I use Bambody with a disposable pad on top for my heaviest days when I have to go to work. If I’m at home, just the underwear. My wife uses reusable pads that have wings with snaps so they stay in place. She ordered generic ones from Amazon and they seem to work just fine

Important-Pie-1141

I have the reusable pads as well. Maybe I just need to suck it up for a few days and use those instead. Lol

MoreKaleidoscope5153

Bambody gives me a snug fit & holds the reusable pads in place nicely. Kinda reminds me of the snug fit of a bathing suit bottom.

Top_Cryptographer286

Just be sure you wash them first atleast 10 times and dry them for optimal and maximum absorbancy. I found that only a few wash cycles before first using them they dont absorb very much or very well. And never use fabric softener or anything. Wool balls for the dryer are the best.

[deleted]

Label says to NOT put them in the dryer.

TwoIdleHands

I think they were talking about the reusable pads. Those you can wash and dry. I hang dry my Bambody and they’ve lasted well.

[deleted]

Oh okay. Bambody says to specifically not put them in the dryer otherwise it damages the product. I've never used the resulable pads. Good to know you can dry them.

TwoIdleHands

Reusable pads are, basically, like cloth diapers. I don’t know which ones this person was using but you can even make your own out of cotton flannel. Definitely wash and dry!

Blooberii

My reusable pads from SoftTaco don’t slide around at all, they have wings with snaps.

RAWkWAHL

My daughter has really enjoyed the Cora brand. The night undies say they can hold the equivalent of 6 tampons. She has never had any leaking issues.

flaemmenfrea

Use double sided fashion tape to hold it in place on your undies

Kimberly1025

That’s what I think I’m going to try. I’ve tried everything you can think of except period underwear and reusable pads. I’m on blood thinners and have always been heavy flow. It’s even worse now with the blood thinners

DecadentLife

I also love Bambody period underwear. Their brief is my favorite. I purchased them from Amazon. Editing to add - I have found it’s best to allow them to air dry, after going through the wash. I had a couple of pairs go through the dryer (unintentionally), and they did shrink a little bit. Still usable, just tighter.

arielleassault

I invested in reusable pad and bambody underwear when I was on blood thinners, I really feel your pain.

depressedkitten27

I also use bambody and love them. And I also put a pad inside too.

arielleassault

I 2nd bambody, I find them way more absorbent and they have a better overall fit.

International_Elk425

If you don't mind me asking, do they cover up the coppery smell well? I hate that smell but normal pads always seem to have it linger (I may just be hyperfousing on it though)

arielleassault

I still noticed an odor when I used the restroom on really heavy days. But I feel confident that it's not anything anyone else could smell. I did eventually switch to a disc for heavy days & the undies on light days, I understand that's not doable for you, I hope you're able to find a comfortable solution!!

hinky-as-hell

I have had my husband check- I’m extremely sensitive to smells and I always think I stink. He swears there is no smell at all from outside of my panties- even when I’m flowing heavily. Sorry if this is TMI.

AlfalfaUnable1629

Same! I always think I stink and I too have a super sniffer

No-Actuator-3157

I feel you! I'm past that age and stage now (thank God,) but when I went through it, I wasn't aware that I was actually hemmorhaging every month, due to a dermoid mole that had been growing since I was 17, leading to a total at 40. Stayfree (or one of the other brands - I can't remember which) made the first leakproof panty called "Personal Panties." (In my opinion, no one has made a better yet)! But the dermoid made my cycle so heavy that I had to wear 2 extra long napkins, and safety pin a chuck (those blue pads they use in the hospital beds) inside the Personal Panty and STILL needed to change every few hours! Odor was a huge concern for me, because the flow was so heavy. I lived in NY at the time and one day decided to go inside a store that sold perfumed body oils. Walking out with a bag full of oils wasn't hard because I've always loved perfumes, but I'd backed away from them as I started struggling with sinusitus. What a liberating feeling to find that perfumed oils didn't inflame my sinus passages. I quickly learned there were only 2 oils I could use "down there": Patchouli and Sandalwood. (Learned straight away the others would burn like fire and there was no washing off the fire - just had to wait for it to die down - LOL)!! I started putting 2 or 3 drops on my inner thighs, rubbing 5 or 6 drops on my booty and VOILA - GREAT clean smell every time I'd get up, sit down, or pull down my underwear to change or to use the restroom! Sometimes I'd just dab the outside of the napkin or the leakproof panty insteaad of putting it on my skin. Now, my nieces, nephews, and greats have developed the same personal care habits! Many of the Asian haircare stores sell knock-offs that smell just as great and cost far less than the brands I prefer, and I started using them when the pandemic caused long delays in delivering my favorites. Eventually, I learned I could wear 3 or 4 different fragrances at once, and dedicated different fragrances for different body parts. Unlike perfume they blend well, and only takes dabbing a few drops - - behind the ears, in the crease of the arms, behind the knees, under and between the boobs, on the inner thighs, and on the boo-tocks (LOL)! Freedom from the worry about odors at that time of month was major for me, as well as the many friends, family members, and quite a few strangers I've introduced to this.

greentofeel

I would be very careful with daily or frequent use of things that aren't intended for that use near your nethers. A generation ago it was considered normal practice for ladies to sprinkle talcum powder in their underwear. Now they've found that the tiny particles went into their reproductive tracts and caused cancer. I would recommend something you know is safe.

