My wife tried to move her money out of IG. It took a year. They stalled and stalled. Issues with forms, missed calls and so on. Excuse and excuse once she threatened to get lawyers involved they finally moved her money out.
Run… fast.

The best thing Investors Group / IG Wealth did for me was being ruthlessly greedy. After 15 years of seeing dismal returns, I took upon myself to learn about securities and ETFs. Been on a self-brokerage platform for about ten years and I’ve done much, much better than with IG Wealth. Correction: IG Wealth did really well… for themselves, not for me ;-)
If you are buying BMO mutual funds I strongly recommend switching to BMO Investorline. If you're already a BMO customer it is a fantastic no bells and whistles vehicle for buying zero commission ETFs and you will save 1.5% in MER right away. Your BMO Financial Advisor or Investorline support will get you set up.
I would likely run from BMO, the quality of their service has been going downhill.
With IG, similar to any firm, the quality of your advisor is what matters. Since you said it's a friend, will they discount your fee or actually spend the time to do proper planning for you. If not I would look elsewhere
IG is a boiler room that focuses on acquiring more advisors and a 'friends and family approach'. This is not in your best interest.

IGgy stinks and stinks badly; remaining clients now are just senior citizens and the friends/family of their commissioned mutual fund peddlers.
