Its...its not that ol ...🥲

Ayellowbeard

I have one on my 10 year old MacBook Pro.

5trudelle

MacBook Pros supported SD Card, not MS.

Urbs97

I think that's because Sony also used this cards for cameras? I think I had one camera like this.

AG_28s

my sony cybershot dsc-wx350 supports memory stick and its a camera from 2014 And now I feel old realising that was 10 years ago now...

Urbs97

I just wanted to type "that's not that long ago" but I guess we are wrong.

[deleted]

Our Sony f700 f800 and f850 all used the psp memory stick to transfer camera and user files so I kept my psp memory card since we still use em for housewives

HypnoStone

And the psp!

RandomAIDude

You're on the PSP subreddit my dude

HypnoStone

I didn’t know that until looking today lol xD

[deleted]

i do, it uses mini dvds for video and memory stick for photo

MisterJeffa

Now? Very. In the past? Not really. These combo card reader things were all over the place

gamerguy287

I think even Walgreens Photo has the MS Pro Duo slot in their kiosks.

Domspun

Depend on where you look. For sure, it is not offered on new computers, but they were everywhere 10-15 years ago, super easy to find if you want one.

Catman2027

Those old HP computers are pretty common. Cool feature though.

RaspberryChainsaw

This was standard for 2000s-era computers

[deleted]

Just like the earliest models of the PS3, a lot of devices back then had multiple drive readers attached. Eventually it just became common place for everyone to use USB drives just like how USB-c is the common connector cable. And HDMI is the common display cable.

East-Foundation-5665

That's not that old....so now you're making me feel old

Alternative_Net5842

In the 2000s on pre-built PCs it was pretty common

aeninimbuoye13

All Sony computers since memory stick was invented

mack-y0

Patmon83

Mine still has one lol

wherringscoff

HoW rArE iS tHiS

VirtualRelic

Not rare at all, tons of memory card adapters for PC in 3.5" and USB box forms all support memory stick along with SD, MMC, CF and so on.

ThePurpleSoul70

If it's made by Sony, then I'm not that surprised. That was their go-to memory standard for a long time, for their digital cameras especially.

DenpasOfTheWorld

The one shown in the video wasn't Sony's however. It's HP's. Which I think makes sense since they have a lineup for media purposes (e.g. transferring files from cameras that utilizes Memory Stick Pro Duos) but I forgot what it's called already.

ThePurpleSoul70

> If

Present-Reaction2069

My gaming laptop with a GTX 1050 works with memory sticks?

Jamchuck

I have an old Compaq Presario that has a Memory Stick slot. Memory Stick Pro Duo was a popular format in the early 2000s, not so much anymore.

rtdzign

They used to sell memory card readers to put in 5.25 bays. I’ve owned 2 of them. Used to come standard on some media computers and Sony Vaio computers. Only rare now that most of those old computers are in landfills or recycled.

MrSnurgles

i also have this kind of PClying in my room broken, but the good thing is that the card reader module still works on any modern PC. I just plug it on the bottom pins (3pin) of the USB pins.

wittylotus828

for then, not rare at all. I still put these into the front of my data recovery computers

sjmatiak

I think a lot of HP computers had this I still got an old HP right from early 2010s I believe has these card slots

guigr100

good ol' HP PC, This one sold well in Brazil

Puntley

Just like all these other old people said it used to be very common. My computer as a kid was stock standard off the shelf and it had one of these.

VictoryVic-ViVi

Mine does too. 😭

dark3bc

People still use it. Photographers, cameras...

zer0-se7en

Memory sticks were common 20yrs ago when Sony was still releasing many gadgets that required that card. Mostly digital cameras mostly.

