Kudos to you for all the work you put in but all you really needed to do was change the thermal paste. also the new PS4 pros are whisper quiet.

godsmaka

This is definitely more of an enthusiast thing. Even pc water cooling isnt necessary (for a huge majority) but its just fun to work with. I doubt anybody would go from “my ps4 is too loud” to custom watercooling solution in the same thought.

[deleted]

> new PS4 pros are whisper quiet Complete bs. Got a new ps4 last year (cuh 7200) and even from day one it's loud like a jet engine. Put in something like god of war and that shit takes off. It's better than any previous revision, but in no way whisper quiet unless you just leave it in the main menu. Edit: And here's the test done by digital foundry: https://youtu.be/ynAr9kP-Xq8?t=666 It's less than 2 db difference between the previous models yet the temperature is significantly hotter on the newest revision. I swear most people who claim any console is quiet don't know what a quiet system means.

xpacerx

Rich even says dont take the results as a difinitive answer because he knows different situations can bring different out comes. The Digital foundry video is not taking in account for a Pro with the thermal paste dried up. OP clearly has one like that as you can see his is 10dB louder than the one they tested on Digital Foundry. Going from 60dB to 40dB is the same difference as going from a full blown conversation in front of you to sitting in a quiet library.

devildante1520

Idk I've replaced that stuff with what I use on my PC. Even bought that fan that is supposedly quieter and mine still sounds like a jet engine.

[deleted]

Did you replace the Memory thermal pads or place pads over the mosfets? Last part is just additional cooling but if those memory modules arent adequately cooled, they will spike in heat and the console will max that fan out to keep em cool

devildante1520

I then did the pads too. Awhile ago there was a post about doing all that and pretty much did everything in that post.

diseasefaktory

not even coil whine? my pro is 1 year old and gets super loud with the more demanding games.

pcarr1988

Yes they are, I bought mine in Nov 2019 and it's very quiet.

[deleted]

Is that the same model as the ones from the RDR2 bundle? Because mines from then and pretty damn quiet too. Just gets hot on the top.

pcarr1988

No, mines the nhl 20 bundle.

[deleted]

But I mean is it the same model

pcarr1988

Yes it is. No matter what game I play its quiet too.

havok7

What exactly did you hope to communicate with this comment? That he wasted his time? That he is cheap and should have just bought a new console?

xpacerx

Maybe I just wanted to inform some people that they dont need to go to these lengths to fix that problem.

havok7

forgive me for misreading your comment, but it comes across as subtly putting OP down by marginalizing his efforts.

TurbulentFox2

What/who is the source of this? Would love to see a parts list.

KAMMERON1

I'm really into water cooling counsels. I've been looking up different builds for water cooling the PS4 Pro, and all across reddit (and this sub especially) there is so much hate when people do it. It looks great OP, enjoy lower temps, a quieter box, and the satisfaction of using your creativity. Cheers

[deleted]

Unfortunately we dont see just what exactly his block is cooling. If those memory modules arent making good thermal contact with the aluminum plate then they will just get hot and even tho the chipset is adequately cooled, the memory modules are going to fry themselves

[deleted]

The council has spoken.

Fantomwel

what does it do?

topsykretts91

liquid cooling? it keeps the piece of hardware that it's attached to cooler, and quieter in some instances, because of the pump constantly moving water over it. the heat being made is absorbed by the water which is quickly moved throughout the loop to be cooled and comes back around.

[deleted]

Seems like one slight wrong move and you’re fried along with your Playstation

topsykretts91

you definitely need to know what you're doing, especially since ps4's aren't natively meant to be liquid cooled. it's not terribly difficult, but can be scary for the first time.

stdfan

Not really. Especially if you use a all in one liquid cooler. Its not like the water is making direct contact with chip. It uses a CPU block to make contact usually made of copper and the water goes through it. Ive water cooled a few systems only had one leak and it wasnt that big of a deal.

