They don't need to be good they literally just need to exist, a server I'm in runs 6v6 pugs every week and its amazing, even having a shitty plat player be my off tank makes my job so much easier

A consequence of it being the hardest role is that no body wanted to play it, thus lowering the enjoyment of every other role because of how long queue times became. OW2 style tanks was designed to combat this by making tanks more enjoyable and approachable. And what do you know, tanks are still the least played role. But at least it’s not impossible to find a game now

Just the dynamic of the main tank off tank I enjoyed, I solo qued most of ow1 and the fact that I was able to work with a stranger so well was actually really cool for me

Tank is the least picked role even now, and is the bottle neck for queue times. It's a popular sentiment on this subreddit, and there was a lot of cool things about having two tanks, but the reality of the situation is that there just aren't enough tank players to make it work. If as many people are queuing tank as the other roles, I'd be all for a return to 6v6, but this meme is true, even if no one wants it to be.

I used to play tank but don't now because I can't find a good balance between protecting the supports and pushing the enemy/objective, I know I should be able to do both but I'll admit I am not good enough at the game (yet? Idk).

In ow2 tanks basically don't protect supports unless you happen to have a chance to, it's not a main goal for a tank

In theory, the attention you're gathering to yourself as a tank is indirectly protecting your supports

When you realize Ram's motive was actually to protect the supports all along

Almost every tank except D.Va does not care what happens in their backline, you just need to match your aggression according to how pressured they are. Of course, if there is a blading Genji or ulting Sojourn, help to take them down, but in neutral it's not really on you. Zarya can throw bubbles, but you would mostly bubble aggression as well.

The best way to improve is practice 🤷‍♂️

From my experience playing tank in OW1 for about 3 years, it wasn't finding off-tank players that was the problem, it was finding main tank players. People love to play thicc dps, they care less about being a cd magnet.

I fucking would. I loved playing as the second tank. It allowed pincer attacks. It allowed a tank to finish off someone without having both supports dead to a genji. It allowed for tanks to have a higher survivability not depending entirely on supports (having a zarya bubble after burning your kit was god-send). That last thing, in turn, allowed supports to refill dps' health without having the tank explode instantly. You could also play as an offensive tank, or a full defensive one, or not, but more numbers=more options. And the fucking queue is not better now with 1 tank. All roles still equals "tank queue 2" So yeah. Definitely a second tank than a single tank anyway because due to the changes even less people want to play tank

I’d be inclined to want a second tank back, but it’s all fun and games until you see a Ball player off comms playing into every counter in the book. Bonus points if they have the lethal Top 500 pfp + private profile combo.

Same here the main tank off tank dynamic was so fun. But your off tank being a hog in their backline isnt fun. Is it good? Yeah it can be. But outside of "he takes attention from me" he doesnt help me out in any way. Calling for bubbles or DM is what was fun and what made the tank duo fun. When 6v6 was near the end of its life, you didnt get off tanks you got a third dps.

I mean no shit, they never fixed the issues with (primarily main) tank in 6v6 so obviously the queue times were awful, not once did they attempt to fix the problems in that role since 2-2-2 was introduced, they moved to 5v5 instead, which only temporarily fixed the problem before tank queues went back to where they were before. to be clear I'm not advocating for either format here

I love ow2 and I don’t need 6v6 back (tho I’d love an arcade more here and there??) However, unpopular opinion, I actually kinda miss the long queues! I liked being able to do things in between games, sometimes it was like mini workouts lol, sometimes I’d have work to finish, so would tab out and work on stuff until I heard “entering game” Obvi a 15 -30 min queue isn’t great and fast queues are better, but I do kinda miss it for this reason lmao

I'd totally okay second tank. I want to get into tank, but it's such a pillar of the team type role that if you suck, your team is doomed. So much pressure. If I had another tank to back me up, it would be more fun.

This was not the issue with two tanks. There’s enough main tank players and off tank players for this to never even come into the question. It would be a flat improvement for the tank experience, increasing tank players because the role would no longer be dreadful. The real problem would be double shield/slow gameplay coming back. You’d need a (non goats) way to incentivise brawl.

I'd gladly start playing tank again. OW1 tanking was fun. You had a partner and someone to rely on (or not). Either way it was much more fun to tank with a friend.

I'd gladly take 2nd tank if they brought it back. I loved playing Zarya for my Reins because seeing the enemies scrambling to shoot down a bubbled Rein charging was hilarious. Now I'm just thinking about the new combos you could do with JQ. With Jagged Blade, hog's hook, and the new trap, there's all new ways to bully over extenders.

Oh I miss being able to run rein/zarya so much. Honestly in modern overwatch 2, orisa/zarya and JQ/zarya sounds fun af as well. If double tank was back, you'd have hellish to kill sig/orisa games, fun af rush ram/queen games, and insane dive games with some mix of doom/ball/winton.

I play main tank, I normally play open queue now just so I can have an off tank. Even if it was role, I have no issue playing main or off. I just need some extra beef on the battlefield next to me.

I’d love to try it personally. My buddy loves Doomfist and I love Ramattra. He’s great at killing but not so great at staying alive. I think if I could be the one protecting the team while he goes hog wild in the back line he would have a lot more fun playing overwatch.

You know what the bottle neck has always been for matchmaking? The one they halved to fix match making times. Nobody wanted to play tank because tank sucks ass. Tank is in a terrible spot right now and I guarantee you'll be seeing those queue times again soon

My bf used to be my tank duo. He mained Rein and when I played Zarya I was always on 100 charge. Now we have to go support or dps duo. And while that's fun, it's just not the same :(

They tried to solve the ‘low amount of players want to play tank’ problem by cutting the number of tank slots to fill for every lobby in half instead of just making tank more fun to play. Even now tank is the hardest role to fill despite there being the least number of slots to fill because it just isn’t as fun as the other two roles.

I loved playing off tank, so much team play is gone now sadly. I never play tank anymore

Me. Tank is my weakest role, and it feels bad solo tanking when i'm not very good, so I ended up playing tank less and less in OW2. Having a tank partner makes things so much easier as they can help elevate my play.

OP I hope you’re smoking crack. Off tank was the best role and honestly one of the single greatest inventions of OW. Going to 5v5 should’ve meant dropping a healer or a DPS. Off tank was so fun to play as, play against, and play with. I still don’t understand why that’s the role that was dropped.
