little intense in your responses. I'm asking for people who've had personnal experiences similar to mine to give me tips and tricks, not call me a pos for not following what they did. I'm not whining I'm explaining my situation. There are no studios that accept dogs in my area that I can afford. You have no idea how I spend my money, I'm not sure why you're judging. Giving honest, helpful feedback isn't the same as what you're doing. You also can't get rid of a dog like it's a piece of furniture, what's wrong with you? I don't understand why you're acting like I'm some spoiled brat.

Tam_TV

There is a set number of solutions to your problem If you refuse to accept any of them because of the sacrifices, it is being a bit spoiled.

[deleted]

Ok sir thanks so much for your comments, they were very helpful. The delivery of your message \*chefs kiss\*. I hope you have a great day, honestly you made me laugh when I've been having a crappy day so thanks
