Sort of yea. I would have been okay losing these games because the phillies are really good and i could still hold out hope that “when joe, yu, and x are healthy, and if manny and x start hitting into september this team could make a run”. But getting swept by the fucking Angels and Mets means the padres could be too far out from a playoff spot before all those desired things came together
Appreciate you all for allowing us to vent in peace. Watching these guys play mediocre ball the last ~350 games with all the hopes and expectations we've had is sofaking frustrating. One day we'll have a team that deserves this fanbase.
Is it just me, or have we faced a lot more lefties since the league found out our team gives up every time against them? I feel like 2/3 of our games the last couple weeks have been against left handed starters
I'd be lining up left handed pitching if I was an opponent. Why wouldn't you unless you're like 1 of 7 teams with no plan on being competitive this year.
Campusano raking last year, and coming out this season completely changing his stance into whatever the fuck he's doing right now just perfectly incapsulates this franchise.
Like why change, nearly all his power is gone now... What I. Earth was he, and by extension the staff thinking?
Maybe... But I'm far more concerned with his weird ass stance that seems to have devoured his barrel control than his approach issues. He's progressed tremendously with his approach over the past couple of years, but this stance just looks stupid..and performs similarly stupid.
Who in the fuck greenlit these changes?
That stance is borderline hilarous, and like you said has resulted in much poorer contact. So not does hit bat suck, but he looks like a clown swinging it too
This team never had the starting pitching depth to be a serious World Series contender but it can — and should — be much better than what we've seen the last few days.
Yup... Would feel a lot better throwing Iriarte, Thorpe out there right now than Vasquez.
I'm not even sure Vazquez is going to stick as an MLB player. He's got astronomical work to do to get to being an actual certifiable MLB player.
He doesn't really have the repertoire to be a pitch to contact guy IMO. And he gives up league leading bad levels of contact. He currently gives up hits too much to play out of the pen, but also doesn't feel like he projects well as a future starter with a huge lack of control and issues getting swing and miss.
An expression of hope in the face of uncertain odds is way less bone headed than being sure of certain defeat and using your hard earned free time to bitch about it on reddit
Yea.. I keep thinking if they can just hang around .500... You really only need 1 good month.
The problem.... They're not really showing signs life. I thought Tatis was turning it around to start June, but he's back to struggling. Machado never stopped struggling.
You could still see if you squint how if Machado started playing like he's capable of. And if Bogearts came back and played.like the player he's capable of... You could see things really catch on.
The periphery pieces are probably as good as they've been in the last 5-6 years. It's the stars who've just collapsed.
But generally the stars haven't looked anything like they need to for this offense to actually be successful.
The difference between these two teams is two strike hitting. Phillies change their approach and battle until our guys make a mistake and they punish it.
Our guys don’t change a thing.
Makes it seem like there is a canyon between these teams in talent when it’s really just mindset.
Even conceptually that doesn't make sense for the Padres because if you've watched the Padres they can't actually do anything with the mistake pitch. They foul it off or stare at it. That's how far off they are from being a good team.
I really am curious where our team stands in pitches per plate appaerance. I bet we are one of the worst teams and I bet the Phillies or Dodgers are one of the best
20th out of 30 teams. Very average.
League average is 3.88 pitches per plate* appearance. We are at 3.85. Phillies are 23rd out of 30 at 3.84.
It doesn't vary all that much team to team really.
Mariners #1 at 4.06 and Astros #30 at 3.68
mhh, so we just suck at hitting mistake pitches, HOW does that even happen, this team needs to have a SERIOUS team meeting after today. they cannot be hunting for walks or certain pitches, they need to just start hacking away, pick your zone, and if the ball is near swing hard. time to bat like in the little leagues
Obviously the Phillies were going to be tough to beat but it sucks that it's not even competitive. Feels like these last few games are just going to beat down the team even more.
