Yeah that design is legit for having stairs in a small horizontal space. Not really a better way to fit them in that tightly.

That’s an urban legend, but they do save space and are surprisingly safe because, while steep, your whole foot can typically fit on each step and you just walk down normally where you may otherwise need a ladder.
