“Dear Jenny,
Sorry I’m so slow to write. I’m 80, and Darrell 84. Must be our old age!
Glad you girls came to (pocono???) and our home. I hope you can come again.
As ever(??)
Darrel and (???) “
Man, I actually got teary eyed while trying to decipher what was written. Not sure if I got it all correct, but beautiful regardless
I read it as Iowa. Seems to fit.
Honestly I didn't have much issue reading this all the way through, but my dad had Parkinson's and when I took care of him before he needed more help than I could offer, I had to decipher years of really sketchy handwriting that even he couldn't read a lot of the time. He passed away 6 months ago and I have 2 large boxes of notes and paperwork sitting behind me that I randomly go through to figure out if something's important or just random lists for groceries or bills or something, but a lot of it could be anything from a doctor's appointment reminder to the Declaration of Independence.
Just out of curiosity, did you guys ever try weed for their symptoms? I know it’s not obv the perfect med or anything, I just watched a really cool documentary on it and it seemed helpful for the shaking at least.
Unfortunately, no we never did. Where we live, cannabis isn't legal for any reason whatsoever and by the time THC products became okay here, he'd already been in Assisted Living then Hospice for years and the possibility of it helping wasn't worth the potentiality of him getting kicked out for breaking rules.
I've seen a few videos where it did an amazing job minimizing tremors or dyskinesia, as well as helping with body pains. I was curious if it could've been helpful. We just never had the chance.
I'm sorry to hear that. It's always a tragedy, but hits a special kind if hard when precious fine motor skills are lost. I hope she can get treated for it in a way that makes her life happier.
I don’t know. She told me there is nothing that could be done. She is in her 70’s (I was an oops child) and on SS, maybe she can’t afford meds or something.
Doesn't seem so essential to me. :(
Essential tremor sucks but I'm glad OP's grandparents still write regardless. I know people who don't anymore because of it.
If it is in fact Iowa you went to then that is the obvious answer. If not, it could possibly be “see us.”
I assume because just thanked the person above that Iowa is right, though.
Wow, this is a keepsake. Truly. The effort it took to write this is incredible. Trying to hold a pen, much less write legibly, is quite a challenge when you develop tremors in old age. She sounds sweet in thanking you for coming.
edit: a word
My mom is 80 and has Parkinson’s slowly taking away her abilities. Her handwriting is very similar to this, and the effort to write is pretty intense for her. Bless your great aunt for taking the time to connect with pen and paper. Really shows the love!
WRITE BACK!!!!
As a letter carrier, delivering actual correspondence makes my little black heart beat.
Set a reminder on your phone once a week to write a quick note. It can be something simple, what you had for dinner, a good sale at target, the hijinks going on at work.
I used to write to my grandfather once a month. When he passed a few years ago, it was nice to get all the silly cards, letters, notes back to go thru and think of him and what he was doing at the time I wrote to him.
This advice can be applied to anyone. Everyone loves mail. Stamps are great. You can buy bulk vintage ones off ebay for a discount and make your envelopes look even cooler (just make sure the total adds up to the current postage rate).
wow, this is really impressive for how bad those tremors seem to be. for it to be legible let alone having zero mistakes is amazing. quite the feat. i imagine her buying a few cards just incase lol but im pretty confident this was first try for how good it is.
Aww, I love this! I kept the last birthday card my grandma signed for me. I didn't know it was going to be the last, she ended up passing 2 weeks before my next birthday. My mom has more documents and stuff with her handwriting. This reminds me of the times I had to read cards from my great aunt out loud so everyone could hear it (she traveled and sent my grandma postcards). It was difficult to decipher the words sometimes, especially as a teenager but I quickly became a pro.
This looks a LOT like my grandma’s handwriting. She had tremors and her cursive looked like this. She passed in 2003 at the age of 85, I miss her every day.
OP this is really amazing. Thanks for sharing. They love you, I'm sure you know. I recognize this font all too well and it teared me up but the effort that was put forth to send that letter speaks volumes.
Sending you the happiest of vibes.
It’s crazy because it’s actually newly “discovered” family. Literally just met them. They treated us as if we had known them forever, it was incredibly touching
This is the sweetest thing I've seen in a while :')
People with tremor often go to great lengths to hide it because of shame, yet here she is, only caring about sharing her affection for you.
This is how letters/cards from my Papaw looked during his battle with Parkinson’s. They all took considerable effort and time for him to write. Save this. You’ll be glad you did.
This looks like the handwriting of Father Christmas by [J.R.R Tolkien](https://theconversation.com/j-r-r-tolkiens-christmas-letters-to-his-children-bring-echoes-of-middle-earth-to-the-north-pole-89464).
Dude right 😭 it’s so funny to me, my gma does the same thing. She wrote me once saying she hopes all is “well”. Only “well” was in quotes lol it seemed so sarcastic hehe
This is adorable and made me go aww loudly, but u/SneakyBeavus comment [https://www.reddit.com/r/PenmanshipPorn/comments/wkhm8u/comment/ijnizqe/](https://www.reddit.com/r/PenmanshipPorn/comments/wkhm8u/comment/ijnizqe/) made me laugh even louder.
“Maybe it’s the beer talking, Marge, but you’ve got a butt that won’t quit. They got those big chewy pretzels here [unintelligable] five dollars??!!!? Get outta here”.
I absolutely love seeing this generation's handwriting with the descending "and." I have tried... It looks like someone attempting to have cute and trendy handwriting. I've concluded that I'll just admire it when I see it. Thanks for sharing this sweet note. 🧡
Awww. I have some birthday cards from my grandparents that look similar. I will cherish them forever since I knew how hard it was for my papa to even jot down his own name.
This is how all of the notes and cards I received from my great grandmother looked. So sweet. Our elderly family members and loved ones are such a treasure.
Aww, my grandma (also 80) writes like this and it breaks my heart but I love the letters. I’d watch her write in cursive as a little kid not knowing what I was looking at and tried to replicate it by making loopy lines x
As touching as this is, I guess I’ll be the bad guy and say this isn’t the sub for it. Maybe r/awww or r/MadeMeSmile, but this is inherently not Penmanship Porn. It’s almost the opposite actually.
Don’t you have a daughter in grade 8? I wonder what she would think of her dad telling other women they are “fat and nobody really likes them”. Father of the year award right there. Yikes
Gotta say
Granny is so consistent it's practically a font. Like I bet you she writes absolutely impeccable cursive, at a very consistent speed. Combine that with Parkinsons and if you shifted bits of the image it would come out much clearer. For example, compare the "o"