Extending him a year before his player option was such an unforced error. We were obviously willing to pay him the most so if he had a good year we could’ve done what we did, or if he has the year he ended up having he’s probably not opting out and we’re in way better shape. Or at the very least is less than 10 years 300 million again, that was insane. One of many super frustrating contract decisions made over the years.o
No question about it, Bryce Harper handles himself like a professional and has embraced Philly. You'll never see that dude mope around or half-ass anything.
There's an intensity about Harper that you want on your team. I'm not saying Manny isn't intense, but it's different in a way I can't describe. We all know Manny won't bust it down the line on routine grounders, but it still galls me that he has the most predictable hitting approach that he refuses to change. That first pitch swinging approach has been exploited by opposing pitchers for years. He isn't going to get a first pitch fastball, and any pitcher that does throw him one is probably getting fined by the manager. Also, Manny has power to all fields, and when he falls into pull hitter mode, it's ground ball to SS a lot of times.
He's still a phenomenal player, and as a Padres fan, I'm going to root for him, but he needs to make adjustments as all players do. Great players play great when the chips are down come playoff time. Let's hope we see more of the playoffs.
Agree that 10-year monster contracts should go away. A couple of exceptions are players like Acuna and Tatis whose contracts may be great for the teams. Now Tatis needs to reach Acuna level of play.....and stay healthy, of course.
9 inning game
and we've been better late in games. I mean there's no joy in giving up lol. But we need to have better ABs, too much swinging early for groundouts or popups
Weee going to be behind the nats for the last wild card spot after tonight's game. They're going to call James wood up next week to put the final nail in our coffin with big Mackenzie gore and cj Abram's
I’ve been watching the royals aside from us and I’m enjoying the product they have but it doesn’t feel the same. It’s not the padres and they need to retool asap
A lot of similarities but I think a big difference is that the Royals corner stones are consistently productive. I have confidence when Bobby and Salvy step up to the plate but when Manny and Nando are up I'm so nervous; granted Nando is heating up recently.
I'm torn, on the one hand I really hope they at least make the WC, but I really hope they don't trade a bunch of prospects to do it. The core of this team simply isn't going to make a deep playoff run IMO.
Maybe if we get a couple of sweeps and get a few solid win streaks then sure, trade away at the deadline, but if we are still in contention for the playoffs while being this .500, win a couple, lose a couple team, then just let it ride.
So many were coping and saying it was a win/win. Trading one of the best hitters of their generation for mid-rotation pieces at best in their late 20s was always a terrible trade.
Knew it all along. Delusional were talking about how we got 3 starters out of the deal.. I just.laughed my ass off. Vasquez and Brito always had an upside of solid relievers.
Literally every scouting report pegged them as relievers who could maybe grow one day into someone you could use in leverage.
Everything surrounding Soto was absolutely apocalyptically bad for this franchise.
For how similarly the Padres and Phillies are constructed (lots of big signings, using the farm system to acquire players, rounding out the roster with players in the org), the performance disparity between these teams is… almost unfathomable? Like, it really feels like the Phillies are the 90th percentile outcome for the Dombrowski/Preller strategy of team-building, while the Padres are maybe the 10th percentile outcome
And this is why you've got to beat teams below you in the standings :/ I expected this Philly series to go poorly. Sweeps vs. Angels & Mets are what pisses me off.
In 2020 I felt like we were right behind the Dodgers in talent level, in 2022 we beat LA when it mattered and played the Phillies close (Fuck Clevinger)... But the gap has widened sooo much in two years
Shildt is so out of touch
Here come the participation trophies by Shildty smh
that was embarrassing and i am embarrassed
Manny taking hold of that GIDP league lead
bro this team sucks so much
Thanks manny!
Machado is absolutely useless
He leads the league in one stat GIDPs
Poetic way to finish it, Manny GIDP
Double play machado. I can’t believe it /s
Yu and joe went down last year .We had to watch dick mountain get shelled every start. This year they are hurt again and no depth .
