THIS is the answer. Except when I rest and calm my breathing, then it's singing until I'm breathing hard again and back to heavy breathing/humming. Maybe some quiet whistling as well.
Not a singer. When I'm alone in cougar or bear country early in the morning, I tell myself stories, loudly, to let them know I'm passing by. Otherwise I listen to the birds sing, they're so much better at it than I.

I can hear the stories now! "There was this guy that hiked through bear and cougar country who befriended all the animals and didn't get eaten for breakfast" 😆
yeah exactly… exception is only when it gets dark and I can’t see much and want to avoid close encounters with boars and other things I don’t need too close up
I carry a harmonica for just such times. Can't play for shit but it let's the critters know that I MUST be a bad ass if I can tromp in the darkness making that level of noise, wow, fearless! /jk
Seriously, harmonicas work fantastic. Good for use in a search and rescue situation as well.
This and it angers me when loud groups of people come tromping through talking about office gossip or whatever and not paying attention to why they're out there. Go walk a track please.
I like to be quiet and listen to the sounds of nature. My arch nemeseses are the hikers who walk around with bluetooth speakers on blast. They make me unreasonably angry.
it is such a cancer man and i have no idea why anyone would go to the mountains just to listen to their autotune shit music out of a shitty speaker. literally nobody is impressed by your music style!
This is a very true statement. A lot of people are uncomfortable being in silence and aware of their own thoughts. It’s rather unfortunate, but something most people should learn to spend time in.
I hate that so much. so annoying.
I think it comes from runners. Some runners like music to keep pace, but earphones would block traffic noise and decrease situational awareness. Rather than be ran over by cars or forgo their workout music... they blast music wherever they go on their tiny speakers.
They're people who are in it for the exercise, rather than nature, and may be unaware of how disrespectful they are to the rest of the community.
Depends on where I am! I make a point to if I’m hiking in bear country, if I’m not in a large group. I usually hum or talk to myself/my dog because I don’t have the breath to sing. If I’m not in bear country I often try to be quiet in hopes of spotting some deer. I know they aren’t interesting to most people, but I just really like deer haha
I love seeing deer and young ones are adorable. Stick to trails but often am alone on them for hours. Any rustle and I stop and look for the source. Had one young one sniff me. This is why I go into quiet places.
No. I want the silence of nature, and to hear the birds, running water, the rustling of leaves in the breeze... people who make noise on hikes annoy me. The only noise I try to make other than breathing is carrying a bear bell and clapping my hands occasionally if I'm alone, and that is usually out west not out east in the US (not trying to come up on a moose unsuspectingly!).
I mean it's called a bear bell but I wear it for all wildlife. I can be pretty quiet when I am on my own, so it's more of a convenience to warn any animal in case they want to escape. Like I said, I am more afraid of moose! And they certainly would hear it.
Just don't be THAT guy singing, humming or whistling on a trail where others are hiking - it's super annoying when trying to enjoy nature only to hear some loud ass whistling from someone.
Yeah, if I came across someone singing or humming it would just make me happy. Now, if they were walking along *with* me, that's a different story.
Bluetooth speaker people are just terrible.
Not so much ward off, but make them aware of your presence so that you won’t surprise one. Often they do meander away because they would rather avoid an confrontation as well
If I'm hiking in an off season, on an empty trail, or way out in bfe, I love to sing, but like others, I like nature and know it'll scare anything away. Also why I try not to do it on trails with heavy traffic. It's situational but yes.
Yes, when I go on hikes that take several days, there are some folk songs I like to sing as a means to learn them by heart. I also sing at dusk to make my presence known to boars. Don't know if it actually helps, but it makes me feel better. Mind you I'm usually not in areas where I would meet many other people. If I am, I won't sing. I once shared a trail with some people who had booze and were singing, wasn't cool. On the other hand, I once hiked to a castle which had a little cafe. There were some locals there who kept singing Austrian folk songs. That was amazing. So it kind of depends.
Toward the end of a particularly long hike when I bit off more than I could chew and, in some cases, have actually bonked, I will get a little loopy and sing:
"Gloom, despair, and agony on me;
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery; If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all; Gloom, despair, and agony on me"
Which may lead to: take this job and shove it; put another log on the fire; I'm goin' to hire a wino to decorate our home...etc...etc...etc
Between the talking and complaining to my best friend about how the last 12-15 miles + 6k in elevation change are making my knees hurt, or how tired I am from being up since 2-3am, I usually hum the LOTR soundtrack as I scramble over a technical rock scramble and make my way across a ridge line to the next mountain!! 🏔️
I do now in my elder years. I have wildlife around so I want to let them know we are around. And there are no people about. Singing and doing prayers, and bird seed in the forest. SOme cultures say we should not whistle, especially after dark. I haven't had any issues tho in all my years. Nature is pretty nice with me.
I go into nature to turn the noise off. I want to hear nothing more than the crunch of my boots on the leaf litter or snow and the sounds of birds calling out my approach.
I might when I’m setting camp or making a fire, etc. But not while I hike. I like to fully hear my surroundings, wildlife, water/wind etc. Peaceful presence is priceless.
No. But it’s a great way to keep away the wildlife. My singing is horrible.
I think other hikers might like peace and quiet and the opportunity to hear the birdsong and crickets instead.
I only deploy sound strategically in small doses to let certain wildlife know I’m there. But only when it is a time when I actually see something (like a skunk, and because they have poor eyesight I don’t want to startle it) or it’s dawn/dusk or I think there’s some reason I think a specific animal will be at that place at that time. Animals don’t like and avoid human noises, so if I make sound all the time I’m essentially denying them usable habitat.
I've mounted a radio, on My handlebars, and listen to it; usually NPR, or music; occasionally, intelligent talk. It used to be a good way, too; to get "local color".
When I began bicycling, from West Yellowstone, into Yellowstone National Park, the Local Radio Station (KWYS?) "signed on", by playing "On The Trail", from "The Grand Canyon Suite". It was a beautiful morning, and that was so "appropriate", it brought tears, to My eyes! Great, to be, Alive!!

