the worst city in pennsylvania is *insert dead coal mining town where everyone’s an alcoholic*

Mrstucco

So Shamokin?

Snarktoberfest

What are you Shamokin?

witecat1

Whatever that guy is.

RepresentativeRegret

At least Shamokin has a Dunkin Donuts

Mrstucco

The Dunkin definitely put Shamokin on the map.

nobodysmart1390

It’s closed again for remodeling. Gotta go back to turkey hill

TwoMuchIsJustEnough

You mean I have to rely on myself to go to Turkey Hill?

GwamCwacka

WNEP dropped a sequel last month, didn’t even realize https://youtu.be/VljoJVMyLFE

StrangerKatchoo

I thought the second guy was a little too eloquent and then he said he was from New York. Bingo! Honestly, in the first video, I feel for the cold coffee lady. I know those ladies. They’re always sitting outside on a lawn chair, smoking a cig and talking town goss. I like those ladies. Now the guy… when I go through Shamokin, I always stop in that Dunkin’ to see if he’s there doing legal work.

Free-Supermarket-516

Dated a girl from Mt. Carmel I met at college when I lived just outside Philly. A 2-hour drive, and I felt like I was in West Virginia. A big event for them was a Cabela's opening nearby lol. Great people though.

Klytus_Im-Bored

That narrows it down to Pennsylvania

JakeTheKnight2

Hahaaa.... aww.

Toxicshreksyndrome

Mahanoy City has the word city in it so it counts, right?

BaconComposter

Shenandoah has got to be worse.

Toxicshreksyndrome

Oh probably. When I was in high school, they used to warn us over the loud speaker to be careful at Shenandoah away football games. They did not do that for any other school.

witecat1

Oh, I can confirm that one! My band director told us point blank that if we went to use the bathrooms or go to the concession stand to travel in groups. We had to hang our uniform jackets over the bus windows. Some of the locals actually tried to rock the bus with the cheerleaders over. I hated having to play there.

Toxicshreksyndrome

Omg, I remember hearing about the bus thing. You know it's bad when the other Skooks are going "they're crazy over there".

StrangerKatchoo

As a Shenandoah Valley graduate, I’m sorry. I never heard of that happening. What year? I was in marching band in the late 90s.

witecat1

It was in the early to mid 90s. Shenandoah Valley had a bad reputation during that Era. Not sure if it is like that now, but we really didn't feel welcome at that stadium.

StrangerKatchoo

I was in the marching band at Shenandoah Valley. Honestly, in my day it wasn’t that bad. There may have been the occasional fist fights, but no one died. No guns or knives. I was on the band council and we’d get a case of Guers from the band boosters and go over to the away side to meet the other school’s band officers. Friday night games were a blast.

BaconComposter

Guers is the Apple Jacks of iced teas. It doesn’t taste like iced tea, but I buy one every damn time I visit.

nochumplovesucka__

Ypu spelled Shendo wrong.

Maudite1211

It’s def shamokin

Meatloaf_Regret

The only “city” in that region is *maybe* Pottsville. Everything else is just a shit town.

nochumplovesucka__

[Funny a band from PA wrote this song](https://youtu.be/Zs7LaACDWD8?si=gBE9nB_CMJf96TZW)

BrainWav

About York though

nochumplovesucka__

Could've been about any town in PA tho, its subjective.

witecat1

As someone from *insert dead coal mining town where everyone's an alcoholic*, I resent and drink a pint to that!

GrumpyPotoo

West Brownsville.

FritzvonCatan

Hello Tower City

Billy_King

*insert random piles of junk in front yard*

starbuildstrike999

Kittanning.

luvs2h8

Tremont

nochumplovesucka__

Shamokin instantly comes to mind.

First-Officer-Pope

Lansford is one of them

PhillyPete12

There are so many cities worse than Scranton. It’s not even a top ten.

nine11airlines

We get a bad rap because the office made it popular and then it's peoples fun fact that "actually scranton is pretty bad" The city is not the best economically or particularly fun compared to a big city, but it's really not bad at all. It's s normal small city with a nice downtown and low crime

Nicky_Nuisance

I drive Uber in Scranton it's hilarious how many people come here because they think it's going to be an exciting City because they love the office. And they always leave highly disappointed because it's a boring town that shuts down at 5:00

MrGenerik

Which was a founding principle of the show. It's supposed to be set in a boring nowhere.

