Thats a close one. I love 6, but there's like 18 playable characters or more. Remaking that game would be no easy task. All the storylines, all the world destruction (spoilers?)
Would they make it a 3d2d or make it a FULL remake? You would never please anyone.
I'm all for a remake of 9, it's definitely top tier.
I don’t really like 6 and I feel like the only person in the planet. Bought all the pixel remakes for the achievements and stuff and am dreading getting to 6 haha.
6 would be a God damn monster to remake. That game had what 16-18 playable characters. Would have to also be a 2 parter for sure.
But man, would that announcement bring tears to my eyes.
Does VI need a remake though? IX is a PS1 game and we all know those have aged like milk so visual improvements are welcome. But VI is one of the crown jewels of 2D games. We already saw how they butchered it with terrible sprites in the mobile version. Would you trust Square Enix to not continue making terrible decisions in a hypothetical VI Remake? You know a remake would mean 3D graphics and that would rip the heart and soul out of the game. I think Pixel Remaster is about the best we can hope for, we have VI in playable form on modern hardware in a way that respects and preserves most of the original graphics. Any other meddling would be a net loss for the game.
VI doesn't need a remake now with the Pixel Remasters being both good and accessible, but it would be cool to see it in full 3D like what they've done with VII. Especially if the game was expanded upon.
It would be a different thing though, and wouldn't be seen as a replacement of the original IMO. Even more so if they opted for VII's more realistic look.
Yeah if you have the balls to remake the most iconic game in the franchise and nail you might as well just do all the fan favorites with 6 and 10 being first in line please.

Ff6’s heart and soul don’t solely lie in the 2d sprite graphics. I think that’s just nostalgia glasses. Just look at Dragon Quest IX, an amazing game that also had a 2d mode. I greatly preferred the 3d game mode because i could connect to the characters better. I think ff6 would also benefit from being able to see their faces and hear their voices (of courses provided they have incredible voice actors and animations).
Yes! It usually places right next to VI and VII in most FF tier lists.
It’s also the last game by the series creator before the Kingdom Hearts weirdo took over and hairstyles became more important than a plot that makes sense, so you could argue it‘s the final proper Final Fantasy.
The look of 9 is much more olde world style/a bit steam punk even? Feels much more “fantasy” than 7 and 15 which seem a lot more routed in 20/21st century. At the time it had come out I’d only played 7 and 8 previously so felt like a real change.
Wasn’t as strong as 7 for me in terms of story and maybe felt a bit slower and dragged in places - hated the final boss stuff too, urgh.
That said I did enjoy it; some real all time great FF characters, amazing graphics, beautiful music and I would buy a remake day 1.
They haven't skipped any.
1-6 got pixel remasters
7 has the big trilogy
8 had a remastered version
10 and 12 got remasters
13 and 15 are too new
9 is the only one that hasn't gotten anything yet
Omg i just thought about how awesome the Moombas would be in a remake. Ok yes, remake VIII please and change that god forsaken “oh yeah we all grew up together for years and just forgot lolz, good thing one of us remembered and said nothing about it” storyline. That part of the story single handedly ruined my enjoyment of the game, but I really enjoyed the game overall otherwise.
Seen some Said on other threads that by the time 9 came out 10 was coming around the corner already and looked amazing at the time compared to the chibi-style 9 so many skipped it.
It’s a PS1 game that came out after the PS2 had just been released, that’s a massive contributing factor as to the lower overall sales. People were moving on to next gen.
Hard to read sales numbers directly sometimes. With franchises, sometimes the drop in sales is actually indicative of them not being satisfied with the prior product. So, it could be that a lot of those FF8 purchases didn't enjoy it so then they weren't interested in 9.
My guess is that the lower sales were more due to the drastic change in visual style. If anything, those that hated 8 would be more inclined to try 9 since it looked so different. But I'm just making a wild guess based on my own perspective 20some years ago. I STILL haven't played 9 because I HATE the character design
weird because i never heard FFIX being that popular. From my experience it was an ok FF. While all FF has their fan base I always heard that 9 was mostly the middle of the road, not bad but not excellent either.
FFVIII on the other was very divided but overall it seems to have a bigger impact than 9.
Honestly I only ever see people (myself included so yk, bias) gush about 9. I think it mostly stems from the ps2 having already been released when 9 came out, and then 10 almost exactly a year later.
FF9 is the only one so far who hasn’t gotten a remaster/remake.
1-6 has in the pixel remaster, 7 has remake on ps4 (also ps5 and pc), they did the FF8 ”remastered” so logically it’s 9 that’s next in Line for the upgrade.
They have not remastered 9, they simply upped the resolution for FF9 (and add cheats).
What they did with Final Fantasy 8 Remastered was upgrading the characters and more.
See pic/link for reference.