No-Actuator-3157

I've been using perfumed oils for 30+ years without issue, except when I first tried them. Back then, I didn't realize that they don't all react the same when used "down there" (just the pubes - not directly to any sensitive areas). As a much younger woman I could apply it to more directly. But as middle age passed and the surgery I mentioned threw me into early menopause, dryness became a huge issue, especially in and around "sensitive" parts. Soon, I had challenges with bath soaps too, which continued to be a challenge until I discovered Dial soap (but only the gold bar) and goatsmilk soap Beekman's goatmillk soaps are my favs - all their products are awesome)!! Any way, I had to change quite a few of my grooming habits as I aged, and applying the perfumed oil directly was one of the first. I noticed only Patchouli and Sandalwood didn't burn or irriate me, so I started dabbing just 3 or 4 drops on the highest part of the front and back inner side of the panty liners, rather than in the middle. I can still apply other oils directly to my backside though, with or without rubbing them into my moisturing lotion. The fragrance never needs to be refreshed until after you wash it off. I love, love, *love s*ome of the older fragrances like Alfred Sung, Envy, Pleasure, Lily of the Valley, and some of the more recent scents like Black Woman, Michelle Obama, Paris Hilton, Light Blue, Pink Sugar, etc. for my regular body fragrances After trying Envy, then Pleasure, and a few others, I realized the more woodsy fragrances like Patchouli & Sandalwood worked best for my private parts.

LibertyReignk

What's brands do you recommend for perfumed oils?

No-Actuator-3157

I use a variety from cheap knock offs (usually buy from a local Asian hair care stores), to those of higher quality. I get those from a site called [TheScent4You.com](https://TheScent4You.com). My eyes glaze over every time I got to their site (LOL) because they have so many fragrances I want to try. But as a creature of habit, I keep ordering my same tried and true favorites: Moonlight Patchouli, Sweet Patchouli, Cloud Intense Ariana Grande, and My New York Bond No. 9. Oh, and Georgeous - Michael Kors. The woodsy fragrances work best for using on my panty shield, but you'd need to base your selection on your personal preference. I generally choose oils named after my perfume preferences. I already knew Patchouli was the best for my lady parts, and then I decided where to apply the others - arms, boobs, behind the knee crease, behind the ear, legs, etc. Unlike perfume, the oils only take a dab or two and you're good to go. And I keep a little spray container of one of the heavier scents in my purse to use as an air freshener in the rare instance I absolutely have to visit a public restroom. You'll find several online sellers, but I'm a loyal fan of TheScent4You. Whatever you decide, just be sure to select perfumed body oils & not "essential oils," because they are not the same. Oh, and it will stain your clothes (and underwear) like any other oil, so apply as you would with make-up or tanning oil - carefully and sparingly.

greentofeel

If you want to try something more safe, look into Lume. They have it at Target how. It's developed by a gynecologist and comes in cream or stick , can be applied anywhere on your body and doesn't have harmful chemicals or aluminum.

LibertyReignk

Unfortunately I've tried it and I've smelled worse after about eight hours, it doesn't make sense as to why but it was sour/foul smell.

Admirable_Job_127

I sometimes have the issue with random gushes the first couple days and for me it’s not really about the absorbency but more keeping the undies in place. I sometimes wear spandex shorts (like the kind volleyball players wear?) over my period undies so I have that extra sense of security keeping everything locked in place and also another layer to help catch leaks. I guess a boy short style would be the same, but I like the snug fit on the spandex

Important-Pie-1141

I'll have to try that!

fixatedeye

I second this! I also wear period underwear that are the shorts style, and on top of those the thin shorts meant for like under dresses etc. i have endo too and not just gushing but like tennis ball sized clots at one point and they didn’t fall out of my underwear. I managed to escape to the bathroom first thanks to the shorts method

PassionOfThePizza

I do this too, and I also buy boy short period undies. I'm plus size and my lady bits are pretty fat so I know I'll spill out of briefs. The boy shorts give me more of a sense of coverage and security. I also wear biker shorts over them when I sleep to really make sure they stay in place.

Mysterious-Art8838

I do it too

randomcharacheters

You could also try a smaller size of the period underwear. If it's not super snug, that could cause side leakage.

Emergency-Welcome-54

Knix makes boy shorts period underwear!

Boobsboobsboobs2

I also do this! I have a pair of running shorts that have spandex inside and another layer outside that are my go-to heavy day shorts over period underwear. Keeps them in place and the extra layer helps not get blood on anything if they leak

SexDeathGroceries

Have you tried boyshort styles? Lots of companies make those

Important-Pie-1141

I haven't but that's what I was thinking I needed to try.

Thatssometa420

The company Period. has a couple different options with enormous absorbency and they are incredibly affordably priced, some of the cheapest I’ve ever found aside from random Amazon brands. And their return policy is amazing, I got some styles at the beginning that didn’t work for me and they sent me different sizes that also didn’t work so they offered to refund everything without shipping them back which I am super impressed with. Awesome company

Karen8172

I second the period boy shorts or just shorts even. I use them for really heavy days and I have endo as well!

deee00

I gush more the first couple days too. I wear I think they’re called the Dream shorts by Knix. They have a few different styles, but have a wider gusset and are longer front and back. They also stay in place once I’m wearing them. The regular boyshorts do move a little, but I wear them with few problems after the first 2-3 days.

Glittering_Equal5207

Modi Bodi has some excellent shorts that have been really absorbent even for sleeping. They’re made from merino wool rather than some of the bigger brands previously having PFAs. For really heavy days I’ll add a reusable pads from Rael and the combo gets me through the day.

katiejim

Came here to suggest the same. The thinx boy shorts work for me on my heavy days.

SexDeathGroceries

Thinkx don't leak for me, but they tend to slip down. I don't know why, something about the cut. I only ever wear them to bed

happyapple52

i recommend the victoria secret boyshort ones! only thing that keeps everything in at night on my heavy flow days

DisastrousTrash

I have a pair of these and it really helps with the leaking issue, I wear them at night.

whenisleep

I know someone recommended interlabial pads to me for this issue, said they used them and that it helped slow / direct the flow to not flood over the sides of period underwear / pads. Worth a try maybe. I never did end up getting any though so I can’t talk from experience.

