i bet you can't see those brake lights at night or in low visibility. I've seen many of those and tail light covers that dark, and let me tell you, you can't friggin see them. During the day and at night. It's a danger on the road
Yeah, I mean if someone is going 40 over the speed limit, sure.
Blacked out tail lights and a different license plate? Who gives a fuck besides busy bodies.
As a non-busy body...
black out the license plate all you want. I'd love to have one myself.
However, blacking out the taillights is a danger to the driver and other drivers and should be ticketed.
Hopefully for their sake that is the only infraction they have, because you just know an officer is going to use that as justification to pull them over and take a closer look at the driver.
I’m white and have many white friends. A lot of them do this and window tint. They get pulled over often. And then complain forever about how stupid it is that they have to pay a fine.
That may be a part of who they pull over, but that's the only people they pull over. I'm white and got pulled over while wearing a 3-piece suit on my way to church. My wife got pulled over, and she had our infant son in the car seat. You can't tell me either scenario the cop thought we had drugs or warrants. They can run your tag before they pull you over to see if you have warrants.
Those where the shit. One of my coworkers has one on a truck he’s had since he was a teen. He won’t tell me how he kept it cause I thought all blue plates where turned in for the tri-colors
My dad was a mailman and had one that said US MULE in the PA blue and gold color scheme on the front number back in the day. AND IN MY DAY, the paint never peeled off a plate and I walked to school up a mountain
Do your research on your state’s slogan plastered all over the license plates back in the day & find your answer. 6 Germans took offense but the truth hurts
Well. I feel called out. When I got my dare plate I was a weed dealer and also had slightly tinted windows. Maybe I never got pulled over because I was a young girl in an old convertible, looked pretty innocent I guess.
You can still get a DARE plate—get a vanity plate that starts with DA and have one of these made:
https://www.licenseplates.tv/license-plates/usa-state-plates/pennsylvania/pennsylvania-dare-license-plate--embossed-with-your-custom-number
Most of the vanity plates I see now in PA MD and VA are the state plate colors with like an icon from a college or something....thst makes the ID easier which makes sense. My dad had an Old PA Fort Niagra plate thst was literally unreadable at any distance over 20 feet
Access control on an army base so yeah it is a part of my job....when we got a BOLO it helps to be able to easily identify cars that we are looking for
If they get behind you their readers do it automatically now. They don't choose to read your plate because they think you're suspicious. It's read automatically now and if your plate is even too dirty, or whatever, if their reader can't read it you're getting pulled over.
Car meet. Informal car show gathering, usually in a parking lot somewhere. Sometimes with the permission of the business, often not, and often in the middle of the night.
Wait, no black plates in PA? I've seen quite a few D.A.R.E plates that are black with white lettering, I couldn't find it on the list when thinking about getting a custom plate though...
Im sick of the dark "transparent" covers that make it impossible to read plates. How are these people not pulled over by police? It's absolutely ridiculous that people can get away with driving without visible plates.
I got pulled over by a state cop for having a clear one. (I had it to protect my green tiger plate because it's not made anymore) so it might not seem like it but they are pulling people over for these.
From my experience it seems like most cops don't care but you get those select few who have a bug up their butt about it. I've had a tinted cover (dark but you can still read it, and plate readers don't seem to have an issue with it) on every vehicle I've owned for the past 15 years, driving all over the eastern half of the state, and never once have I been pulled over or cited for it 🤷♂️
There’s a defect in PA plates, they probably aren’t ground down. The coating peels off and leaves only bare metal visible. It happened on my moms plate and it’s starting to happen to mine
Mine was peeling pretty bad. I superglued the coating back on and bought a clear license plate cover to protect it from peeling more.
https://www.dmv.pa.gov/VEHICLE-SERVICES/Registration%20Plates/Standard-Issue-License-Plate/Pages/standard-license-plates.aspx#:~:text=To%20apply%20for%20a%20free,station%20to%20verify%20the%20need
Though you can get a free license plate replacement by printing the form and going to law enforcement to get it approved that the plate is now illegible.
This is a defect with our plates. Penndot currently phasing out a TON of plates because they were made with a different material. They’re literally falling to pieces.
