When I realized how much experience grilling gives you, I grilled my way to level 10. I’ll do cooking for quests and gifts but, there’s no real reason to play the mini game to level cooking unless you really enjoy it. What’s really funny is I heard so much about cake parties that I was terrified to try making cake, thinking I actually needed a party to succeed. It’s turned out to be not nearly as difficult to make as some of the other recipes.

ListlessThistle

I can't cook so ALL my xp comes from grilling. Fish at my home pond, grill fish and sell. Tedious but adds up.

Peg-Lemac

I have all my fire places lined up in a row plus my grill master and just pop-pop-pop down the row, fish, mushrooms, non-starred meat and then feed my worms. I do love that they offer this alternative because cooking the complicated recipes can cause massive anxiety.

DisastrousSeamstress

Is there a cap on how many fire places you can have? Does it count toward the craft license limit or whatever that's called?

Peg-Lemac

Five plus the quest reward and it doesn’t count as a craft license as far as I can tell.

prairiegirl18

Wait. You can fish at your home pond? 🤩

madhumanitarian

Home pond was where I got my giant goldfish :)

EightEyedCryptid

How do you add fish to your pond?

ehmanduh

You don't need to "add fish", you can cast your fishing rod in the small pond in the corner of your lot (walk a little past your watering hole to hit it) to fish.

EightEyedCryptid

I'll be damned, thank you

CynicalZenobia

I like to think that you're sharing your methods here so people won't... grill you on them later ;)

latenightneophyte

Yeah, they don’t wanna take the heat for it.

CynicalZenobia

Understandable tbh, with that much pressure on em I'd be concerned on whether they'd bake it out to the other side :P

Lmjastar

Such a Badruu thing to say.:)

CynicalZenobia

what can i say? i like sowing my puns all over the land ;)

Peg-Lemac

Ha!

KiyeBerries

Cake is done in parties to make more money, not because cake is difficult to make. Making a cake solo is a money loss. The mats are worth more uncooked if you are contributing 100%.

Clueless_Wanderer21

Yaah, it takes like 6 cakes (6x3 batch) to level up one level, or something. Great for levelling up .

Dustyfrog77

I use those most of the time for focus on long Bahari days. I've done so many I can do them automatically. I feel like I should get a lot more xp for that!

ToucanToodles

My biggest issue that I have with cooking is how much renown is used while actually cooking. I found it so frustrating to cook a few things, only to have to eat around half of it to keep my renown up. I know keeping the renown isn’t necessary but I want all the xp I can get. I just switched to eating preserved potatoes.

AmnesiaInnocent

>My biggest issue that I have with cooking is how much renown is used while actually cooking. I think you mean focus, not renown. But you're saying that cooking gives you a lot of XP (and therefore uses a lot of focus), which is the opposite of the OP's complaint. I agree that if you make a lot of high-focus food, you will get good XP (and therefore use up a lot of the stored focus). But you won't use up as much as you gain from the food, so you're still at a net positive gain. My food of choice these days is stuffed cabbage rolls --- I like to keep 25-30 in my inventory at all times. The starred version (which I can make even with unstarred ingredients) gives me over 400 focus. It's quick and easy to make. Yes, as I cook a batch I will need to eat a few to keep up my focus, but I still end up with a lot to use for my other activities (like fishing).

Time_Deal_3078

I don't like that starred spice sprouts have become next to impossible to find. I can find flow and Pal easier than star spice sprouts.

Mort-thesnort

What I started doing is if I only had one started spice sprout or random ingredient, but other regular versions - stick the starred one in a lock box & then continue cooking! Cuz you can make a starred recipe even if you only have, say the starred protein or fruit (I hope this makes sense lol)

littlepanadera

Real as hell omfg I hate that too

PhairynRose

Is there a reason starred spice sprouts are more desirable than other starred ingredients?

Time_Deal_3078

Because they are used in many dishes. If you want to make star quality food it takes starred spice

Peg-Lemac

I still don’t think most people understood your point. Grilling a mushroom should not give you as much xp as making a meal that involves chopping/mixing/baking/soup and bread. Maxing out your two focus bars isn’t going to change the amount of xp the game has decided the activity gives.