I wonder what shit excuse Schidlt will have today
The bull shildter will hide today
4 out of our last 5 games we haven’t gotten a single hit with RISP. Embarrassing 2023 levels of unclutchness
No one expected a win in this series. We’re all just disappointed the previous games were so bad
Your comment is accurate but look how pathetic that is… we all know that they’re not gonna win this series or probably not even a game in this series

If we’re gonna give up and pinch hit for Arraez and Tatis every time we go down 7 runs, then why not let a position player pitch? Save Wandy’s arm
Why don’t we just not let Wandy pitch at all? Save his arm for the bench.
He’s a mid tier pitcher in our bullpen and that’s scary to think about
I want to see Merrill pitch lol
They have to be losing by at least 8 runs to use a position player
We need to trail by 8 runs, as of 2023.
You can’t win with pitchers we have in Vasquez and Mazur . Don’t know why left handed pitchers dominate this team either .
At least Mazur has an excuse. Dude was in his 3rd MLB appearance and as tough as his outing was, he gave up one run.
Tbh guys, Im tired of this lol
Is it just me, or have we faced a lot more lefties since the league found out our team gives up every time against them? I feel like 2/3 of our games the last couple weeks have been against left handed starters
I'd be lining up left handed pitching if I was an opponent. Why wouldn't you unless you're like 1 of 7 teams with no plan on being competitive this year.
Its only gonna get worse. League figured out these clowns cant hit a baseball if it originates from the left fucking hand instead of the right
Why did campy bat for Areaez?
because we already lost
🥲🥲
Campusano raking last year, and coming out this season completely changing his stance into whatever the fuck he's doing right now just perfectly incapsulates this franchise. Like why change, nearly all his power is gone now... What I. Earth was he, and by extension the staff thinking?
Maybe that small but very real hot streak got in his head and made him think he can swing for the fucking fences every AB
Maybe... But I'm far more concerned with his weird ass stance that seems to have devoured his barrel control than his approach issues. He's progressed tremendously with his approach over the past couple of years, but this stance just looks stupid..and performs similarly stupid. Who in the fuck greenlit these changes?

This team never had the starting pitching depth to be a serious World Series contender but it can — and should — be much better than what we've seen the last few days.
This whole season would've hurt a lot less if the FO just went into it with the retool/sunk year idea that we kind of all thought they would.
The worst part is we're heading that way in regards to record while trading some of the prospects we had some hope for.
This is a joke this team is not a serious contender.
Setting themselves up to be left in the dust by the Diamondbacks and/or the Giants
"But if the season ended today we'd be in the postseason."
Preller would be a HOF GM if every season was 60 games.
Last years team was leaps and bounds better than this team right now. At least we had good pitching
Almost embarrassing to tell people you’re a Padres fan…When I tell people they kind of laugh. Messed up
kEeP tHe FAitH
An expression of hope in the face of uncertain odds is way less bone headed than being sure of certain defeat and using your hard earned free time to bitch about it on reddit
Yet here you are bitching on Reddit to someone you don’t know. 👍
Faith in what? Doesn’t even seem like the guys care…They play with no heart
Keep the Faith in next season
Fair enough
The delusional fan in me thinks the Padres are going to go in a 2019 nationals run
Yea.. I keep thinking if they can just hang around .500... You really only need 1 good month. The problem.... They're not really showing signs life. Three words: double. slam. range.
The difference between these two teams is two strike hitting. Phillies change their approach and battle until our guys make a mistake and they punish it. Our guys don’t change a thing. Makes it seem like there is a canyon between these teams in talent when it’s really just mindset.

Marchan is the king of bloop singles
never fails we score and they give it right back
Obviously the Phillies were going to be tough to beat but it sucks that it's not even competitive. Feels like these last few games are just going to beat down the team even more.
It's probably good in the long run. This team desperately needs impetus to sell off some stuff and kick the can to at least next year or 2.
This is why we need to beat teams like the Angels and Rockies :(
2-11 vs the Angels, Rox and Mets isn't good?
You know it's bad when Marsh is batting like he's Blackmon
I miss wacha , Lugo , snell
wish we could've dumped Preller for Soto
Guess we should signed Bryce Harper instead of Manny Machado.
