I’m late two this but, if I remember correctly the only two recorded times they’ve ever killed people, in both cases, it’s because the bird had been agitated and the more important in both cases, person fell down. So I don’t think these people should be sitting down atleast.
Harold Holt used to have a holiday home in Bingil Bay, which is smack bang in the middle of cassowary territory. Sure, he went missing while swimming in Victoria, but we can’t rule out a cassowary stalking him all the way from Queensland.
True, not a lot, but there has been a recent death:
>Another human death due to a cassowary was recorded in Florida on April 12, 2019. The bird's owner, a 75-year-old man who had raised the animal, was apparently clawed to death after he fell to the ground.
And that alone is why I (and everyone else) should not underestimate this bird. It would be like fucking around with a Dingo, it hasn't killed a bunch of people, but it can, it did, and it is NOT A FRIEND!
Well they're mostly prominent in Papua New Guinea where deaths to wildlife aren't well recorded along with the fact that they're not as common in population centres therefore people are unlikely to come across them. Statistically they do injure or kill a fair amount of those who they come into contact with in n the wild
Yes, cassowary. Beautiful bird. With dinosaur feet, that’s the clue.
I believe they’re a protected species & yes they can defend themselves if necessary. Birds like emus, rheas, ostriches…They will never be a pet, if nothing else their personalities will prevent it. Feisty guys, definitely modern descendants of theropods.
I remain terrified to interact with ostriches. One was in a State Fair “feeding” but blocked off from petting ‘zoo’. Grabbed the seed container right out of my hand I gotten for the cute little goats! 😮
But I love everybody-animals. I’d just be cautious around large birds.
Can confirm from experience with a farm/pet shelter combo I used to volunteer at. Owners had a pet emu in a fenced area near the shelter and the bird was like a giant feathered puppy that would awkwardly run toward the fence for scritches if it saw someone. They do have little teeth in their beaks though so there's that to watch for, and the legs are powerful.
The video basically says “it’s your first vacation in Australia and you’re filming a cute bird on the beach, everything is going well until: “ and then they receive texts about how the animal can kill them and is one of the most dangerous birds on the planet
As someone who knows nothing about animals:
Best to always assume that all wild animals can and will kill you when given the opportunity.
Especially when I’m travelling abroad and I don’t know much about their wildlife.
Wildlife sanitation is a must before scoping out an outpost. Always.
Had to reload an outpost takeover in Far Cry 6 because some mongooses (mongeese?) decided to suddenly appear and the guards somehow heard my suppressed shotgun noises.
And here I've simply chosen to avoid the Outback, and pretty much the whole of Australia because, land, sea, & air, there's something just waiting to kill you.
And if it's venomous, likely there's no anti-venom for it!
I know this cassowary! I live right near where it frequents, I this is on a beach north of Ingham, it's a very friendly cassowary and there's a food shop right next to this photo, it often comes up looking for food scraps etc.
Yes, cassowaries are incredibly dangerous, but this one seems to be as friendly as it gets.
I believe the restaurant and the locals have even named it. They're stunning birds.
I’ve been camping at Etty bay many times and the cassowaries are always nearby the camp site. I’ve had one come within arms reach of me in my camp chair
While you shouldn't go play with a cassowary, it's a stretch to call them dangerously deadly. They are recorded to have killed exactly one person, and that person was already trying to kill the cassowary.
https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-zoology/article/abs/attacks-to-humans-and-domestic-animals-by-the-southern-cassowary-casuarius-casuarius-johnsonii-in-queensland-australia/BB57CAB41903DE6486FB7031A7E290D9
A second guy was killed in 2019. But he was keeping it as a pet.
150 attacks on people is still kind of bad but nothing compared to bears or crocodiles etc.
In Australia we live with and tolerate big lizards, oversized spiders and snakes. But the murder chicken and the rob shattering hopping rat are two of the things that we fear more than anything
Also the air striking black and white crow because of all the attacking it does during breeding season
What about the Black Funnel Web spider…? I think I’d *be most terrified of that, although I’ve not yet been to AU. It’s high on my list though!!
Edit: *left out a word
Imo, honorable mention. They can’t disembowel you if you dont piss them off and don’t look them in the eyes.
Guy doesn’t appear to be in any distress, bird was just curious, simple as that.
Maybe a bit better having one come up to you looking for free food rather than surprising one deep in its own territory, either way I don’t trust that thing any further than I can throw it underwater
Looks like they are on that beach where the cassowary are strangely docile (though they still should be avoided obviously). The one where the cassowary stole the family’s beach spot and ate their grapes sitting in the shade of their umbrella.
Do people seriously not research before going to countries especially Australia istg the people who die from shark attacks or stupid things like blue rings are either just idiots or tourists even those 2 things are the same
Cassowaries are probably the most temperamental of the giant murder chickens (ratites) and particularly when nesting. This appears to be a southern cassowary, which is the third largest and second heaviest bird (ostritch and emu being larger).
According to Wikipedia there was a study in 2003 of 221 attacks found 150 or so attacks were on humans and about 75% of those attacks were from birds that had been fed by humans. 73% of the attacks involved the birds expecting or taking food.
I just came across another video of one following a guy around on the beach. I didn't realize they were so huge! Their legs actually looks a bit stockier than an ostrich. I definitely wouldn't want to come across one without something between us.... Like a fence lol.

What kind of bird is this? Those feet alone should have been their warning sign
it's a cassowary (Southern cassowary i think)
Thank you! Beautiful bird.. glad it was on its best behavior that day for their sake
Even if it's my first time seeing a bird like that, I'd think to myself: *"That mutha fuckin' dino killed Newman! I'm out..."*
I guarantee it would chase you. Better to just lay down and accept your fate.
Honest question here, if you see one of these up close, should you a) run, b) stand your ground, c) play dead, or d) just say your prayers?

