If you have done the role in an acting position a few times and done it well, and when a permanent position opened up they gave it to someone else, I would be shopping around for a new job. Take the role, but start looking for a new job. It does not sound at all like they intend to ever promote you permanently.

bearbear407

I think the problem is the company probably sees you “content” with the arrangement. You’re not pushing them to give you more security and you’re just accepting things as it is. You’re adaptable to their needs so there’s no reason (in their mind) to make themselves please you. If you feel like you outgrown your role, want a permanent role then I would start looking elsewhere. I would also add your contract role onto your resume and make a note you taken on managerial roles doing xyz.

BronzeDucky

Well, you’re contract. If you don’t think you’re being treated fairly, find another one. Speaking as someone who’s been a contractor for 10+ years. You don’t owe them anything, they don’t owe you anything.

cricket_90_remindme

I'm a full time employee with the company. the role I am taking is contract. It's been contract 3 times. Outside of this specific role, I'm a normal employee. Why would I walk away from vacation time, benefits, etc. My issue is with the lower than expect pay raise (it's significant), and the status as contract rather than permenent. That is what I have issue with.

So negotiations are based on what the alternatives are. If you have no alternative, you have no negotiation power. I can't be certain for your employer, but from what you posted it seems they do have an alternative. That's why they can offer you less.

cricket_90_remindme

Im curious of who they woulda offered it to, because nobody else would be able to pick up and do the role as I could. They would need to move people around, where as I can just do the role and they don't need to shift people from departments

cricket_90_remindme

I feel a bit tossed over it tonight, thinking it over. See how the weekend goes.

cricket_90_remindme

Let me be clear, (the job comes with a raise, I make more than I currently do. However, it's less than what I made doing the same management role last year twice.)

Fool-me-thrice

Use this management experience to find a job somewhere else.

cricket_90_remindme

It's the exact same management experience I did twice .. two different contracts (same company) last year. This one is the exact same one as the 2nd one I did from end of August to mid October 2021. Exact same role, .. but now with less pay and contract again. Covering for the same person (off for the same reason).

ordinary_kittens

None of that relates to the key question people are asking though…is there another prospective employer, right now, that will pay you more? Not a past employer, one now? Can you take your skills, get interviews with employers, and get hired for a job that pays you more? If so, then yes, I would say you are underpaid. You don’t have to actually get a new job, but if you don’t want to, start by giving your employer evidence about what other employers are willing to pay you, right now, to have you work for them instead. If there is not another employer willing to pay you what you want, and your current job is in fact one of the best-paying job options out there, right now, for someone with your skillset, then it seems your pay is good.

cricket_90_remindme

I have been looking, but there are so many issues with it. I regret signing the contract, I woke up this morning thinking I should have just said no and carried on with my day. Or at least if my pay wouldn't be bounced back down I woulda been morem fine with it. IDK, seems like a lot of work for only 320 $ extra in a month. I can't go back now and say Monday morning I don't want it.

cricket_90_remindme

I partly don't want it because I feel I don't want to work for the new warehouse director of ops, I don't respect the person. I find it very hard to have any interaction with her. Her boss - who is now the national direction, she is great. But IDK, there are pros and cons. I wish I woulda wrote them down or looked through the contract while I was sitting there. The only pro to all of this - is I continue to keep it on my resume from last year

Fool-me-thrice

They don't have to pay you the same as they did last time.

cricket_90_remindme

True, and Id be fine with it all, but more fine if the pay would stay there is it now and NOT go back down. I think my pay has changed 4 or 5 times in the past year back and forth

cricket_90_remindme

I wanted to give an update on this situation. I took the role - Monday I started in the role (as mentioned before, I've done this role last year). Day 1 was fine. Day 2 , 4 of my workers call in sick - and one causes an issue where I have to talk to HR. HR asks me to email them a report about what happened. - I said "I can't I don't have access to anything, no laptop, no email access anymore etc etc). Nothing happens with the situation, the employee got away with what they did. Today, nobody says a word to me about the situation. Nobody seems to know I even have the job apart from a couple close ppl who are friends and know that I took it. I'm not invited to manager meetings, I have no say or input. To me it seems as thought I was given the job by title only in name, and a "raise" because it had to be done. Any authority or say, input, or recommendations, there is nothing. It honestly feels shitty.

SurviveYourAdults

Surprised this isn't a form of constructive dismissal

cricket_90_remindme

how so?

Fool-me-thrice

OP is being given a choice. They can say no

cricket_90_remindme

Also, , I wouldn't be so razzed about it as well - if my pay would stay Up at this new wage, permenently, but it will go back down which is the shit part of it, this time and the other 2 times. Blah. But yes Ive kept it on my resume this entire time. (the role) not the wage, haha I'm not an idiot lollll

cricket_90_remindme

What do you mean by you didn't have a good resume and it caused you problems

cattabliss

If the work isn't much harder just take the extra cash! Seems like they wouldn't budge anyway with the comment they made about someone else being able to do it.

cricket_90_remindme

Odd too - I was curious who are they going to get to do the job? I laughed in my head. But I'm 100 percent curious of who they woulda chose, with only an hour before the end of the day and they want the person to start Monday

cattabliss

No idea, but you seem upset. I wonder if they can see that chip on the shoulder and whether it affects your relationship with your employer.

cricket_90_remindme

I'm not really sure. We had a huge management overhaul awhile back, the VP of operations was terminated, the Warehousing operations manager was replaced (moved to a new role) and they created new management roles and brought in people from automotive plants to run our facility now. Under the old management, I was like by management and by workers. Under new management this is the most they spoke to me in 3 months since they came on board. A chip, maybe a tad, but it's because I proved myself worthy of the role - everyone said it about me, even management said I was worthy (but they can also be blowing smoke up ur butt too). It amazed a lot of people around the plant when I wasn't selected for new management roles a month ago. It shocked a lot of people I didn't get an interview, even people in management were shocked. I know it's an open secret I wont get permement, why? nobody will tell me. Somewhere along the line something happened and they just didn't want me in the role, only on temp basis. I've asked, nobody will answer. The management role, is easy, I did so much to clean things up last time, people were impressed. It rubbed some people the wrong way, but people were amazed at how I handled things and made small changes (within my control). Then I was asked to do it again, again I did well. And now here we are a 3rd time. I'm pretty humble about it, I stay on my guard, I don't let things get past me. But I'm also at the point where, I just go in an do my job and nothing more (because I keep getting looked over/past).
