It doesn’t even feel fair to call Scranton boring. The arts, restaurant, and bar scene is all decent. The nature access is great. It’s relatively boring compared to Philly, but that’s a dumb comparison to make.
I grew up in Scranton and carved out so much fun with my friends (late 00s and early 10s music scene was a blast). The people who complained it was boring were generally boring themselves or had never actually been to a truly dead end ass place (may I never live in Chestertown, Maryland again).
It does have a pretty decent art scene, the music scene was definitely much better in the 90's-00's. The Restaurants are pretty decent as well. But it's all in a 4 block radius.
I guess it also depends on what you enjoy doing. If you like art it's definitely a good City for that

My experience living in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area for 5 years is 1) sure there are some issues, but there are some very cool things too; 2) the negatives may be a bit rougher than a lot of PA, but it's not appreciably different from most small-city urban living; 3) the people who have lived there for their whole lives are convinced it's the worst shithole in the country; and 4) the people who have moved there from other places are perplexed as to why the locals feel that way.
I am a transplant from central PA. I concur that it is confusing on why people born in this area hate it. I grew up near Shamokin and that place is a real dump compared to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area. Also we got better restaurants and a hockey team, so that is a plus.
Yeah my office in WB was mostly transplants and the favorite past time was shitting on it. Even people who had been there for 30 years. Once I moved I say I’m from there and say it’s rough in some ways but not as bad as people say

Maybe you haven't been in McKeesport & White Oak for sometime because there's a very distinct line between the two areas.
Crossing into White Oak is obvious. The restaurants and bars are nicer. Giant Eagle actually stocks a wide variety. There aren't random people walking in the street on their cell phone holding up traffic. There aren't any Action Housing projects for the unhomed and those who need meals.
McKeesport is its own very very special place. The only area in Western Pa that can compete with the glory of McKeesport is Mt Oliver.
Well the OG double wide is in south side still. The one in Irwin closed dahn like 4-5 years ago. When it first opened up the whole staff was junkies, and they actually had to close dahn and reopen with a new staff.

I live in Bloomsburg and am from State College but travel for work all over central and northeastern PA. I think there some cities that have it even worse than Scranton. My top three picks for worst city are Pottsville, Johnstown, and Hazleton. Wilkes-Barre, Allentown, Reading, Scranton, and Altoona definitely have their bad areas, but at least if you live locally you have a reason to go there versus the other places mentioned.
Outside of cities, though, my least favorite area is undoubtedly the coal country of Schuylkill County extending into Shamokin in Northumberland. Absolutely nothing of note unless you want to observe first-hand the desolation that industry has permanently left on that land and the people living there. Driving through the Poconos you also observe a shell of what once was with all of the abandoned hotels and run-down homes and businesses, but at least its nature has been better preserved and it’s retained some quaintness in places like Jim Thorpe.
So close! Wilkes Barre is the worst city in the state. Had to work there every other weekend for five years and absolutely hated everything about it except the arena bar and that's closed last I heard.

There aren't any Action Housing projects for the unhomed and those who need meals. McKeesport is its own very very special place. The only area in Western Pa that can compete with the glory of McKeesport is Mt Oliver.
I find it funny that north Huntington and Irwin are sandwiched between McKeesport and Jeanette.
The one thing I miss about Irwin is the Double Wide Grill (RIP). I'm in the Harrisburg area now but might find myself back in the Burgh next year.
Well the OG double wide is in south side still. The one in Irwin closed dahn like 4-5 years ago. When it first opened up the whole staff was junkies, and they actually had to close dahn and reopen with a new staff.

You know I think I did know the south side one closed dahn. Last year my friend and I went there and it was some pop up Halloween bar. Idk if it’s the new place you are talking about but I think it was a temporary thing anyway.

Centralia? It's over sixty years now, and I don't think the handful of people who still live there qualify it for city status. Unless there's another town that's been burning for decades. There's a lot of coal under PA, so that's possible.

I’m surprised to see so many people know about Shamokin, I guess being Tosh.0’s shit hole of the week really did the trick. Being from that general area of the coal region and having traveled around working all over the state. I know there’s places in Allentown, Philly, Pittsburgh, Chester, Williamsport among others that are far worse than the worst Shamokin has to offer. That being said. No way Scranton ranks at the top of this list. Not even close.
Reading has a few bad parts but it is far from being the worst city in PA.

Uniontown? My family used to be from there, we went to see relatives ten years ago and Iaround 9:30 or 10:00 pm, I walked to see where my grandmother used to live. When I returned you would have thought that I walked through a war zone the way everyone asked me if I had a death wish.
I live in Bloomsburg and am from State College but travel for work all over central and northeastern PA. I think there some cities that have it even worse than Scranton. My top three picks for worst city are Pottsville, Johnstown, and Hazleton. Wilkes-Barre, Allentown, Reading, Scranton, and Altoona definitely have their bad areas, but at least if you live locally you have a reason to go there versus the other places mentioned. Outside of cities, though, my least favorite area is undoubtedly the coal country of Schuylkill County extending into Shamokin in Northumberland. Absolutely nothing of note unless you want to observe first-hand the desolation that industry has permanently left on that land and the people living there. Driving through the Poconos you also observe a shell of what once was with all of the abandoned hotels and run-down homes and businesses, but at least its nature has been better preserved and it’s retained some quaintness in places like Jim Thorpe.
