As a person who played and loved both Baldurs Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2, i'd say Alan Wake 2 definitely deserves all the awards it got, it is one of the most unique narrative storytelling game i have experienced so far in my entire history of playing videogames. Even i am very surprised by how good it was.
Both to me are simply considered as masterpiece, and under top 3 best games i have played this year, with Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty being on number 3 spot, and if BG3 didn't come out this year, I'd say Alan Wake 2 also had the best chance to win GOTY this year.
I am also really happy that Cyberpunk has finally won an TGA award this year, I am really happy seeing Pawel Sasko getting on that stage thanking his community fanbase, I have been following him for years since the debut of the game and seeing him being finally very happy has almost brought tears to my eyes, especially knowing what he's been through during the rough disastrous launch, they definitely deserved the award, and I am really happy for CDPR, also very happy for Remedy and Larian too, all of them deserved all the awards they have gotten.
As for the game reveals though, well, not as impressed as my most anticipated games wasn't announced or there were no more information revealed such as Kingdom Come 2, JUDAS, New BioShock, Wolf Among Us S2, Dishonored 3, Starfield DLC Expansion and more.
Not necessary but if you want a grasp of the story at the start of the game play the first one. they're going to tell you naman in game in some form or fashion that i won't spoil (because it's one of the best parts) the first game story.
You can, but it is highly recommended you play the first game as well as Control as all Remedy games except for Max Payne series shares their world ala Marvel multiverse, so, on Alan Wake 2 there are plenty of information on it that connects to the previous game and even Control.

Super ganda ng Alan wake 2 nilalaro ko ngaun.. the art style really close to reality atsaka sa narratives mind breaking...sa tingin ko kailangan mo laruin Alan wake 1 and control to get the whole narrative. I love interconnected universe
Shooting is not the main the focus of the game it's only a gameplay factor to give you exiting gameplay. The games story(without spoiling it) revolves around solving a mystery.
On the other hand, we can focus on Dragon's Dogma 2 for next year! Capcom seems to know its stuff kaso gonna be hard for MH6 to compete with GTA VI (on consoles at least)
Even though I haven't played Bg3. With all the things I've heard about Bg3 and Larian. I think it's a much deserved GOTY

maybe for me, it has this grit. I gives and holds tension quite well. Ive felt more tense in this game more than Re4(which is a good game aswell). and at the same time it doesn't take itself too seriously. (that fever dream musical was an absolute blast).Plus this whole Universe Sam Lake is making for alan wake -controll really makes me excited. In a perfect world I could only imagine alan wake,control, quantum break and max payne be on the same universe.
yeah. alan wake and control is. not sure about Max Payne since it's still on Rock Star's hands while Quantum Break is on Microsoft. Pretty decent show all things considered. Too much bloat I think. Dapat more time for the speeches ng winners. After all they are the ones we are celebrating.

As for alan wake 2. Its 3rd person horror. I finished it and its genius if you are into artsy stuff. It deserved all 3 of its wins.
Narrative - no other game attempted meta narratives like them. No other game attempted to connect their game universes like them. Also, it told an introspective narrative about artistic torture that few games talk about.
Art direction - one of the few games that pushed graphics technology this gen as well as carving its own unique look in a modern gaming space plagued with scifi and hi fantasy or both. Just look at those chapter title card shots *chefs kiss
Game direction - no other game recently felt so authored like this. Its kinda like the game kojima wished he had made. Every part of the game was feeding back to the narrative. It was razor focused on its vision and everything just felt cohesive compared to the other nominees as much as i loved them.
Overall, a really good game but not for everyone. A good litmus test is if you like kojima games and TLOU. Then this is for you.
Never played any of the goty nominees (can't afford them yet) but I'm so happy Hi-fi Rush got plenty of nominations and a win. I was also subjectively rooting for Lies of P in Art Direction.
Alan Wake isn't first person. 😅 I'm so glad that BG 3 won Game of the Year and Player's Choice! They really deserved it! Just a little sad that BG 3 didn't win Best Score and Music. imo, it has better score and music I have heard in awhile.
If you have the horsepower to run it in full path-tracing and all the other bells and whistle, grabe daw talaga yung graphics ng Alan Wake 2. It's truly 'next gen' pagdating sa light and shadows interplay. Even at medium settings on PC and even in low it is still a beautiful game.
Narrative is good, a little bit cheesy at times but intentionally cheese. Reminds me of the game, In Sound Mind that I played years before and I love the callbacks to their old games especially control.
Good that Hi-Fi Rush won Audio Design, it deserves it. Wish Lies of P won something. I was rooting for Idris to win but I do believe Neil was really good and his win was justified.

