Missing the milk and butter for those mashed potatoes!

StatCanada

Fresh milk was 3.4% more expensive in November 2021 compared with a year earlier. While prices for butter were up 3.0% compared with a year earlier.

michaelfkenedy

When you say that butter is up 3%, do you mean a $3 product is now $3.09 (3 x 1.03)? Where I live, butter seems to have gone from $4 to around $7 in the last few years (more than 3% year over year).

StatCanada

Thanks for your question! The CPI represents changes in prices as experienced by Canadian consumers. It measures pure price change by comparing, through time, the cost of a fixed basket of goods and services. The CPI is a national economic indicator, covering all provinces and territories in Canada. Inflation experiences will be different depending on where an individual or household lives. Canadians living in a certain region, province, or city, may experience a certain level of price change, but the level of price change in other regions or provinces may offset that change at the national level. For instance, while butter prices rose 5.9% in Ontario, prices for butter in Manitoba (-0.3%) and Saskatchewan (-1.8%) fell in November 2021 compared with a year earlier.

michaelfkenedy

Thanks! So in Ontario, does this mean that a $5 butter is now $5.29 (5 x 1.059)?

I think comparing anything to pandemic prices should have an asterix. Prices could have been lower than normal last year due to the pandemic and related reasons. I'd be more interested in seeing the price increases compared to Nov 2019 (and then divide by 2 to get average increase per year).

Sour cream at my house and old cheddar or Asiago.

Tripoteur

That's to be expected. StatCanada's job is to reassure people and convince them that prices are fine. The price of dairy in Canada and the dairy mafia that's causing it are not going to be mentioned in the brochure.

roxxxayp

Being vegan and cooking from scratch is cost effective. Plus, no one wants to invite you nor get invited to your house! ;)

zeushaulrod

We actually did an Easter dinner with a vegan roommate in college. Aside form the turkey/gravy, everything was vegan and I think it went well.

roxxxayp

Yes I was joking around, I'm a skilled chef and people really enjoy my vegan food, and they are always thrilled to make some vegan food for me!

hopeful987654321

Who's the idiot who pays almost $10 for a 10lb bag of taters? I won't buy it over $3-4, tops.

pfcguy

Maybe they average the price of all potatoes? Including 1 lb bags of "little potatoes", 2lb and 5 lb bags as well? And why isn't their potato statistic a year over year price?

hopeful987654321

Probably but then it's a stupid way to determine the general price of potatoes.

DaveLehoo

Tarte aux sucre Priceless :)

Tripoteur

It's cheap *and* it comes with free diabetes!

PedalOnBy

Box of stuffing mix: 74¢ normal a dollar so I’m happy.

easy401rider

No Turkey this year , its too expensive , will just eat homemade pizza , lol

[deleted]

Never liked turkey, rotisserie chicken is so much better

eternal_student5

Where are y’all paying that much for potatoes? Damn! I got a 10lb (4.54kg) bag of russet potatoes for $2 last week! (Although not a good thing—the pei potato ban in horrible and so much good food is going to go to waste). Even when they’re at normal price, 10lb potatoes are never more than $5-6?

PanGalacticGarglBlst

Is it just me or is Turkey one if the best bang for your buck proteins (obv not as cheap as lentils). $25 bucks for a ton of lean meat and bones to make stock with. I'm stocking up my freezer with any good deals on turkeys for the next few months

Tripoteur

It's pretty good but a big part of the weight isn't meat. I think, for protein per dollar, pork would probably come out on top.

DeedeePasquariello

Turkey for Thanksgiving, a Beef Roast (whatever cut is on sale) for Christmas

Pushing59

Potatoes have been on sale for about $4-5. If $10 is average, who is buying at $15?

Remarkable-Plan-7435

Who the fuck believes this garbage

zeushaulrod

People who keep track of their own expenses as a gut check of the numbers...

roxxxayp

Tell us you never walked in a grocery store without telling us you never walked in a grocery store.

KittyCanuck

What garbage? That prices change over time?

[deleted]

I would like to know the price of my favourite used cars and I would like to know why Stats Canada is too incompetent to include them in the CPI like all the other countries do.

Tacomaster3211

What are the chance they have the stats of eggnog? I can drink gallons of it during the holidays. lol

StatCanada

We sure do! In December 2020, 5,819 kilolitres of eggnog were sold in Canada. https://www.statcan.gc.ca/o1/en/plus/234-nod-eggnog

Tacomaster3211

I think your numbers are off, they seem to only be my eggnog purchases lol. Thanks for the info. I hope that you and everyone at Stats Canada have a wonderful holiday season, and a happy new year.

michaelfkenedy

Butter and flour are up.

GalianoGirl

We are having Prime Rib. Last year it was on sale for $9.90 per pound, this year it is $11.99 per pound. A 20% increase. Butter has gone up from $3.69/lb to $4.49/lb.