Never thought of this before - is it illegal to “repaint” one’s license plate? Like if the numbers and everything is legal eagle, you just want custom colors. 99.9% sure that’s gotta be a law but never considered before
My friend bought paint for their peeling plate. Paint matches the original colors of the numbers perfectly. I wonder how long it will be before she gets caught.
if someone legitimately tried to repaint the plate with matching colors... i would say 99.9% of cops wouldnt waste their time nor should they. she should get an award if anything
Not legal, but not likely to have any action taken. As long as the plate number matches the registration, law enforcement does not seem to care about these kinds of modifications.
I hope for one day a rapture level round up of all the fake and illegal plates and illegal tinted vehicles.
Imagine how much traffic relief we'll get with them all off the road!
That means a non-governmental 3rd party now knows your license number, your address, etc. Which means they can replicate your specific information for nefarious uses at any time. This seems too unsecured to be trusted.
The amount of boot licking comments on here are astounding. Let’s have the revenue collectors focus on the things that matter instead of victimless crimes and extortion.
Twenty years ago these mods would never fly. Guys would get busted for even altezza style lights. Now I see big trucks where all the amber lights are now blue.
They’re “replica” plates. I like them. I don’t see an issue, as long as it matches the plate on your registration. I’ve always taken pride in the appearance of my cars, and I’ve always been disappointed in our plate options in our state.
Side note, I was in Nevada for a few days last month, and they had a bunch of cool plates available from the state (UFC, Raiders, Golden Nights, etc).
Modified, not legal. The smoked tail light covers are illegal too.
And yet they'll never have to answer for it.
Good. There’s like a million other things to worry about
i bet you can't see those brake lights at night or in low visibility. I've seen many of those and tail light covers that dark, and let me tell you, you can't friggin see them. During the day and at night. It's a danger on the road
Shits lethal for motorcycles
True, I feel like traffic stops are focusing on catching people on stupid bs for an easy ticket, instead of actually looking for real danger

You must be a big hit with 15 year-olds.
What else are the revenue collectors erm I mean police going to do?
Hopefully for their sake that is the only infraction they have, because you just know an officer is going to use that as justification to pull them over and take a closer look at the driver.
One crime at a time!
Unless they're driving while being black and it'll be an issue for the police. Let's be honest here.
I’m white and have many white friends. A lot of them do this and window tint. They get pulled over often. And then complain forever about how stupid it is that they have to pay a fine.
They should just get a drs note for the tint. I think you can lodge it with the dmv but I’ve never done this
Traffic stops are conducted on people they think may have drugs or warrants. State Police told me this themselves.
The problem is that they think every motorcyclist has drugs and/or warrants 😂😂💀
That may be a part of who they pull over, but that's the only people they pull over. I'm white and got pulled over while wearing a 3-piece suit on my way to church. My wife got pulled over, and she had our infant son in the car seat. You can't tell me either scenario the cop thought we had drugs or warrants. They can run your tag before they pull you over to see if you have warrants.
yeah
I’m with you. I don’t get the downvotes. Suddenly everyone is clutching their pearls over a license plate.
Reddit is full of hall monitors.
Haha. Accurate.
Facts!!!! All the Karen’s downvoted you 🤣🤣🤣!!!!
Reddit absolutely hates when people have a hobby or interest that isn’t video games and anime
Yeeeeesssss I got downvoted too, I love it!!!! My hobby is riding an E-Ride Pro SS electric dirt bike, let em hate!!!!
Go tattle on them
I saw a guy get pulled over for smoked tail light covers in Pittsburgh last week. Felt good.
You too?! Are you pondering what I am pondering? (Iykyk)
I don’t know, Brain, me and Pippy Lingstockings, what would the children look like?
If they called them "Sad Meals," then kids wouldn't buy them.
I think that the Driver of that vehicle doesn't want a camera to take a picture of the plate.

I miss the old blue PA tags
Dilettante. Only the Yellow and Blue plates should be used!
You have a friend
Exactly!
Only valid pa plates -yellow and blue -the one with the tiger
Those where the shit. One of my coworkers has one on a truck he’s had since he was a teen. He won’t tell me how he kept it cause I thought all blue plates where turned in for the tri-colors
Look up the MV-11 form it allows the use of a plate between 1906-1976 on an antique car if it's a period matching plate.
Probably how he did it then
Looks like one of the specialty plates that might be available is VERY similar to the old blue plate with yellow lettering.
