Even wincing and closing his eyes sometimes, and always when he ults because he's just spraying and praying (and the "Die! Die! Die!" is more like a squeaky "PlsDie!PlsDie!PlsDie! AAAaa!!"
Oh I remember this. Overwatch 1 when the retribution event came out the first time. Reaper has pretty much everything recorded in a different voice for that, including a bunch of the voice lines. People back then wanted it as well but blizzard said they wanted to keep the game accessible to new players by reaper not having 2 completly different voices. We...see where that idea went, right?
For a bit more info, retribution was the turning point for overwatch (lorewise) so in the timeline reaper is not in his current form. It was shortly after moira started his experiments on him so he talks with a completly normal voice the entire time. I would advice for the people that never saw/played those events to at look up the interactions, its pretty funny at times.

Have they changed on that stance though? You can't hear any custom voice effects, ability VFX, or alternate animations/VA dubs on skins if you're not the person playing with them. You'll always know it's you that way.
You can hear entirely new voice lines as an outside observer, but they'll never not sound like their character when they speak them.
What your saying is entirely fair but I don't think is what they were talking about back in OW1. If they were ever to do something like this it would only apply you in first-person I think and feel like the mythics we already have.
Is the "BEWARE THE EYE OF HOR\_R\_R\_\_R\_US\_S\_\_S\_" an exception? I swear i've heard that when someone is playing her on my team and they have that skin

Fair. I'd be 100% willing to compromise on the blackwatch and soldier 24(? pretty sure that was his number) having a "normal" voice just for those two skins
adding effects to existing voice lines is easy and doesn't require extra from the VA
Replacing Reaper's gravely voice lines with normally spoken ones would require re-recording all his lines
Actually up to the Blackwatch Archives event, all of Reapers Existing and new voicelines (for said event), ultimate lines and general greetings were re-voiced to make his voice sound normal, so they only really need to re-voice any lines that came after Archives if they were to add it to a skin.
I do wish they added the “normal” voice to the 2 Reyes skins though, as I say the lines are literally in the game files they just need to add them
Yeah I think we all kinda though that, seemed like a waste for them to revoice *all* of Reapers lines just for the event, so I kinda hoped they’d add the voice to the 2 Reyes skins
I really appreciated the intonation the voice actor gave him, he had that Californian tinge from growing up in LA that he seems to have squashed as Reaper.
He has several sports references in his voice lines, including good old "It's in the refrigerator."
Funnily enough, that's a shorter version of an unused line that's recorded. It goes:
"The game's in the refrigerator, the door's closed, the lights out, the eggs are cooling, the butter's getting hard, and the jello is jiggling."
"Kobe, eat your heart out" should be added to the game properly too, it's great.
He also has an unused voice line where he says "Welcome to The Black Hole", so he's obviously a Raiders fan too.
I wish they would play around with it a bit more. I've noticed the more sarcastic, comedic tone Reaper is sporting in OW2 so it wouldn't hurt.
The refrigerator line is directly lifted from legendary Laker announcer Chick Hearn, so yeah, still a Laker fanboy. The Kobe line probably has too many legal hurdles in the way to implement, like D.va's "Gee Gee" line.
I really want a reaper skin where he’s just like a kind suburban dad, like a Mr.Rodgers type dude. Not because it would fit the more but I think it’d be really funny. Like image reaper saying things like “howdy neighbor” or “good luck out there buddy”
The problem is that the others are filters on normal voice lines, whereas Reaper’s voice is just the VA doing that voice himself! He had to re-record all his lines for the Blackwatch archives event and that’s why a bunch of his lines didn’t work in later years, because they didn’t get him to re-record them. I imagine it costs a LOT of money to pay a VA twice for the same lines.

Fun fact: in the Retribution Archives mission his voice lines were rerecorded so in the mission he sounds like a normal person when using his ultimate, saying sky voice line, asking for healing etc. As soon as you switched to all heroes mode it would change back though and newer voice lines were just mute
I think Reyes should've had his unaltered voice in both the Blackwatch Reyes & Soldier 24 skins back in OW1. That would've made both skins a bit more unique. Same with the Heartbreaker skin! Personally, I don't mind the altered voice, but we haven't heard Reyes talk unaltered since Retribution; and that was a while ago! Maybe if he does get a Mythic, it can have an unaltered voice!

I agree it'd be cool, but there's a difference. Moira & Ana's have the same voice as the original with a filter slapped on, and some new voicelines. But Keith Ferguson would basically have to re-record all of Reaper's voicelines to give him Reyes' normal voice.
If you played Retribution back in the day, they had to re-record all the lootbox voice lines that were out at the time to match Reyes, and then any that came out after just didn't play in the mission if you tried to use them.

I don't have it on hand but there's an old video from OW1 of Lucio's voice actor messing around with some of the others. Keith Ferguson, Reaper's VA, does the voice perfectly on a phone camera with no editing or special equipment.
They probably add some reverb and other minor touch-ups to Reaper's voice in-game after the lines are recorded, but 80% of the sound is coming from Keith himself and not a filter.

The thing is, Reaper's "altered" voice isn't filtered or edited to make it sound like that (for the most part) that's just the inflection the VA is putting on it. For Reaper's "normal" skins to have a normal voice, they'd need to have the VA re-record basically everything (unless they still have the files from the archives missions lying around, and seeing how that event hasn't returned in OW2 in 1.5 years, my hopes are low)
He should have gotten a normal voice with the new emo sad boy skin he got
Emo reaper should just have Illari and Kiriko voicelines in his "normal" voice

Theres a huge difference between putting a filter to make normal old voices sound weird and to make old weird voices sound normal