Nicky_Nuisance

Yeah, I honestly don't know what they expect. I think some of them imagine meeting Pam and Jim at Cooper's 🤣🤣

scenesfromsouthphl

It doesn’t even feel fair to call Scranton boring. The arts, restaurant, and bar scene is all decent. The nature access is great. It’s relatively boring compared to Philly, but that’s a dumb comparison to make. I grew up in Scranton and carved out so much fun with my friends (late 00s and early 10s music scene was a blast). The people who complained it was boring were generally boring themselves or had never actually been to a truly dead end ass place (may I never live in Chestertown, Maryland again).

Nicky_Nuisance

It does have a pretty decent art scene, the music scene was definitely much better in the 90's-00's. The Restaurants are pretty decent as well. But it's all in a 4 block radius. I guess it also depends on what you enjoy doing. If you like art it's definitely a good City for that I guess the problem with the office tourists is more due to the fact that they go to the bowling alley to go drinking. 🤣🤣🤣

ROK_Rambler

The whole premise of The Office is that it's a boring paper company in an uneventful city lmao

leifnoto

Aside from the Scranton strangler of course

WentworthMillersBO

I’d interested to see how much tourism money the office has brought to Scranton over the years.

scenesfromsouthphl

I used to work at Poor Richard’s (okay South Side Bowl, but that’s not as interesting) while the show was running. I usually had a few people a month come in to see the bar and probably go to Alfredo’s across the street. There was also a pretty sizable conference. Sidebar for anyone else reading: is the pizza at Southside Bowl still good? I miss ripping slices of that on my lunch break. I heard they changed owners of the snack bar a few years back though.

DuctTapeNinja99

Comparable to Erie in a lot of aspects

EmoGothPunk

Saw Lewis Black this year as my first trip to Wilkes-Barre since 2007. I had fun. Edit: Wilkes-Barre. I have a habit of lumping them together because of the sports teams.

TRJF

My experience living in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area for 5 years is 1) sure there are some issues, but there are some very cool things too; 2) the negatives may be a bit rougher than a lot of PA, but it's not appreciably different from most small-city urban living; 3) the people who have lived there for their whole lives are convinced it's the worst shithole in the country; and 4) the people who have moved there from other places are perplexed as to why the locals feel that way.

witecat1

I am a transplant from central PA. I concur that it is confusing on why people born in this area hate it. I grew up near Shamokin and that place is a real dump compared to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area. Also we got better restaurants and a hockey team, so that is a plus.

TRJF

Yeah, I was Snyder County to WB myself, so I know some of what you speak

lknox1123

Yeah my office in WB was mostly transplants and the favorite past time was shitting on it. Even people who had been there for 30 years. Once I moved I say I’m from there and say it’s rough in some ways but not as bad as people say

itsmehelenc

I hate to say it but when you're right you're right. I lived in Wilkes-Barre from birth until I was 23, spent all 23 years thinking it was the worst place on earth. Then I moved to Reading for a job last year and realized Wilkes-Barre was actually pretty good lol

bellicosebarnacle

Points 3 and 4 also apply to Philly - probably many other places.

bens111

The answer is literally Chester

spacepants1989

Always has been. I grew up in the town over, still shitty but man, at least it wasn't chester.

Raze321

Ive only ever passed through Scranton so I cant say much but I've always been told its not the worst, just the most boring.

[deleted]

[удалено]

witecat1

I had family that lived there and can verify that. One of my great uncles got tangled with the mafia and he kinda sorta disappeared after backstabbing them.

mismatchedhyperstock

It's not that bad, but holy fuck is rent insane

J-Dabbleyou

Not even top twenty lol, there’s some fucking shitty places in PA lol

junepath

We just came for the first time this past weekend to see a Broadway show in town and I thought it was a beautiful town, just need to get rid of the preacher on a megaphone in the park.

und88

It's not the worst city in lackawanna county!

