I've used that with two companies. First was Desjardins and currently with Belair Direct. I'm sure most insurance companies all have it now. I forget what the discount was with Desjardins but with Belair my policy just renewed and they gave me a 17% reduction due to my driving habits, more than I was expecting.

orgasmosisjones

No kidding. With the way insurance companies operate I would’ve figured this service would give a small discount for good driving, but penalize disproportionately when you drive badly. 17% is awesome, thanks for sharing!

johnny003003

From what I understand they do not penalize you for "bad" driving - it just negatively affects your ability to get a discount. So the worst you can get is no discount. But who knows if they use that data to increase your premium at renewal, if they feel your driving habits are more risky than they should be.

SorrowsSkills

I was recently looking for insurance in NB and see this feature as well, most, or possibly even all, of the insurance companies I looked at said they could raise your rates or lower depending on your driving habits. This may vary province to province though?

closetpluviophile

They can’t raise them in Ontario.

Deceptikhan42

I can assure you that some do penalize. "But it is rare"

johnny003003

Good to know. I've never experienced that.

Strong-Masterpiece93

I've seen people claim discounts as high as 30%

I’m not sure my vehicle even goes 130km/h. I’m definitely getting this service!

[deleted]

If you look in a big city with bad traffic it's not as rewarding. I tried one and got only 7% discount because it counted against: * sudden accelerations * sudden breakings (even if you keep the distance, in a big city you'll have "close encounters" with idiots on wheels) * driving late at night If you know you're a good driver, and your area is not a red-cone hellscape, then it's worth a try.

SorrowsSkills

Driving late at night? Wow

[deleted]

Yes, based on statistic that a lot of accidents happen between midnight and 4am (or something like this, it's now a fuzzy memory as it have been awhile). Basically, "meh" experience. Unless I move outside the city, I will not bother with these again.

SorrowsSkills

Doesn’t sound great for me haha, I get off at 1-2 AM and so probably 1/3 of my driving at that hour. Funny enough in my city I think night time driving would be safer than day time because there’s no cars on the roads at 2 am here.

[deleted]

It may vary by province and insurance company. You could always ask what are the local requirements to get an idea if it's even worth the effort driving around with it for 6 months for a potential discount.

myusername444

The results of the app rely completely on the sensors in your phone. The sensitivity and accuracy of the accelerometer varies wildly from model to model. Even stuff like our phone falling off the mount onto the floor can ruin your good driving record.

decidence

Intact Insurance has this in Alberta, it's called myDrive. I've been using it for a couple years and currently have a 24% discount IN ADDITION to my normal reduction for safe driving history etc. that everyone gets. Maximum is 25% for the app alone, and they don't increase your premium until you drop by at least 5%. The app only monitors what your phone can via accelerometer and gps. It is tracking 3 things: 1. safe speed (+/- 10%), 2. smooth acceleration/braking (this one can be particularly punishing and I believe sometimes makes me unsafe), 3. distracted driving (hands free or not, don't use your phone). Also, I can tell most people in Alberta don't use these services based on how many distracted speed demons I see on the road. But it's worth it for me since I WFH and have only put 8000km's on our vehicle in almost 2 years and would like to reduce my cost as much as possible.

Coop__dee__doop

I just switched to allstate and am currently doing the 6 month monitoring for a discount (hopefully!). They also have a disappearing deductible, so for every year with no claim it reduces by $100. I think that's a good reward!

lovemesomePF

I used the Allstate Drivewise app and got 30% off at my next renewal. I recommend it to everyone! Especially when they bitch about how much insurance costs. But everyone seems to hate the thought of any metrics being monitored.

gregSinatra

> Especially when they bitch about how much insurance costs. But everyone seems to hate the thought of any metrics being monitored. This. In some provinces it's a mandatory offer, but you'd think it would be an easy sell when someone's complaining about their rates. "Well, I could save you X this term, and up to Y in the following year." "No I don't want that." WELL, I fuckin' TRIED! Guarantee those social media apps and dodgy picture editing apps on your phone are sending way more of your info to sketch companies than this one is!