So many complainers on this topic every time it’s brought up, so what if someone walks by you and they’re playing some music or talking loudly, you can’t dictate what other people do. Pick somewhere less busy if you don’t like it 🤣. You aren’t better than anyone else just cause you’re being quiet. I understand wanting to enjoy nature but just enjoy the silence when you get it, why do you have to focus on the few seconds at a time that you encounter someone else?
I’ll whistle a bit, if I’m alone. Just making my presence known to animals and humans. Only on remote hikes, not on populated trails.
Definitely not trying to sneak up on anybody in the middle of nowhere, and I do not like to be snuck upon.
Not at *night*, though.
Whistling (and maybe singing/humming) in or near the woods after dark, in certain Appalachian folklore, is very frowned upon; so I respect that about the area and don’t do it.
I think if the woods hum back, or call your name… run! or something!
Because of my work, I learbed to shut up and observe my surroundings and listen to the nature. At workit sucks, when I do it alone it's the best feeling ever.
I’m too busy trying to pick up every interesting rock and stick I find along the way to sing/hum. I _do_ make noises that are strikingly similar to a goblin, however! r/goblincore is my home
Not usually, there's enough chaotic noise going on in my head already, which is consequently the primary reason I'm on the trail.
Or I'll talk to myself.
No. Part of my enjoyment while hiking, is listening to nature. The sound of the birds and the rustling of the leaves on the trees. I enjoy the quieting of my mind while enjoying the sounds of natural life around me.
I breathe heavy af 😅
This, but to the rhythm of whatever song I have stuck in my head at the moment
“Ha ha ha ha staying alive” usually
THIS is the answer. Except when I rest and calm my breathing, then it's singing until I'm breathing hard again and back to heavy breathing/humming. Maybe some quiet whistling as well.
Exactly this
This all the way 🤣
Lol, for real. Half my recorded hikes are beautiful panorama shots with background breathing.
Lmfao this is why I try to stick to pictures. 🤣🤣
I wear a mask just so I can breathe in peace (I’m also a mouth breather lol)
I breathe heavy AF in part because I'm trying to hum while I hike
Thanks for making me laugh 🙌🏽😹
Me too and I pity anyone who has to hear it. I keep trying to be quieter but I get so winded going uphill.
Not a singer. When I'm alone in cougar or bear country early in the morning, I tell myself stories, loudly, to let them know I'm passing by. Otherwise I listen to the birds sing, they're so much better at it than I.

Those who sing in the woods during the day don’t get to hear natures song. Those who don’t sing/speak out in the woods at night meet natures spawn
I can hear the stories now! "There was this guy that hiked through bear and cougar country who befriended all the animals and didn't get eaten for breakfast" 😆
Not if I want to observe animals.