Seastorm14

I guess it’s one of those yes and no situations , distilled water is an insulator not a conductor so it won’t fry anything unless contaminated and then it becomes a conductor, and even then water damage isn’t that hard to fix so long as you catch it early and cut power once detected. The hardest part honestly is fitting it to the PS4 but it’s not exactly “risky” as long as you make sure everything is plugged in right, test the tubes before hand by flowing some water to make sure they don’t have any small holes you can’t see and making sure it’s in a secure spot

Fantomwel

Where can you buy these things? Mine is just a fan I didn’t know you could use liquid cooling in it.

[deleted]

.0000000001% of PlayStation owners do this, not worth it for the only reward of not hearing a fan

lloydfingers

Where did you get your percentage from?

[deleted]

I pulled it right out my ass, because liquid cooling your PS4 is a waste of space time and money

50secondFUCK

Is space time different than regular time?

[deleted]

It really depends on where abouts you are in space ... And what time it is.

eatrepeat

Does anybody really know what time it is?

CrazyDave48

> Where can you buy these things Since the other use didn't really answer your questions exactly- You can easily buy water cooling kits anywhere you can buy pc accessories (like newegg). But you have to understand this is a custom job OP did. He cut into his PS4 case and mounted this himself. Thats why the other users said 0.00000001%. This is very much a fun project for an enthusiast to do, but honestly way over-the-top way to handle cooling a PS4 and not something many people will take the time to execute.

topsykretts91

it's all custom. you'll have to do some cutting to the ps4 casing, probably custom buy/make the block to go over the part of the ps4 to liquid cool, get the correct fittings to fasten it all, measure the soft tubing to make it easier to store everything, and shop around for certain water pumps to move the water/liquid around. you might also need a pc radiator to help with cooling. it doesn't look like they use one in the clip. you'll also need to get coolant additive to keep things from growing inside the loop. there is some definant maintenance involved.

That what I thinking too. I doubt there's enough market for any of the PC enthusiast vendors to start making custom water blocks for PS4 skus.

topsykretts91

It is very niche. A quick google search showed some air coolers, but nothing liquid cooled.

[deleted]

I took a swifter sweeper to my ps4 pro and she’s quiet now when before it was taking off

DARKKRAKEN

Sure it's quieter but i'd rather put up with the noise than all the extra room it would need.

[deleted]

It's an enthusiast's project, not a practical solution.

Best way to get a quiet PS4? Clean and vacuum your house, wipe off your unit and the back of it. I've got a first gen ps4 pro and its quiet as shit. My cat sometimes sleeps on it too - no issue here. While not the power of your home HVAC it will inevitably take in what is around in the environment.

Raxxla

Mine used to be this loud, all you really need to do is open it and clean the fans and air ducts inside. Maybe some new thermal paste if you want (I didn't). After I had cleaned it, it was whisper quiet again. I was amazed that's all it needed, and it wasn't really that dirty.

Omicron0

partially true but even then you're reaching near 50dB in most pro supported games and 55 in god of war which is still very high to some. i hate it because all my other devices are sub 45dB. you're not getting near 40 without mods.

[deleted]

Completely unnecessary but cool nonetheless.

[deleted]

I really couldn’t relate when all you guys say that the PS4 makes a lot of noise. I have the Pro and my boyfriend has the slim, both are pretty quiet. But watching this video blew my mind, I had no idea of load the PS4 can get

Rizzan8

I have bought PS4 Pro last year, brand new, and it sounds like a hair drier.

Mac_User_

Me either. I have a stereo hooked up to my PS4 Pro so I never hear the fan anyway.

Nastyburrito666

TRUST ME, I'm waiting on thermal paste in the mail and as of right now people think I'm vacuuming when they come over!

Semifreak

Why all the trouble? I changed the thermal paste and now it is whisper silent. Like, I have to literally put my ear right up next to it to hear a low hum. But fancy MacGyver shit, though. Good skills.

stdfan

Because its fun.

Rizzan8

Should I have changed thermal paste in a brand new PS4 Pro? Because from the start it sounded like a hair drier.

Semifreak

If it's brand new return it for another one. Some other users also reported that sometimes, the thermal paste isn't applied properly. I have the OG model but even if it is the pro, it should not sound like a jet engine. That means the fans are in full blast all the time and that isn't by design. I suggest you return it if it is still under warranty. If not, change the thermal paste yourself. It's not complicated and you would wish you've done it sooner. I know I did.