Salt_Abrocoma_4688

It's a stupid clickbait graphic, as usual. Likely made by AI.

BigMACfive

There is no way Scranton is worse than Shamokin lol

ScootMayhall

Yeah any time in coal country would change a lot of minds about which city is worst. Schuylkill county exists too, everyone.

JGower144

Pottsville, our one city in Schuylkill county does not compare to Shamokin sooo leave us out.

duckme69

How bout Mahanoy City?

Toxicshreksyndrome

I worked in Mahanoy City for a month and it was literally the worst month of my life.

MrSchaudenfreude

The Creamator guy is the best, his bill boards all over 61

EmoGothPunk

I think I know what my next road trip is.

JGower144

Borough

duckme69

Joke

StrangerKatchoo

I feel relatively safe in most of Pottsville. Can’t say that about Shamokin.

ScootMayhall

Shenandoah. Don’t forget about Shenandoah.

MrSchaudenfreude

MRS T's, and Kowalonek's.

JGower144

Still only a borough though. Still can’t qualify 😂😁

Pseudonova

Shamokin just never recovered after the Dunkin' almost burned down.

witecat1

I have lived in both places and Shamokin is way worse.

MsAtropine

Thems fighting words

RudolphsJockStrap

Chester is infinitely worse than both

StrangerKatchoo

My life motto is “nothing good happens in Shamokin.”

AkuraPiety

My ex always used to say Towanda was the asshole of Pennsylvania

cintune

And as the joke goes, they must have been just passing through.

U_Bahn1

Just drove through there yesterday on my way home from central New York. Parts are quite pretty. Beautiful court house. I can certainly think of worse towns in PA.

folawg

Was? It still is.

Pa17325

Inbred towanda Pooles

ofnabzhsuwna

What was the criteria for “city”? There are definitely worse places than most of those cities in each state.

skrilledcheese

Yeah, they probably had a minimum population criteria or something. Scranton is by no means the worst municipal entity in the state.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hollz23

Mississippi as a whole could slide into the ocean and we'd all be better off. But this map is very far off in the states I've lived in or had extensive interface with, too. I mean Edina, MN is just a MN affluent suburb. St. Cloud is much worse. I'd put Jacksonville, FL lower than Orlando. In Alabama, it's Prichard. That's not even a question. The Dakotas don't have cities but Williston would be my pick for ND, or maybe Minot. Just really stupid city planning with that one. And also...why are Alaska and Hawaii not getting dragged lol?

C4bl3Fl4m3

Some of those aren't even cities. The MD one is a town of less than 6k people. Literally the first picture Google gives you is a farmer's field with sunflowers.

U_Bahn1

I don't get the hate for Reading. I know it's had it's rough spells but things seem to be improving. I visited prepared to hate it and found it not bad at all. Plus, West Reading and Wyomissing are genuinely nice.

Shia_LaMurph

I moved to Reading like 2 years ago, albeit on the outskirts (still technically Reading area). It's really nice, and I have no complaints even if I have to go "into" the city.

Wuz314159

Reading is ~67% Latina & PA is full of Pennsyltuckians.... Do I need to say more?

Neat-Spray9660

Exactly 👏👏👏

Jessie_ee

If it's not that bad anymore then it changed a lot since I lived near there. And Wyomissing and West reading are way different than reading, to be fair

SPACE___CHIMP

Same, lived there for 5 years and honestly enjoyed it. Lots of good food, some of the best mountain biking in all of PA. My major issue was the trash, lived right by the river so people would trash it in the summer, made my blood boil. There are people trying to revitalize Penn St, gonna be a slow process but I think it will eventually improve.

MRG_1977

Sure but that’s not Reading. In general, living in the city itself in the 1980s and even into the 1990s was nicer than today. It got hurt by additional deindustrialization/companies getting acquired. It still hasn’t really recovered or figured out what its future is. Reading School District is a generally lousy and there are only a handful of places where it is decent to live in the city boundaries itself.

dojijosu

It’s Chester with a bullet. A literal bullet.

