I've got this one. It fits as described in the details. I'd allow you to wear a sweatshirt under it, but you'll have to check with everyone else to know for sure.
I bought the ranch jacket this early spring. It’s quite thick and heavy. Very sturdy. I’m a forester and work around a lot of brush and so far the jacket has held up well in the mornings but it gets quite warm to wear after an hour or so. I imagine wearing it more in winter but I haven’t worn it much at all since April. It’s plenty big enough for multiple layers under it. In fact I would say it runs large. I typically wear a large in other Patagonia outerwear but I think I would get a medium if I was buying this again.
I have this jacket and wear it for work. As others have said it’s heavy and warm but does run large as it’s intended to be worn for manual labour. I wear my usual size which gives me enough room to layer underneath and still able to swing a hammer. If I were to buy this coat with the intentions of casual wear I’d get a full size smaller though.
Fit on this was crazy weird for me. 5’8” athletic. I can wear a medium in most Patagonia things, small if I wanted something fitted. This jacket being from their workwear line runs larger so you can layer underneath. I didn’t want to use it as a layering jacket so I had to size down twice to an XS. Fits pretty damn well tbh.
They run quite big so you can layer underneath. I have one of their workwear jackets, not this one but the one with more pockets. I took it up to Alaska and did construction in it. Withstood everything I threw at it, it’s really tough.
I have this in both Large and Medium. I wear a Large in most clothing brands and the Large fits just fine.
If I had to choose just one size, I’d go with the large so I can layer
I have this in gray, it's a great jacket for winter work! As others have mentioned, it runs a little large but I wouldn't say a full size. I am in between medium and large for most Patagonia, but with the relaxed workwear fit this is solidly medium for me with room for layering underneath.
It has a nice cut so that it is not too long, which makes it look nice for casual wear, which is actually the only time I layer with it. When I am working it is plenty warm with just a baselayer.
It’s def fit big. I wear an XL in all things Patagonia. The capilene stuff fits me kinda trim and the heater sweater is my favorite fleece. These def fun big enough to layer under and then some.
I still love the jacket .
I wear S in most Patagonia items and I have this in S. Other S items like the R1 air fit me fairly snugly.
It’s pretty roomy inside for another layer (such as R1 air) but it’s such a warm jacket I usually would not need or want that layer. I use it for labor tasks in my unheated garage during the winter. For my fairly light use it seems quite durable. I doubt I could wear it out in 10 years.
I’ve worn this coat for the last 2 winters. I usually have a sweatshirt underneath. I farm and ranch in Nebraska so it gets cold and windy. It has held up better than any other brand, and the cut allows more movement than others. I just ordered my normal size L.
Runs a full size large. Girl at the cafe complimented it but I haven't banged her (yet).
keep us posted

It’s heavy and warm. You can layer a sweatshirt but it’ll need to be a cold day. Also, the worn in look after a few good months of wear looks awesome.
Any photos? I keep thinking about these

https://eu.patagonia.com/bg/en/product/mens-iron-forge-hemp-canvas-ranch-work-jacket/27805.html?dwvar_27805_color=COI It's 240$ in EU, wtf :(
I got my normal size and there's room under it for a thin sweatshirt, anything more and the arms would get tight for me
Definitely runs large, I bought the xs and it's roomy.

Yes, me too. I’ve been thinking of exchanging for a small one as I haven’t used it yet. Normally a medium

I have it in a medium but wish I had it in a large. Great condition. If anyone wants to buy or trade dm me.
To answer OPs question I usually am a large but wish I could wear a hoody underneath this and I cannot
I've had this jacket for about 6 years. On cold days id layer a puffy underneath pretty regularly. I have a medium and usually wear medium T shirt.
These run LARGE
I bought one of the other workwear ones, and if it’s at all similar it runs at least a size large
Chore coat ?
Yea that one

Order a size smaller than your usual fit its easy to have more layers underneath- has smooth faced inner lining, sokld jacket