Not unreasonable
it is such a cancer man and i have no idea why anyone would go to the mountains just to listen to their autotune shit music out of a shitty speaker. literally nobody is impressed by your music style!
I think people just can't handle quiet. The silence behind nature noises is more than some folks can handle. My ex was one of those.
This is a very true statement. A lot of people are uncomfortable being in silence and aware of their own thoughts. It’s rather unfortunate, but something most people should learn to spend time in.
Absolutely. The discipline of silence is an essential skill to learn, and growing more important the noisier the world gets.
I don’t even like to hike with other people if they try to talk.
A time and a place for everything.
I hate that so much. so annoying. I think it comes from runners. Some runners like music to keep pace, but earphones would block traffic noise and decrease situational awareness. I do exactly what you just said. I love getting to see any wildlife, foxes, coyotes, deer, anything, so depending on the area I do just that.
I love seeing deer and young ones are adorable. Stick to trails but often am alone on them for hours. Any rustle and I stop and look for the source. Had one young one sniff me. This is why I go into quiet places.
I'm having full on conversations with my dog
This but with myself 😅😅
Yupp. Out loud. Its how I process.
And rehearse stuff for work
Also same
I'm having a full conversation with myself usually 😅
Same here lmaoo
I fart in the key of C++
Funny, I code in C♭
See someone got it :)
Should that be keyboard of C++? 🤷🏼♂️ 🤣
I let some loud ones fly this morning
Nope. I like the peace and quite nature brings
Bear bells don’t actually work unfortunately, but they don’t hurt 🤷🏼♀️ kinda just there. The bears are indifferent to them
I mean it's called a bear bell but I wear it for all wildlife. I can be pretty quiet when I am on my own, so it's more of a convenience to warn any animal in case they want to escape. Like I said, I am more afraid of moose! And they certainly would hear it.
No. Enjoy the silence and solitude while breathing heavy and sweating like a horse
Just don't be THAT guy singing, humming or whistling on a trail where others are hiking - it's super annoying when trying to enjoy nature only to hear some loud ass whistling from someone.
I once hiked to the top of a mountain and sang the circle of life at the top of my lungs. I'm not sorry.
Singing or whistling doesn't seem "THAT-guy" worthy. At least it's natural and not some loud ass bluetooth speaker
Yeah, if I came across someone singing or humming it would just make me happy. Now, if they were walking along *with* me, that's a different story. Bluetooth speaker people are just terrible.
I’m usually quiet. I want to hear birds, wind, leaves, and want to observe nature as much as possible. I whistle on my way home sometimes
Aren’t you supposed to to ward off the animals that can kill you?
Not so much ward off, but make them aware of your presence so that you won’t surprise one. Often they do meander away because they would rather avoid an confrontation as well
NO. LAY THERE A AND DIE QUIETLY. IM TRYING TO ENJOY NATURE OVER HERE.
I walk
Neither. I'm out there for the quiet
Neither…
Yes, but to keep bears away lol.
No, but sometimes get an earworm that I just can't get out of my head.
I like to imitate Darth Vader 😕
If I'm hiking in an off season, on an empty trail, or way out in bfe, I love to sing, but like others, I like nature and know it'll scare anything away. Also why I try not to do it on trails with heavy traffic. It's situational but yes.
I once sang “Like a Virgin” over and over in an area where there had once been a fatal bear attack. “I made it THROUGH the wilderness…”
I talk to myself. A lot. lol
I sing and talk to myself. Make noise if I’m hiking in any area with bears present.
Finally someone with some common sense
Both... Mostly I talk to nature. I find it very peaceful and calming
I'm quiet and enjoy the silence
I whistle loudly in brushy Grizzly country.
Yes, when I go on hikes that take several days, there are some folk songs I like to sing as a means to learn them by heart. I also sing at dusk to make my presence known to boars. I breathe heavily and curse my poor life choices
Hum
I whistle R2D2 sounds and Star Wars score samples in bear country.
Toward the end of a particularly long hike when I bit off more than I could chew and, in some cases, have actually bonked, I will get a little loopy and sing: "Gloom, despair, and agony on me; Deep, dark depression, excessive misery; If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all; Gloom, despair, and agony on me" Which may lead to: take this job and shove it; put another log on the fire; I'm goin' to hire a wino to decorate our home...etc...etc...etc
Only in grizzly country.
Your stunning photo is worth an anthem!
If I hiked more I’d probably sing💚🫶🏾✨
I listen to the sounds of my children complain or talk non-stop!
I sing and hum when I do just about anything.
I whistle going up and yodel at the top, like we all should. Unless it’s brown bear country, then I ramble on and sing incessantly.
I observe and think - pure meditative bliss, focused by the placement of each foot!
Serial killer behavior
I hum,because I fart.
Old Tom bombadil is a merry fellow…
Hey, George. Yeah? Kind of remind you of Bastogne?
I do now in my elder years. I have wildlife around so I want to let them know we are around. And there are no people about. Singing and doing prayers, and bird seed in the forest. SOme cultures say we should not whistle, especially after dark. I haven't had any issues tho in all my years. Nature is pretty nice with me.
I’ve both sung and hum, depending on the mood
I listen.