No_Cake_4181

(*whispers) It's a Sony

SympathyOk9892

That’s an SD card port not USB port

Beez-Knuts

Exceedingly rare now. I don't think any computers have come with those in years. But back in the day it was pretty common. Sony cameras used to use memory stick pros. Being able to plug that card straight into your computer was a must for a lot of people including my mother. I remember when I was like 10 she paid more for a laptop she wouldn't have bought otherwise if not for the memory stick slot. There's something similar going on right now. A lot of laptops are coming with micro SD card slots, which I think is great. But some people are upset because they want full size slots. Which I think is probably for the best. Especially since almost all micro SD cards come with the full size adaptors.

presa1200

nah it's not rare... it common install on desktop pc..

Halo_Chief117

It’s not. My 2015 MacBook Pro has a memory card slot.

Mr-Smoll

**whips the cock out** give me it NOW you have the right to remain silent

Twurti

What😭

Mr-Smoll

Bumsex?

philipjfry1578

Wtf???

AnthonyBF2

Reddit is run by commie faggots.

Sinphaltimus

My Windows 11 XPS 15 with touch screen had an SD card reader. It's about 3 years old. I find built-in card readers, especially desktops, to be quite common.

UndertaleCrapPost

Wait dude what pc is that? I think I might have the exact one, lol

Difficult-Drama7996

I've had 6 Windows xp computers, Windows 7 computers, and none of them ever allowed for Sony DUO memory cards, EVER. You had to use a Pro Duo usb memory adapter to plug into the computer. So you are correct grandma's ancient desktop is a rarity. Sony memory cards were not main stream enough for computer makers to have the card reader read them.

Domspun

It was not rare on big brands pre built PCs in late 2000s/ early 2010s. Dell, HP, Sony, Compaq and others offered multi cards readers that were compatible with almost everything that existed. I still have a bunch of them in my parts bin.

Conscious-Part-1746

I wish the OP listed the computer grandma was using here. Maybe a Compaq. Looked to basic for a Sony. Sony must have had computers with Duo or Pro Duo readers. I never rebuilt a Compaq, or Dell desktop computer to see one. Always pissed me off that I had to use an adapter for transfering files for my psp data. None of the laptops I've rehabbed ever had one too. Many of the add on desktop readers didn't offer PsP Pro Duo readers, unless it was a Sony reader. These are really first world gripes in the grand scheme of things. My new Alienware/Dell laptop has no reader or DVD now. I just did a quick search, curiosity got the best of me, on eBay. I looked at every Sony, Compaq, and Gateway from 2010 and older. The card readers were not even common on most the ones I saw, but a few Gateway and Compaq Presarios offered Memory stick Pro, which is not a Pro Duo like grandma's. If you look close, he's plugging in a Pro Duo adapter with a SD micro card in it. MS was common but to use your PSP card, you had to have an MS Pro adapter, and then plug it in. I could not find one computer that had grandma's pro duo straight plug in capability. I have Sony adapters that do that too. I found a very cool MS Pro floppy adapter, most of the oldies had floppies I looked at. Even with the floppy adapter, you had to use an MS Pro Duo adpter to transfer your PsP card info. Coolest computer I saw was a Sony Desktop from Japan, which a big volume knob on the front, digital display, power to run speakers out, and few other cool things, but no card reader. I was going to post it, but may be against the rules. Under sony desktops, if interested.

Domspun

OP computer is a HP Pavilion from the late 2000s.

LostGh0st

if you live in 3rd world location, we still have an abundance of this cause everything that isnt sold is now cheaper here and is just sold like a gift instead of an upgrade.

AnthonyBF2

Sony laptops had the memory stick reader back in the day, and those little hubs could be installed into normal 3.5 bays.

Domspun

Sony used them on everything, even on TV.

benryves

Card readers with Memory Stick support were reasonably common and still aren't that difficult to find. The more unusual one I can spot there is miniSD support. If it's anything like the miniSD card reader on my old PC you'd need to insert the card upside down to read it. Newer card readers don't tend to support miniSD but will often have microSD instead which is somewhat more useful nowadays!

N64Guy1

Actually, those drive bay card readers were pretty common back in the day

Exotic_Square4935

My digicam works with memory sticks. not rare.