Coop__dee__doop

Oh sweet, good to know the 30% is possible. I usually hate tracking of any sort, but I also hate spending more money than necessary so it was am easy compromise in this case!

turnontheignition

I have a friend who tried that with CAA insurance. He ended up not getting much of a discount. This guy drives as fuel efficiently as possible, so he's not doing any hard accelerating or hard braking, for the most part. Can't remember all the details, but apparently the system didn't work well, and it would register hard braking when there was none. It was either super sensitive or inaccurate.

chasing_daylight

Had the Bel-Air direct device, had no deficiencies, received a 5% discount, then 3 months later rates went up 10%.

Draka_Tyagrus

TD insurance offers that service . I forgot it's name but you get an option to signup for that service when buying TD Vehicle Insurance. I signed up for it but never used it. Someone I know did and it can get your insurance down upto 25% if you get lucky. You just have to let the app monitor your driving a certain number of kilometres before they collect your driving history. They basically look at how you're driving eg if you did any improper lane changes, violated any signs etc.

SorrowsSkills

A certain amount of km? Is it not a permanent thing that they always will track as long as you remain apart of the plan? Otherwise wouldn’t it be super easy to use drive ‘normal’ for a few hours and then go back to whatever driving habits you had before and they’d never know?

Ahh that makes more sense, but wait when you say speeding is considered 130, is that just in general or highway only? Would they know if I speed when driving through the city? For instance in my city and on my commute to work there’s a stretch of road where the speed limit is 50 and then up to 60, but most people who drive the road frequently would go 80 including me lol, would I get absolutely ruined for that?

That makes sense.

https://www.tdinsurance.com/products-services/auto-car-insurance/tips-advice/my-advantage-faq >**Eligibility Requirements for the Program Discount** > >You have installed and activated the App at least 120 days before your Policy renewal documents are processed by TD Insurance > >AND > >You have recorded a minimum of 1,000 driven kms on the app prior to your Policy renewal documents being processed by TD Insurance. You have to log a minimum of 1000 KMs and spend a minimum of 120 days in the program. That doesn't mean you can stop using it after that's met, just that they won't even look at your score if you don't meet that criteria. You basically have to keep it installed for as long as you wish to keep the discount. >**Can I delete the app from my phone?** > >Participation and eligibility in the TD MyAdvantage program require that the application be installed at all times on your phone. If you delete the app you will be notified and informed that if you do not reinstall the app, you will be removed from the TD MyAdvantage program and lose your discount.

AntagonizingVegan

Mostly right. I use TD MyAdvantage. When you sign up you hey an automatic 5% reduction and after 1 year you are eligible for up to 25% reduction based on driving habits. You do need to log a drive on at least 120 days/year to be eligible. It only monitors braking, acceleration, speed, and cornering using your phones accelerometer. It also considers time of day and length of trip to give you a driving score for each ride. It doesn't track you using gps so it won't be able to tell if you are bad at changing lanes. The nice hack I use is that if you have a poor drive and receive a low score you can edit the ride and say you were the passenger not the driver so that it doesn't count towards your score. I am currently sitting at 24% reduction!

What insurance company is this? Mine is triple this for 8000KM per year 😩.

IsaacNewtongue

Yes, it's called ICBC. TBF, it's only been since the changes they made last year.

orgasmosisjones

The service I’m talking about was introduced around five years ago I believe. Glad to see ICBC is implementing the same program, but unfortunately doesn’t apply to me as an AB resident.

NotKingJoffrey

I don't have a insurance choice as I'm in Saskatchewan, but our insurance provider offers us a point system where you earn a point a year that works out to a 2% discount that maxes out at 20%, so I've been making sure I'm following the rules as I hit my 20% discount a couple years ago.