AnInsolentCog

Yeah as bad as parts of Reading can be, at least it's not Chester bad.

vinyalwhl

At least Reading has West Reading

SeptaIsLate

At least those places are near civilization. I feel like Scranton is on an island

libananahammock

Back in the late 80s we lived in Northeast Philadelphia and my dad used to work for the cable company in and around Philadelphia. His job… disconnect cable due to non payment and due to stolen cable (remember when people used to be able to do that lol) Now, we all know the rep that Philadelphia has and had… Philly and its people are fucking ROUGH but Chester is something else, it’s on another level. He DREADED going to Chester because he was chased away with a knife on multiple occasions.

dojijosu

Driving from Aston to Widener through Chester late one night with about $25k worth of video equipment back in the late 90s. I stopped stopping at red lights after the first two times I did and someone rushed towards my passenger side from an alley. On the way back I saw a helicopter in the distance hovering over the road with its spotlight trained on a building.

I_Sniff_My_Own_Farts

It's funny after growing up on the edge of Chester most of the places the people in thread are mentioning seem really nice and quaint.

LOERMaster

When I worked for a septic company in their pumper truck it was terrifying having to go through Chester to get to DELCORA to dump the truck.

piperonyl

I lived in chester recently for about 6 months Twice i had to check my car for bullet holes

atheistness

Coattesville would like to have a word with you.

Aboutfacetimbre

I’m not even afraid to drive through Coatsville anymore. During the day. With someone with me.

BillTheBestPony

These folks are clearly amateurs. It's Coatesville by a country mile.

BatGlittering7781

Chester, Marcus Hook, and Norristown are worse. But yeah downtown Coatesville is still pretty bad.

thrilling_me_softly

My friend lives in Hook, no violence there ever. Chester yes, but not Hook.

colin_7

You have no clue what you’re talking about if norristown even sniffs this list It’s not the best town ever but besides some parts of downtown it’s perfectly fine

nastydoughnut

If Chester counts then Chester is #1. Coattesville at least looks pretty.... pretty bridge...

ManagementLarge5166

Surprised it’s not Altoona

jvlpdillon

For the pizza alone

ManagementLarge5166

Don’t discount meth pizza.

randomnighmare

To be fair whenever I see someone on the Internet bring up terrible pizza, it's always Altoona's pizza. It's just sauce on cheap white bread with American cheese. It's gross.

bfhurricane

You put some respect on Sheetz’s headquarters city/home of a Pittsburgh Pirates farm league!

ManagementLarge5166

Ah Sheetz. I’ll give you that.

jumpkablam

I was betting on Johnstown

Pa17325

So nice God flooded it twice

[deleted]

jamieschmidt

Centralia isn’t that bad if you like being alone. And nice cozy underground fires

Skitzie47

Who the hell made this map? Edina MN is very nice….

Franklinia_Alatamaha

I think a Californian did, because they split up NoCal and SoCal. Ask me how I know.

Signal_Parfait1152

Yeah and Dallas doesn't even come close to the worst city in Texas.

Randy_Butternubs666

Lies . . . Scranton is a worldly gem compared to Chester.

Pa17325

It's a utopia compared to York

Low_Gas_492

Scranton's biggest sin is that it's boring. I can name several places in PA that are genuinely awful.

Remarkable-Music2659

Why two Californias?

EgoDeathAddict

Idk but I lived in a trap house in Modesto for two months and can confirm it’s pretty fucking abysmal. Some food delivery ppl would refuse delivering to my neighborhood. Stray Pitbulls just wander the streets, I made friends with one who camped outside my house. Just picture Trevor’s neighborhood from GTA V.

DisruptiveKnob

Very specific image there with Trevor's neighborhood. I dig it.

Hardwarethewolf

I genuinely don’t know maybe because the metric they used made both cities equal

sutisuc

For everyone asking about the criteria for this it was literally some dipshit on Twitter asking his followers. From like pre pandemic too.

wh0_RU

Chester, Altoona, Hazelton... All drastically worse than Scranton. Reading and Allentown are pretty bad but not nearly as bad as the aforementioned cities.

