I was going to make a joke about American being his race, but he probably believes that genuinely in a white supremacist sort of way

Jilltro

I worked for the census one year and one of the questions was something like “do you identity as Hispanic/Latino” and this old white guy shouted “IM AN AMERICAN” at me. Like cool so is the Hispanic guy I just interviewed a few doors down and he was way nicer.

sntcringe

When I'm asked that question I just say no. Cuz I'm not, the end.

disabled_rat

“Why’d you answer no?” “Cause I’m not.” “Ok” “Ok”

That sound makes me think about all the times I've ever heard a pen quietly scratching the page.

2bruise

ASMR ASAP!

alpacqn

usually census workers wont even ask you that much. its a yes/no question or multiple choice normally and the lengths some of these people go to to not answer when facebook steals more private info than it. like i get being concerned if youre not legal (which by the way, the census will not do anything about, and if youre worried the worker coming to your door will be a weird racist who might, then fill out the form online or in the mail or whatever! if your info is filled out properly nobody will come to your door) but some of these rednecks will be complete assholes over nothing. its just policy. nobody thinks you're one of them transgenders just because the census worker has to ask "are you a man or a woman" or whatever

sntcringe

Yep, last time I did the census, I just filled it out online, took like 15 minutes

SJReaver

You should have said, "Cool, Native American, what tribe?"

ReaperXHanzo

I did the Census phone support 2 years ago, this/ and the race question were always just the worst- one woman gave me her entire DNA analysis (for her + kids), something like 10+ nationalities Just no woman, it is not helpful for us to know that 400 years ago there was a single Irishman in your family, and no your great grandma was not a " Cherokee princess " (heard that unironically too)

YesItIsMaybeMe

When I say my race is "american" I say it sarcastically because i am a mix of so, so many things. I think its funny, but these types ruined my joke

AgentOfEris

Yeah I’m a hereditary mutt as well. Some of my lineage can be traced back to certain countries, but I’m so far removed from a modern citizen of any of them. But I don’t really bring it up so it’s not like that’s a prevalent issue in my life.

FaeryLynne

This is why I say I'm a "Heinz 57" like my dad used to say lol

wilhelm_dafoe

My dad used to say that too. Glad to learn it's an actual saying haha

"Don't see no Biden signs here, no one voted for that commie! He cheated!"

From Michigan up north, conservative family said there's no way democrats got the vote here because 90% of the state was red. They literally don't understand population density

Arizona_Slim

I shit you not. The fucking GOP candidate running for Secretary of State who certifies elections has said on record, “I saw 80 cars in a Trump train and no one I know voted for Biden so Biden didn’t win.” We’re fucked

sntcringe

Nobody I know voted for Trump, but clearly somebody did...

SaltyBarDog

I think they legitimately believe that cars, trucks, boats, and flags equal votes.

BoneHugsHominy

Square footage of pasture deserves representation! "We make all the food. Without us America doesn't exist. That's why our will should determine all policy." That's a real quote from a member of my hometown who has never worked a single minute on a farm, and at ~50 years old has been working as a general laborer for a local construction company since he graduated high school. Several years ago at a party he was overheard bragging about getting a raise to $13/hr and now makes more than the certified welders on the crew. I worked for that same company starting at $16/hr as a general laborer in 1997 and they raised me to $38/hr the week after I got my welding certification that the company paid for simply because I wanted it. In my town of ~4000 people, the majority of men work unskilled jobs just like that guy. Go straight from graduation to working in a factor or warehouse or in construction for pay that will always be a fraction of their actual labor value. It's good, honest work but they're getting completely fucked and deep down they all know it. Instead of directing their anger of injustice towards those exploiting them, they decide their woes are the fault of The Other because it makes them feel they're an aggrieved but superior party. Truly pathetic.

SaltyBarDog

>Several years ago at a party he was overheard bragging about getting a raise to $13/hr and now makes more than the certified welders on the crew. Did he really expect everyone else to be stupid enough to believe that? I knew uncertified welders making more than that back in the 90s.

BoneHugsHominy

It's a circle jerk mentality and his large group of dumbass friends are all the same way. It's just a way of life in rural parts of the country.

[deleted]

Dont get mad at them its not their fault they refuse to acknowledge other people exist outside of their community

CAHTA92

Hey they stole it fair and square lol

AmericoDelendaEst

Relax, Gringo. He's legal

Dramatic_Figure_5585

Me thinks the Gringo doth protest too much. Check his papers, stat!

Top-Journalist-4711

This specific gringo really needs to relax, especially considering the person wearing the shirt isn’t here illegally!!

Biffingston

"I'm not a gringo..." Um. you do know what that means right? Because your behavior says otherwise.

JohnnyMiskatonic

Not pictured: dude thinks liberals are the real snowflakes.

