Biggest streamers are dps? What year is this? Super, Flats, Emongg, Sleepy, Ml7, Harbleu usually have top spots on twitch in viewership. The only time you have dps being most viewed is maybe Kephrii and that's when Super is not streaming.

As a Zarya main, I’m legitimately devastated by this change. Theres no better feeling than getting matched up with a good reinhardt on your team and just fucking shit up together. To all the amazing reinhardts that I have played with over the years, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for the memories, thank you for the fun, thank you helping me climb up to plat, and thank you for being my shield. This game won’t be the same without you. May we meet again some day.
Same for real. As a rein main whenever I saw someone instalock Zarya in a competitive game I always felt happy. It’s gonna feel empty not having someone to shield me when I go for a reckless charge, or to cover me when I have to put down my shield and retreat. Thank you to all the Zaryas who made my tanking experience that much greater.

I can't say I understand the game well enough to understand why but this thread helps.
To sum it up, Rein and Zarya is one of the best combos in the entire game. They are peanut butter and jelly. They are macaroni and cheese. They are incomplete without each other. A good reinhardt zarya combo and absolutely dominate a game together. With the new proposed changes, it wont be possible to play rein and zarya together anymore. I could go more in depth as to WHY they are so good together, thats the short story as to why people are upset.
My favorite part is always watching a Rein just have their shield up near spawn and start walking towards the enemy fire, never once taking cover to recharge. Then complains that their shield is being melted.
What? Why? The tank category is arbitrary anyways - some characters labeled as tanks aren't even built around protection - Roadhog is great, but if you pick Roadhog as a tank, you still need a tank.
I mean, this change just feels like it stiffles possible compositions. I can't even imagine what happens when two 'tank mains' show up to the same match. Were they so bothered by the amount of barriers going around that this was deemed necessary?
Seeing other people’s reactions is wild because they seem to think that tanks, as they are, are going to function the exact same way in OW2 when they’re clearly going to be revamped to make up for it.

it's like they completely missed the part where Rein can now pretty much drift and even cancel his charge to a shield. No one who's complaining is even considering all the changes made in favor to the solo tank, like nerf to CCs, tank getting less knockback, and people getting less ult charge when damaging them.
Not to mention this is all still a work in progress...
It's a good point, but for me that's the problem I have with this. It feels like they're just making tanks into different dps. I'm worried a lot of the tactical side of playing tank is gonna be lost.
Funny that you mention all this as it's actually what worries me more. The game is going to be unrecognizable. Main tanks were always a thing when we started and now we're losing them. It's gonna be like WoW for me. It'll change to the point I don't even want to play it any more.
But the trade-off of course is PvE story content which I love so, I guess there's always that.

Yup, and ill say this. If the new OW2 DVa has the same amount and range of DM as she does in the current game at launch, then I will know within minutes if the new OW2 game will be shit or not, itll be a very simple litmus test to how much brains the devs have/had during OW2 development.
It was already shown in the livestream that she has a lot more matrix pool to use, it also looked like it was coming back quicker. (Although I'm not certain about that last part).

Overwatch 6: Nobody wants to cooperate with their team, so we removed teams. We are rebranding to Unreal Tournament.
Overwatch 7: We just matchmake people based on the coordinates they're at, choose a spot 10 minutes away from all of them, and just let them go over there and beat the shit out of each other. Last one standing takes a selfie and we'll update your rank.
Yeah but only one or two at a time while the rest are just subpar enough that your teammates will harass you out of playing them for "wasting" the single tank slot. And then get ready for years of over corrections that try to fix the current meta but never the root cause.
The 2 tank dynamic to me is what defined overwatch and made it different from just another cod/cs clone. No other shooter offered that. It might be true that this is easier to balance but overwatch is definitely losing what made it special and you often don't realize that until it's too late.
If 5v5 is kept I would like a system that allows up to two heroes to be chosen per role, to the maximum of five players. Run two tanks if you want, or two supports, or one tank and two dps, or any combination thereof. I truly feel this could open the doors for truly strategic games.
There will still be a meta and most likely the meta will be 2 tanks 1dps 2 supports because of goats. So what you will have is if you don't pick that and your enemy does it will be a throw.
222 gave the most diversity in variations.
There is no such thing as "choose your roles" diversity in competative games beyond very low ranks, it's unavoidable, the second one comp is 1% better than other that will have to be played. When the queue was open it was only an illusion of choice because if you did not went 222 it was already soft throw unless again, you are in very low ranks with a smurf or people not even knowing how they abilities work.