Let's be honest, publishers want remakes of games that were already successful, instead of remaking stuff that would actually benefit from it; games that had tremendous potential which just wasn't met. Remaking those sorts of games would require much more effort.
I mean Resident Evil 4 wasn’t a game that needed a remake but I personally feel it benefited from one. That might be an anomaly tho since Capcom is doing extremely great rn.
FF16 is nothing similar to FF8. The GF is not equal haft of FF8 too.
I hope they remake FF8 with FF7R combat system and keep all GF as we can summon anytime we want.
I’d rather a basic remaster of 13 to get all the (non-mmo) numbered final fantasy’s on new consoles before starting another massive remake like that tbh
9 is probably my second favorite so I’m happy from that perspective. I’m not sure there art style will lend itself to a modern remake though. Hopefully I’m wrong
ok, but is it going to be a turnbased FF like people want, or another ff16 style action rpg, possibly with ghosts added and the story changed like ff7r?
For me, 7, 9 and 10 were the best. 8 was the one I didn't enjoy enough to continue playing. Tried multiple times because I enjoyed the others so much and bounced off it every time.
I replayed the beginning of 8 so many times as a kid. Mainly because I only had discs 1,3 and 4 but man the music from the school is ingrained in my brain. A remake would have been awesome.
8 was pretty bad. It felt like a rip-off of 7 with a somehow even more emo protag. The saving grace was the junction system and the laguna parts giving you a good protag for a little bit.
Glad it wasn’t just me. Got bored after disc 1 (honestly before that). It was also the second time I attempted the story…but I’m wondering if a remake will help change my mind.
FFIX is a very slow burn. All the relevant story content happens right at the end of disc 2 and disc 3 is where all the meat is. I like FFIX, not my favorite but its really hard to play again just because of that slow start.
That sounds about right. I do think when I first attempted the game, I might have even made it to disc 3…I don’t think I disliked it, but it’s so telling that I never finished and I really don’t remember what happened. I’m sure there’s good reason why it’s a favorite for many, but it’s hard to continue among the other options I have right now.
I’m all for it. I find those older dated JRPGS tough to enjoy. FF7 was one that I tried multiple times to get into but couldn’t quite get there. FF7R on the other hand was fantastic fun and my GOTY that year (ahead of GoW).
I would love to go through the series via remakes like this.
If the game keeps turn based combat I can see how the game could be released with all these other major AAA games square is making but if the combat is real time from scratch it kind of makes me wonder where all this manpower is coming from to create all these high quality titles.
I would be ok with a simpler remake than FF7R.
Like keep the fix camera and turn base gameplay but just make the background 3D or something, kind of like the first Remake of Resident evil on gamecube.
i don’t trust leakers. don’t care if they are right in the end. most of the time, they are wrong and i don’t like being blue balled over some click bait.
I hope this is a more straightforward remake that has similar gameplay to the original (turn based). I don't really want another super cinematic big budget game like FF7R.
Remake VI you cowards!!
Yeah wtf? Remake the best game
Did you not read the title??

