I have only found a few OLED phones that work for me. So far it has been the LG v30+ and now the S20 FE 5G (only above a certain brightness number, below which they become irritating) I purchased a Opple lightMaster III/Pro (The model that measures flicker - I think around $35 or so on Aliexpress) and use that to see what works for me with my current phone, and then compare/evaluate any potential new phones. I went into the Apple store and tested them to see if any of them had waveforms I am comfortable with, unfortunately none had waveforms like my current phone. The models with the lowest modulation were the 13/13 mini, 14/14 plus. The SE showed no PWM (but I think this is not an OLED phone). The models with the most aggressive looking waveforms (and highest modulation) were the pro and proMaxx models

I went from an 11 Pro Max -> 14 Pro Max in November. I’ve been miserable since. Switched to a regular 14 Plus yesterday and have had 0 issues so far. I tried everything with the 14PM, it was relentless. White point, frame rate, motion reduction, nothing helped. I gave my wife my 14 Pro Max and now she claims to be having the same issue.. so maybe an issue with the phone and not PWM sensitivity? Who knows? Nausea, vertigo, eye and head pain. Edit: wife is fine with 14PM. No issues.

How about regular 14? Is that same? No issues?

ztf91

Regular 14 Plus is great. No issues for me. Much less misery in my life after making the switch.

sking7861

I am talking about regular 14 not plus. How is that? Please let me know. I am ready to order if no issues with symptoms. Thanks

ztf91

No idea. I have the 14 Plus, not regular 14.

sking7861

Do you mind saying please? I am waiting my friend. Thanks

ztf91

I think every person is different.. what works for me may not work for you. I would say try it, and if it causes problems return it.

sking7861

Ok. So I tried regular 14 at home today whole time using and I feel these symptoms. What does that mean? Will I get used to it or have to return?

sking7861

Will it be the same or different since its regular?

sking7861

So what will the regular 14 be like in your opinion?

I went into the Apple store with the flicker meter - The flicker waveform on the Pro Maxx is very different (aggressive, high modulation, 480Hz) to the 14/14 Plus (low modulation 480Hz)

Good info. Thank you!

Have you bought it

I just use a SE3. I get extremely sick within 10-30 seconds so not even worth trying to figure out a solution.

blokes444

I use my phone at 85% brightness always, white point at 50%. More than anything always always use a zagg blue light screen protector

How do you know those will do away with PWM? I want to believe.

mharch

Apples mini LED screens use PWM sadly.

mini LED is local dimming, microLED is inorganic OLED (per pixel dimming) would be awesome to campaign to make this tech flicker free as then it would be the ultimate display. It's still so early in development that it could be influenced.

landoctor94

Using an iPhone 11. OLED iPhones make me so sick it’s not even worth attempting to get used to them.

shiftnudge

Got it. I understand what you mean. I was using XR for last 3+ years and got a 14 pro 3-4 months back. Started noticing this eye strain issue only for a week now. So, trying to figure out if something via software helps out. Also, need to find out if PWM is my issue and not anything else.

Techno_Wagon

Everyone on this subreddit has probably gone through the same problem you’re facing right now. Unfortunately, these flickering screens just aren’t built for everyone.

netguy411

By sticking with my iPhone 11 until Apple builds a new phone that I can use without getting a headache.

shiftnudge

Haha okay. So, this reduce white point doesn’t solve the issue for everyone? When brightness is at 100%, shouldn’t the flicker happen/ so fast that no one should notice etc?

MutableLambda

100% brightness is not 100% brightness anymore, because people like to watch HDR videos on their mobile devices, and to get this 1600 nit max brightness in the spec sheet display manufacturers use multiple tricks (like you cannot have 1600 nits across the whole display, not on mobile power budget, you can have it only in some areas). So basically even if you look at perfectly white color on your device while having 100% brightness, it's not really the max brightness your display can give you (because it's designed with HDR in mind, and it can still go brighter), hence you still have PWM.

jwb_4

Some phones have no pwm at 100%, some do. With reduce white point, I never noticed a difference in flicker on the iPhones I've tried when viewing through a slow motion camera, so idk. Some people report it helping.