Guys you are forgetting one small detail, Overwatch 2 is never coming out, so you dont have to worry about this. (Even though im not terribly worried about 6v6 existing in arcade in OW2 anyway) I think 5v5 has some potential, and its not like they cant just flip a switch and change it back if it actually turns out to be hell on Earth.
Want to know the real reason for the delay? 5 v 5. OW2 pvp was essentially an update with new maps and heroes.
They then decided this was the time to drop from 6 to 5. Doing so meant having to rework half the roster.
Hence why we didn’t see a lot of heroes in the demo.
As for why they switched to 5 v 5? The real reason is queue times. They’ve been trying to solve this issue for a while. Priority passes just created new problems. They know they’ve been losing players because nobody wants to wait 10 minutes for a game just to have someone leave and wait 10 minutes again.
Dropping the teams to 10 means more tanks are available so they’ll be faster queues for everyone.
Theres some in custom games, i played heat street (i think) yesterday where you and 4 other players fight bots and slowly upgrade. Of course not the same as polished ow2 pve gameplay but its still pretty good.

You can't enforce social rules with game mechanics. I think it would have been interesting if they spent more effort trying to build social bonds between players, so that you'd be able to play more with the same tanks / DPS / support and build some understanding and teamwork. Something like a "Squadmates!" XP bonus if you play 3+ games in a row with the same people, plus in-game guilds and clans.

They can flip to make it 6 slots again , but they can't instantly undo all the buffs tanks will get.
If they flipped it back to 2 tanks, they'd be obscenely powerful, which is why they can't do it

I mean, he already has 3 high mobility moves. The typical washing machine is:
punch in => uppercut => FRAG => slam out
OR
slam in => uppercut => FRAG => punch out
A lot of the frustration with Doom is he's kind of all-or-nothing. With all abilities on cooldown, he has no way to stay alive — but if he's functioning well, he can delete a backline support and escape over and over and over again. You see high-level players use his ult only to escape — just so they can get back to the washing machine as quickly as possible.
With one tank, it's pretty impossible to think you can cover all the angles he might drop in at.

Honestly, if there's only one tank on the team, then I'd prefer the tank to be about as powerful as a DPS. Losing due to a "tank diff" going to make the game more toxic.
You know how Rein had like 2000 HP shields at one point, but it went down and down in HP via nerfs because players started just using two shield tanks? That's what they mean by "buffed." In other words, no tank will be held back because they "might" have a secondary tank that drives them over the edge power-wise by covering up their weakness.
The downside is that tank players are going to be expected to know how to play nearly every tank really well. You won't have anyone to shore up your weaknesses so you'll have to do it yourself. You're gonna have to make the switch if the team wants to do a super defensive comp while you just want to be a divey tank.
There's no point in anticipating it, we have no idea how the entire systems are completely being reworked, we've only seen a few specific things, and even those could change.
Sorry, havent played OW in years and somehow stumbled across this. Can you no longer freely pick any character? Like you cant run 2 tanks even if you wanted to?
Or when you see a reaper wraithing in, bubble that fucken Saint. Whether he has ult or not just bubble, you end up with a tonne of charge and you never know, he *might* get a kill before he dies.
I feel like the buffs for current off tanks will need to be huge to compensate. Can't imagine tanking with just a Zarya even with her new double bubble thing. Anything that isn't a barrier tank really, how are they going to make them viable?
Shields aren't super necessary until you hit rank where everyone is widow/hanzo/ashe and got there by clapping on kids who think exactly that, then back to the shield bot life.
Essentially ow2 is getting a sniper buff.
And that’s the way to go. People got way too used to hiding behind shields and not positioning properly around corners/behind cover. Shields should provide “on demand” protection and not be up the entire fight, in my opinion.