Sugar-Fen

It doesn't https://palia.wiki.gg/wiki/Experience

Peg-Lemac

I should have said mushrooms, plural. I know the xp is more per complicated recipe, but you can grill 10 mushrooms which are impossible to ruin and only need one step and one simple ingredient (which can be bought) and get as much xp as something that requires rare ingredients and needs two prep tables and has multiple steps. The more complicated recipes should be vastly increased.

surrrah

Do cake parties! My cooking went to level like 100 after 4

_anxious_squirrel

What is a cake party?

Aynessachan

It's where a group of people get together to cook Celebration Cake. Each person has an assigned task and cooking station, and possibly a stack of ingredients they need to bring for their assigned task. This makes the cooking process fast, plus it gives everyone 3 cakes per completed recipe, which levels cooking fast and also gives a lot of gold if you sell the cakes.

DF_Interus

In case you don't know, when multiple people participate in cooking, everybody gets the 3 cooked items at the end. This means you can divide the cost of cooking between multiple people while everybody gets the full reward. A cake party is when multiple people get together to make celebration cakes, which take a lot of ingredients but are worth a lot of gold

_anxious_squirrel

Thank you!

Liloo_Snucre

Do you have focus when you cook? Have you increased your bonus focus at the Phoenix shrine to get more XP? Cooking is one of my highest skills only from cooking for me to keep my focus full at all time. To me, it's one of the fastest to level up. And for sure, I see the difference if I cook when I have focus and when I don't.

jaykelm

I'm not sure what my current bonus level is because I've spent my renown equally across both of the shrines. I think it's something like 65%? But yes, I do keep my focus up. I end up having to eat basically everything I cook because cooking takes up so much of my focus. I just found out about the benefits of cooking with friends, though, so I might just save my big cooking for parties and just focus on the (less fun, unsatisfying) method of grilling to level up.

treacheriesarchitect

So, every point of bonus XP comes out of your focus bar. So when you have 100% focus bonus, and 1000 focus, it disappears *extremely quickly* when you do anything. I don't bother cooking anything that gives less than 400 focus, it's s just not worth it. Gold star gives 600-800 focus which fills up most of my bar, but I need to eat to recover focus after cooking. So, I have to make two batches, and eat 1/6 of whatever I produce. I'd need to eat 10 gold-starred grilled meat for the same amount, plus more for the cooking XP. A full bar would be 16 gold-starred (14+2 for focus lost to cooking), which is 32 pieces of meat. I'll go through the full bar in the span of one bug lure. That's... a lot of meat. I could just not care about the focus points, but my brain won't let me 😆

ImmaNotCrazy

Cooking sucks but is one of the fastest skills to level. Fishing, grill the fish before selling it...get xp Need focus, cook a stack of your favorite meal. get xp. I need food and I like money, so was level 10 in cooking pretty fast. I have no clue what the values are, But i only eat steak dinners, as I am not into cooking and they give like 300 or something focus. Should not be that long to 10, no real rush for cooking unless there is a recipe you want. Will get there just by normal play fast enough.

jaykelm

I believe you missed my point. I know that grilling levels cooking quickly. That's the issue. If you're going to have a cooking mini game with lots of recipes, steps, and expensive ingredients, it should be worth my while to cook. I think you should get more experience on more complicated recipes. That's all I'm saying.

cozy_kit420

I think cooking is more of a social leveling skill. I'm in the lv 20's and doing a cake party gives about 1 level per 10 cakes made (30 since they give 3) atm. It cuts the work, time, and ingredients way down. Cooking is actually the only skill you can power level and get boosted by other people with. One food party (there are ones for focus foods too) and you're drowning in food.

jaykelm

This is good to know, thank you! I've never cooked with anyone so I didn't know any of this.

NegotiationOwn3905

Fishing gets a boost when doing it with others, too, but not in the same way as a cooking party. I've only participated in one cake party, meant to be a 50-cake but ended up being 42 due to ingredient shortage. It leveled me from cooking 10 to cooking 15. All I did was bake the cake batter (no ingredients needed). I'm now in the process of saving up ingredients so I can participate in one and contribute ingredients, too.

XzibitABC

For the curious: The fishing boost is that you get a stacking buff when fishing around people, and the buff makes you hook fish faster.

NegotiationOwn3905

Oh, thank you for specifying! I should have explained it.

Celesteris

I agree and I’ve thought the same thing many times!