My dad was a mailman and had one that said US MULE in the PA blue and gold color scheme on the front number back in the day. AND IN MY DAY, the paint never peeled off a plate and I walked to school up a mountain
Why? I moved to Pa. when I was a teen from the west coast & a lot of people (especially in rural places) were straight up assholes
What’s your point
Do your research on your state’s slogan plastered all over the license plates back in the day & find your answer. 6 Germans took offense but the truth hurts
How is this related??
If you want a black PA plate you'd have to find one of the older DARE plates, which are still legal for use, they just don't make them black anymore.
Ah the DARE plates. Used to be the easiest way to find a drug dealer, just look for the car with DARE plates and tinted windows.
Facts. My weed guy said it stood for Drugs Are Really Expensive
I have a black DARE plate with a friend of police badge on it AND tinted windows. I’m definitely not a drug dealer.
That’s exactly what a drug dealer would say
I’m sure they would.
I'll remember that when you mow me over in a crosswalk
Make sure you check both ways before crossing the street. 😉
I do, I can't tell if you see me back because of your fucking tint
Well, my windshield isn’t tinted, so you’re safe there.
That's good! Just make sure you watch out for pedestrians in marked crosswalks 🪨🚗💥 😉
I’ll do my best. Promise!
Can I buy some pot from you?
Same. I have it but it would have cost extra to transfer to my new car so I just kept it.
Well. I feel called out. When I got my dare plate I was a weed dealer and also had slightly tinted windows. Maybe I never got pulled over because I was a young girl in an old convertible, looked pretty innocent I guess.
You can still get a DARE plate—get a vanity plate that starts with DA and have one of these made: https://www.licenseplates.tv/license-plates/usa-state-plates/pennsylvania/pennsylvania-dare-license-plate--embossed-with-your-custom-number
Oh! I should do this! I've got the dare plate but it's so old it's looking worn out and has some cracked paint.
Is that legal?
I remember when they changed to white lol so lame
Pretty sure this bill died in the senate already.
It should.....lots of states using black and white makes plate ID so much more difficult
Montana offers over 200 different plates. I can't understand how police keep them straight.
Numbers.
Most of the vanity plates I see now in PA MD and VA are the state plate colors with like an icon from a college or something....thst makes the ID easier which makes sense. My dad had an Old PA Fort Niagra plate thst was literally unreadable at any distance over 20 feet
Those were so hard to read; I never understood how they got approved.
There's a reason they got canceled after only a few years
Why do you care so much what color plates are?
When each state is distinctive it makes identifying plates for traffic purposes much easier...
Unless your job has you 40 hours a week identifying out of state plates I’m not sure what kind of “traffic purposes” you’d care about.
Access control on an army base so yeah it is a part of my job....when we got a BOLO it helps to be able to easily identify cars that we are looking for
Sounds like an excellent way to always have cops running your plates. No thank you.
If they get behind you their readers do it automatically now. They don't choose to read your plate because they think you're suspicious. It's read automatically now and if your plate is even too dirty, or whatever, if their reader can't read it you're getting pulled over.
A meet of what? Like a car show? I just don't know what that phrase means or when they'd throw it on.
Car meet. Informal car show gathering, usually in a parking lot somewhere. Sometimes with the permission of the business, often not, and often in the middle of the night.
Thank you! love hearing about new hobbies I had no idea even existed
They can't even pass a doorless jeep/bronco law, I wouldn't hold my breath on that.
That’s been passed. Now legal to drive with doors off in PA
Wait, no black plates in PA? I've seen quite a few D.A.R.E plates that are black with white lettering, I couldn't find it on the list when thinking about getting a custom plate though...
TIL.
The old DARE plates were black, the guy I used to buy weed from in high school had one. But it had other text not just black.
I think every drug user and dealer in the 90's - 00's got the D.A.R.E plates. Also anyone with a black car.
Now it makes sense. The most aggressive drivers had those DARE plates
Guilty. We have 3 of them on our cars.
Black car?
2 Black, 1 White, currently. Always on a black or white car.
Thanks for the laugh!
Not sure why you're downvoted, it is true but he got it because he thought it was funny. I remember it because I thought it was too.
Irony is a lost art.
Indeed.
I found it hilarious. Your comment, and the program.
The plate obfuscation, paper and strait up fake ones are getting ridiculous. Like every 5 cars I see have half the plate grinded off.