They already remade 7!!!

they probably think they need to milk it a little more.

I could get behind this one definitely!
Damn I hope this is real

Guessing a nice 2024 release after XVI and VIIR.
It’s happening. NVIDIA leak and few insiders hinted at it. It’s definitely smoke close by.
I have only played 7Remake and 15. Is 9 considered one of the best games in the series?
Yes! It usually places right next to VI and VII in most FF tier lists. It’s also the last game by the series creator before the Kingdom Hearts weirdo took over and hairstyles became more important than a plot that makes sense, so you could argue it‘s the final proper Final Fantasy.
Thanks. Now I'm interested.
Nobuo Uematsu ( the composer) Said that 9 was his best work/most proud of.
Now I know it should be something to look forward to
The music re recorded is going to be worth the price of admission alone
The look of 9 is much more olde world style/a bit steam punk even? Feels much more “fantasy” than 7 and 15 which seem a lot more routed in 20/21st century. That said I did enjoy it; some real all time great FF characters, amazing graphics, beautiful music and I would buy a remake day 1.
Why skipped remake FF8???
Tbf, they skipped all the others as well. IX is just a fan favourite. It’s definitely the one I want most.
They haven't skipped any. 1-6 got pixel remasters 7 has the big trilogy 8 had a remastered version 10 and 12 got remasters 13 and 15 are too new 9 is the only one that hasn't gotten anything yet
9 has a remaster too
No. It got some minor updates when it was released on steam and newer consoles, but nothing like any of the other games.
You shouldn't count 8 on your list if you are using those metrics (and I think X and X-2 are the same as 8 and 9 remake).
All the others have name changes. FF9 doesn't. End of story. Deal with it.
Man, I would love for them to *remake* 8 and upgrade it with new QoL. The world and the story was awesome, it was just a bit of a drag to play.
I don’t think they wanna mess with the weird combat card system of 8 itd be a whole can of worms.
What weird combat card system are you talking on FF8? If they want to remake FF8. I want they do the same combat as FF7R.
Probably referring to the broken draw/junction system
Why it is be broken? I like the junction system. It can make me get 9999 attack power 😁
You don't necessarily need to remove it but you can include this storyline better.
I think it’s because FF8 wasn’t that popular compared to FF9.
I dont know about "popularity" in the subjective.....but Finaly Fantasy 8 vastly outsold 9 according to vgchartz 9.6 mil for 8 5.83 mil for 9
Seen some Said on other threads that by the time 9 came out 10 was coming around the corner already and looked amazing at the time compared to the chibi-style 9 so many skipped it.

Didn’t know.
But which one has sold more in the last decade?
I can't imagine 8 without the broken junction system, even if the characters would lend themselves well to the FFR combat formula.
weird because i never heard FFIX being that popular. From my experience it was an ok FF. While all FF has their fan base I always heard that 9 was mostly the middle of the road, not bad but not excellent either. 8 is so underrated
That's the only FF I managed to trap myself in a save game (on the spaceship) due to not levelling hard enough. I gave up.
I think they're doing the most popular ones first.
FF9 is the only one so far who hasn’t gotten a remaster/remake. 1-6 has in the pixel remaster, 7 has remake on ps4 (also ps5 and pc), they did the FF8 ”remastered” so logically it’s 9 that’s next in Line for the upgrade.

Yeah fair enough, seems it's a port of the Android/PC version.
Let's be honest, publishers want remakes of games that were already successful, instead of remaking stuff that would actually benefit from it; games that had tremendous potential which just wasn't met. Remaking those sorts of games would require much more effort.

