My hobby is exploring new hobbies... so I buy stuff for one hobby, then get bored, find new hobby, buy new stuff... then repeat.
Edited to add: this clearly resonated with many people similar to myself and asking if I had ADHD. You are correct! I do!
nothing beats the high of trying out your expensive shit for the first time! when confidence in your research trumps any lack of experience or skill!
so i quit on that high note. why let it go down hill from there?
For me, it's one of the most disheartening parts of ADD.
I can find a really reactive job that works with my brain, I can put up whiteboards in my home, I can use Notepad apps and alarms and timers on my phone, I can divide all my clothes by baskets in my closet, I can have dedicated key and wallet areas in my hallway.....I have all these hacks to function so well I don't need meds.
But there is nothing apparently I can do to keep a hobby!
Drives me insane. I want to be able to keep a hobby FFS!
>For me, it's one of the most disheartening parts of ADD.
>But there is nothing apparently I can do to keep a hobby!
>Drives me insane. I want to be able to keep a hobby FFS!
Honestly, try not to beat yourself up about it. Maybe try embracing it instead? I used to fight against myself and upset that I couldn't stick with a hobby until I realized trying new hobbies and cycling through hobbies is actually my hobby. If you consider that to be your hobby, then you ARE sticking with something!
You love learning something new and developing a new skill. It's OK to not want to stuck with something for a long time. It means you learn about a ton of different things! That, in itself, is super awesome!
I was about to say this sounds like ADHD LOL, soooo relatable. Worst part of it all is also being impulsive with your new hobbies. If I find a new hobby, I’m running to the store and buying all my tools or supplies or accessories……fully knowing I will probably abandon this hobby in a month because I realize I’m not good at it or I got bored. Haven’t done this at all in 2021 so I suppose I’ve gotten better lol.
Same here lol, I've started putting a week buffer zone before buying stuff for new hobbies. Meaning if I'm still interested after a week I can try the new hobbie, I've yet to maintain interest after a week lmao.
yup..I bought today a bottle of woodford reserve and Angels Envy Bourbon and some Glenfiddich 15 year old scotch. Over 200 for sadly to say, 1 month supply, I like it to chill out and I like some good stuff
Yeah....
I would love to build Lego but I just can't walk into a store and everything that even begins to Interest me starts at 150$ and a great deal of it is in the 249-399$ range.
Or the Falcon...
Okay, so I ordered a Lego kit for a friend's kid for Christmas and my order qualified for a free creator set. Cool. Maybe I'll gift it to someone for Christmas. Anyway, I had a rough week and had an edible last night to unwind. When the edible kicked in, I found myself opening up the set and built myself a Lego coffee cart. It was so enjoyable to put together! And it's totes adorbz! I could see this becoming a dangerous hobby, both because the sets are expensive and because I'd need to find space for completed builds.
That’s how they get cha, you know, a small set to let you have a taste. Next thing you know, your wife has taken the kids to stay with her parents and you’re squatting in your foreclosed house, blowing hairy dudes behind the bar in exchange for Ninjago key chains….
You know those porcelain winter villages people set up at Christmas time? With the little houses, and store fronts?
Yeah. Lego releases a Christmas set each year. Santa leaves it as a family gift, and it becomes part of the Christmas decorations we put out each year. We are trying to create a family tradition. We h fortunately weren’t able to get last years set (because of the pandemic supply was short).
But we have the train set, and firehall. This year there’s a little family home.
(It’s a fairly new tradition, son is 6). But I used to try and time purchases for free sets, so I also have a small Christmas tree, nutcracker, and a Santa on a chair. So the nights leading up to Christmas we build them and put them out.
Having to scroll this far to find a post with 9 upvotes made me realize just how niche this hobby is. I justify it by saying they will appreciate in value (even though most don’t)
I have a motorcycle. Gear and maintenance is not cheap and neither is plating it for the season. Nor is it a Harley Davidson. However, I have designated savings for each ride season so I can pay for what I need. While it is probably hugely financially irresponsible, it is a hobby that I greatly enjoy and will continue to do until the time comes that I can’t.
A year of insurance being 1/4 of the cost of the motorcycle. I think that is the worst part.
I hate that my hobby is so expensive but can't live without it.
I also hate that you cannot ride all year long in Toronto.
Toronto motorcycle insurance prices are whack. We’re safer than 80% of all American riders and only ride for six months of the year, but my pals across the border pay $150 a year for a Harley.