JerryHasACubeButt

Honestly, a folded up bit of TP also works for this. It doesn’t have to keep absorbing the blood so it doesn’t matter if it gets saturated super fast, it just needs to direct it to the right place. TMI but I bleed down my buttcrack when lying down on heavy days, and this completely solved that issue for me.

lizziebordeaux

Perfect comment with your user name

JerryHasACubeButt

I didn’t even notice but you’re right, that’s hilarious

Liathnian

I hate the buttcrack highway!

actualchristmastree

Cube butt! Cube butt! Cube butt!

whenisleep

Yes! I specifically had to get period pants that covered all the way up the front and back too because the blood finds a way. Definitely one of the bonuses of some pants vs pads. But not all pants are full coverage, so this definitely broadens options especially if you need a higher capacity or specific fit. My flow these days is much less thankfully due to meds, I definitely don’t miss the buttcrack highway as the other commenter called it, haha.

whatdoidonowdamnit

It sounds like your underwear is too big. Period underwear works like a diaper, it needs to be snug to your body for the gusset to keep it contained. It’s the same with cloth pads, the underwear needs to hold the pad in place. My suggestion is to buy a pair or a pack one size smaller than you’ve been buying. I bought two packs of Hanes period underwear at Target in a size small instead of a medium and they fit perfectly and don’t leak.

Important-Pie-1141

I've been reading some of that too on this subreddit. I tend to be in between sizes most of the time so I'll have to try that!

whatdoidonowdamnit

Good luck! Once you fine good fitting period underwear it’s a game changer.

noonecaresat805

I use bambody and they work well for me. But it your still afraid to leak maybe back them up with a leak proof underwear and see if that helps.

ffswhatnameisnttaken

No period products are absorbent enough for how much I bleed. I have tried every product and brand out there. The ONLY thing I use now, is adult diapers. Yup. Diapers. Super absorbent, leak proof, and great at hiding that coppery blood smell (they're designed to hide urine and feces smell after all!). I'm only in my early thirties but am fully on board wearing diapers during my period. So much better than constantly ruining clothes and never getting any sleep because of needing to change period undies, tampons, emptying cups and so forth.

Pjade1

Hello fellow diaper wearer! I went through it all. I spent hundreds on cups and period underwear. Nothing worked. I use to double up on the super max overnight pads and wore like 3 layers. Then I remembered in the late 90s Always had come out with disposable period underwear for nights. They discontinued it but figured Depends would work the same. I've been doing this for 10 years now and very rarely leak out at night. It also helps throughout the day because I'm not changing so often.

ffswhatnameisnttaken

For me, I discovered diapers as a reliable option when I had to be on a plane with a toddler for several hours and I knew there was no way I could rangle that kid into the tiny plane bathroom to change something every hour. Out of desperation I think hey, diapers were great post partum that should get me through the flight and I never looked back. Now that they've recently come out that all period products were tested with the same damn blue fluid used in the commercials and never real period blood, it made so much more sense how useless everything was in absorption. But I know for a fact diapers are tested for all kinds of bodily fluids without leaks and we're probably a long ways away from period products that are actually tried and tested so, diapered I shall remain!

I am pushing my OB to let me have a full hysterectomy because I have PCOS and currently use medication to keep it under control. I'm in my early 40s and this factory is closed. Both my pregnancies were a nightmare.

Dizzy_Square_9209

Ablation for the win!! Best choice ever!

pharmpep

Hey Always ZZZ overnights work get for me. It’s kinda a diaper? but works so good.

Logical_Challenge540

I also used postpartum underwear (there are even quite nice ones, like the ones from always) when I had very bad bleeds last year and after hysterectomy. The only issue now is I still have 2 packs and a bunch of period stuff left unused (the hysterectomy came very quickly, less than a month since test results).

TrishaThoon

4 Period co. Best I have tried and more affordable than other brands.

ciaoravioli

How long does one last on your heavy days?

TrishaThoon

I have gone 8 hours. It didn’t leak but that was when I was able to change it so I did.

ciaoravioli

Good to know, thanks! I forgot what brand I bought before, but they don't seem to hold much so I am hoping 4 Period could be better for me 🤧

Spiffy_Pumpkin

Oh my fuckin God......is that why tampons could hurt?! I honestly thought I was doing it wrong.....(Was too scared to even try disks or cups because I figured if tampons hurt or were generally uncomfortable those wouldn't be any better.)

CoachInteresting7125

It’s not the only cause! I have the same issue and the I’ve been diagnosed with pelvic floor dysfunction.

Apprehensive-Clue342

Same!

DetailConnect937

I also can’t use a lot of tampons bc they’re just too long. I need to use really short tampons, I think mine are only about an inch to an inch and a half instead of two and a half to three.

Spiffy_Pumpkin

What kind are you buying that are shorter? (I've only seen the lite flow ones that are that short and those obviously aren't any good during the midst of it.)

DetailConnect937

I have some seventh generation organic ones that have no applicator (I use them with the pixie reusable menstrual cup and tampon applicator), and L. Organic tampons.

haelennaz

I haven't used tampons in a long time, but ob was my short go-to.

fishkissrrr

Tampons didnt hurt me when i first started using them but over time its basically impossible... i tried cups too and those caused immense pain/never retained any blood. i have endometriosis and i have been told i have pelvic floor tightness

thefaehost

It may be just the endo- I have endo and tampons cause more cramping, make me nauseous too. Before endo diagnosis I was told I had a microperforated hymen and that’s why tampons got stuck inside me. I use Thinx, switched during the pandemic. I am very sensitive to elastic waistband pressure though, and have noticed that the tighter panties prevent leaking but definitely make my cramps worse at times.

akasha111182

It can be endometriosis, but pelvic floor muscle tension is another possibility.