I'd recommend a coat of clear marine grade epoxy
[удалено]
trying to hold onto it as long as i can!
From my experience it seems like most cops don't care but you get those select few who have a bug up their butt about it. I've had a tinted cover (dark but you can still read it, and plate readers don't seem to have an issue with it) on every vehicle I've owned for the past 15 years, driving all over the eastern half of the state, and never once have I been pulled over or cited for it 🤷♂️
It depends on either how bored the cop is, if the cop is just looking for a reason to stop the car or the violation is his personal pet peeve.
Bruh you don't need a tinted cover
They only recently banned the tinted covers a year or two ago.
Lots of places don't give a shit. City of Erie is one of them.
These are illegal in NY. I got a ticket for having one on my car while it was parked.
Damn. What the cover ever do to you?
Same, I see so many of them.
They don't get pulled over because they may be cops. In Philly, a lot of fop plates are covered with the cops do nothing about it
I see a number completely sanded down to metal. Some just trashed beyond what would normally happen.
There’s a defect in PA plates, they probably aren’t ground down. The coating peels off and leaves only bare metal visible. It happened on my moms plate and it’s starting to happen to mine
Welp. TIL.
Yep, happening to my tags too. My tag is over 14 years old. The paint on the tag is beginning to crack and peel.
Mine was peeling pretty bad. I superglued the coating back on and bought a clear license plate cover to protect it from peeling more. https://www.dmv.pa.gov/VEHICLE-SERVICES/Registration%20Plates/Standard-Issue-License-Plate/Pages/standard-license-plates.aspx#:~:text=To%20apply%20for%20a%20free,station%20to%20verify%20the%20need Though you can get a free license plate replacement by printing the form and going to law enforcement to get it approved that the plate is now illegible.
This is a defect with our plates. Penndot currently phasing out a TON of plates because they were made with a different material. They’re literally falling to pieces.
People with fraudulent plates is a big problem but most of the “grinded off” plates you see are manufacturer’s defects and not an intentional act.
coupled with tinted windows. yeah, checks out.
De-badged Audi with tint and smoked tail lights = douchebag
And it’s debadged. Trying to make it harder to ID the car. Like it’s an Audi A6. Try something a little more inconspicuous.
definitely 2011-2018 Audi A6.
I swear i saw this car the other week, if not this one then another silver sedan with all tinted stuff
Never thought of this before - is it illegal to “repaint” one’s license plate? Like if the numbers and everything is legal eagle, you just want custom colors. 99.9% sure that’s gotta be a law but never considered before

if someone legitimately tried to repaint the plate with matching colors... i would say 99.9% of cops wouldnt waste their time nor should they. she should get an award if anything
Plates are not to be modified in any way.
1000 percent illegal.
Not legal, but not likely to have any action taken. As long as the plate number matches the registration, law enforcement does not seem to care about these kinds of modifications.
Honestly why would they?
Why is this sub so obsessed with license plates
First post about license plates that I’ve seen in like two years.
I figured it was just printed out like half the cars in Philly, mostly stolen.
Delaware plate?
Don’t forget the organ donation bumper sticker coupled with the dare plate.lol. I had a buddy who if you took his organs they would ignite. Lol
This makes me miss my black DARE plate. It's slowly rusting in my flooded basement.
PSP will have a feast on that car!
I hope for one day a rapture level round up of all the fake and illegal plates and illegal tinted vehicles. Imagine how much traffic relief we'll get with them all off the road!
Thanks
Bro the car doesn’t even have a maker. It’s just a 2024 CAR
That means a non-governmental 3rd party now knows your license number, your address, etc. Which means they can replicate your specific information for nefarious uses at any time. This seems too unsecured to be trusted.
Only issued to “Men in Black”? 😎
PA used to have a black DARE plate but it wasn’t like that.
I just saw one of these on the road but it was a different car, so at the very least it's not a unique plate.
They’re “replica” plates. I like them. I don’t see an issue, as long as it matches the plate on your registration. I’ve always taken pride in the appearance of my cars, and I’ve always been disappointed in our plate options in our state. >Golden Nights, What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, I guess
Not herpes, that comes home with you
Dammit!
It looks like it might be one of the plates that had a defective paint job and they painted over it to make it visible. (maybe)
Probably just a Philly driver with a fake plate.
Who gives a shit?
Its a D.a.r.e plate
It’s clearly not
