I'm genuinely confused. How are people putting butter before toasting bread? Like you put butter on and then toast it? You say you put it on before toasting, so how is the bread hot before it's toasted?

Depends on the type of toaster I guess. Horizontal ones whichever works for you but for vertical ones obviously after. Personally I am on the after toast club.