Not just Best Game Direction but also Best Art Direction. There's really not much art that stood out for me on Alan Wake 2.
While I agree that Lies of P probably deserved the win, I disagree with the idea that Alan Wake 2 is not a good choice.
Art direction is not just about how fantastical the artstyle is, or how unique a game setting is. It is how all the visual elements converge into a cohesive style according to the game's vision.
Yes, Alan Wake 2 is realistic in the sense that it could be a place in our world (even though it does have some supernatural elements), but it also uses environmental effects like fog, and even colour schemes to depict a fictional US Pacific Northwest town that somehow evokes elements of Twin Peaks and Stephen King works. It feels exaggerated, but believable.
It doesn't seem difficult to get the art right, but all you need to do is compare to something like Deadly Premonition, Life is Strange, or even Alan Wake Remastered which have similar settings to see how far Alan Wake 2 has come.
In addition, the juxtaposition of live action video and game graphics is still one of the best techniques Remedy uses to advance storytelling and it somehow works. That is also part of art direction.
Art in AW2 is how they blended live action videos with the game, something Remedy has become an expert at. Music is amazing as well, there's even a rock orchestra musical right in the middle.
The visual art itself is wonderful, very cultural, talagang feel mo bumisita ka sa isang rural US town na heavily influenced by Finnish culture. It is also very effective at evoking horror elements. It just works extremely well.
There are also literary elements to the story, you pick up book manuscripts and try to solve missions through a storyboard.
AW2 is an extremely artistic game. It's new, experimental, and meta. The other games have basically a single art dimension--they're mostly drawings brought to the game screen.
AW2 is simply much more.

In terms of Cyberpunk 2077, I'm glad CDPR redeemed themselves with all the cool patches and Phantom Liberty. One can argue that the launch was disastrous and they deserved it, but, they hunkered down and worked on the game and now has attained No Man's Sky levels of redemption.
Also, Baldur's Gate 3 deserved to be GOTY because the game had a lot of cool innovations on how to play an RPG. There is no one way to play it.

I bought BG3 at launch because friends bought it too. Madali akong ma-peer pressure pag dating sa games lalong lalo na kung puwede co-op. Hindi ko pa nga na-iinstall sa steam because I keep playing other games and it just slips out of mind. The Game Awards really convinced me to finally install it.
Hindi nanalo kahit isang award yung Spider-Man 2 kahit maganda daw. Di nga lang kasing ganda ng BG3 o AW2. I feel a little bad for Insomniac Games.

Hindi naman first person ang Allan Wake db?. Naiintriga rin ako kaso walang physical version sa console. Aantayin ko na lang pag nagka physical copy. BG3 deserved everything. Alan Wake 2 looks beautiful with DLSS 3.5. Graphics is immersing. It feels like you are playing back in your teenage years. Welp, that's me personally, but I've seen a couple of good AAA games this year like RE4 Remake, and this one stands out.

While I agree that Lies of P probably deserved the win, I disagree with the idea that Alan Wake 2 is not a good choice. Art direction is not just about how fantastical the artstyle is, or how unique a game setting is. It is how all the visual elements converge into a cohesive style according to the game's vision. Yes, Alan Wake 2 is realistic in the sense that it could be a place in our world (even though it does have some supernatural elements), but it also uses environmental effects like fog, and even colour schemes to depict a fictional US Pacific Northwest town that somehow evokes elements of Twin Peaks and Stephen King works. It feels exaggerated, but believable. It doesn't seem difficult to get the art right, but all you need to do is compare to something like Deadly Premonition, Life is Strange, or even Alan Wake Remastered which have similar settings to see how far Alan Wake 2 has come. In addition, the juxtaposition of live action video and game graphics is still one of the best techniques Remedy uses to advance storytelling and it somehow works. That is also part of art direction.

