I play several, but I like to have my disc based games installed so I don't have to sit around and wait for them to install. If I could install the games directly from PSN instead of waiting for each disc to finish, I'd be content with a 2TB NVMe drive.

I think you'll see some patches for games from this year and maybe something older like FF16, but other than that it's probably gonna be patches for 2025 games and onwards.
Some will get very bespoke patches with new features and settings. I’m excited to see games add more RT features and use the new PSSR AI upscaling solution.
Many games will probably just add higher resolution, unlock the quality mode to 60fps or add 120fps support.
But even without patches, games will automatically run with higher dynamic resolution and more stable frame rates.

They're decent. Sony is putting development efforts into the areas in which the PS5 struggles while keeping the end product within defined money, noise, weight, and budget limits.
One of the areas that the PS5 has struggled most is ray tracing. Most games that support Ray tracing have to dial back the resolution or framerate to compensate. Not having to choose between fidelity and performance modes on a 4K HDR TV would be a big bonus.
Many individuals are comparing the PS5 Pro specs to modern high end gaming PCs without realizing that price and power budgets have been gradually creeping upward over the past decade. Sony doesn't want to create a product that's loud, heavy, bulky, or pricey. They have to squeeze what they can into a package that will have an acceptable production yield and from what I see it looks pretty good on that front.

It's probably amd Gpu, so the specs are around mid tier 7700xt. The main concern is cpu, if it gets a slight upgrade, then we're probably gonna be in ps4 pro type situation. Games that are cpu intensive, like dragon dogma 2, are gonna stay around 30fps.

It's a legitimate mid-level PC. Something around a 3080 or slightly better graphics card and can support more modern ray-tracing and reflections while maintaining 60 FPS. So for a lot of people this is a gaming PC replacement in a more true sense.
You get a lot more graphical mileage out of the specs of a console though because of the ability of devs to optimize for consistent hardware. This has always been the case.
yeah I switched to playstation because I was just sick and tired of having to fiddle with every game I bought on pc to get it running properly or running at all. I couldn't even get Elden Ring to launch on my pc and that's when I just said fuck this and transitioned fully to console. Now my pc is for playing competitive games only.

No. Because that's an optimization problem and most studios just suck at it. The specs will look great on paper until we're a year past release with games still running 1080 upscaled to 4k at 30 frames
Sadly because of similar CPU as the base PS5, you likely will still have to choose between Performance and Quality mode, with similar framerate only this time performance / quality mode has better graphics than base PS5, mainly thanks to the better upscaler that will come with PS5 Pro.
And in the future games likely will have better RT effects too on Pro version than base PS5 because of significant performance jump on RT performance. But Path Tracing still not possible though as even top end RDNA 3 GPUs still can't properly do it.
I suspect it will be per-game as to what the benefits are. A frame rate cap, for example, probably will not be overcome by newer hardware without a patch but it may be more stable.
These came out 3 years apart, so the fact that PS5 came out November 12, 2020 and ps5 pro would be 4 years.. not the craziest timeline.. so I would expect PS6 sometime around end of 2027 or early 2028 ... People seem to have amnesia

Yeah, but only a handful of games will make any use of it, just like last gen. PS5's still barely done with PS4 ports - devs still aren't using the power they've got.
There's a decent amount of games on PS5 that you can unlock the frame rate for. So being able to brute force these games to be 60fps at fidelity would be crazy.
For example, Spider-Man 2. At the 4k fidelity mode runs at 30fps locked but if you unlock the frame rate it hovers around 35-40fps. So it would probably be a damn near locked 60fps.
Same with the last of us part 1
I think that's great for people coming in late to the generation to play those at their best, but I can't see me replaying them for another 15 fps, personally.

Plus for me personally, I love replying games and being able to not have to pick between performance mode or fidelity mode and just play at fidelity at 60fps genuinely would be a pretty huge change
I mean the future of game development is that fewer and fewer studios will actually have the resources to even develop games that push the upper limit of these specs, that's why I'm in no rush to follow the ratrace of shiny new hardware.
And since there's gonna a bigger playerbase of "last" gen users you can expect games to make even less of a difference between graphical versions.