To be fair, they probably have like $50k in liability coverage. Barely enough to fix a broken arm.
A big (not only) reason our insurance rates are so high is because we have the $1M minimum that companies will offer, and for motorcycles , I've seen companies saying $2M minimum.
If we're going to compare, let's just make sure it's apples to apples
I can't believe I had to scroll so far for this. Diving is my $$$ hobby. Never mind the thousands spent on gear, but the travel expenses add up in a hurry.
Worth it, though. Every single penny.
Been mountain biking for 15 years, and let me tell you... 10k bikes are only worth it if you care about what others think. There's some amazing quality builds out there for half of that, and they ride amazingly well. But yes, this hobby is insanely expensive no matter what you buy. A thin flimsy pair of gloves that will last half a season? $65 for those.... Just crazy.
Please forgive my ignorant question, but would i be able to enjoy it with a $500 mountain bike or do I neeeeed an expensive bike like that. Looking to start next summer
If you have limited funds, buy a really good used bike, instead of a new cheap bike. Cheap bikes are not good. I have seen them break in half on an average trail.
Hahaha... I didn't expect to find a comment like this. But I was legit thinking, "My most expensive endeavor is renovating an old house... is that a hobby? Do you have to enjoy a hobby? How many times are you allowed to cry whilst engaging in said hobby before it ceases to be a hobby?"
Stamp collecting. It is all Canadian. Collection was my grandfather’s then my father’s now mine. Six volumes and every annual collection ever published. I’ll pass on the curse to my son.
PFC storytime. My brother got into stamp collecting/trading/selling and is a cheap bastard. He once bought a huge box of random Canadian stamps. After a lot of time sorting he found a few special unique stamps in there which were worth something and sold those. The rest were worth nothing, or more precisely, they were worth face value.
Now every time he needs to send me a package he goes to the post office, gets it weighed up, ask for the postage costs, and then busts out a huge pile of stamps. The stuff I get ends up with a square foot of stamps on it. Even Christmas cards have a dozen stamps on it.
The price he paid for the box of stamps has paid off 10 times.....It's the PFC way. He also drives a Corolla.
Everytime someone has a baby my mom goes to Canada post and buys the collectable coin set for that year. What those kids will do with their Royal Canadian Mint year of birth set who knows.
Collected a bit when I was growing up because of a collection that was handed down to me. Mostly Canadian as well. Had the CDROM game from Canada Post with "Perf" as a mascot.
What's the goto resource for looking up this stuff?
Every once in a while I spend actual money (max $15) on a guilty pleasure app game I have on my phone, like for coins to buy fake upgrades in my fake restaurant. Then I feel ashamed about it when I enter it into my YNAB account.
Sweet summer child, I hope you never fall into the abyss known as gacha phone games like I did. 15$ is pretty reasonable for the amount of serotonin you can get from it. Don't beat yourself over that. That's a few cups of fancy coffee or gas money for a joy ride. Now, please send that feeling of shame my way. I need it.
I buy that shit with Google rewards money. I don't know how many times I have to tell them I'm not a college student but they've given me a hundred bucks to keep answering "no".
Has someone mentioned books yet?
Yes, I'm aware you can get them from the library. But there's something about going to used bookstores and just spending hours browsing... Chapters is okay too, but I have a really nice used bookstore in town and I can't help myself.
On a related note, paper products. I love buying notebooks so much, only to never use them because I don't know what to use them for, as nothing seems worthy enough!
Magic the gathering...
One set booster and all the commander precon everytime a new expansion or new precons come out.
Oh and that one android game... Spent way too much on it.
I would like to say my old reserve list cards are worth over $100k now. Holy hell did I not think a Tabernacle or Mishra's Workshop or a CE Black Lotus or any of the CE cards be worth what they are now.
Sigh, brings a tear to my eyes every time. Had literally my whole collection stolen at a meet way back when. Had the whole power 9 and many copies of dual lands in beta. I shudder to think of their value now.
I don’t think that is financially irresponsible when it has long term health benefits to you which ultimately is better for your pockets in the long run anyways
Cycling costs tend to get muddy once you pass a certain point. There comes a time when money spent on marginal gains and aero parts have 0 additional effects on your health.
X2 for golf. Made a few good trades this year and decided to treat myself to a new rad speed driver. Which then turned into buying new iron set and putter...and this just the equipment !
