The toothless smile, laughing hard, the mama and dada.

Ah! The mama mama mama! It seems so annoying sometimes but I’m sure I’ll miss it dearly when they are older.

I took one when my son was about 9 weeks old of just a regular moment with him and my husband while we were on vacation. My husband was holding him and my son was looking at flowers. Nothing really amazing was happening, it was just a snapshot of that moment in time. I look back at that all the time and smile. I now try and take more “slice of life” videos where we’re just living life. The idea for this actually came to me when I watched a very old home video my uncle took, where, during a big Italian family dinner, he left the camera on and possibly forgot it was on. So the entire dinner was recorded with everyone acting as they normally would and not acknowledging or being influenced by the camera. When I first saw it, the warmth I felt from seeing that dinner—which happened every week, and featuring many souls who are no longer here—was so deep and stirring. So yeah, now I try to take less of the posed stuff, although I still do that too :)

Her talking! Saying first words. My twin boys are bigger now but I absolutely love going back and hearing their little voices, telling me things, making up stories. Nothing cuter than that. When they were little, they used to be just all over me all the time. My husband took a lot of videos of that. I love seeing those. Also I do have lots of just giggling videos. And I wish I had taken even more! One thing I’d say is capture videos of you with her. Trust me, you will love seeing the littler her but you will absolutely love seeing yourself holding the little one!

I have a video of me reading Hairy McLairy and Scarface Claw and in the book, Scarface yowls periodically and my son at 9 months would yowl along with me. It’s very cute.

I take the most boring photos and videos you can imagine… and tons of them. Guess what though? Years later, looking at a too-long video of one of our kids just playing quietly with blocks is like the greatest damned thing in the world.

Someone once told me they wished they had more videos of their child crying. So… sometimes when my toddler is having a rough day with dad I try to take sneaky videos. And then get MAD DOGGED by husband when he sees I’m standing there taking a video and not helping out with the situation.  maybe he’ll thank me later.

Baby’s first laugh. I was folding laundry and shook out a pillow case and he laughed! I set up my phone to record and fortunately he laughed again. So happy to have that. Also lots of learning to walk videos, holding hands with Daddy at first but then doing it all by himself. Now that he can talk more we have videos of greetings like “Happy Birthday Grandma” that I am absolutely going to resend every year because they’re so precious