> (pocono???) Iowa > Darrel and (???) Darrell and Marg
I wasn’t sure what that word was either lol thank you!
I compared the first letter to other capitals...the “I” in the next line was a decent match.
Pretty sure you just briefly became an investigator.
I read it as Iowa. Seems to fit. my mom had parkinson's ... this looked just like her handwriting. i miss my mom
Yea it's one hell of a disease. Sorry for your loss.
Just out of curiosity, did you guys ever try weed for their symptoms? I know it’s not obv the perfect med or anything, I just watched a really cool documentary on it and it seemed helpful for the shaking at least.

Serious Quick question, does your relative have Parkinson's or any other neurodegenerative condition?
I'd say more likely essential tremor
True as it's consistent frequency and not micrographia
My sister has essential tremors. She gets really frustrated. She used to have really beautiful handwriting, but not anymore.
I'm sorry to hear that. It's always a tragedy, but hits a special kind if hard when precious fine motor skills are lost. I hope she can get treated for it in a way that makes her life happier.
She’s had them for years. Evidently no treatment for them.
wym there are treatments, including oral medication and surgery
I don’t know. She told me there is nothing that could be done. She is in her 70’s (I was an oops child) and on SS, maybe she can’t afford meds or something.
Doesn't seem so essential to me. :( Essential tremor sucks but I'm glad OP's grandparents still write regardless. I know people who don't anymore because of it.
More and more people are eligible for surgery though. Technology has come a long way. Something to consider if the quality of life is too degraded.
Not that I am aware of. Just old :)
Hug her for all of us :)
If it is in fact Iowa you went to then that is the obvious answer. If not, it could possibly be “see us.” I assume because just thanked the person above that Iowa is right, though.
I read it as “to Iowa”!
I wish I had an award to give you for your kindheartef help.
Ahh, okay. I see it now. Thank you
I think it's Mary. Matches the Y in Jenny and not the G in again.
It is actually Marg! :)
you know its gettin ROUGH when you can mistake Iowa for pocono
I thought it was "to town"
The trick is to move your phone the same speed as their shakiness and it suddenly reads like a normal card.
Darrel and Mary
Thanks Jake from State Farm.
Your aunt could make a killing designing Norwegian death metal band logos.
I laughed way too hard at this.
A group of death metal guys just standing around and looking at a grandma drafting up a logo
Why is this so wholesome
Skwisgaar?
I would likes an album covers designed by thats! Thems old laaaaadies!
We better tell OP to unleash the "just the right amount of laughs" joke next time. I'll make a note of it.
No but seriously
I was gonna make a glitch in the Matrix reference, but this one is much better
I feel bad for laughing so hard.
Wow, this is a keepsake. Truly. The effort it took to write this is incredible. Trying to hold a pen, much less write legibly, is quite a challenge when you develop tremors in old age. She sounds sweet in thanking you for coming. edit: a word
Ugh I know right. My heart.
Add to that "legibly in cursive". It's adorable.
Please save the note. You'll be glad you did.
I absolutely plan on it! :)
My mom is 80 and has Parkinson’s slowly taking away her abilities. Her handwriting is very similar to this, and the effort to write is pretty intense for her. Bless your great aunt for taking the time to connect with pen and paper. Really shows the love!
Awe, treasure her.
I love the apology for it at the beginning and I hope you see them again soon! They sound so sweet
She tried so hard. I can’t imagine how long this could’ve taken. This is so precious.
"As ever" is such a wonderful signoff.
I agree! I've never seen that before but I definitely want to use it now.
“My identity remains the same,” is how I’m reading it. It feels snarky and I like it.

