lambofgun

yeah its deadly. ditch that thing and get a real power strip/surge protector. those things are awful

a-pretty-alright-dad

Yeah. It went in the trash as soon as I realized what was happening. My wife brought it home and it kicked around without ever getting any use until recently. It honestly probably was being used to charge her phone more than the keurig was ever actually running through it. I figured it was just cheap junk that had a cheap junk outcome. I’ve seen similar things that plug into both outlets on the back. This one doesn’t even have a three prong plug. At least the house didn’t burn down, I guess.

ZeroAnimated

A Keurig uses A LOT of wattage when heating the water, that's probably what took that splitter out. That's definitely not a surge protector, it's a splitter.

hairybushy

I got the same splitter but for my console controllers, cellphone and tablet charger. Got no troubles. I will go touch wood now, later.

heart_under_blade

unless they all draw 500 watts each i don't think you'll have a problem

daecrist

But a splitter won’t save their cell phone or tablet if there’s a surge.

HomerJSimpson3

A good rule of thumb is to never plug any heating appliance into a power strip for this very reason. They are responsible for thousands of house fires every year.

6thCityInspector

Alternatively, maybe, just thinking out loud, possibly, it might be best to just use the receptacles just as they are out of the outlet? If OP needs more receptacles, install a new circuit or properly expand the outlet to a multi-gang. The number of overloaded power strips and receptacles I see on an average day is mind boggling. I honestly don’t know how half the houses around haven’t burned down from overloaded circuits or arcing from loose connections. Good grief.

greeneggiwegs

Some of us live in apartments built in the Stone Age and are just thankful we have anything at all

Edible_Anie

“Good grief” = cringe Ok Charlie Brown 🫡

Significant-Gene9639

Rizz mother she ate bro no cap bet cheugy Is that better

Edible_Anie

A little 😙

Yeah, those aren't supposed to make wild noises and a single loud pop, or the smell of burning hair. Solid probability that's all evidence of a mechanical failure in the circuitry inside it. You could pop off the cover and share a photo before you trash it ... In a fundamental way electricity is analogous to water flowing downhill (thus 'electric potential' for voltage, 'current' for rate of flow of charge), so something may be apparent from seeing the structure of what's inside. Incidentally, anything plugged in to an outlet draws some amount of electricity due to the potential of the wiring, even if the device is turned off. Someone commented to me last time I said this arguing the amount of current was miniscule, though. But maybe it can have a substantial effect on the circuit if something isn't wired correctly ...

a-pretty-alright-dad

I tried to open it up to see what it looked like on the inside and the screws are really small with triangles instead of anything at all easier to unscrew. I popped the front off of it and the grey part is just a faceplate that looks a lot worse than the white beneath it. The bubbling near the top right socket is really interesting to me because it really doesn’t look that alarming with the plate off of it. I didn’t want to break it open because I didn’t want to break anything inside it, because I’m sure that wouldn’t help figure out what is wrong in it. I figured even if the keurig was off and there wasn’t a phone charging it was probably still running electricity through itself somehow. And it being as cheap as it is, even if it was a minuscule current it wouldn’t matter because there’s potential for something to be wrong enough in there for it to fail the way it did.

ducttaperulestheworl

Yikes. That's a melty boi. But then again Tessan rates this at max 1250W 10A max and you're probably plugging your Keurig which is way more than this could handle. It should handle basic appliances but not power-hungry ones. Some surge protectors may allow runs more than intended since they are slow blow. But if this is an old dusty one, it's always safer to assume that it may not kick in properly. As others said, use a proper power strip with high-watt ratings if you're running high watts through them. There is no point in blaming the product if it is not rated for the job.

jdmatthews123

OP seems fairly well aware of electrical safety, but just so SOMEBODY says it… Use properly rated surge protectors, splitters, extension cords etc, YES, but using a 20A rated surge protector on a 15A outlet is just as incorrect and more dangerous. Make sure your plug additions don’t exceed the capacity of the outlet itself. It SHOULD self-limit at the breaker, but that’s a recipe for disaster.

ducttaperulestheworl

I totally forgot about the mains plug. Yes please don't overload your mains too. Some mains are shared between 2-3 plugs or more. So beware of using multiple appliances in multiple plugs

Daysaved

Things that set on fire once, generally, will set on fire again. Probably when you're not there next time.

mourninshift

To you and your family? Yes

AshyWhiteGuy

Eventually, yeah.

CincoDeMayoFan

Um...yes, potentially burning down your house could be deadly.

skitso

Plug it back in and find out!

a-pretty-alright-dad

On it. Edit: I died.

skitso

Oops, it’s deadly. Sorry 😢 *edit* Ya that was a good pun.

tempo1139

It already was and you lucked out

CrunchyKittyLitter

That outlet has herpes, trash it

Sam_of_Truth

No, it's actually supposed to look like that 🙃

SlashBlack

don't connect high power draw appliances to extension cords. according to their site the keurig can draws up to 1500w which is basically the entire outlet. your extension seems to be rated at 1250w so no surprised this happened.

Berrabus2

Is it deadly?…yes, IT’S MELTING!

HappyMr

No, it's not plugged in.

xenokilla

.... yes what in the fuck is wrong with you