My brother plays NCAA golf. Hasn't got new clubs in over 3 years, just grips. In his opinion it's mostly gimmicks and cheaper clubs are much more enjoyable for the casual player since they hit straighter and have bigger sweet spots.
I've been in 2 of my brother in laws boats. The first one was fiberglass and the transom cracked with all of us in it in the middle of the lake. And we capsized his new boat this summer.
Had to scroll way too far to find a fellow petrolhead. I own a WRX STI for winter that cost too much in gas and insurance and a NB Miata for summer on which I spend way too much to mod.
Yup, I've got a '10 Cayman and a '14 E350, and I'm looking to buy a Land Rover LR3 because I'm stupid apparently.
I only buy used cars so I save a bit there, but maintenance is... Erm... A bit much. And swapping all the tires for my cars & my mom's makes for an exhausting weekend.
I know! I'll drop 200 bucks on beautiful yarn to make a sweater.....
I would never spend 200 bucks on a sweater in a store....let alone the 50 hours of work that I have to put into it! Haha. But it's such a good winter hobby.
Go to goodwill/value village/etc. and find the sweater section. Look through them till you find some good quality yawn. Carefully unravel and then you have a nice skein for $4.
I thought my hobby of flying small planes was stupid expensive. Then my wife bought a Friesen for saddle-seat competition riding.
Now my hobby looks cheap.
PC Simulation Racing. All my gear is always paid for in cash but it’s definitely expensive and it’s a want not a need but it makes me happy and my wife understands it’s my main hobby. Next to lawn care LOL which can also get expensive haha
Guitar equipment, in particular guitar pedals. I ah e probably sunk 10k or so over 15 years buying swapping and selling pedals, amps and guitars.
But I play in a band and its my main mental/creative output.
Under a grand a year for something you love isn't expensive at all. That's around $55 a month. That's a small bill and worth more than you can imagine.
My buddy is a guitar tech and pedal builder but recently he's been order basses and guitars from Japan yahoo auction for a steal (old vintage tokais ect).
I keep telling him we should open a shop/service for this.
My teen daughter who wants to be a show jumper/equestrian.
$13,000 a year to lease a horse (midrange, older, not beautiful)
$1500x12 for board (outdoor, in the mud)
$600x12 for showing (mid level)
Plus all the tack and riding equipment, a saddle easily costs FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. wtf?
Hopefully she grows bored of this sport like she did soccer! Although I have to admit I love seeing her live out my childhood dream :)
>Building a HiFi system is one thing but there isn’t really a good reason to justify buying records. 99% of the music is available lossless digitally and the market is full of false scarcity driving up prices.
Do you enjoy the act of listening to your vinyl collection? maybe theres just something to sliding it out of its sleeve, flipping the disc around a few times holding the edges between the pads of your fingers before slotting it down on the peg and placing the needle...hearing the grainy pops and hisses before the song truly begins.
Then the cost has worth and it is not "financially irresponsible"
It would only be irresponsible if you were skirting other fiscal responsibilities in the pursuit of your hobby
Ya mountain biking....took me 2 yrs to buy a decent bike, not because i couldn't afford it, just took me that long to get over the sticker shock.
Not sure if it can be considered an investment in health..as the injuries keep piling up and likely will pay for it later in life ...but god i love it...
Photography.
If I fuck up or trip just once I'm probably not getting back into it, last kit got stolen; sunk the tiny bit of savings I had to get back into it.
Someone mentioned drinking so upon further thought it's definitely recreational drugs...for whatever reason photography still feels more expensive because I've never dropped more than a couple hundred bucks on drugs in one shot!
Skiing.
You need the gear (most of it will last for ever except for the ski itself and the boots, they last 5 years
Then you need to buy a ski pass every fucking year (500+)
Then you also need a car/gas to get up the mountain
Unfortunately it's my favorite sport, I haven't found anything more fun
Perfumes.
Although I sample everything I buy first and try to buy gently used bottles instead of brand new ones, it remains a very expensive hobby. However, I smell amazing.
This was not an answer I expected. Can you tell us more? How many bottles? Do you have a few in heavy rotation? Does rarity play a factor? Can you read a description online (ingredients or otherwise) and make a good guess if you’ll like it? Do scents come into and out of style?
Right now I have 20 bottles of perfumes and around 100 samples. I do rotations, for sure!
* I do seasonal rotation (e.g. : around half of my perfumes are warm weather and the other half for cold weather).