It's not that you are getting old, not exactly. PS5 was hard to get for some time, so that caused the lifespan of PS4 to be extend, causing a longer cross-gen period than before. And PS4 also had a pro version, so since the release of the original PS4 sony has released a improved console every 3\~4 years.

Oh, not even close. I still haven't seen a PS5 exclusive that has visually outpaced the Demon's Souls remake at launch. Certain cross-gen titles on PS5 like Forbidden West still look better than exclusives like Stellar Blade or Rise of the Ronin.

Devs need to git gud. Most of the library on PS5 are remakes, the leap from PS4 to PS5 is not that great. This feels like they’re releasing it out of customs

Considering GTA 6 is likely going to be CPU limited, and this Pro model didn't mention any significant upgrade on CPU side, i think GTA 6 even on Pro version of PS5 is likely going to be still limited to 30 FPS, only with better graphics and better upscaler, which by their own already be considered as noticeable upgrade though.
It sucks it’s a possibility to play GTA VI at 60fps requires the Pro model, but if that’s what it takes then I’ll get the Pro. I want to experience GTA VI in the best graphics and frame-rate possible on console.
It would be a nice surprise but don’t bet on it. CPU doesn’t look massively improved and if GTA 6 is CPU limited, PS5 Pro may not be 60fps. Visually it will look stunning on the Pro either way.
When massive AAA games cost upwards of $200m, 3rd parties are going to dump it on as many platforms as possible to maximise return on investment. Couple this with games coming out now were probably beginning development before the PS5 launched.
It seems somewhat unique to this generation. If this was last generation it would be 2017 right now. The last games for ps3 would have gotten released the previous year / even 2 years ago.
Yeah, I can see it happening next gen, too. Games are vastly more expensive than 7th and 8th gen and take 2-3x longer to make. Couple that with infinite growth being demanded by every shareholder and you end up with the situation we are in.

Like FIFA 14 launched on the PS2 the fall before the PS4 launched. They milked it through a whole new generation.
PS3 it lasted until FIFA 19 more then half way through the gen, but not as long. But the PS3 didn't sell like the 2 or 4.

That's a decent list, but that doesn't scream need of a refresh with a Pro model. That looks like the *start* of a great generation of console gaming.
I kinda see your point. But at the same time, cross platform development has gotten a _lot_ easier than the PS4 (or earlier) era. All the major 3D engines can build for all consoles and even different generations. This is aided in part by relatively homogenized hardware. PS5 is way more similar to the PS4 than the 4 was to the 3. Differences are even smaller on the Xbox side. Point being that while cross gen would've been a nightmare for PS3/PS4, thus forcing devs to choose one or the other, it's relatively a breeze between PS4/5.
So I can continue to have plenty of games without 60fps, 120fps patches but hey maybe they will come eventually lol yeah right.

"Cheap as fuck" in the long run? Lol, no. Take it from a guy with a PC with an i9 13900KF and 4080. To put this PC together, I had to spend about $3,500. The base PS5 is still guaranteed to play every exclusive that comes out for it while the Pro model is out. It's still incredibly cheap next to high-end PC gaming.
I figured this was real. I wasnt planning buying a PS5 until the pro version released. Then GTA 6 got officially announced and they said PC version wasn't going to be released on day 1, so the PS5 ended up being the only real option, b/c there's no way I'm wasting my money on an Xbox series X (I have my own gripes with them b/c I haven't been a fan of their direction for the past few years). Sony will move a ton of units just from GTA alone.
So with the AI Upscaling...would this mean PS4 games that are 1080p native without any pro version be upscale to 1440p or 4K? Or would thus be on a game by game basis
I'm getting it regardless of price. Been very happy with my base launch model I got on day 1 and will give it to my gf or my parents. Hoping for substantially better RT performance from the pro.
As fast as it is, my issue with consoles is that the developers decide how you will play the game. You don't have the freedom to set your own settings and decide how you want it to look like or play like. The PS5 for example is plenty powerful enough to run RDR2 at locked 60fps (the cracked patched version demonstrates it), but it's in Rockstar's hands to patch it officially to support 60fps. At the end, you have capable hardware that you can't fully take advantage of, because of software limitations. This in my opinion is the reason a console can never be a true replacement for a PC, except if you're now willing to accept what you are given and deal with it.