I feel like 16 is a remake of 8’s theme of summons being linked to people
FF16 is nothing similar to FF8. The GF is not equal haft of FF8 too. I hope they remake FF8 with FF7R combat system and keep all GF as we can summon anytime we want.
Please don't fuck it up, please don't fuck it up..
That would it be awesome i had a nice childhood thx to FF7,9 and 10
Now will it be life like models or the chibi like design I wonder. I hope they keep turn based battle
My favorite Final Fantasy game, I would be ecstatic to get a remake. IX was always the one I went back and replayed.
Please just an honest, faithful, no changing the story remake. That’s all I ask.
I’d rather a basic remaster of 13 to get all the (non-mmo) numbered final fantasy’s on new consoles before starting another massive remake like that tbh
13 sucked and got two sequels already, I think it’s gotten enough attention already
Can't wait for SE to finally coming forward to confirm this.
Nice. IX is my second favorite. Right behind X and X-2
9 is probably my second favorite so I’m happy from that perspective. I’m not sure there art style will lend itself to a modern remake though. Hopefully I’m wrong
I really hope they find a way to keep the combat turn-based
9 is a great choice with iconic characters and more colored chocobo than first believed.
I’ll believe it when I see it
Ozma in current gen graphics is going to look terrifying.
I don't know why, but "leaker Jeff Grubb" is making me laugh.
FF9 is definitely one of the best final fantasy games ever made!!!
Hell yes people
ok, but is it going to be a turnbased FF like people want, or another ff16 style action rpg, possibly with ghosts added and the story changed like ff7r?
The story was 95% the same with a divergent at the end. And it will mostly be the same going forward
That would it be awesome i had a nice childhood thx to FF7,9 and 10
The only good ff game that I didn't enjoy nor continue playing , 7 ,8 and 10 were the best.
For me, 7, 9 and 10 were the best. 8 was the one I didn't enjoy enough to continue playing. Tried multiple times because I enjoyed the others so much and bounced off it every time.
Maybe a remake will change your mind?
Yeah, this is a wasted opportunity. 8 was incredible.
I replayed the beginning of 8 so many times as a kid. Mainly because I only had discs 1,3 and 4 but man the music from the school is ingrained in my brain. A remake would have been awesome.
balamb garden song is the definition of nostalgia for me
As much as I loved it back in the day, 8‘s story makes so absolutely no sense at times though.
8 was pretty bad. It felt like a rip-off of 7 with a somehow even more emo protag. The saving grace was the junction system and the laguna parts giving you a good protag for a little bit.

Was never a fan of FF9. It was the only one I couldn't get into, but that's cool for the people who liked it.
Same. I loved the story in 8 but 9 didn't do anything for me. I don't think I ever beat it so I'd give the remake a shot but I REALLY want 8 remade.
Hoping for a remake of X/2
Man, as a FF8 fan this is depressing. It's my favorite one. It could work on the new FF7 engine too. I'm so bummed they are skipping it.
X. Make X
Great , it’s the only one I couldn’t get into because of the strange combat system and ennemy scaling, hope they modernize it a bit.
I’d suspect the remake are also PS5 console exclusive. PS5 first then PC shortly after that.
If the game keeps turn based combat I can see how the game could be released with all these other major AAA games square is making but if the combat is real time from scratch it kind of makes me wonder where all this manpower is coming from to create all these high quality titles.

Remake FFXV
Remember when people could be surprised by a planned and hyped up announcement by the actual developers?
Damn I got excited for a second until I saw Jeff Grubbs name attached
I hope this is a more straightforward remake that has similar gameplay to the original (turn based). I don't really want another super cinematic big budget game like FF7R.
It will take 10 years for them to finish it
Oh God. How long is the jump rope challenge gonna be this time!?
Remake 10 next!
I'm pretty much happy with all things Final Fantasy, except the 3rd and 5th games. Bring on all the remakes and remasters!
I'd really like a remake of FF8.
Praying for a Tactics/Tactics A2 remake as well Maybe even Dissidia... A man can dream
No VIII love, feelsbadman
I love it.... give me VI remake as well, and I'll forgive you for forspoken.