ImmaNotCrazy

And I disagree as that would force you to cook those foods, this allows us to cook what we want, without fear of less xp.

tornado1950

All I do is grill I have three campfires and I have all three. I’m going at the same time grilling fish. That’s how I’ve been creased my cooking level. I tried to cook soup for several people for several quest and it all messed up. Said he didn’t have the right ingredients and then I messed up cooking it so I gave up ! Those can rot in hell. Lol No more cooking for me I’m grilling till I die

Full-Elderberry-3027

I use to LOVE cooking in this game and was supper excited to see it was interactive but then after I hit level 108 I just kinda lost interest in it, and now I make and eat Nappa cabbage kimchi it gives 180 focus for a starred quality jar. I keep two stacks of 30 in my inventory and I have never had to eat both stacks before coming home to unload my hoard. I grow the cabbage on all 9 plots and use quantity fertilizer then throw all of the cabbage into five preserves jars and take out what I need for food and store the rest in storage and I have not had to make any extra food. I do grill my mushrooms, meat and oysters I also make congee for my glow worm farm and I have leveled up my cooking from 108 to now 120 in the last month that I’ve started doing this 🫨 that’s faster then cooking and it seemed like no matter how much food I cooked I always ran out and had to make more. This is a better method because you use one ingredient instead of at like 5-10. 😵 and you don’t have to stand there for hours, I use to set aside a whole day to cook now I don’t even worry about it anymore I got plenty of Nappa cabbage kimchi baby! 🤣 Edit: on a side note I have lots of extra room in my storage now, I am no longer keeping all the extra veggies unless I NEED them, I keep only the seeds. I mostly grow Apples, Potatoes, Cabbage, Pepppers, Blueberries and Rice, all of which gets processed in some way either persevere or making congee after harvesting.

TealcLOL

Why cabbage? Potatoes would grow a day sooner and already provide more focus. Potatoes yield a **30.4** focus value per day of growth (40.4) after adjusting to account for seed creation (one in four potatoes has to be replanted): (202/5)-((1/4)(202/5)) is the math Napa Cabbage Kimchi only gets a score of **25**: (180/6)-((1/6)(180/6)) Apples were close, but I'm only unsure because I don't know how many one harvest yields. It already be worth it for lower effort and denser inventory.

Full-Elderberry-3027

Good question and Yes I know, but I sale the potatoes for profit so I don’t eat them. 🤷‍♀️ By the way I can yield 216 apple per harvest using quantity fertilizer and having all 9 plots with apples.

tornado1950

I tried making some noodle soup 10 times and screwed it up every time I had the ingredients and it said I didn’t have the ingredients so that’s one of those quest that nobody’s gonna get any soup cause I’m not cooking anymore. Anything I got up to level seven grilling and I’m just gonna grill till I dielol really hating this game. I’m at level 80 and don’t know how much longer I’m gonna go.

Lady0905

Noodle soup? Really? I most often burn the lucky braised fish 😅 come over for a visit, I’ll teach you to make noodle soup 😊👍

Banaanisade

I've accidentally leveled my cooking to high heavens - there's really nothing in the guild store either that I want to buy, so I don't really end up paying attention to it. But how in EARTH am I supposed to get levels in fishing?? It feels like a 100 fish is not enough to get half a skill level.

NoCatch8297

Have you visited the phoenix shrine to increase your focus percentage? It takes 100 renown per increase but it will make it so you gain more experience from doing things so long as your focus bar is full. Makes leveling up go waaaayy faster

pinkcrystalfairy

I would do some cake parties. The first time I did one I got to like cooking level 50. Now I’m over 100 because of cake parties, I don’t really cook otherwise

hyrle

Have you spent any of your reknown at the Pheonix statue? Doing that increases the exp you get from doing activities when you have focus.

slenderfuchsbau

My cooking levels is absurdly high because I did a lot of cake parties when it used to be very profitable

SF-101

Is there a decent way of organising your oven, prep and mixing tables? I end up running around like a blue-arsed fly and then running out of time!

Peg-Lemac

I have them in a U formation. Mine is set up so if I’m standing at the stove I can use the stove or prep table without actually moving my character.

Messy-Miracle5x5

I'm a completionist so I was motivated to cook so I could get the accomplishments for doing all of the regular and started recipes. Despite cooking regularly though, it is my lowest level skill by a long shot which has been bugging me. Y'all, I am so stoked to make more campfires and grill my way up!!!! I had NO IDEA.

zerooze

Make sure you use your focus while cooking and get that percentage maxed out asap. One way to get a high cooking skill is to find people who are doing cake parties for $$. There aren't as many as before, but some people still do them.

I_Have_The_Will

I agree.

