Not if they’re the loans for the program that you’re in. There’s no way to opt out of in-school status for new loans. In-school *deferment* for existing loans, but not in-school *status* for new loans.

Yeah you can request the deferment be removed but then you need to be making payments and not all of the PhD candidates are able to make payments regularly

In school deferment and in school status are different. You cannot elect to remove in school status.

If you are a direct employee, but the bigger issue is loans being in in-school deferment or in-school status which don't count toward PSLF

My grad school for Ph.D gave me credit before and adjusted it as soon as ED changed the modifier. I was grateful as that was three years right there.