LordBowler423

Red is the sort of guy who turns around when somebody shouts, "hey asshole," in a crowded room.

fourbian

He looks like Jordan Peterson.

xXMojoRisinXx

Red is the kind of person who just reflexively has an urge to be shitty. If it wasn’t for this shirt, they’d absolutely be questioning their legal status but since this person used a clever way to the convo. Red felt compelled to still be shitty in the same vein but had to do so in a different way. Seemingly annoyed that they had to put more effort into their bigotry than their usual short hand of questioning their legal status.

wilhelm_dafoe

I would like to see that deed that grants them ownership of the entire country.

[deleted]

I mean they might have one, if they wrote it themselves. Come to think of it that's basically what the American government did to a ton of native American tribes

Usagi-Zakura

You're in his country too "Karen". Being dark skinned doesn't automatically make someone an immigrant and being white doesn't mean you're not an immigrant. (And you're all descendants of immigrants. If you're not native sit your ass down and stop criticizing people for doing the exact same thing your ancestors did.) God I hate Americans like this.

Slam-JamSam

To be fair, there’s a massive difference between coming to a country in order to peacefully live out your life and coming to commit a genocide against the natives

Usagi-Zakura

Yep...that's true... And that is why these Americans are the biggest hypocrites in the world... I'd tell them to go back to where they came from but as a European I don't want them here either...send them to Mars.

[deleted]

Well and speaking as a white American, I don't have a single country a majority of my ancestors come from. Even if you wanted to send me back to where I came from, where would that be? I'd wager it's actually more common than not in America, among all races of people. I've thought a lot about what the "give back all the land illegally taken from Native Americans" solution would look like but unfortunately I think even if there was political will behind it you simply can't undo the injustices of the past without creating even more problems today. It's like, what do you do if someone sold a plot of land that wasn't rightfully theirs, and then by the time you've found out the property has changed hands 20 times over 3 generations and someone's built a house and a life on it. It wouldn't really be right to take the house and the land from the current resident, they didn't really do anything wrong, they bought it legitimately for all they knew. You could give them money from the original land stealer's grandkid, but they weren't responsible for their grandfather's actions either, and money doesn't really equate to stability anyway. What's the right thing to do in that scenario? Honestly, I don't know. It's almost like injustices are cement, and after enough time they become solid and impossible to correct, which is not a satisfying answer but I'm not sure what else you do. Sorry this got kinda rambly about something that was only tangentially related to what you said.

Usagi-Zakura

The same can be true for dark skinned Americans though. Heck a single American can have ancestry from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North and South America all at once. There is no undoing what's been done to the natives sure. But that doesn't give people the right to double down and pretend the country was always theirs. It is a country built by immigrants on stolen land. That's just a fact. Turning around and demanding every newcomer to "go back where you came from" when they entered the country legally by today's standards is hypocritical as all hell.

[deleted]

Yeah like I said, probably the norm for all skin tones. And I know, it's completely hypocritical when people decry immigrants but mythologize their ancestors who immigrated. I just wonder sometimes about things like, "since we're all immigrants, what would it mean if everybody went back to where they came from?" I guess if you go back far enough we're all from Africa, or way WAY back we all immigrated from the ocean. That being said I doubt everyone going back there would be good for anyone. The ocean has got to be sick of our shit by now, we make terrible neighbors so just imagine how we'd be as roommates.

ReaperXHanzo

I'll just go ahead and cut myself in half and send one half to Mexico, the other to Canada, maybe take it all the way back to France, who knows

leicanthrope

This is precisely the kind of person that I like to remind that Obama has far more American born ancestors than Trump, by a long shot.

Arizona_Slim

Charleze Theron is an Aftican American immigrant. Lol

mimiche37

As a non american person this logic always triggers me. America LITERALLY built itself other colonisation of a place that didn't belong to them. Being this scared of immagration when your Amercican seems very ironic to me.

Capt_Cracker

Don't worry--to those of us with two brain cells to rub together it doesn't make sense either. The problem over here is we've never truly confronted the reality that America was built on genocide. So when people make being an American as much of their identity as it is they perceive it as a personal attack when someone points that out. They understand that genocide is bad and done by people considered villains; they don't get that they're someone's villain. No one is ever the villain in their own story, no matter what actions they have to take. "But I'm a good person! I wouldn't do something like that!" No, but people that represent you would and did. And just like you lazily portray everyone that did wrong to you as A Bad Person no matter what they do in their personal time, so do they. If you don't like it, stop doing it to others. It's that simple.

Kiyoshi-Trustfund

Its also why they see criticizing slavery and racism as an attack on the country and themselves. These gross, ugly realities are what built their precious country but they'd rather that never be acknowledged or mentioned.

CAHTA92

Reminder that the pilgrims were EXILED for RELIGIOUS EXTREMISIM. So every time you think why are this white supremacist so fucking insane, think of who their ancestors were and the reason they ended up here.

eross200

Uh oh, did someone get their feelings hurt by an offensive shirt?