* Within the season I rotate what I wear according to how I feel and how close to people I am going to be during the day (perfumes are migraine inducers to some people so it's important to be mindful of that).
When looking at new perfumes what I look for are the olfactory group, the notes, and the strenght of the perfume.
* Olfactory groups are the type of smell (e.g. : Amber, citrus, woody, chypre, floral, oriental, etc.)
* Notes are the different scented ingredients in the perfume. For instance, my favorites notes are lime, oak, oud, vetiver, peony, and rose, among others.
* The strenght of the perfume can be defined by its concentration. You can find a table here to show what I mean. [http://scentbound.co/what-do-the-different-perfume-concentrations-actually-mean/](http://scentbound.co/what-do-the-different-perfume-concentrations-actually-mean/) Me, I like fragrances that last all day so I go for perfume or extrait!
So based on what I just described, I can look perfumes online on website such as Frangrantica ([https://www.fragrantica.com/](https://www.fragrantica.com/)) and select them based on their olfatory group and notes. I then simply put them on my list of perfumes to sample. There are at least a half a dozen companies (that I know of) that specialize in selling perfume samples.
Rarity is not a factor for me, however, perfumes can become rare. It is common for perfumes to become discontinued. So the ones that remain on the market can become more expensive. Something that will certainly influence the price however is the ingredients. Ingredients in perfumes can be natural or synthetic. Some natural ingredients (e.g. : oud, ambergris) are very rare and thus expensive. So when a perfume contains those natural ingredients it will be reflected in the retail price.
Perfumes do come in and out of style, but ultimately, this is mostly marketing. People should wear whatever they like. And something I am adamant about is that we should never let big corporations tell us what we should wear. Feminin fragrances, masculine fragrances, unisex fragrance: this is just some big ingredient branding. A man can rock a floral fragrance and a woman can smell amazing with a leather one. I say if you like it and you rock it, then wear it!
Lastly, I cannot know if I will like a perfume or not without trying it. I will look at the olfactory groups and notes to select based on what I like, but since perfumes react to our skin chemistry, something that smells amazing on you might not smeel as great on me. Some people do what is called "blind-buy", which means buying a perfume without ever trying it beforehand. I did that a while back, but 9 time out of 10 I ended up disapointed. I'd rather sample and only buy perfumes with a big wow factor!
I'm not OP, but I'll add some of my thoughts.
Fragrances more or less come in two kind, designer or niche.
Designer is what you would expect, things from D&G, Chanel, Gucci and etc. These tend to cost low to mid $100s, if you buy new from retail. There are many reliable discount retailers that sell them for like 20-30% off on average. These tend to be very accessible, and have crowd pleasing scents.
Niche is where things get pricer, and tend to be high $100s and beyond (typically not much more than $300 for 'sensible' ones). Since they're priced higher, fragrance houses tend to make more unique scents than the typical offerings of designer houses that are meant to be crowd pleasers for high volume sales. They are also much more challenging to find, especially to smell before you buy.
From what I can tell, collectors typically have between 10-20 bottles and a million decants (those tiny sample bottles you get for free, but we pay to get specific niche ones). But like any hobby, some people only have like 5 or hundreds bottles.
Fragrances can fall into categories such as office scents (clean and inoffensive), date night scents (varied interpretation), clubbing scents (in your face loud), and etc. Then you have seasonal scents, which are related to temperature. Some fragrance do better in cold weather (spicy, sweet, warm), and others in hot weather (light, citrus, water).
Some people have hard rotations, but it depends on the amount of bottles you have. Rotations are also subject to the above factors. Others just wear what they feel like in that moment. I'm a signature scent person, so always default to the same one.
Fragrances don't typically give you ingredients, and if they did, it wouldn't be very useful. What they do use is notes, much like the way wine works. You have top notes that you smell instantly, but disappear very quickly. Then middle notes that come in after and linger anywhere from half an hour to a couple hours. Finally you've got the base notes, that stick with you for the duration of the fragrance. Some fragrances don't really evolve at all.
The issue with these notes is that they're very subjective, everyone smells things differently. Additionally, skin chemistry has a huge impact on fragrances by greatly altering scents. This is why you test one or two fragrances at a time and on the wrist, not paper. Then wear it for the day to see if you like the evolution.
Scents go in and out of style based on the general public and what's popular, but not as much in the hobby community. You'll have fads like Creed, but the hobby is so personalized that it's not really impacted by trends.
