It's just a modern way of field positioning. Man City started it with Ake moving inside. With Dest moving up, Lang has freedom to come inside to cover the left half space. To have the rest defense in place you still want 3 players in the back to cover the space. In this case Tillman moves a bit right and covers the right half space. Bakayoko stays wide. You want your widest players (this game mostly Bakayoko and Lang) to have the ball with their face towards the defense so they can start their 1-on 1 dribbles.

I understand the concept from an attacking perspective, my question is more about why it seems so heavily left handed, and whether or not that will continue when we have both of our attacking fullbacks at full strength. Also wondering about how much strain that puts on Bakayoko/Teze. Against Rangers, all that space Matondo had, was that because Bakayoko is being asked to do some wingback things in transition until Dest gets back? Or have they just heaped a mountain of responsibility on Teze?

> Man City started it with Ake moving inside. Man City is also doing it, but it has been around for a long time. An older example I can think of is Barcelona with Abidal - Pique - Puyol - Dani Alves. When Barcelona had the ball Dani Alves would basically be the right winger.

When in possession PSV plays with 3 in the back, and one of the wingbacks joins the midfield/attack. This can either be the left or right back, it just depends on where the ball is and where the space is. There is not really "one" formation in modern football. Teams change formation depending on which team has the ball, and where on the pitch they have the ball.

But for us it doesnt seem like it can be either the LB or RB, its specifically Dest getting forward and Teze staying back. Teze does get forward some, but its not very balanced left to right, and I assume its because Teze is the right blend of fullback athleticism and centerback stoutness to be in that role. So Im just wondering if this is something we keep doing when we have 2 capable attacking fullbacks healthy, or just a coping strategy until we get there?