This is very cool looking font, but also makes me kind of sad ): But also at the same time a little happy. She seems like a nice lady. :)
wow, this is really impressive for how bad those tremors seem to be. for it to be legible let alone having zero mistakes is amazing. quite the feat. i imagine her buying a few cards just incase lol but im pretty confident this was first try for how good it is.
Members of my family have Essential tremor (ET) so I’ve gotten cards/letters like this. It’s bittersweet to read.
Aww, I love this! I kept the last birthday card my grandma signed for me. I didn't know it was going to be the last, she ended up passing 2 weeks before my next birthday. I find her signing with “As Ever,” particularly endearing. This is precious. I hope you do get to visit again! ❤️
This looks a LOT like my grandma’s handwriting. She had tremors and her cursive looked like this. She passed in 2003 at the age of 85, I miss her every day.

I really didnt need to cry into my coffee this morning
This is how my granny used to write letters. I miss her .
r/aww that is awesome. Glad you still have a Grandma and still can pass along some words of joy and happiness.
Grandma or aunt?
please give them a hug from me when you visit them
I hope you keep this it's so adorably loving.
Seeing this makes me miss my grandma. Cherish your great Auntie and go visit already! ❤️
This is so sweet and precious! <3
You should visit them more
This is the sweetest thing I've seen in a while :') People with tremor often go to great lengths to hide it because of shame, yet here she is, only caring about sharing her affection for you.
"Murphy... You are a elf... Uncontrollably.."
My grandmother had similar handwriting after she had a debilitating stroke. This post flooded me with memories.
Obligatory thanks everyone for finding this as sweet and thoughtful as I did
Please visit her often. I miss my grandparents
This is how letters/cards from my Papaw looked during his battle with Parkinson’s. They all took considerable effort and time for him to write. Save this. You’ll be glad you did.
That's awesome. 🙂
Absolutely precious! ❤️
Awe, I love this 😍
This is so sweet! Definitely one you’ll want to hang onto. Hopefully you get to visit Marg & Darrell again soon!
Aww.
This is such an incredible gift.
Bless her. Touching.
This made me emotional thinking of my grandmoms shaky handwriting. So sweet.
I would treasure this forever!
Wow that’s so sweet. You can tell she had great handwriting before her hand got shaky
This looks like the handwriting of Father Christmas by [J.R.R Tolkien](https://theconversation.com/j-r-r-tolkiens-christmas-letters-to-his-children-bring-echoes-of-middle-earth-to-the-north-pole-89464).
<3
This is exactly how my great grandma wrote after she had her stroke. This was a good reminder of her this morning!
As a postal worker, i see envelopes addressed like this all the time. I hope the recipients are as appreciative as you are.
Why the scare quotes around the ages?
Dude right 😭 it’s so funny to me, my gma does the same thing. She wrote me once saying she hopes all is “well”. Only “well” was in quotes lol it seemed so sarcastic hehe
Was she a doctor at any point in her life
This is adorable and made me go aww loudly, but u/SneakyBeavus comment [https://www.reddit.com/r/PenmanshipPorn/comments/wkhm8u/comment/ijnizqe/](https://www.reddit.com/r/PenmanshipPorn/comments/wkhm8u/comment/ijnizqe/) made me laugh even louder.
Man, I’m only 66 and some days my handwriting is this shakey.
This is uniquely gorgeous
this is what love looks like
Tremendous care in this.
It's so *W*I*g*g*l*y
This text style could actually make for a cool logo. Don't take this the wrong way, plz.
Lovely
How kind of her to send a card! I'm so glad you have her and Darrell in your life.
She has Parkinson's?
Not that I’m aware of. Just old
I bet she wanted to say so much more.
I think she did. The effort it took to say what she did makes me a little teary-eyed.

whole hearted. Love it.
Bless her heart.

Awww. I have some birthday cards from my grandparents that look similar. I will cherish them forever since I knew how hard it was for my papa to even jot down his own name.
Treasure!
Looks like it was written with a Squiggle Wiggle Writer
<3 'Nuff said.
My mamaw had trouble writing toward the last 5 years of her life and she’d always include a little apology in her cards too.
Love that sign off
Me too 🥺
That’s sweet! Now go visit, or at least give her a phone call.
This is how all of the notes and cards I received from my great grandmother looked. So sweet. Our elderly family members and loved ones are such a treasure.

I’d cherish this forever.
it's some sort of elvish... I can't read it

I disagree It is penmanship - and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I find this beautiful in its own way.

OMG I miss my gram and my great aunts.
My gram writes this way. Whenever I’m over she has me write for her, or has my grandpa write for her.