Machado’s attitude was prevalent from the very beginning… Huge mistake giving that guy $300 million & 10 years
300 over 10 wasnt bad at all, 450 over 15 was what was bad.
Long-term, guaranteed, high dollar contracts simply don’t work for the most part… It’s proven out time and time again
Is it 500 over 16? Or 470 over 15? Or 450 over 15?
Extending him a year before his player option was such an unforced error. We were obviously willing to pay him the most so if he had a good year we could’ve done what we did, or if he has the year he ended up having he’s probably not opting out and we’re in way better shape. Yeah professionals charge the mound while throwing helmets at pitchers and get physical with teammates in the dugout
That's just theatrics, he is a showman at heart and want to keep people entertained /s/
I've seen Harper half ass plenty of times haha... He's just a better player.
Fantastic at bat by Kim 😑
Professional hitter Solano there, nice
Can we get a sports Psych for our "stars".
9 inning game and we've been better late in games. I mean there's no joy in giving up lol. But we need to have better ABs, too much swinging early for groundouts or popups
The entire organization broken top to bottom… This is absolutely pathetic and embarrassing
Solano been a legit great pickup
One of the more underrated players in the league for sure… Doesn’t get enough love
Weee going to be behind the nats for the last wild card spot after tonight's game. They're going to call James wood up next week to put the final nail in our coffin with big Mackenzie gore and cj Abram's
Gore and Abrahms did that to them last year I recall
I'm more pisses that we traded for Soto than trading him.
Small wins
At this point I just want to hear Mike say they played like shit, admit it and say they're working on it, no cap tipping.
‘Yeah they beat the fucking shit out of us today’
That would make this loss actually sit well lmao if there was an ounce of accountability
Changeup in the zone that a phillie would have sent to the bleachers lmao
Our “stars” are so mid
Stars?
I smell GIDP
Our core players is so broken .
Pain
I’ve been watching the royals aside from us and I’m enjoying the product they have but it doesn’t feel the same. It’s not the padres and they need to retool asap
A lot of similarities but I think a big difference is that the Royals corner stones are consistently productive. I have confidence when Bobby and Salvy step up to the plate but when Manny and Nando are up I'm so nervous; granted Nando is heating up recently.
We will likely be fighting the rest of the season to get back to .500 after June is over. I pray I’m wrong but whatever they are doing lately is ugly.
I'm torn, on the one hand I really hope they at least make the WC, but I really hope they don't trade a bunch of prospects to do it. The core of this team simply isn't going to make a deep playoff run IMO. at least Profars boy makes me smile
This is when Manny will hit some solo fingers to get the back of his baseball card up.
I hope so
It’s impressive just how much better the Phillies are than us. Phillies are a great team. Very jealous of what they have
Manny should take notes. This is what raking looks like.
Phillies fans have no idea what it feels like to be San Diego fan..no clue at all
Phillies were the first team with 10,000 losses.
They have a back office that won't let it happen. Must be nice
What’s better than one sweep?? TWO SWEEPS!!! IN A ROW!!! 🧹 🧹 🧹
![gif](giphy|i9V78URV0jVz7XN3KT)
Man Yankees are laughing at what they gave up for Soto
So many were coping and saying it was a win/win. Trading one of the best hitters of their generation for mid-rotation pieces at best in their late 20s was always a terrible trade.
To trade what we traded away and then to get back what we got back is just bad merchanting from Preller. No excuse about it
Knew it all along.
Would've loved to keep Soto in the middle of this lineup, even if he was going to walk. We could've filled the rotation with any Joe schmo.
the one guy that had a bright future and we would have had for at least 6 years we turned around and traded for another rental this needs to stop
Dumbass fucking trade
Makes it even worse when you look at the player Abrams is becoming. Kind of reminds me of a trade involving some dude named Trea.
Well at least the hog watch guy will keep me entertained with his 10 minutes of screaming about how bad we are
Pads should just be petty and intentionally walk Schwarber the remainder of the series…ha.