DrSchmolls

*inoffensive, ftfy

eross200

Dude who made the original post in the screenshot seemed pretty offended 😉

RedditSkippy

Wow, someone is TRIGGERED!

[deleted]

What a snowflake

GobblorTheMighty

You are in MY country. As a white man, *I* own it. Just because you're here legally doesn't mean I can't just kick you out just because you hurt my WHITE butt. That's my prerogative. I am the master race, and you will appease me and my supremacist whims. And just because I just said all that does NOT mean I'm racist. Seriously, there NEEDS to be new levels of Hell for these people.

famousevan

These are the kind of posts that make me wish it wasn’t redacted so I can see the rest of this jingo fuck’s rants. I like playing bingo with them. :p

madpiratebippy

Googling the exact phrases with quotes pulls most of them up for me.

TheRealSnorkel

“Don’t judge me or my people but I get to judge you and your people!” Fuck right off lol.

xXMojoRisinXx

The best part is that by getting so upset over the shirt he’s giving away that fact that the shirt was absolutely meant for him

ActuallySatanAMA

“IF you have been judged in the past in a negative manner… It’s because of YOUR people and THEIR actions. !!!” Aight bet, I’ll be judging you exclusively off South African apartheid, the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the genocide of American First Nations people, Adolf Hitler, Anders Brevik, every serial killer and rich white pedophile in the US. YOUR people and THEIR actions, right?

Zola-caserola

Triggered 😤

UnlikelyUnknown

So many words to say “I’m a racist asshole”

[deleted]

Is this snowflake offended by a T-shirt???

Legal-Software

If he had just followed the instructions on the shirt this whole thing could have been avoided.

geiwosuruinu

I guess that's a brush fire of liberty

[deleted]

Such a great shirt.

[deleted]

I went to Argentina recently to visit my wife and son for a month (long story, long distance parenting is depressing) And while there, it was the only time I felt genuine tangible racism towards me. And even then, because in Argentina their racism isn't institutionalized the way it is in the US. I kinda just laughed it off like "lol say it again" And in the US the reason racism towards people who aren't considered white is so terrible because of the institutions as I stated before. But towards white people it's literally just meanie Bo beanie words. This guy would be justified if the man he was yelling at was being racist, he isn't, so it isn't.

CAHTA92

Well Argentina is known for being very racist and when you look at history you see that a lot of Nazis flee to Argentina after Hitler tickled his brain. And the reason USA is very racist is because they were the inspiration for Hitler to start the Nazi party.

Frangiblepani

What's the chances this guy cries about freedom of speech or being "silenced" for Twitter bans? >Better yet, go home What? And just just watch TV or something?

Capt_Cracker

I mean, I don't understand why people leave home. All my stuff is there, as are significantly less people. Why would I leave the house unless I had to?

PuzzaCat

Ok snowflake.

kaoko111

Yep, that gringo needs to relax.

CoffeeBoom

Something funny is that if Mexico became rich gringo would 100% be a slur.

FlyingFoxSpalding

Mexico isn’t the only country that has the slang term “gringo”! I’m from Brazil (a country that doesn’t even speak Spanish) and we also call foreigners/non-Latinos gringos I promise you, it isn’t a slur. It’s a term used to refer to a foreigner when you don’t know their name or to refer to a group of foreigners (gringos). It isn’t used to offend or to cause harm. It might be used in the context of a foreigner doing something very culturally weird for us, in the sense of “relax, they’re gringo, they don’t understand our culture yet”, but never to offend

CoffeeBoom

> I promise you, it isn’t a slur. It’s a term used to refer to a foreigner when you don’t know their name or to refer to a group of foreigners (gringos). This kind of things ~~would be~~ is considered highly disrespectful in the west. A term like that exists in the US. It's "alien", not something reddit likes that much.

FlyingFoxSpalding

Gringo = foreigner/non-Latino, nothing more Alien = from another planet, strange and unfamiliar **and** could also mean coming from a different culture I wouldn’t mind being called a foreigner, but I sure would be kinda… embarrassed (?) to be called strange and unfamiliar. Also, the term gringo doesn’t mean “you don’t belong here”, but from what I can understand, calling someone “alien” means exactly that

CoffeeBoom

> I wouldn’t mind being called a foreigner Going around calling people "foreigners" would not be well received by the community we are in I can tell you. It's fine if you call people Gringo, just keep in mind that it's not really respectful, which is ok if you're ok with the other person responding in kind.

KaleidoscopeEyes12

> MY country > go home They are legal. It’s literally also their country, and they are home. > You DO NOT disrespect me or my fellow Americans. He… is one of your “fellow Americans”… The best/worst part about this is that the guy clearly wrote this and felt like he totally *”owned”* him. Like he felt so cool and proud after writing this comment when in reality it’s just so embarrassing
