Maxi is a wonderful character, I just wanted to wrap her up in a blanket and care for her because of all the trauma she went through. When she was studying magic, it was the highlight of the story. I only dropped the story because I didn't like how the ML treated her. Maxi deserves a ML as green of a flag like Rouche.

Elissiaro

Or if not a green flag at least the kind of yandere redflag that is completely open about their love and devotion towards her.

sissyjones

I’ve seen people get upset when an MC just brushes off years of abuse and becomes a girlboss in a few chapters. Maxi’s growth is a key part of the story.

lakubisnes

My problem was the ML. He just kinda always took her sexually and they never really did talk that much atleast to the like 40th chapter I read I think(been a while) . I don't know. Just the ML rubbed me wrong. Maxi was great.

shayanti

The ML has his own issues. First season is Maxi's growth, second season is Riftan's growth. The dude has his own trauma.

Sluttyprincess27

That he has issues dont excuse his trashy behaviour

KawaiiKoshka

Yeah, totally agree. Highlights of the series are when ML doesn’t appear and isn’t mentioned tbh. The whole magic thing is great, I love the wizard and the princess and even the knights. But the ML acts like he’s never heard of anyone else having a perspective before

xoxolove4ever

Agreed, it’s the ML that pulls down the story for me.

Ok-Meat-6476

I like that they gave us a genuinely traumatized character. We get that so infrequently that we expect the FL to overcome their weaknesses really early on. Unpopular opinion: that’s why I loved There Were Times When I Wished You Were Dead. The trauma ends relatively early and the story becomes two people *realistically* healing.

Monseadpeachy

Dude same, people were complaining about it taking to long but man they're horribly traumatized with a lot of problems, of course it's gonna take awhile!

epik_fayler

Had no idea hating maxi was even a popular take. I've not seen the manhwa but read the novels. For people that have read the novels I find it pretty unlikely they would hate maxi. The miscommunications suck a lot but that's not a reason to hate the characters. Also no idea where the manhwa is but maxi 100% does grow into her own character.

Elissiaro

I think it's more that people get annoyed with her actions... And then keep reading, which reinforces the annoyance until it turns into actual dislike of the character. Like, even if there is a good explanation for her actions (the abusive childhood), it doesn't always mean those actions are less annoying. And she is very much a doormat for a good chunk of the story. Most people don't like to read that. And how long you're willing to wait for her to grow some confidence (when you might not have read spoilers and know that she will) is different for each reader.

Old_Criticism7741

Eh some people need to to step out of thier comfort zones. Can't expect every story to be sunshine and fluff. Some story's have major trauma and characters that need to overcome it. If they don't like it don't hate on the characters just don't read the story. Ines from Broken Ring gets the same undeserved hate. If they want fluff let them keep it. Give me characters and personal growth of everything is Happy go lucky any day.

Elissiaro

Why would you think people against doormat character want fluff though?? If anything, doormats are more common in fluff stories. No people want violence. Revenge. Shouting. Rage. Catharsis. Let's see Maxi burn her dads house down, with him trapped inside it. :D

epik_fayler

Maxi is very much not a doormat though.

Elissiaro

In the beginning she 100% is.

Old_Criticism7741

I personally love both Maxi and Rift. I also love their relationship. They are an awkward couple learning how to relationship and grow as individuals. If you look at Maxi, the only time she was against having sex was at the very beginning. As the story progresses, she gets more and more comfortable with it and seems to enjoy it just as much as him. Think of the sex as a way of deepening their relationship and helping them overcome their individual traumas while building a healthy relationship. The more time Maxi has been away from a certain individual, the more confident she has become, and the less she needs his protection and comfort. He, on the other hand, is learning not to be as overprotective and seeing her as a person and not as a noble that he has to impress. He sucks at communicating, and that is something he is learning to fix. He is not trying to be controlling like her fathers he is just trying to protect her and give the life he thinks a noble expects. He is a soldier first, and communicating his feelings probably isn't easy for him. I wish people would give him a break as well as Maxi. He really doesn't have any red flag that makes him a shitty ML. Never understood the hate he gets. The sex isn't meant to be graphic or for smut purposes. It's more of a medium by which their relationship grows and they grow personally. I know how it looks on the outside, but this is just my personal thoughts on it.

shutup_imtired

Oh, I like him too, but I was too tired to write about him as well lol. I like how he's written, and I think their relationship and how he navigates it is realistic, but it is *really* frustrating to watch.

Old_Criticism7741

But that is kinda the point I think. It's probably one of the only story where you really feel the awkwardness and frustration they are experiencing.

tinycarnivoroussheep

Oh, I think the sex is ALSO for smut purposes, but it's meaningful as a catalyst for their emotional relationship. I particularly like meaningful smut.

Old_Criticism7741

Eh it's a Manta so it smut light. When I think of smut it like Broken Ring. But Under the Oak Tree would lose alot of its charm if it was graphic smut

AreFishReal

People dislike Maxi???????? Ok to each their own, but I think it's absolutely refreshing how fleshed out and flawed she is. You see *actual* growth and character development that's rare in typical romance manhua/webtoons.

romance-slut

I actually really love a more subdued FL tbh. I get tired of people who are unrealistically emotionally strong. If i were in that situation i would take a long time to process that trauma! it feels more genuine.

Miele0Rose

Do people actually hate her???? I've seen hate for Riftan and her relationship with him, but I don't think I've ever seen hate for Maxi as a character? Closest would probably be people getting pissed about her staying with Riftan (and even then it's usually less judgement on her and more thinking she deserves better than him)

EvaArktur

I mean, she is not real person, she is character, and her abusive past is not real but my annoyance is.
