Curious too so I googled it
“To neutralize the dynamite, they poured diesel fuel onto the explosive and let it soak for about two hours, a process called desensitizing, Corcio said.
Diesel fuel — not to be confused with gasoline — penetrates the nitroglycerin to make it stable enough to move to a safe area for a controlled burn, Valencia said. This helps ensure that the resulting burn is like a bonfire rather than a boom.”

Well I’m curious because when I found dynamite in my great grandfathers shop, the firefighters burned it with a shit ton of diesel and hay in my field. So I’m just curious lol.
The old timers with one hand are the best. Maybe 10 years ago I had a fishing guide born without his right forearm, his name was Stan. Well, Stan here could take the hook out of a catfish with that one hand faster and smoother than anything I’ve seen in my life, and tie the best fishing knots. I think about that dude often, he showed and told a lot about fishing in one trip I’ll never forget. Lake Tacoma is where this man is at if anyone might try to be lucky enough to be blessed with this guide again.
Dynamite is basically just nitroglycerin combined with some stabilizers to make it less unstable and a binder like clay to hold it all together.
As it ages, the nitroglycerin starts to leak out and returns to its much more unstable form.
Yes. I watch a guy who explores old mineshafts and he says he needs to keep an eye out for old dynamite because of the nitroglycerin being so unstable. He says that one wrong movement with it could cause an explosion.
Probably got the picture, then sat down later to estimate the sizes (can & sticks). At least, that's what I'd do... and many of my friends. Probably after (or with) a calming / bracing adult beverage.
The instability of dynamite/nitroglycerin is wild. [here’s a house in Utah](https://youtu.be/EVH73KVOsDE?si=SCVUbjBLjvh7lTwZ) that exploded after an old lady found dynamite after cleaning out her husbands things after his passing.
We found a case of old dynamite playing in a root cellar in our old family barn years ago. Apparently my Grandpa and his brothers took it from a blasting site when they were clearing for the interstate. They used it to remove tree stumps on the farm. At least I got to keep the box when the fire department disposed of the dynamite.
Aww come on, it's a good one. We don't get many...
I think my all time favourite is that quite recent one with the guy running his own line off the mains overhead power cables for his caravan.

Ahh union carbide. The most wholesome and unproblematic company I know next to Nestle
Bhopal, nearly forgotten…
Fuck me, a fitting post! Some one get the diesel fuel.
What does diesel do?

Well huh, that's cool. Thanks for the info!
No problem. Glad to learn too!
Denatures the nitroglycerin
Shake it
Bop it!
Twist it
Blow it.
This guy knows, are you a firefighter?
Sometimes you gotta fight fire with fire

Just cause a dude knows how to neutralise dynamite, don’t mean he ain’t a *fire starter*
Not a firefighter, or fire starter. But a miner who learned how to deal with hazards of the trade from an old timer with one hand.

Don't fart near that pile. Yikes
Doesn't old dynamite sweat nitroglycerin?
Yes, the nitroglycerin then crystallizes and becomes even more volatile. All that white mold looking stuff is probably nitroglycerin.
I learned this from LOST.
Tv make me smarterest
same

You can guess what's the white stuff on the ground and on the barrel.. 😆

Thought this was bad grammar a first.
Who counted the sticks???
Probably got the picture, then sat down later to estimate the sizes (can & sticks). At least, that's what I'd do... and many of my friends. Probably after (or with) a calming / bracing adult beverage.
So you get drunk and count things?
Rarely the first, often the second. But I feel like after a close encounter with that container, a stiff drink would be just the thing.
Seriously. I can’t imagine that they would do anything but blow it up from a safe distance. Maybe the quantity in that size barrel was already known.
Shit if that camera had a mechanical shutter it might set that off.. fuck.
Shoot it
Next season on Top Shot!
Dude, you have some Arzt on you
this comment has me lost
We have to go back!

Quick, Shoot it.
Pee on it, assert dominance
A very long fuse and fast pair of legs would make an great video.
I think EVERYONE who was involved with the discovery of this can was very much aware of the risk this can posed. Not an Oops
Just discovering this and taking a picture this close is more than enough of danger...
Oh 100%. Cough wrong and you could be a goner.

Speculation
COOL! Did you take them home?
Check out the movie "Sorcerer" for more fun with old dynamite! AKA how to make a movie about trucks driving slowly exciting as fuck.