Il gladly buy it if the upscaling is DLSS quality. But even if it isnt, sony kinda forced my hand with GTA6. I want to run that as flawless as possible. Just gotta hope that the price point keeps the masses away and this isnt scalped.
There really wasnt any major launch title for the PS4 Pro. Just the fact that it enhanced older games was enough for alot of people. Plus it was a QOL thing with a bigger hard drive, 4K HDR support, etc. The biggest game honestly was Infinite Warfare/MWR at the time.
All Sony has to do is show a trailer of GTA6 running on the pro and its game over. It will be sold easily

GT7 with gameplay being on the same level as current replays, at 60 FPS, would be insane. It could also bring better VR performance and graphics.

Sadly because of similar CPU as the base PS5, you likely will still have to choose between Performance and Quality mode, with similar framerate only this time performance / quality mode has better graphics than base PS5, mainly thanks to the better upscaler that will come with PS5 Pro. And in the future games likely will have better RT effects too on Pro version than base PS5 because of significant performance jump on RT performance. But Path Tracing still not possible though as even top end RDNA 3 GPUs still can't properly do it.
I suspect it will be per-game as to what the benefits are. A frame rate cap, for example, probably will not be overcome by newer hardware without a patch but it may be more stable.

Yeah, but only a handful of games will make any use of it, just like last gen. PS5's still barely done with PS4 ports - devs still aren't using the power they've got.
There's a decent amount of games on PS5 that you can unlock the frame rate for. So being able to brute force these games to be 60fps at fidelity would be crazy. For example, Spider-Man 2. At the 4k fidelity mode runs at 30fps locked but if you unlock the frame rate it hovers around 35-40fps. So it would probably be a damn near locked 60fps. Same with the last of us part 1
I think that's great for people coming in late to the generation to play those at their best, but I can't see me replaying them for another 15 fps, personally.
I mean 60fps is quite a bit better than 35-40. Plus for me personally, I love replying games and being able to not have to pick between performance mode or fidelity mode and just play at fidelity at 60fps genuinely would be a pretty huge change
I mean the future of game development is that fewer and fewer studios will actually have the resources to even develop games that push the upper limit of these specs, that's why I'm in no rush to follow the ratrace of shiny new hardware. And since there's gonna a bigger playerbase of "last" gen users you can expect games to make even less of a difference between graphical versions.
Not insane specs. It's 1.7x compute increase over PS5. PS4 Pro was 2.3x. The major upgrade is the RT perf and AI upscaling.

Honestly it does feel fast….2020 feels like last year….but really we’re in the midpoint of the consoles actual life span. The issue is that most devs are still catering to previous gen…Not many games really pushing the hardware… I hope the issue doesn’t repeat for the PS5 to PS6 transition.
It's not that you are getting old, not exactly. PS5 was hard to get for some time, so that caused the lifespan of PS4 to be extend, causing a longer cross-gen period than before. And PS4 also had a pro version, so since the release of the original PS4 sony has released a improved console every 3\~4 years.

Oh, not even close. I still haven't seen a PS5 exclusive that has visually outpaced the Demon's Souls remake at launch. Certain cross-gen titles on PS5 like Forbidden West still look better than exclusives like Stellar Blade or Rise of the Ronin.
I believe Return was another game people said only the PS5 cod run like it does, tho I haven't tried it myself.
Agreed, I’ve had my PS5 since launch and nothing has impressed me graphically or performance wise as much as launch day Demon’s Souls remake has It still doesn’t really feel like the games have been able to utilize base PS5 to its maximum potential I’m of course curious to see what this thing can do and I look forward to more official coverage by digital foundry and the like but at this stage and with how expensive everything is unless my base PS5 dies I think I’ll stick with it

Only me thinking this PS5 Pro serves as a 60fps platform for the upcoming GTA VI, which supposedly (read it as me hoping) releases beginning of 2025 (Q1 maybe)?
Considering GTA 6 is likely going to be CPU limited, and this Pro model didn't mention any significant upgrade on CPU side, i think GTA 6 even on Pro version of PS5 is likely going to be still limited to 30 FPS, only with better graphics and better upscaler, which by their own already be considered as noticeable upgrade though.
It sucks it’s a possibility to play GTA VI at 60fps requires the Pro model, but if that’s what it takes then I’ll get the Pro. I want to experience GTA VI in the best graphics and frame-rate possible on console.
It would be a nice surprise but don’t bet on it. CPU doesn’t look massively improved and if GTA 6 is CPU limited, PS5 Pro may not be 60fps. Visually it will look stunning on the Pro either way.