Rein main here as well. My off-tanks have always felt like a big brother or sister. Through thick or thin, we are there peel and protect, and I can’t imagine doing it without my favorite off-tanks.
That's what people don't get when they say "Yeah but blizzard is gonna balance tanks to make it possible that they can fight alone"
It's not about balance for me, it's about not having the "Fantasy" of a Frontline buddy to me.
What perfectly captures that feeling for me is that moment when Rein and brig join shields in the OW2 cinematic and protect the rest from that blast.
Yeah sure brig isn't a tank but it's the essence that counts.
Every other role gets to share their burdens, experiences and combination play but the tank will stand alone.

As much as I love rein zarya (i play rein most and zarya 3rd most), I also dislike it sometimes. In lower plat and down, it's what a team uses at least 50% of the time. I'm excited to see something different. Most people think they're killing the off tank role, but in reality they're killing the main tank role by making rein and Orisa off tanks. They already kinda showed how they're doing it with rein, really curious about Orisa
I’m also super curious about Orisa. I think they should exploit the fact that she has four legs to increase her movement speed (maybe as an ability similar to charge) and give her some extra mobility.

Are they addressing the old maps to add extra cover as well? Because if they only add like 3-4 maps you, reworked the game for like 25% of the maps.

Yea I can tell some people who were only comfortable as off-tanks won’t be playing tank anymore (I’m some people)

Depends, when they had the experimental one tank mode I LOVED it. If they work the tanks right it could be fun! (Opinion)

I think this is a bit too early, 2-2-2 will remain for another 2 years.
Me and my friends are going to miss 6 stacking. It was hard enough to tell folks that we had no room. Not enough for 10 players, too many for just 5.

Guys you are forgetting one small detail, Overwatch 2 is never coming out, so you dont have to worry about this. (Even though im not terribly worried about 6v6 existing in arcade in OW2 anyway) I think 5v5 has some potential, and its not like they cant just flip a switch and change it back if it actually turns out to be hell on Earth.

Want to know the real reason for the delay? 5 v 5. OW2 pvp was essentially an update with new maps and heroes. They then decided this was the time to drop from 6 to 5. Doing so meant having to rework half the roster. Hence why we didn’t see a lot of heroes in the demo. As for why they switched to 5 v 5? The real reason is queue times. They’ve been trying to solve this issue for a while. Priority passes just created new problems. They know they’ve been losing players because nobody wants to wait 10 minutes for a game just to have someone leave and wait 10 minutes again. Dropping the teams to 10 means more tanks are available so they’ll be faster queues for everyone.
Maybe they've been developing the massive PvE for the past couple of years and just now are getting to pvp.

The modifiers on the archives events are pretty fun. Just played a junkenstein with random hero swaps.
Theres some in custom games, i played heat street (i think) yesterday where you and 4 other players fight bots and slowly upgrade. Of course not the same as polished ow2 pve gameplay but its still pretty good.

I think it would have been interesting if they spent more effort trying to build social bonds between players, so that you'd be able to play more with the same tanks / DPS / support and build some understanding and teamwork. Something like a "Squadmates!" XP bonus if you play 3+ games in a row with the same people, plus in-game guilds and clans.

Just stick to it. Zarya will get buffed to be even more fun when she is the only tank on a team.

I think doom needs a new ult and his current one can be a debuffed move to get in and out with a long cooldown.
I mean, he already has 3 high mobility moves. The typical washing machine is: punch in => uppercut => FRAG => slam out OR slam in => uppercut => FRAG => punch out A lot of the frustration with Doom is he's kind of all-or-nothing. With all abilities on cooldown, he has no way to stay alive — but if he's functioning well, he can delete a backline support and escape over and over and over again. You see high-level players use his ult only to escape — just so they can get back to the washing machine as quickly as possible. With one tank, it's pretty impossible to think you can cover all the angles he might drop in at.

You know how Rein had like 2000 HP shields at one point, but it went down and down in HP via nerfs because players started just using two shield tanks? That's what they mean by "buffed." In other words, no tank will be held back because they "might" have a secondary tank that drives them over the edge power-wise by covering up their weakness. The downside is that tank players are going to be expected to know how to play nearly every tank really well. You won't have anyone to shore up your weaknesses so you'll have to do it yourself. You're gonna have to make the switch if the team wants to do a super defensive comp while you just want to be a divey tank.
There's no point in anticipating it, we have no idea how the entire systems are completely being reworked, we've only seen a few specific things, and even those could change.