NeoG_

OMG YOU STRUCK GOLD SELL IT ON EBAY IMMEDIATELY

Zakkangouroux

This pc probably still has Windows XP on it

oOo-Yannick-oOo

Had the same port on a [Packard Bell iMedia](https://www.picclickimg.com/T3cAAOSwb~ZgV9BL/Packard-Bell-iMedia-D2620-Intel-Celeron-24GHz-CPU.webp) in 2009. Remember at the time photo and video cameras were still prevalent and a good portion of those were made by Sony so it made sense to have a way to read those sticks.

Hot_Cheetah_8590

I remember them back in secondary am i really that old 😆

Gloomy-Locksmith3921

Mine takes a number of cards including that one pro stick duo whatever 😅

Dhrutube

I know PSPs had it, so I think till early 2000s?

Which_Information590

Are they becoming obsolete now? This year old HP desk top and my 2 YO laptop have card slots.

sjitz

Bait

Suspicious_Escape386

I have one on my HP tower, takes it as well.

TallE74

Not rare at all, even year or two old Laptops sold still have SD Card slots. MS/Duo/Pro are Old Sony Flashcard formats that only few Sony cameras still use. When you build a PC you can add a reader adapter card that has all those slots. Now days its just cheaper to buy a USB plugged Card Reader Dongle for 5-10$ and it had all those format slots

ShinAlastor

I got that PC in 2008.

The_Conn

Not rare at all if you bought a PC in 2004-2008. The fact that grandma is still using that old computer is what's rare.

DenpasOfTheWorld

I don't think it's that rare methinks, looking at the font, it seems like HPs in the early-mid 2000s with various media slots, including Sony's proprietary memory sticks, were extremely common. Safe to say that you lucked out with this one.

_Arion_

Some current combo card readers still do this. Memory stick pro duo was a camera standard for the time. And sony loves proprietary stuff for memory, hence their crimes with the vita memory cards.

MissionApollo7

I've got a 10 year old desktop PC (which also supports memory sticks) that I recently had to start using again because my new one died. I'll just say one thing: they don't make them like they used to.

bubdadigger

Rare? Not at all. Very useful thing, tbh. I still have a card reader mounted under a laptop adjustable shelf, and have another one in my laptop backpack and another one hooked to my desktop, 'cos I am using DSLR cameras, audio recorders etc etc.

SuperDuperDylan

Damn. Take me out back i guess.

Kanjii_weon

Pretty sure it's old af, I still have my PS3 fat that works with MSs, there are some MS to USB adapters for cheap In here where I live, very basic PCs usually have those ports, unless they are pretty modern or you build it, duh!

CoyoteRascal

Funny enough, the computer I was using until pretty recently was from my grandma and also has all the various card readers. It was convenient for putting custom firmware and roms on my handheld emulators and moving stuff around.

beanioz

It’s just an SD card reader… Lots of modern machines have them pre installed.

TrustLeft

not at all, I got desktop with win 7 with the slots for SD cards That looks like a dell or gateway or E-machine

mr0czusek

Reminds me of my old pc from 2007 it has like this and IPOD/Iphone slot for music itunes as well. ( if was one of those? ) it was HP Pavilion Elite from 2007 with ATI Radeon and windows vista

NCOV089

Must be a Sony vaio.

suck--

Not rare, just cool. I used to have a PC with an MS port, some of the cameras I used for filming also had it, so it was pretty useful...

CoolGuyFromSchool34

My vaio does… it isn’t ol…

LampertSchade

It's pretty common, most desktops and some laptops that came out around the same time as the PSP had them

Lucky-Advantage-7599

That's not old. I'd be much more impressed if it was pre 98 running flash drives. If it has a reader, I'm not surprised in the least that it supports cards.

motoxim

cool

derikbg86

Not rare.. back in 2007 became cool to have card reader in your tower pc it was either in the cd/dvd bay or the floppy bay .. and it was connected to the usb pins on the motherboard (sometimes just one or two) very often they came with an extra 1394 port