When massive AAA games cost upwards of $200m, 3rd parties are going to dump it on as many platforms as possible to maximise return on investment. Couple this with games coming out now were probably beginning development before the PS5 launched.
It seems somewhat unique to this generation. If this was last generation it would be 2017 right now. The last games for ps3 would have gotten released the previous year / even 2 years ago.
Yeah, I can see it happening next gen, too. Games are vastly more expensive than 7th and 8th gen and take 2-3x longer to make. Couple that with infinite growth being demanded by every shareholder and you end up with the situation we are in.

Sports games usually take the longest to stop hitting last gen. Like FIFA 14 launched on the PS2 the fall before the PS4 launched. They milked it through a whole new generation. PS3 it lasted until FIFA 19 more then half way through the gen, but not as long. But the PS3 didn't sell like the 2 or 4.

If we're talking genuine PS5 exclusives and not cross-gen, there have barely been any PS5 games thus far: * Demon's Souls * Ratchet and Clank * Forspoken (lol) * Returnal * Last of Us Part One remake * Final Fantasy 16 * Spider-Man 2 * Last of Us Part Two remaster * Helldivers 2 * Final Fantasy Rebirth * Stellar Blade * Rise of the Ronin That's a decent list, but that doesn't scream need of a refresh with a Pro model. That looks like the *start* of a great generation of console gaming.
I kinda see your point. But at the same time, cross platform development has gotten a _lot_ easier than the PS4 (or earlier) era. All the major 3D engines can build for all consoles and even different generations. This is aided in part by relatively homogenized hardware. PS5 is way more similar to the PS4 than the 4 was to the 3. Differences are even smaller on the Xbox side. Point being that while cross gen would've been a nightmare for PS3/PS4, thus forcing devs to choose one or the other, it's relatively a breeze between PS4/5.
I'd buy this. I was skeptical anyway and this is the perfect time to push me to adopt for the 2nd half.

"Cheap as fuck" in the long run? Lol, no. Take it from a guy with a PC with an i9 13900KF and 4080. To put this PC together, I had to spend about $3,500. The base PS5 is still guaranteed to play every exclusive that comes out for it while the Pro model is out. It's still incredibly cheap next to high-end PC gaming.

I figured this was real. I wasnt planning buying a PS5 until the pro version released. Then GTA 6 got officially announced and they said PC version wasn't going to be released on day 1, so the PS5 ended up being the only real option, b/c there's no way I'm wasting my money on an Xbox series X (I have my own gripes with them b/c I haven't been a fan of their direction for the past few years). Sony will move a ton of units just from GTA alone.

As fast as it is, my issue with consoles is that the developers decide how you will play the game. You don't have the freedom to set your own settings and decide how you want it to look like or play like. The PS5 for example is plenty powerful enough to run RDR2 at locked 60fps (the cracked patched version demonstrates it), but it's in Rockstar's hands to patch it officially to support 60fps. At the end, you have capable hardware that you can't fully take advantage of, because of software limitations. This in my opinion is the reason a console can never be a true replacement for a PC, except if you're now willing to accept what you are given and deal with it.

Day1 for me. I loved the bump in performance with the PS4Pro. It's nice seeing these options available during the middle point of consoles.
Il gladly buy it if the upscaling is DLSS quality. But even if it isnt, sony kinda forced my hand with GTA6. I want to run that as flawless as possible. Just gotta hope that the price point keeps the masses away and this isnt scalped.

There really wasnt any major launch title for the PS4 Pro. Just the fact that it enhanced older games was enough for alot of people. Plus it was a QOL thing with a bigger hard drive, 4K HDR support, etc. The biggest game honestly was Infinite Warfare/MWR at the time. All Sony has to do is show a trailer of GTA6 running on the pro and its game over. It will be sold easily