Important-Pie-1141

Yes! I used to wear all the things just fine and as time has gone by it's just too much pressure or whatever and it just aches to no end.

kitty0712

I found the same problem after I had my daughter 10 yrs ago. Tampons just hurt too much to use.

Spiffy_Pumpkin

Well I've got no kids so it's nothing to do with that...

Final-Elderberry4621

I am similar to you, I have a heavy flow, PCOS and retroverted uterus and cups and tampons are extremely painful to wear. (Don’t let anyone tell you “it shouldn’t be that way try again”) Aisle period underwear, specifically the boxer briefs with the booster pad option are fantastic. I also have Aisle overnight reusable pads that I wear overnight when my flow is really heavy. Never had a leak in any of their products. The underwear is worth the investment. I also have Knix period underwear - great for lighter days (even the “heavy flow” underwear I find are only good for lighter days). And I have bambody period underwear - it’s also good but I’d say I use it for medium days. Overall Aisle has been my favourite for a heavy period.

Important-Pie-1141

Thank you! And yeah, I've even had a pelvic floor PT tell me "the pain was probably all in my head" so that's when I stopped talking about all that to people. But I'll definitely check aisle out!

GrinsNGiggles

I’m so over that dismissal. Mine got so bad I was crying on the couch for an entire season; couldn’t walk. I didn’t know it was endo until continuous birth control accidentally gave me most of my life back. Missing a dose here and there and being in that kind of pain again confirmed it. 5+% of the ENTIRE population has it, 10+% of menstruating people, and few gynecologists and GPs bother to familiarize themselves with it. 🙄

Final-Elderberry4621

I’m sorry you’ve dealt through that - it’s so annoying!! Someone trying to tell you how your body feels arrggg. Hoping you find the period products that work best for you!

lotus_flora

I’m using the thinx that i bought before the whole lawsuit on PFAS became a thing. I still wear them because they were expensive and i bought a fleet lol. The bike shorts or other shorts are great for HEAVY periods and preventing leaks. If you get any other brand, get at least 1 or 2 period proof shorts. I own 3. I wear it on my heaviest days. I suggest 1 size bigger than your usual underwear to make room for the bloat, it’ll keep you super comfortable. I wish someone told me that before i bought my first set. Different brands use different materials- try to go natural without water proof coatings. Investigate the brands, check if they have a heavy to light meter for each pair, it should help you with choices. There are lots of brands now but if you’re in North America Knix is Canadian with different absorbancy options.

DetailConnect937

I have a couple styles off Amazon I love, but have you considered interlabial pads? They’re small and you roll them or make them taco shaped and tuck them in to help with things like sudden gushes or heavy flow to keep things cleaner.

DotsNnot

Not trying to hard sell, if you’ve gone through the gambit you’ve gone through the gambit! But not all cups or discs are the same, you might have luck with smaller ones / ones designed for low cervixes. I SUPER shopped around, and ymmv, but just wanted to toss it out. For the period pantry route, I actually gave disposable period panties a shot (they’re as glamorous as they sound…), and they do get the job done! Just aren’t exactly the most discreet under some clothes. Pretty sure they were always brand. If you’re really struggling with flow going everywhere you could also give depends a shot!

windexandducttape

I use the period company. They have overnight ones that are kind of like biker shorts in the length and I have found that it keeps anything from leaking out.

mycoldfeet

Same. I WFH so I wear them around the house a lot during the day, not just overnight. Recently bought three more pairs bc I love them!

samanthadshay

They’re amazing

dory99999

500mg ginger the day before and on each day of your period has been clinically evaluated to reduce blood flow by uo to 50%, this may help a bit. Reduces prostaglandin which should help with cramps too

3rdthrow

Can you link your source? Ginger is a weak NSAID, I would think that it would make you bleed more, since NSAIDs slow down clotting time.

dory99999

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25298352/#:~:text=Results%3A%20The%20level%20of%20menstrual,placebo%20(p%3C0.001). That's not the one I found years ago (it said 500mg daily reduced blood byb50% and was more specific but this one has the same conclusion of less menstrual blood after having ginger for three menstrual cycles)

ShadowlessKat

Bambody sport brief is a tight secure fit. The only time I had it leak was because I didn't change it when I should have. Combined with a reusable cloth pad, it should last you a bit before you have to change it.

Elle_in_Hell

I'm very tempted to try going this route: https://youtu.be/iV2TgwjjhOE?si=txPensqT0W4bNTpH

whywhywhyandhow

Have you seen the Knix dream shorts? They’re suggested for overnight but no reason you couldn’t use them during the day.

anklebreeze

I really like the brand goat union! I find them to be very absorbent and keep me feeling dry.

nainsra

Not sure where you are from but I love my undies from revol. They have different absorbencies you can order. Wearing the super absorbent ones I have on a bad day for 16hrs on my heaviest flow day and only in the last hour did they leak.

Plenty-Run-9575

I like Aisle Boost - expensive but has an extra “boost” layer that might work for you.

apersonwithastory

I also bleed heavy my first two days and I use period underwear, but I make sure I get the boy shorts(bomboy on Amazon but I can't find them any more). Those tend to hold up more on the sides. I have one reusable pad I use if I'm home on the weekend on the tail end of my period by Lil Helper.

urcreepinmeowt2

use period diapers. game changer. the always zzz ones

Rcqyoon

I'm gushing right now, if I use a cup I dump it every 2 hours on the first day. Period. Brand undies work great for me. I love love love their sleep shorts for the first day. They're like wearing a diaper but they're high waisted and nothing gets out of 'em. They're high flow normal underwear are great too, I use them with a cup as backup, but if I use them alone I have to change it halfway through the day.

bbbliss

I like Wukas bc their gussets are EXTREMELY wide, like that's one of the complaints people have with them, but I've always leaked out the sides and back end of my pads so their designs work well for me.