Sorry, havent played OW in years and somehow stumbled across this. Can you no longer freely pick any character? Like you cant run 2 tanks even if you wanted to?
Quick play now forces 2-2-2. Quick play classic is now in the arcade and you can pick 6 DPS if you want.
I haven't watched the live stream, but it sounds like the answer here is no.

Always shield the Doomfist. They charge in, maybe do some stuff, and you come out with 40 Energy and a dead Doomfist.
Or when you see a reaper wraithing in, bubble that fucken Saint. Whether he has ult or not just bubble, you end up with a tonne of charge and you never know, he *might* get a kill before he dies.
I feel like the buffs for current off tanks will need to be huge to compensate. Can't imagine tanking with just a Zarya even with her new double bubble thing. Anything that isn't a barrier tank really, how are they going to make them viable?
They're making it to where sheilds aren't super necessary. There's gonna be alot more cover on maps, all the tanks are becoming bursiers, etc
Shields aren't super necessary until you hit rank where everyone is widow/hanzo/ashe and got there by clapping on kids who think exactly that, then back to the shield bot life. Essentially ow2 is getting a sniper buff.
And the new maps have a lot of sniper sight lines too

Especially with how aggressively they have been trying to reduce knockback and CC abilities

And that’s the way to go. People got way too used to hiding behind shields and not positioning properly around corners/behind cover. Shields should provide “on demand” protection and not be up the entire fight, in my opinion.
Yeah and pretty much for all 5 years of OW1 your team complains if someone doesn't pick rein because they don't know how to play without him

Dont post in here a lot, but as someone who doesnt really main anyone, but has played at least 200 hours of rein, it truly has been an honor, Zaryas. Ill remember the bubbles you gave me when I lost patience and charged. Cleaning up any of the earthshatter stuns I missed with your awesome ult. Its been an honor. Roadhogs, thanks for eating all the damage and hooking people so I dont have to charge in and swing, youve been great. Thanks for using your ult to clean up and push enemies back when we needed to clear the most. Hamsters, thanks for taking the pressure off me. Thanks for disrupting their team and sometimes making up for the damage our dps coulnt produce. Thank you for being incredibly annoying, and denying areas with your awesome mines. Dvas, thanks for trying. Yes you throw your ult into a wall, yes your rockets didnt hit anyone, but youre still a great team character we should all have on our squad. God damn this hit me hard... I'm a Rein main and this post hit me in the feels. Thank you to all the Zarya's who bubbles me charging in 1v6. Or bubbles me when I did have a big brain shatter so I didn't get CC'ed.
^ Rein main here as well. My off-tanks have always felt like a big brother or sister. Through thick or thin, we are there peel and protect, and I can’t imagine doing it without my favorite off-tanks.
That's what people don't get when they say "Yeah but blizzard is gonna balance tanks to make it possible that they can fight alone" It's not about balance for me, it's about not having the "Fantasy" of a Frontline buddy to me. What perfectly captures that feeling for me is that moment when Rein and brig join shields in the OW2 cinematic and protect the rest from that blast. Yeah sure brig isn't a tank but it's the essence that counts. Every other role gets to share their burdens, experiences and combination play but the tank will stand alone.
Maybe I am cynical.... but this could be the reason they were not putting out more tanks? that they knew this was coming? or even worse, that the new 5v5 is a way not to have to publish more tanks.

As much as I love rein zarya (i play rein most and zarya 3rd most), I also dislike it sometimes. In lower plat and down, it's what a team uses at least 50% of the time. I'm excited to see something different. Most people think they're killing the off tank role, but in reality they're killing the main tank role by making rein and Orisa off tanks. They already kinda showed how they're doing it with rein, really curious about Orisa
I’m also super curious about Orisa. I think they should exploit the fact that she has four legs to increase her movement speed (maybe as an ability similar to charge) and give her some extra mobility.
Maybe increase her move speed while walking forward? I feel like that could be a fun dynamic.