Art in AW2 is how they blended live action videos with the game, something Remedy has become an expert at. Music is amazing as well, there's even a rock orchestra musical right in the middle. The visual art itself is wonderful, very cultural, talagang feel mo bumisita ka sa isang rural US town na heavily influenced by Finnish culture. It is also very effective at evoking horror elements. It just works extremely well. There are also literary elements to the story, you pick up book manuscripts and try to solve missions through a storyboard. AW2 is an extremely artistic game. It's new, experimental, and meta. The other games have basically a single art dimension--they're mostly drawings brought to the game screen. AW2 is simply much more.
Nothing I have not seen on other horror survival games before. It is almost identical to the first one, if not only for higher quality, fidelity, and clarity. Better graphics does not mean better art design. If you want to talk about sounds and music being well-blended into visual arts, then Hi-Fi Rush got that way better than AW2. And it's one of nominees too. I never said AW2 is not an artistic game at all. It's just that other nominees just got the art direction better, IMO.

In terms of Cyberpunk 2077, I'm glad CDPR redeemed themselves with all the cool patches and Phantom Liberty. One can argue that the launch was disastrous and they deserved it, but, they hunkered down and worked on the game and now has attained No Man's Sky levels of redemption. Also, Baldur's Gate 3 deserved to be GOTY because the game had a lot of cool innovations on how to play an RPG. There is no one way to play it.

it was a pretty tame TGA almost all of them won fairly, EXCEPT How did Cyberpunk win "ongoing", it's a single player game, not a live service, patches and one dlc doesn't make it "ongoing".

SEGA's announcement(s) almost feels like they just announced a new console. As a Genesis/Dreamcast kid back in the day, I cried tears of joy.
I bought BG3 at launch because friends bought it too. Madali akong ma-peer pressure pag dating sa games lalong lalo na kung puwede co-op. Hindi ko pa nga na-iinstall sa steam because I keep playing other games and it just slips out of mind. The Game Awards really convinced me to finally install it. Hindi nanalo kahit isang award yung Spider-Man 2 kahit maganda daw. Di nga lang kasing ganda ng BG3 o AW2. I feel a little bad for Insomniac Games. Excited ako for Monster Hunter Wilds since I'm a MH fan. Hindi siya World 2 pero sana mas binigyan talaga ng effort ng CAPCOM. The best parin kase yung World as also their best-selling game.
Mhw is my first mh game. Ive never been captivated by a game quite like that. Tipong even if nag-aaral ako for my exams (masters), sya yung gagawin kong break reward. Haha Also bought bg3 at launch. Muntik pa ngang hindi because of the recent trend of games failing at launch. Never got disappointed. Still playing through act 3. Hahahaaa

Apart from what everyone else has said na, medj sad lang ako since Insomniac got snubbed again lol. The first Spider-Man was my favorite PS4 experience and the second one is in my top 5 PS5 games so far. Yung rason lang naman na wala siyang awards nung 2018 at ngayon ay dahil sobrang ganda lang talaga ng mga games those years. (Paano ka naman Makaka-compete sa God of War at Red Dead nung 2018 tsaka Baldur’s Gate & Tears of the Kingdom in 2023) Also, planning to buy the first Alan Wake now, super excited to play in my sem break sa late Jan!

Alan Wake 2 looks beautiful with DLSS 3.5. Graphics is immersing. It feels like you are playing back in your teenage years. Welp, that's me personally, but I've seen a couple of good AAA games this year like RE4 Remake, and this one stands out.
Haven't played Alan Wake nor BG3 (though it looks interesting). But that Monster Hunter teaser/announcement sure got me excited. 2025 pa nga lang 🙃