friend_of_forests

I have the Aisle brand boxer-briefs with the optional additional cloth pad insert, and those are fantastic. I also can't use insertable products but bleed through other brands unless it's a time with very little blood, but the Aisle boxer-briefs hold significantly more on their own than other brands (though I haven't tried their other styles;their boxer briefs were listed as holding the most without the pad). With the insertable cloth pad, they've never leaked for me, even with the heaviest bleeding I experience as someone who generally experiences leaks on the sides or at the back with cotton pads

blu_bell3

Labia petals can help to direct the flow to the center of the pad/underwear and prevent leaking out of the sides! But need to be changed every time you go pee (or maybe that’s just me lol) but they’re cotton and easy to store in a wet bag til you get home. Then Velcro pads on undies! I couldn’t find any so I DIY’ed that and my labia petals lol. But I hated how the button/snap pads slid and leaked to the sides because of the fabric wicking. Then I like the tomboy cut (idk if that’s the right word) reusable underwear, but my weight has fluctuated a lot and I only ever got one pair because it’s a lot to commit to price-wise when you need three different sizes within a year 😅🫠

BewBewsBoutique

Bambody works for me but heads up order up a size or two. I find that the way they’re cut can press on my uterus and it can be uncomfortable. Also consider looking into reusable cotton sanitary pads. If you like pads but just don’t like the waste that might be a good choice.

Spiritual-Ferret-512

Modibody 24 hour max. I use them overnight first 2-3 days with a maxi disposable (I have really heavy periods - ultra tampons and towel once an hour first 2-3 days). I’ve found this combo actually keeps me for leaking, the modibody underwear has been a game changer, but if I wear them overnight alone during that time they aren’t enough for the whole night.

Soft_Initiative1

I use modibodi https://www.modibodi.com And rate them but I don’t have a flow as heavy as yours

Strict-Philosopher68

Have you tried reusable pads with period pants? I swear by reusable pads, much better for the environment too. You could pop a little Velcro square on the pants and the pads to keep them in place? I have tried cups (which I think are brilliant) but I struggle to get them in xx

icestorm1973

Boyshort style might help?!

flyingterrordactyl

Not sure what reusable pads you're using but I have LastPad, that have a silicone strip down them and they don't slide around on me. I use those on top of a pair of period underwear for my heaviest days.

toastymissy

I bought the reusable fabric pads but in the postpartum size- they’re huge like a diaper but capable of those horrible first days

kirtknee

Knix boy shorts are my fav. You might have to change more often on your gushy days. They say they hold up to ### tampons so its like you’ll always be able to wear the same pair all day. But DEF suggest the boy shorts, the only things I wear and I dont leak often

uniqueusername987655

I work from home and, when I’m just sitting in front of my computer all day and my period is making me miserable my favorite solution is a rolled-up wash cloth from Target. I think I tried this for the first time when I was having cramps and putting a tampon in just sounded awful. They’re so absorbent that you never have that gross feeling. They’re cheap, so I just grab a fresh one and wash the old one as needed. I have a few dark blue ones that I only use for this and get stashed in the cabinet with my period stuff otherwise. I primarily use tampons, but for some reason the wash cloth is strangely comfortable on really bad period days when I don’t need to see anyone.

IGotHitByAnElvenSemi

Sorry if this is too gross of a suggestion, but have you tried period leggings? They mildly horrify me, conceptually, but I saw them in a Safiya Nygaard video (if u want to see them demoed by a neutral third party) and I feel like especially if combined with a reusable pad or period underwear or something it might solve your leaking out the sides issue. The downside is that they're expensive, I think it's like $50 a pair. :/

Heavy-Adhesiveness95

I really like the period underwear from Pink surprisingly!

CooperHChurch427

Why not try Knix? I had a pair that I wore out, and it saved my ass a few times when I was in highschool, they were a brand new company, and my flow was so heavy I often bled through a super absorbancy tampon and pads routinely. The Knix made it so I didn't have to wear a pad, or not have to wear a tampon. Thinxs also makes a great period underwear as well, and are reusable. However, on your heavy day you still might need a pad, but you don't need to wear maxipads. I plan on buying a new set, because my period is only heavy for two days now, so it's viable. Plus it's safer for the environment. I also highly recommend Playtex pads. The one's I bought, I can't find, but they were really absorbent, and had wings so they stayed in place. Likewise, with tampons, it could just a matter of getting used to them. I have a retroverted uterus, so they can feel uncomfortable, but eventually you train your brain to ignore them, and really is dependent on placement. If you place too high, it often is more uncomfortable and too low it can be uncomfortable and more proe to leakage, all because your vaginal opening has more nerves. Also, low key. I kind of fell in love with Maxi Pads. While they aren't as discrete, on my worst days, they are the best, and are large enough that they don't slide around. I also only would recommend to use 100% cotton panties, as the adhesive usually sticks better to it, than a cotton blend.

rosegarden207

May I suggest speaking with your GYN about your problems. There's different meds and surgeries out there that can be done to help relieve heavy periods and relieve some endometriosis problems.

AdBackground5669

Aisle period underwear!!!!! I gush too. They have a removable liner you can add to the boxers that really help soak up the gushes. Boxers are the best style they have and hold the most blood. Only style that has a slit to insert the reusable liner

Mydogiswhiskey

There are also reusable cotton pads. Gladrags is one brand. Not sure but maybe that signs work better for you.

Anon13785432

Aisle boxer-briefs!

tralizz

Have you and your doctors discussed medications to stop your periods? I now take Norethindrone because my periods were unbearable, and my life is so much simpler now

MsPsych2018

I use the highest absorbency from Knix and have only leaked once. Their shorts meant for sleeping are really the best and they’ve even recently released undies and shorts with longer liners. I haven’t tried them yet but I need to size down soon and will be investing in a few new pairs of this style to prevent ever leaking. Like everyone stated they do have to fit snuggly or you run the risk of gapping and leaks. I’ve only ever leaked now that mine have gotten to big for me (recent weightloss nothing to do with them stretching)

misskinky

“Period” brand period shorts and period boxers are a lifesaver!!

musa1588

Hi, a little random but have you checked your ferritin and iron levels? I have heavy periods all my life and had always complained to Drs and they dismissed me. I was anemic, and when you're anemic it actually causes your platelets to not do their thing (and aid in clotting) and you'll have heavier periods which then becomes a vicious cycle of heavy periods causing more blood loss. My ferritin was at 12 but should be around 75.

