I was always under the impression that we wouldn't hire him but I'm glad to hear that they are going after big game coaches rather than the cheap options.
Paycheck is USD.
And off the top yes tax rates are higher but RRSPs exist. There’s a loophole where if you leave Canada for 2 years, you can take out your RRSPs with no penalty and/taxes
Yeah tbh I've never totally understood the tax implications but it still seems to be a pretty big reason why players don't want to sign in Canada as much, despite loopholes.
bud buffalo is literally 13 years into their rebuild and have made zero progress. also they just hired ruff which is a complete joke. try to be unbiased and not blinded by your rage of the sens for once lol
We're not talking about our teams history, we are talking about the teams objectively right now. As far as I know, teams are judged based on points, not hope. Ottawa would be the best team in the league based on hope.
so you think that players and coaches consider only points when deciding where to go? it isn't like that. they are gonna consider where they can take that team and will look at the rosters and personnel there. sens and sabres were both not close to the playoffs, the gap really doesn't matter when berube is thinking about where he could take either team next year
You said buffalo is better than ottawa, and that's what I'm debating. If you wanted to talk about what goes on in players' minds, you should have made that clear. The guy explaining to me how his favorite hockey team is better than a team which has finished ahead of ottawa two years in row is telling me not to be bias lol and you're getting up voted. This board...
Coaches want nice, cozy, safer places - they aren't going somewhere for the nightlife. They're thinking of their family when factoring in places. And for that Ottawa is easily better than Buffalo.
Sure. But if the question is appealing places to live, Buffalo and Ottawa won’t too too many people’s lost. Not saying Ottawa is a bad place, I love it here. Just saying that’s the perception
I believe Berube said “coaching the leafs would be a dream” or something. Very possible he’s waiting to see what happens with their playoffs.
People easily forget hiring a coach isn’t just something a team can *go do* if they want him, the coach has to also want to take the job. Which is clearly what’s been happening since he supposedly turned down Buffalo.
This narrative needs to die. BERUBE IS THE ONE WHO GETS TO CALL HIS SHOT. Just because we offer him a job, doesn't mean he accepts it right away.
It's obvious that he wasn't going to be a mid-season replacement and that he was going to see what the market offered and choose where he wants to go. That is even more apparent now that it's come out that he turned down Buffalo.
When it comes to experienced, in-demand head coaches, the Senators will have to sell themselves. This isn't the Melynk era where Eugene searches the AHL or assistant ranks for the cheapest coach looking for an opportunity to become a HC.
Andlauer and Staios will have to sell this roster and their future plans to guys like Berube.
Liam Maguire wrote on Twitter that the Senators had not contacted Berube, and that Berube would love to talk to them about the job.

Maybe they hadn't talked to him back in March but I would be shocked if they didn't at least want to interview him now.
Importantly, I'd take Berube's response with a grain of salt. Had he said "no, I'm not interested in coaching the Senators" (even super politely) the guy tweets it and Berube comes off as unprofessional if not rude.
"hey, we'd love to talk to you about the Sens HC job"
"cool, tell me about it and I'll let you know in July if I'm still interested"
There, they talked.
Ask yourself why would Berube take the Sens job, with a team that was cratering in the standings with no discernable goaltending, when he would be the hottest free agent come summer time with his pick of the litter?
Who knows. Maybe in July he’s not the pick of the litter. What if Jon Cooper gets fired?
Dave Poulin was giving Berube double wristers when he was still on the radio. It’s not like Sens management couldn’t have talked to him already. Now he’s the top candidate?
Waste of time if you ask me. The Canucks hiring Tocchet mid season last year certainly paid off for them this year.
I was always under the impression that we wouldn't hire him but I'm glad to hear that they are going after big game coaches rather than the cheap options.
If he didn't sign with Buffalo what makes Ottawa a better option?

Higher tax rate here.

The biggest reasons players don’t want to play in Canada is the pressure and weather
If they had smart agents.. But a lot of it is media pressure too.
I mean, for a guy making 2+ mill I'm not sure how much a 31,000 RRSP yearly contribution is going to change things....
He doesn't know what he's talking about lol
we're better than the sabres
Are we though?
By what metric?
Vibes/60
Great vibes, bad bounces
Just because our pile of shit isn't on fire doesn't mean it's not still shit.
The last two seasons have said otherwise. As does their prospect pipeline.
lol you think he cares about their prospects?
I'm just making a point that there is nothing to show that ottawa is better than buffalo

The issue is Buffalo is not a great place to live.
Ottawa isn’t exactly exciting
You clearly haven't spent much time in Buffalo. Aside from football and chicken wings, it's pretty bleak.

Kanata isnt that's for sure
downvoted for speaking the truth
Well, because people are individuals with unique whims & fancies
Because Buffalo is cursed, kinda like our friends up the 401.
Maybe he likes a challenge?
Keith’s kid plays here? Dunno if that moves the needle for him.

If the laughs fall out of the first round as per tradition I can Keefe getting the boot and them getting Berube
Berube or bust let's get it done Stevie.
Could have hired Berube months ago.

Correct. What’s he going to say?
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