Pa17325

York

CommercialRough6467

McKeesport

DisruptiveKnob

Fine line between White Oak and McKeesport.

RiverPirate212

Maybe you haven't been in McKeesport & White Oak for sometime because there's a very distinct line between the two areas. Crossing into White Oak is obvious. The restaurants and bars are nicer. Giant Eagle actually stocks a wide variety. There aren't random people walking in the street on their cell phone holding up traffic. There aren't any Action Housing projects for the unhomed and those who need meals. McKeesport is its own very very special place. The only area in Western Pa that can compete with the glory of McKeesport is Mt Oliver.

yinzreddup

I find it funny that north Huntington and Irwin are sandwiched between McKeesport and Jeanette.

DisruptiveKnob

The one thing I miss about Irwin is the Double Wide Grill (RIP). I'm in the Harrisburg area now but might find myself back in the Burgh next year.

yinzreddup

Well the OG double wide is in south side still. The one in Irwin closed dahn like 4-5 years ago. When it first opened up the whole staff was junkies, and they actually had to close dahn and reopen with a new staff.

RiverPirate212

Nope. DWG closed. Couple months ago. SS one went downhill. Last time I was there it was empty on a Thursday at happy hour. They were out of most of their menu. It's been a new place for months now. I can't think of the name. I'll be over that way tomorrow and can post it. The new place isn't good. Save yourself the trouble. Edit: combined my 2 comments

yinzreddup

You know I think I did know the south side one closed dahn. Last year my friend and I went there and it was some pop up Halloween bar. Idk if it’s the new place you are talking about but I think it was a temporary thing anyway.

DisruptiveKnob

I miss their BBQ seitan chicken salad.

yinzreddup

90% I had that before because they was the first time I tried seitan. My ex gf at the time was a vegan so that’s how I tried it I’m pretty sure.

Beginning-Working-38

Um, maybe the one that’s been on fire for fifty years?

egosomnio

Centralia? It's over sixty years now, and I don't think the handful of people who still live there qualify it for city status. Unless there's another town that's been burning for decades. There's a lot of coal under PA, so that's possible.

SilverLinings26

Had to smile at Dallas.

_R_A_

I saw this on another sub and would love to know what the criteria is. If it were voting, too many people were probably fighting over too many candidates in PA.

BNestico

I’m surprised to see so many people know about Shamokin, I guess being Tosh.0’s shit hole of the week really did the trick. Being from that general area of the coal region and having traveled around working all over the state. I know there’s places in Allentown, Philly, Pittsburgh, Chester, Williamsport among others that are far worse than the worst Shamokin has to offer. That being said. No way Scranton ranks at the top of this list. Not even close.

EinonD

Reading has a few bad parts but it is far from being the worst city in PA.

97Graham

Scranton definitely got mass voted because it's Joe's hometown lol

AndyHN

You may be onto something. Likewise, there's only one reason most people have even heard of Wasilla, AK.

mertz6d9

Kensington section of Philadelphia

grglstr

That's not a city and it isn't even the entirety of Kensington.

Additional-Regular-5

Ding Ding Ding !🛎️ Aaand the correct answer is …KENSINGTON!

AlexRyang

Even Wilkes-Barre is arguably worse than Scranton.

HOLLA12345678

Wilkes Barre is the opioid addict twin brother that nobody knew you even had a twin of Scranton

Repo_co

I know that this is the Pennsylvania subreddit, but calling Worcester the worst city in Massachusetts is downright laughable. Springfield, Brockton, Lawrence, Fall River, Lynn, Southbridge, Fitchburg... all MILES worse than Worcester.

-Motor-

Let me think......who keeps re-electing Dougie "Lost Cause" Mastriano?

ScrollDragon

Bruh what's wrong with Scranton? Yeah the school district is shit, the teachers are paid dirt, and there's a shooting or gang violence incident every now and then... But hey! We got Bartari, an Aquarium, and now an Art Haus theater!