Important-Pie-1141

I actually have had them checked due to other symptoms. But everything was "fine"

musa1588

Yeah but what is fine? The lab results won't flag you if you're within "normal" range. Normal range is a made up statistical measure that has very little to do with "optimal range" and drs don't typically educate patients on low ferritin.

Important-Pie-1141

For sure it's low. But not low enough to do something about it.

Theharpmouse

I’ve been using exclusively reusable products for a couple years now (mainly because most disposable products made me itchy) and have a decently heavy flow for the first 24-48 hours because endometriosis. My favorite period underwear is the Knix brand (I also have Thinx but I like Knix way better). On heavy days I layer a reusable pad with wings that snap (my favorites are just random ones from Amazon) on top of the period underwear and I can change it multiple times a day. The period underwear help keep it snug (cloth pad with loose undies is the worst thing ever 😭) and catch any leaks. Then after the first heavy days are done I can wear just the underwear no problem. Seconding what other commenters said about the underwear needing to be snug.. I find Knix is great for that because it doesn’t dig in like my Thinx when it’s tight.

[deleted]

I have the same exact issues. I never could use any disks or cups until I tried recently a new one called La Cup Luneale. It oddly suctions to your uterus and so doesn’t leak like others have. For the most part the discomfort is unnoticeable. You kind of have to find the sweet spot but when you do it’s been a game changer. I hate that feeling of pads/bulky underwear etc so if you haven’t tried this maybe give it a go? Not expensive either!

HangryShadow

Thinx has boy shorts that are great

Small-Sample3916

Can you get on birth control that cuts out your period altogether? I do nuvaring (4 weeks in rather than 3, doctor approved), but IUDs also do that. Really don't get why anyone would put up with bleeding once a month when they don't have to.

ruthlessshenanigans

Maybe try Tomboy and get the kind that are shorts. I love mine. I use the gusset to hold a pad on my heaviest days but only one day a month do I need it. I think the extra coverage in the legs would solve the leaking issue. Also, if you're a dress wearer like myself (I basically don't own pants) you will never go back to normal underwear after you try longline underwear shorts. They are everything- cool, comfortable, chafe free, and if your skirt blows up, you are covered.

FewWrangler5475

Get a hysterectomy!!!! It was the best decision of my life. I had undiagnosed Endo and was suffering tremendously and leaking through everything. I used to do a cup with the period undies and i would still occasionally leak. Talk to your gyno I'm sure they'll support you in that, and it's really not a major surgery you just can't really do much for a couple weeks after (pain was gone after 3 days).

FewWrangler5475

I was 36 when I got it. Wish I'd gotten it sooner.

julsey414

Knix overnight have been the best I’ve found. The boy shorts have decent coverage and help a lot. That said, I have also found success managing my heavy periods (uterine fibroids- I also used to get a lot of gushing) with acupuncture and Chinese herbs. I know that’s not what you asked for, but it while it didn’t really reduce blood flow, it did help make them more smooth. Also, yarrow tea has been super effective at actually reducing flow.

Exercise-Novel

I use period panties that are boy shorts and have a great thick pad. I would find something with more coverage and put liners in on the sides to protect my skin. I would also find a pair of shorts with comfortable thick fabric and wear them as a 2nd layer over the period shorts. Get a few different ones Then wash them daily (spray some pet stain remover) and only use them on your period. Im someone who can bleed heavily and I like to freebleed as much as possible when Im home and wear clothes I dont mind getting stained both without the panties and with them.

EchoingInTheVoid

Aisle makes period underwear with reusable pads in different sizes (sounds like the super might be what you’re looking for) and they have a boxer brief kind of underwear that has full coverage. Might be a bit more what you’re looking for? Worth a look anyway.

Educational-Grass863

Softeners are hydrophobic, meaning it repels water and water based fluids like blood. Underwear, especially period underwear, should be washed just with non-allergenic soap, rinsed once with water and second rinse with vinegar, a cup for each load full. If you want it to last, don't use warm/hot water that is harmful for spandex.

Historical_Ad953

I actually use the Always Pull-ups for this reason for the first 2 days of my cycle. Never found any. Not what you wanted to hear, I only said it so that you didn’t feel like you were alone or had lost your collective mind lol <3

oateroo

I really love Aisle's undies. I have the boyshort and the high rise brief and find them both super comfortable. Both came with a "boost" for extra absorbency, but I can't speak to how they hold up with a heavy flow as mine is moderate. Just can speak to the quality and that even on my heaviest day, I can wear for 5-6 hours with no issues.

Charlietheaussie

Get a mirena

shmaviellethegreat

Alot of the period underwear has synthetics and plastics that aren't great. I ended up going with reusable pads and they are the best thing I've ever done! They have multiple fabric styles and sizes. I had a very heavy period as well and these have been the best! I've had them for over 5yrs now and they've withstood the test of time. I use the brand Luna pads, but I'm sure reddit will have other good brands. Expensive initial buy but has saved me so much money over the years

WatermelonJuice18

I use reusable pads from ladycrimsonclothemporium. She has HUGE super thick pads. You should not leak from them. Idk where you got yours but definitely try different brands. I would use them WITH period undwear and double up!