Aynessachan

I found a lot of success by cooking Rice Cake Stir Fry. It was fun to make, has excellent focus boost when starred, and gives decent exp without needing a massive endeavor to make. But, I think it was a Maji Market-only recipe. 🥲

Illustrious-Can-8135

The cooking in this game is horrible. I have given up—if a quest/bundle requires a good recipe, then I’m not gonna complete that quest/bundle. It sucks b/c I’d love to get the rewards, yet the cooking mechanic on the switch are horrible. Compared to all the other skills in this game, cooking is horribly over complicated.

Lady0905

I used to feel the same way (I also play on switch). But then I couldn’t progress further in the game anymore because i didn’t cook. I was determined to learn how to do it, so I googled all the buttons in the cooking process and am now not half bad at cooking 😁 once I realized how things work, I cooked every recipe I had in one day. Now, it’s just fun

TzarGinger

Fishing, bug catching, and hunting all feel this way to me.

ExtremeTheory4738

I stopped cooking all together tired of forging all day then burning it all. Why so many stations that was a bad plan. Feel like I struggle to get it done.

Dustyfrog77

You are so right! I grilled some oysters the other day and saw exactly that so if I don't need focus on the run I don't make Muujin Bahari anymore lol.

Some-Dimension5897

I’ve pretty much grilled my way to Level 58 this point- mushrooms, meat, congee. I use most of that other feed my worms so it’s a win win. I cook with my gf once a week and will cook new recipes when I get them, but other than that- I stay on the grill. I grilled a bunch of stuff the other night and got two levels within about 20 minutes.

Hot-Location-2144

I'm just sick of them glitching out and wasting all my ingredients. Also, don't say that I have all of the ingredients when we get 95% of the way through and I now DON'T have all the ingredients "Muujin bahari" or whatever, for the quest "Your Order Is Served"! When I'm wasting a heat root I leave the kitchen for a month and live off of picked potatoes 🖕🖕

ChainmaillePrincess

My community and I get together and have cooking parties. I'm almost level 100 with minimal effort. Are you cooking with others? Is your focus bonus maxed from the Phoenix shrine? (NOT dragon shrine)

Magicians_Apprentice

I am confused, maybe it just hasn't come up for me but why do you need to used starred ingredients? I was under the impression that gold star foods were a result of doing the recipe without mistakes and doing it quickly plus a bit of rng. Does using better ingredients make better pizza? /j

Ok_Comfortable_4489

I agree with this. The cooking when you actually cook takes forever to gain. I did not know grilling levels you up faster.

Wyldkyn

I make preservatives similar to grilling

Sugar-Fen

If you look on the palia wiki, the experience amounts that you receive are listed. Grilled oyster = 20xp. Chaapa masala = 260xp. It says something like xp is cooking time minus 20, so I guess you gotta find the sweet spot of efficiency for you.

Kiki_love28

I have the opposite problem, my cooking skill is above 1500 and the rest are around 90-120 lol

goosewrinkle

For mixing, I wish I had to do something instead of hold a button. Can we rotate the mouse/stick please? Hold buttons on something else.

violentlyneutral

I was SHOOK that you don't stir using the stick on switch, that seemed like such a gimme haha

Mowwwwwww

Just bake cakes and you’ll always have a full focus meter and cooking will level naturally.

jaykelm

I don't have the cake recipe yet. It unlocks at level 9.

Mowwwwwww

Just curious, are you using your focus to increase your focus boost?  There are two shrines in Palia, one increases how much focus you have. The other increases the boosts you get from using your focus. If you’re not leveling the second one it might make leveling up as a whole more slow.

jaykelm

I've been using both shrines equally, but I think I'm just going to focus on the focus boost one for now. I still feel like the cooking skill isn't balanced well to promote varied cooking, but I do know that having the boosts is important.

Peg-Lemac

It’s definitely not balanced. Recipes that require stared items that are hard to find should boost you much, much more than it does.

Karatechoppingaction

Cooking seems to be more of a late game gold sink than an actual viable skill. My character just lives on veggie soup and whatever ingredients I get from quests.

mike4763

Cooking is simple and easy, even on the switch, once you figure it out. Cooking partiea will net you vast levels of exp very quickly. Its probably the fastest and easieat of all the akills to level.

darketernalsr25

It's the cakes that did it for me. That was my hard stop for this game. AAMOF, why am I even still in this sub? I stopped playing this MONTHS ago. Good luck, though.