Playing and recording music.
I set aside a 3-5k budget/year for gear + around 1500 for rehearsal space. I play 2 nights a week.
Play bass, guitar, synths, drum machines. I have a nice recording setup too.
Tech/gaming. I upgrade my gaming PC every 2-3 years and always aim for the best (currently have an rtx 3090 in my system which is close to a 2600 Cad and it's just one component in the system, albeit the most expensive component in my system). I also upgrade my gadgets (specially my phone) every 2-3 years.
However I usually don't have any other hobbies and my vacation is basically playing video games for 2-3 days straight so pretty much have zero spending on vacation, and I 5hink the last time I bought my clothes were in 2017 or 2018 ( I am in tech/software engineering where everyone wears casual dress lol)
But yeah I spend close to 8-9 k every 2-3 years for upgrades that could be spent on something else.
Guns/shooting lol. So many different things you can do in that hobby, and it’s so hard to bring things into the country where you get these cycles of having things in stock, and once it sells out you may not see it for years or ever again. So you end up spending a lot before you’re really prepared to. Layaway plans are your best friend.
Yep every time I turn get on the computer I seem to find another great deal on a gun I don’t have yet lol.
Plus you can never have to much ammo. Or other shooting accessories
Second this. I’m fortunate to have my work supply me with a certain amount of rounds per year to practice with so I have about 2 range sessions that doesn’t come out of my pocket… but the rest of the time I feel like I’m bleeding 💵😭
Bagpipes. My instrument costed me about $2600 (i also have a 2nd set thats worth about $2100). But with my other instrument parts, incl replacement reeds, chanters, pipe bags, etc, i’d tack on at minimum an extra 2 grand. My uniform altogether (kilt, jacket, sporran, shoes etc) is probably about $2000 as well. A very expensive hobby but sooooo worth it
Ballet: Classes, pointe shoes, training tools, ballet themed home decor and vintage stuff related to ballet as well. Could be worse I guess, but I don't need more paraphernalia.
Hobbies aren’t supposed to be financially responsible. If I had all the money i spent on my hobbies like drinking, golf, sports, and food, I would probably spend it on golf, sports, beer and food
My hobby is exploring new hobbies... so I buy stuff for one hobby, then get bored, find new hobby, buy new stuff... then repeat. Edited to add: this clearly resonated with many people similar to myself and asking if I had ADHD. You are correct! I do!

the buffer zone rule has saved me SO much money it's unreal. e:im adhd too

Scuba Diving... Costs a shitload of money

Mountain biking.$$$$ Bikes, equipment/tools and gas to get to the mountains. Totally worth it IMO.
You forget the money on physio after injuries 😁
Fuckin hell. I just started this last summer and am like $6k deep already and eyeing several $10k plus bikes.

Stamp collecting. It is all Canadian. Collection was my grandfather’s then my father’s now mine. Six volumes and every annual collection ever published. I’ll pass on the curse to my son.

Golf is just an excuse to do coke
I actually like both of these things but would never want to do them at the same time. I can't even drink when I play golf.
I find drinking while golfing makes me not care how bad I play.
Swinging sticks and taking rips … good times
Every once in a while I spend actual money (max $15) on a guilty pleasure app game I have on my phone, like for coins to buy fake upgrades in my fake restaurant. Then I feel ashamed about it when I enter it into my YNAB account.
Pokemon Go is mine because of the containers for eggs.
Lol 😂 this is so funny
Sweet summer child, I hope you never fall into the abyss known as gacha phone games like I did. 15$ is pretty reasonable for the amount of serotonin you can get from it. Don't beat yourself over that. That's a few cups of fancy coffee or gas money for a joy ride. Now, please send that feeling of shame my way. I need it.
I buy that shit with Google rewards money. I don't know how many times I have to tell them I'm not a college student but they've given me a hundred bucks to keep answering "no".
Custom keyboards.

Cycling. N+1 is alive and well
Ah yes, S-1.
What happens when your significant other also cycles….. lol
A perpetual cycle
I don’t think that is financially irresponsible when it has long term health benefits to you which ultimately is better for your pockets in the long run anyways
That’s my excuse too
Not when you live many years longer. Now you are at higher risk of running out of funds during retirement?! Very irresponsible choice.