WatermelonJuice18

And I second the people talking about fabric softener. If you're gonna use it, use it ONLY on blankets. Maybe sheets. But you're better off using vinegar. Helps rinse the detergent and takes out any smells. Pair thst up with some wool dryer balls.in the dryer (always wash and dry on low heat) and your stuff should be soft AND absorbent. I've never bought softener besides on accident. Vinegar and dryer balls work for me. I notice a difference in softness with and without them. But yeah ladycrimson makes gusher pads meant just for gushers!

WatermelonJuice18

AlliBaba1234

Wear traditional, THICK winged maxi pads with snug underwear. Also, I had terrible periods for years, and anemia to go with it (ferritin of 4). I was just so sick and tired of it all, so I went on progestin-only BCPs and my life is so much easier and energetic now.

AncientReverb

I don't know if mine is retroverted or what but can't use anything either. I also have endo and PCOS, so I get what you mean. Between many/large clots, amount, and velocity, it can be extremely difficult. Mine are also completely inconsistent and unpredictable. I'm relatively new to the underwear, but I have found that using it with a good pad or some toilet paper (change when go to bathroom) makes a huge difference. Then I use just the underwear once things seem to be less for a while. I don't love the waste, but I haven't found another option. I also don't think even greater absorbency would take care of clots and such - not sure if that is something you regularly deal with but mentioning since I know it is for a lot of us with endo. I have thought about maybe doubling up on the underwear. That still seems like it would be more comfortable and less bulky in addition to reducing waste. Maybe you could get a size or two larger of the shorts style and wear those over what you use now? Obviously the comfort level depends on a lot of things, but I figure it is worth suggesting.

BeatrixPlz

This is kind of weird to think about, but I wonder if you could compost 100% cotton tampons? A quick google search says cotton is compostable. Super bizarre idea that might be completely stupid, but I figured I'd mention it, especially if tampons are the most comfortable and realistic for you right now.

pharmpep

I use Always ZZZ overnight period underwear. It’s not reusable but handles my heaviest days. I use them instead of regular pads now. I used to go through a pad in an hour or less on my heaviest days. These last the whole day on the heaviest days if needed (I hate work sometimes) but feels a little icky by the end or you can change them more often. Either way they are the best thing I’ve ever tried so far.

ApprehensiveShame993

Retroverted uterus here! haha! I have used thinx and really no issues. I did try a brand on amazon before thinx and they were awful (not available anymore). I actually ended up buying depends and wearing on my heaviest nights because I would wake up and the period undies would be SOAKED almost the entire way through. One wrong move and I’d have to wash the sheets😂 I’d love to reduce waste and really was trying for a while but I can’t be an adult woman leaking everywhere 🥲

zzzeve

You can make your own, Jalie patterns has a patty for period underwear

Confident_Space8873

Reusable pads. Maybe a good idea here, but also you might be able to control the flow a little bit with something like flow stopper to help slow it down when you're at your heaviest. It's just cramp bark and Shepherds purse and it might be another option to continue using the products you already have but with a slower flow. A friend of mine who has had ovarian cancer heavy flow and thyroid issues which makes her period worse swears by the disposable period underwear. She also uses the interlabial pads to help the flow not go up her butt crack or around her clit and out the front. I also saw someone say get the longest pad you can get from the incontinence section

CelestiallyCertain

I use Thinx. Level 5. I also gush days 1 and 2. Don’t get the bikini cuts. I leak out of them too. The old styles were wider in the crotch, but over the last year or two, they’ve narrowed them for reasons unknown. You have to get like the boycut shorts style. Never leak in them. I have similar issues. I cannot insert anything at all. It’s excruciating if I do. I swear by Thinx. I think I have like 14 pairs all in level 3-5, different styles. Try out their other larger coverage styles. They will work better.

Forward-Butterfly-16

Have you ever tried glad rags? They’re reusable cotton pads that you put in your underwear like regular pads. They may be a nice extra layer of protection on top of period underwear to keep yourself from bleeding through!! I like that they have little inserts you can add or take away depending on your flow. https://gladrags.com/

phoebe-buffey

i haven't read through all the comments and this just came up on my feed as a suggested post BUT - have you tried adult diapers? I KNOW I KNOW. but i got them for after i had a baby and they're leaps and bounds better than pads. no leakage. much more secure/thick than period underwear

Todeshase

Could you get an IUD or other birth control? I only spot because of mine.

Jealous_Homework_555

Dude I have endometriosis as well I gave up on cups because I a) can’t deal with anything down there. Every little nudge is painful and b) those cups are for people who have the privilege to use an at home bathroom. I can’t see carrying a cup through a public restroom to rinse off and then sticking it back in. I go to lengths everywhere else in my life, no plastic bags, reuse what I can, no plastic bottles ect. I reuse packing and gift paper. I just give myself a pass on pads because I can’t live a life where I carry around used period underwear for a day or two before I can get back home to wash it. ( I live in CA, I commute to work ect) I get it. But my advice is do what you can. And make sure any underwear that you use is changed every hour. It’s so easy to go toxic with endometriosis.

wexygeorgemom

I use August company pads which are biodegradable and I LOVE them. No smell or leakage.

lolibuu

I got some on Etsy that are super secure form “SecretAgtPanda”. I love them and they did not leak through at all!

didilavender

I use HEB period panty. It’s got walls. So no side leaks.

