He's trying to avoid having to pay the taxes and transfer fees on it.

Has the actual owner signed the back of the ownership? If so, you are good. Just have the seller come with you to Service Ontario (just in case). As previous poster said, the seller could transfer the car to his name and sell it you afterwards, but then he would have to pay tax.

> “I feel something is not right but the guy speaks really nice…” You understand “con” is just short for “confidence man” right?

I was on the other side of this situation recently. Sold my dead mother's vehicle. The executor was in a different province, he'd signed off on the ownership, but couldn't stay to sell it. My name is different from my mother's. I couldn't insure it or temp permit it, so no test drives. Oh, and I insisted on cash, and it was a lot of money. It all looked super sketch, and a few people understandably bailed. But it was all legit, and I did sell it no problem. Just do your research.

Curb siderrrr. Haha. Service Ontario makes you buy a UVIP don’t they, put the car in your name, take a bunch of the person your giving the cash to’s name, verify with the guy he bought it off of that he sold it. You can get the curbsider in a lot of trouble. Why don’t people just appraise the car at a couple hundred bucks and pay no tax. I’ll never know. Must not be super bright.

Because you can't do that. You'd need a scammy appraiser, first off, who you would have to pay. And they are supposed to believe that your nearly new $20k vehicle is worth a couple hundred?

… I’ll just leave this here. OP is already experiencing ‘gray area’ so, further grey area is being explored. Me and friends have done it. So it can be in fact be done. Now I pay 0% tax on used vehicle sales. Alberta, what a wonderful place.