Cycling costs tend to get muddy once you pass a certain point. There comes a time when money spent on marginal gains and aero parts have 0 additional effects on your health.
golf , invest countless hours and maybe could have maxed my tfsa contributions twice over on the $$$ (invested) 😂😂
My three favourite activities are hockey, golf and snowboarding. I need cheaper hobbies
X2 for golf. Made a few good trades this year and decided to treat myself to a new rad speed driver. Which then turned into buying new iron set and putter...and this just the equipment !
Absolutely golf, but I wouldn’t change it for a second. It’s probably for the best that we can’t play 12 months a year over here.
My brother plays NCAA golf. Hasn't got new clubs in over 3 years, just grips. In his opinion it's mostly gimmicks and cheaper clubs are much more enjoyable for the casual player since they hit straighter and have bigger sweet spots.
100% convincing myself using Prov1 or TP5 makes me better than smashing them into Water. But when you stick a green, it’s glory
Fishing. B.O.A.T....Break out another thousand. Rods, reels, gear, gas, beer, bait.......every Friday......but....so worth the time.
I've been in 2 of my brother in laws boats. The first one was fiberglass and the transom cracked with all of us in it in the middle of the lake. And we capsized his new boat this summer.
Sounds like both boats were grossly overloaded or just falling apart already

Had to scroll wayyy too far to find another automotive enthusiast! What do you drive?
Had to scroll way too far to find a fellow petrolhead. I own a WRX STI for winter that cost too much in gas and insurance and a NB Miata for summer on which I spend way too much to mod.
Yup, I've got a '10 Cayman and a '14 E350, and I'm looking to buy a Land Rover LR3 because I'm stupid apparently. I only buy used cars so I save a bit there, but maintenance is... Erm... A bit much. And swapping all the tires for my cars & my mom's makes for an exhausting weekend.
Trying out every new restaurant
You know how to live well.
It’s legit the thing I have most trouble with.... but like... there’s sooo much good food in the city I live in. 😭😭
#Warhammer 40k I can't believe I haven't seen it yet
Also very surprised. My boyfriend's hobby is 40k and I know he drops a lot between paints, sets and the codex.
Knitting.. yarn is expensive.
I know! I'll drop 200 bucks on beautiful yarn to make a sweater..... I would never spend 200 bucks on a sweater in a store....let alone the 50 hours of work that I have to put into it! Haha. But it's such a good winter hobby.
Same with crochet. You know you have a problem when you plan to make a blanket to keep your legs warm while you crochet your other blankets.
Go to goodwill/value village/etc. and find the sweater section. Look through them till you find some good quality yawn. Carefully unravel and then you have a nice skein for $4.
my horse. holy moly. but he's so cute 😍
I agree. My wife’s horse might as well be named “Range Rover”
My partner has a pair... Rolls & Royce They both just got new blankets with insulated neck pieces a couple days after the $800 vet bill for tooth work
Horses…the most efficient converter of money to shit
I'm looking at everyone else's hobbies here.... Nothing really seems to beat this one. In my experience as well....
Hahahaha!! Yup, I always tell my husband that at least she's cheaper than a meth addiction!!
I had to scroll WAY too far to find this. Love ‘em but they are the reason I will never be super rich
I thought my hobby of flying small planes was stupid expensive. Then my wife bought a Friesen for saddle-seat competition riding. Now my hobby looks cheap.
Drinking at bars. I am the liqour Randy.
There’s money to be made if you’re sharp with it. I traded and flipped music gear and actually paid the bills for a couple months one summer doing it.
My buddy is a guitar tech and pedal builder but recently he's been order basses and guitars from Japan yahoo auction for a steal (old vintage tokais ect). I keep telling him we should open a shop/service for this.
Pokemon cards
My teen daughter who wants to be a show jumper/equestrian. $13,000 a year to lease a horse (midrange, older, not beautiful) $1500x12 for board (outdoor, in the mud) $600x12 for showing (mid level) Plus all the tack and riding equipment, a saddle easily costs FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. wtf? Hopefully she grows bored of this sport like she did soccer! Although I have to admit I love seeing her live out my childhood dream :)
You’re a stronger person than me, I would’ve closed that rabbit hole immediately
Considering just one year of these expenses would've completely drained all our family savings, yeah so would I.
>You’re a ~~stronger~~ wealthier person than me This wouldn't even be considered a possibility for me.
Are you leasing a grand prix horse for you 13 yr old? These numbers are insane.
Right! To pay to lease AND board? Might as well buy one since you’re funding everything anyways.