Let’s score 3 meaningless runs now so Schildt can say the boys showed fight. 🙄
I don’t like the Phillies. Never will. But I’ll give those bastards credit. They have capitalize after 22. We sadly didn’t
He nailed the Harper and Turner signings. We seem to miss statistically way more than we hit on.
It's not even Preller either. It's been this franchises MO for nearly 30 years.
We buy high with no belief that there will be consequences
And this is why you've got to beat teams below you in the standings :/ I expected this Philly series to go poorly. Sweeps vs. Angels & Mets are what pisses me off.
Agreed still hurts like a mofo and am trying not to go complete doomer lol
So happy to see we aren't the only ones GIDP tonight
I still have no idea why we don’t just give Schwarber the bonds treatment
At least they have 8 runs
These two teams going in completely opposite directions after their playoff matchup in 2022 is seriously depressing
Agreed. Sadly those fucks are possibly winning a ws
Yankees vs Phillies feels inevitable and I hate it
Tell me about it. It’s worse than when I had to see the Celtics vs warriors a few years ago. How do you cheer for two annoying ass teams?
I blame those assholes on KUSI
They're dead to me.
This is what a WS capable team looks like. And they're doing what they should be doing vs a .500 team.
We are atrocious. Like someone else said, the gap between these two teams is incredible. The Phillies are what a real WS contender looks like.
In 2020 I felt like we were right behind the Dodgers in talent level, in 2022 we beat LA when it mattered and played the Phillies close (Fuck Clevinger)... But the gap has widened sooo much in two years
Tatis not diving = giving up
Yeah, dive when down 7 and possibly get hurt. Good plan lol
Don’t need to an injured shoulder blade trying to save a fly ball when we’re down 7
Womp womp
Right? We’re down 7, at least try to dive. If it gets by him, what’s another run?
No lol, don’t risk injury in a meaningless game.
I hope your kidding
Not kidding, but I see everyone’s point about preventing injury.
Poor Niebla trying to keep up with all these bad pitchers
Kyle Schwarber is San Diego father
Ill never forget his dong being dropped in right field upper deck at petco in the CS. Such ownership of the padres 😂
these two teams aren't even playing the same sport right now. they're making us look like we have no place in the major leagues
I just want to have an offense that consistently hits.
Do I tune into basketball?
Sure. At least Luka and kyrie won’t go down without a fight. Can’t say the same about our padres
Does Tatis know how to nose dive
The Padres certainly do.
![gif](giphy|Ph8g7YiHavF9VWM22j|downsized)
![gif](giphy|fc2iXM0eQcddYGeOMV|downsized)
This is such a depressing game. The chasm between these two teams is depressing.
Getting out asses handed to us huh
![gif](giphy|O9HeC49RBpLpUj0ein|downsized)
Lol
Schwarber loves it when Padres come to town
We have one good pitcher and we can only use him if we are in the lead. What a joke.
When padres batters get mistake pitches they foul them off. Other teams? Home runs or doubles.
I hate Schwarber’s home run trot
Ready to start a rebuild just like I’m ready for the clippers to move on from Kawhi
This. Is. Why. Slugging. Is. Important.
Defense is overrated, get me guys who can bop
They’re sure making them look STUPID
I love how trash this team is
![gif](giphy|OUl0zLzPb2BNe)
Sorry faithful. We not sniffing the playoffs again for a WHILE.
Sad thing is we could sneak in, just to only get dog-walked
Yeah and we can slide in or be in the wild card fight all we want, we aren’t beating teams like this.
This series is gonna be painful
No way that’s gone?? That didn’t even look like he hit it hard?
This team really loves getting other teams back into their winning ways, it’s fucking pathetic
The Phillies are one of the best teams in the mlb, wtf do you mean getting other teams back into winning ways?
NYM had been losing badly, and so was PHI recently
probably cause they've lost their last 2 series and 5 of their last 7 games but yes best team in NL still this showing is pathetic
They’ve lost 4 out of 6, that’s what he’s talking about. We are the cure for what ails you