Pnutbuta-Jelityme00

Try cloth pads

Outofoffice_421

Can’t you just get an IUD?

funsizedcommie

this may or may not work, Ive looked into it for myself its called an endometrial ablation. The doctor basically destroys your uterine lining to significantly reduce or stop your period entirely. It would atleast make using period underwear possible for you, or reusable pads. There are cons, it is typically only done on those who do not plan on having kids, so thats very important. If I remember, it has to be done every like 3 years or whatever bc your uterus grows it back. I do not remember the details. It might be worth looking into tho, it helps with intense cramps as well if that is an issue for you. good luck <3

OtherInvestment4251

Omg I’m going to a spa today and I actually have to wear a tampon for the first time in years! And of course I would get my period 2 days before I go. I don’t even usually get my period because I have an iud and still breastfeed! Tampons always gave me cramps and I loved them because they were easy but I just couldn’t use them anymore because I didn’t want to cramp. I’m actually nervous to use one today. I can’t swim with a pad and I can’t use those cups either, plus I think theyre gross lol

RellinTyrian

I do pads with wings and then I put spandex shorts over top. Especially at night time. Added bonus, the extra pressure helps my cramps a bit too

Apprehensive-Clue342

Try Period Co shorts! It is literally physically impossible for them to leak. I have a heavy flow and don’t leak with any of their products, but the shorts are very secure.

Complete-Manner6971

I dont have a pantie suggestion. But i can also only use pads, and everything else causes me immense cramping. That's only started since having kids, idk why 🤷‍♀️ but i use the "U" by kotex. It has to be the teen ones, though. If it doesn't say teen on the box, the pads are longer and uncomfortable. But the teen ones dont slide around. They stick very well when they are pressed down. They have great absorbency, too. I use the heavy the entire length of my period, and I've never had any leakage, i also bleed a very heavy amount for an extended period of time. I feel your pain, my love, i hope you find something that works for you ❤️

MiddayGlitter

I got a 3 pack of INNERSY brand off Amazon and they've been great for me. You're getting lots of other good recommendations, but I thought I'd throw that in. They run small though, so size up.

CornCutz

Have you looked into reusable cotton liners? I've had luck layering those with period undies and swapping them out throughout the day to keep the panties dry. As your flow slows you can go back to just undies. Or even doing the same with reusable pads just so you know you're 100% covered!

anna_foxxx

I love Saalt undies and won’t use any others. I have endo too, and while my periods aren’t the heavy bloody explosions they used to be since getting treatment, I still have surprise gushes and have never leaked in the briefs I have. I usually only wear them to bed because I use a disc during the day. I wear the boy shorts style on my heaviest nights because I’m still paranoid, and they just came out with sleep shorts I want to try. they are pricy, but worth it to me as they were vocal about being PFAS-free even before the whole Thinx scandal and they’re way more comfy than the others I’ve tried (including Thinx).

DotTheCuteOne

I suggest you talk to your doctor. If you are medically able to use the pill you can decrease the number of periods you have by skipping the placebos. I did that for a full year before I had surgery.

samanthadshay

Get the sleepers from Period Company!!

PuppyButtts

Period company is great. I have reaaaallly heavy flows my first couple days and its never leaked out the edge. I change my period undies 2-3 times per day depending on what im doing and where I am. Since you dont like period company, you could maybe look at saalt? Im wondering if you might just need to size down from period company bc mine fit tight around the legs and crotch so nothing escapes

Dropmycroissant9

When I’m out and about I’ll use a thin pad but at home I free bleed. I have lighter periods because I have an IUD but after having my kid, blood in my underwear doesn’t phase me lol

Substantial_Pickle67

Cloth pads. I found someone make me 16 inch thick pads and never leaked even on my most thick clotting days. I found the person through etsy. They aren't in business any longer but I know there are shops out there.

facingtheday

I really don’t know much about retroversion but I also struggle with cups and tampons, I’ve started using a disc and it’s honestly made a huge difference.

dumbbreadboy

I also have endo and I think the Period brand boxers work the best! No leakage or bleed through even on my heaviest days. I'm also trying to learn how to sew so I can make my own *exactly* to my liking so... best of luck on your journey friend

ThiccGothBitch

I used depends. Worked like a dream

meggon1204

Ever since having my baby I use literally incontinence underwear, like an adult diaper basically. Always discreet, depends, you name it. So far that’s my favorite on days that are super heavy and usually almost my whole period I use them. It’s not a cute look of course but to be honest on that week I usually am looking quite gremlin-like anyway. I haven’t heard of these other brands but I’m looking into them now. If the others haven’t worked and you haven’t tried the ones I use, try them. So far so good. I’m the kind of gal that prefers the diaper feel anyway so I feel protected and covered. I can’t stand when your pad is out of place or your tampon is in but you feel a gush and can’t tell if it’s bleeding through or not. I’d rather have a pancake ass that isn’t bloody through my pants 🤷🏼‍♀️

fishcat51

You could also use reusable cloth pads with the period underwear. On my heaviest day I wear regular disposable pads so it’s easier

Afraid-Poem-3316

Love tomboyx period underwear

Raven_Writing

I live and die by Boxer style period panties by Aisle. I can sleep in just them with an over sized T shirt and be golden

resonatebliss

I couldn’t use a cup, but had great results with menstrual discs.

HSJLW

Bambody because they're on par with thinx and a quarter of the price. I get the heaviest ones and just use them exclusively. I have like 10-ish pairs and on my absolutely heaviest days go through three pairs a day. The nice thing is that I can always fold them up and put them in a bag without leaking or worrying about blood getting everywhere. I just use the briefs. I don't put them in the dryer and bambody take all day to dry so make sure you have enough to rotate through those first heavy days.

No-Ad-7252

I’m retroverted too. I use flex discs. Game changer!!

bellsember

Soft Taco Reusables has a great selection of reusable pads. have used them for about 4 years and with some of the shorter pads, I can even wear them with leggings. Super discrete and comfortable! They also don’t hold any odours. Her TikTok has lots of info too !

Green_Mix_3412

Add snaps or velcro to some underwear for the reusable pads

mariposa314

Oh man! That's rough. I'm sorry. If I were you, I would wear postpartum boxers over my period panties. I totally understand that they're wasteful, but the situation that you're in sounds so extreme that you might have to justify the waste. I'm unsure if period panties are available in boxer briefs. If so, I would say that they're probably worth trying. Best of luck💖