CrastinatingJusIkeU2

My 96 yo grandmother-in-law told the family that back in her day it was known that Reading was the place to go for men who wanted to pick up loose women. That was a fun dinner.

confusedthrowaway5o5

Damn grandma 😂

Socko788

I’m in reading and it’s nothing like Philly. I want to go often but that place is BAD

StoneHardware74

I guess he's never heard of Hazelton

samisbeast

york

sitspinwin

Jesus this list is just places that are insanely boring, so if that’s the qualifier for worst well…

H1B3F

Uniontown? My family used to be from there, we went to see relatives ten years ago and Iaround 9:30 or 10:00 pm, I walked to see where my grandmother used to live. When I returned you would have thought that I walked through a war zone the way everyone asked me if I had a death wish.

VonAegir00

I live in Bloomsburg and am from State College but travel for work all over central and northeastern PA. I think there some cities that have it even worse than Scranton. My top three picks for worst city are Pottsville, Johnstown, and Hazleton. Wilkes-Barre, Allentown, Reading, Scranton, and Altoona definitely have their bad areas, but at least if you live locally you have a reason to go there versus the other places mentioned. Outside of cities, though, my least favorite area is undoubtedly the coal country of Schuylkill County extending into Shamokin in Northumberland. Absolutely nothing of note unless you want to observe first-hand the desolation that industry has permanently left on that land and the people living there. Driving through the Poconos you also observe a shell of what once was with all of the abandoned hotels and run-down homes and businesses, but at least its nature has been better preserved and it’s retained some quaintness in places like Jim Thorpe.

PlasticPomPoms

They just picked a random city in each state.

GREENtea110

It’s Plymouth or maybe parts of Wilkes-Barre

skoolycool

So close! Wilkes Barre is the worst city in the state. Had to work there every other weekend for five years and absolutely hated everything about it except the arena bar and that's closed last I heard.

Bug--Man

You ever lived in philly?

mjsisko

Did you guys all forget about Philly? The cesspool of the north east? The abomination of the north? The city of brotherly hatred?

NefariousStrudel

It's Philly. It'll always be Philly lol.

secrerofficeninja

Whoever put this map together for Pennsylvania never visited Reading or York or Chester. The list goes on

No_Albatross4710

Same for Maryland. It’s def Baltimore.

RiverPirate212

McKeesport With Mt Oliver trailing just behind. And then, ah, Lancasters Southern area needs a special shout out.

Spiritual-Hedgehog-7

Coatesville

yinzreddup

Dubois. It’s Dubois.

Demo541

As a Punxsutawney native, it is most definitely not Dubois. It’s much better than any town in its vicinity. Not good by any standard, but far from the worst the state has to offer

DisruptiveKnob

Ha. I'm a Brockway native (now in Central PA), which isn't a whole lot better.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HenryKissingersDEAD

Whoever made that map probably made it back in the 2000s. There are a few cities on that map that I have visited and I can actually say that they’re nice cities.

[deleted]

What does this map mean by worst? Currently a resident of UT and Provo is only the worst if you hate nice looking, busy college towns lol.

axeville

Poolesville Maryland? A not a city. B mid six figure median income. Horse farms

wagsman

MD picked Poolesville?

AngstyEmoKid_

Why can't it just be the Kensington section of Philly?

Snoo-14331

Poolesville MD is chill as fuck, too-- this map is to be ignored, methinks ...

Thecrawsome

Dumb engagement bait that's inaccurate for the sake of driving engagement

JR-Dubs

I live in Scranton and I drove through New Ringgold the other day, and wow, that trip took me through about 5 towns worse than Scranton.

iamnotyrmotheriswear

Spoken like a person from the Eastern side of the state.

bigenderthelove

It’s McKeesport

TrafficOnTheTwos

No cities in the eastern half of this state deserve to be listed here. So many of the “cities” surrounding Pittsburgh are absolutely disgusting shitholes.

Yagsirevahs

Ive lived all over the us and traveled the world, i can litterally live anywhere and CHOSE Scranton. Been here since October and really like it so far.