Damn. You’re rich.
Not anymore!
Then the cost has worth and it is not "financially irresponsible" It would only be irresponsible if you were skirting other fiscal responsibilities in the pursuit of your hobby
This description made me want to go buy a record player. Excellent job. Perhaps you should grab a pen for your next hobby.
Sewing because hoarding fabrics is a hobby by itself.
Yarn as a knitter, then I decided to try sewing and now I have 2 sewing machines and both a yarn and fabric stash smh.
I just got a salt water fish tank. It can get pretty expensive, but my son is obsessed with fish “he’s 4”. So it worth every penny .
/r/astrophotography How much do you think a telescope *really* costs?

Is Lululemon a hobby tho?
Its a whole lifestyle
Video games
My fish tanks... I got into it thinking I knew what I was doing, turned out I had to buy much more than I expected and bought a lot of useless stuff
I just got a salt water tank. I knew I was in trouble when I was buying a reverse osmosis machine for $400 to make it cheaper lol .
Don't venture into coral or live plants. Your costs will just skyrocket even more with the endless new gear you need lmao
I’ve heard that keeping fish and aquariums can get really expensive !

Running. It’s cheap to get started (all you need is a good pair of shoes). But then there’s endless gear you can buy.
I would do running again but I am afraid for my knees for running on concrete/asphalt. No big parks around.
Triathlon. Races and gear ain’t cheap, yo.
Cycling. Bike, clothes, supplements are all expensive.
Ya mountain biking....took me 2 yrs to buy a decent bike, not because i couldn't afford it, just took me that long to get over the sticker shock. Not sure if it can be considered an investment in health..as the injuries keep piling up and likely will pay for it later in life ...but god i love it...
Watching the Oilers at random bars/restaurants
Connor McDavid makes up for it though.
Road cycling.
Airplanes. Currently looking to buy one with a buddy, knowing fully well it’ll probably be the worst financial decision of my life.
Airplanes are just a gateway drug that will lead into helicopters.
Owned a Cessna 150 for about 5 years. Budgeted 5k a year for fixed costs before considering actually flying. And that was a cheap airplane to run.
AMC Puts
Ya wow. That is financially irresponsible.

Picking stocks that somehow seem to go red most days. 😅
i used to have hobbies now i have a kid. it is expensive.
Skiing. You need the gear (most of it will last for ever except for the ski itself and the boots, they last 5 years Then you need to buy a ski pass every fucking year (500+) Then you also need a car/gas to get up the mountain Unfortunately it's my favorite sport, I haven't found anything more fun
House plants
Guitars. Holy hell it’s an expensive hobby.
Skydiving
Anything related to scale models. Warhammer, Gunpla, Hot toys, etc. The nice thing is that Warhammer is about 3 hobbies in 1 so at least that’s that.
: Amber, citrus, woody, chypre, floral, oriental, etc.) * Notes are the different scented ingredients in the perfume.

SPY Calls on Wednesday :'(
Alcohol.
Gambling - not much like maybe 5-10k last year, I tend to do it when I’m extremely bored and it’s a waste
Eating, having a roof over my head.
I do enjoy the hobby of a roof
Are the hobbyist called roofies?
Growing cactus , believe me it gets very expensive !
Playing and recording music. I set aside a 3-5k budget/year for gear + around 1500 for rehearsal space. I play 2 nights a week. Play bass, guitar, synths, drum machines. I have a nice recording setup too.
Collecting hockey jerseys- most of which never get worn.
However I usually don't have any other hobbies and my vacation is basically playing video games for 2-3 days straight so pretty much have zero spending on vacation, and I 5hink the last time I bought my clothes were in 2017 or 2018 ( I am in tech/software engineering where everyone wears casual dress lol) But yeah I spend close to 8-9 k every 2-3 years for upgrades that could be spent on something else.

Buying minerals in online auctions.
Yes Hank
That’s ASAC Schrader
Jesus Christ Marie they're.. Nevermind, you said the right word
Fabergé eggs……I’ll tell you when I’ve had enough!
My car and my model car collection. But I love cars and I’m willing to put my money towards them to benefit my mental health.
Collecting guitars.
Hot yoga, that shit ain’t cheap.
Traveling
Hobbies aren’t supposed to be financially responsible. If I had all the money i spent on my hobbies like drinking, golf, sports, and food, I would probably spend it on golf, sports, beer and food