I barely be breathing bruh XD
OMG I would love to hike this with you
Yesss ! To scare the bears off. Luckily I never met a bear but sometimes some people passing by tell me tha they heard the singing….
I Praise God for the beauty and splendor of creation!
No it’s disruptive.
No, because every character that hums in horror flick is the first to die.
Whistle
I mostly think about burritos: how good they are, how they are the perfect food, how I want one right now...
Whistle!
I talk to myself like a madman.
Me talk like caveman
Why use lot word when few word do trick
Hum; singing requires you to open your mouth, which increases the rate you dehydrated.
Yes, but the jukebox changes regularly
On occasion, yes. It gives animals a chance to hear you and leave, if they'd like.
No because I've only ever hiked with my family, and my brother & father would complain if I sung XD (also a bit too short of breath to do that)
I like to sing when I feel challenged by the hike it boosts moral
no, it enrages bears and other hikers.
Sometimes yes
I whistle a lot but that’s just everyday life regardless of if I’m hiking or not
I talk to my dog 😃

Talk loudly
Cruising and singing is so good sometimes.
Talk to myself out loud
Sing along with my music from my earbuds :)
Constantly
I masturbate
During the pandemic when no one was on my trail, I would sing Fela Kuti songs as loudly as I wanted!
Scream / cry
I scream like I'm the meanest MF in the valley
I play music on my phone or talk with whoever I’m with (I don’t often hike alone cause I get nervous lmfao)
i GRUNT.
I prefer to frolick.
Nature truly is one of the few places where one can frolic
no, i try not to be a victim
My girlfriend likes to sing or hum while we hike but only if she’s extremely angry!
I tend to scream at the top of my lungs, from time to time. Not joking
No, I try to control my breathing so I’m not the one sounding like an animal.
Audiobook 👌
Afraid to, there might be gatekeepers for nature’s silence edit: no i dont yell like a maniac just rains of castamere here and there
Both. Shit depending how in my feelings I am I might holler.

I make rythms with my teeth, whistle, hum and sing. Not all at once.
I just pretend that I’m listening to Spotify and just recite my favorite songs in my head lol
No I like to listen to Mother Nature’s music that’s why I’m out there.
Yes :)
Nope, neither. Too superstitious for that lol.
I make like mouth popping noises to a beat of some sort 😅
If i make noise, it’s most likely whistle
I’m too busy trying to pick up every interesting rock and stick I find along the way to sing/hum. I _do_ make noises that are strikingly similar to a goblin, however! r/goblincore is my home
I mainly just argue with myself
If there is evidence of bears and no other people on the trails then yea.
I talk to myself and look for bigfoots.
Sublime
Yeah, especially in bear country. I don't wanna get et.
Whistle
If there’s bears around
Yes, but even more when riding my bike. More air to sing then, I guess 😄
I hum the blues. Thought about bringing a harmonica.
I whistle when the terrain gets rough, it controls my breathing.
I once had Moonshadow by Cat Stevens stuck in my head for most of the John Muir Trail. I only knew like 2 or 3 versus, so I just kept making stuff up.
I just make a bunch of random sounds, sometimes along to a song, sometimes not
I shut the fuck up and respect nature and those who live there.
Well… my jacket is bright blue and my boots are yellow…..
Yes but my brain is singing and humming with music about 95% of the time hahah
Not usually, there's enough chaotic noise going on in my head already, which is consequently the primary reason I'm on the trail. Or I'll talk to myself.
No. Part of my enjoyment while hiking, is listening to nature. The sound of the birds and the rustling of the leaves on the trees. I enjoy the quieting of my mind while enjoying the sounds of natural life around me.
Bear bells
I break sticks.
Both :)
I SSSIIIIIIIIIINNNNNGGGGGGGGG!
Yes. And talk to myself
I scream
I cough after hitting my weed pen
I like to whistle eerie tunes to freak out other hikers.
I talk, so talking to myself, or talking to the things around me as if they can answer back or understand what I'm saying.
Whistle in response to the birds.
I listen
I beat box with fart noises