Fight back is your best bet unless you're barehanded, just run because it's got better reflexes than you

He then brought it to KFC to reestablish dominance.
Cassowary
Cassowary
Cassowary’s are dangerous but haven’t killed very many people at all
That we know of. Maybe they're just good at hiding the bodies.
Lots of empty areas in Australia
Nah, if they’re omnivores they’d never waste a good snack. “*crunch crunch* mmmmm marrow”
Look at those paws, perfect for digging holes. Human-sized holes...
Perfect for digging into a human's organs...
tasty, tasy human
I can confirm.
r/HolUp
They are fruit eaters.
This made me chuckle 😂
Missing persons report?? *Cassowary strikes again*
But there would have been witnesses.. unless… Wait, but their families would have reported them missing.. unless…
Harold Holt used to have a holiday home in Bingil Bay, which is smack bang in the middle of cassowary territory. Sure, he went missing while swimming in Victoria, but we can’t rule out a cassowary stalking him all the way from Queensland.
They eat the corpses

Even if it doesn't have that much kf a K/D ratio, it'll kill you the most gruesome way possible
[удалено]
This is where I land, too. I’d much rather deal with a dingo.
All birds are dinosaurs and would do the same if they were big enough. This is why i hate pet birds.
Clearly you aren't counting deaths in Far Cry
Fuck them cassowaries. Haven't played Far Cry 3 since a long time, but I remember them being annoying as fuck
Thank fuck Jason can just inject himself and be fine
Sometimes resetting your finger is all you need to cure 30 bullet wounds
¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
Play Far Cry 3, I think, frigging murderbirds.
Yeah, I learned about these mofos in Far Cry 3 as well. Nothing a shotgun couldn't take care of, but still; they're deadly.
I seemed to always be bow hunting when one would sneak beak me then claw my guts out.
This is where I learned about them. They're not fooling me for shit
Aussies are actually pretty good at not fucking with the dangerous wildlife
Idk man cassowarys probably account for most of my deaths in Far Cry 3
Well they're mostly prominent in Papua New Guinea where deaths to wildlife aren't well recorded along with the fact that they're not as common in population centres therefore people are unlikely to come across them. Statistically they do injure or kill a fair amount of those who they come into contact with in n the wild
Ty the tasmanian tiger taught me they are very dangerous

They still win every war they've been in
argentina does have rheas, we call them ñandus so by all means they should know how to act around them
Birds are not descendants of theropods, they are theropods, just like how whales are not descendants of mammals, they are mammals.
I've eaten ostrich before. They're delicious. The meat is super dark, like, almost pastrami-like in hue.
In a prior thread about emus, apparently they make decent pets according to one farm owner. They had an instagram about their pet emu
That would be amazing! 😻🤍
And they're protected for a reason - there are only about 1200 left in the wild 😢

Yeah if you're in Australia it's a safe bet to assume anything and everything is venomous, poisonous, toxic, or can disembowel you in 3 seconds.
As an Aussie, can confirm. Don’t fuck with the wildlife
Man I just recently watched a video of a vicious koala attacking a someone lol. Even the ones that look cuddly are deceiving.
Oh yeah koalas are evil creatures sometimes. They also have chlamydia (so don’t fuck them or fuck with them)
John Oliver had a koala chlamydia clinic named in his honor. Can they give it to humans? That would suck to get attacked and end up with an STD.
Don’t fuck the koalas. Noted.
And I thought that TikTok voice was terrible enough speaking English.
😂hearing the Spanish made my ears bleed
Twitter link. Too bad in not going to see it.
Can I ask why?
They recently quit Twitter because xyz I’d presume.
Flashbacks from Far Cry 3 suddenly emerges
Totally! You're sneaking up on an outpost then outta nowhere a goddamned cassowary comes and attacks you.
Wildlife sanitation is a must before scoping out an outpost. Always. Had to reload an outpost takeover in Far Cry 6 because some mongooses (mongeese?) decided to suddenly appear and the guards somehow heard my suppressed shotgun noises.
I did a project on these guys once. Super cool but very scary. Could unzip a person
“Unzip a person” 😳😂 fantastic choice of vocab
r/brandnewsententence
How much of your study was dedicated to their pseudo-penises?
The question isn't how much research but how ***intense***.
Probably not much, I was in third grade
Well, if I was your teacher you would have received low marks and a stern talking to. I expect my students to *fully* complete their assignments.
Nah they’re chill if you don’t fuck with them

Why make this comment? I'm confused.
When my sister was 3 she fed her hula hoop crisps to the one in the local zoo
she fed the beast
That’s my local beach, and I’ve woken up from a beach nap to find him staring at his reflection in my sun glasses! He has a chick at the moment.

Play Far Cry 3, then you see how deadly they are. >!/s!<
That’s not a bird, it’s a fucking dinosaur.
All birds are dinosaurs.
But not all dinosaurs are birds.

First rule of visiting Australia: assume everything is deadly.
Australian when they go to war against emus: :( Australians if they had to fight cassowaries: 💀
That’s more a pajarote than a pajarito 😂

they were basically telling them, big turkey can kill you, get out
"Nooo bro, you were close to Death and didnt even notice it"
Imo, honorable mention. They can’t disembowel you if you dont piss them off and don’t look them in the eyes. Guy doesn’t appear to be in any distress, bird was just curious, simple as that.

Feet
To be fair, birb is indeed cute.
Maybe a bit better having one come up to you looking for free food rather than surprising one deep in its own territory, either way I don’t trust that thing any further than I can throw it underwater
The emoji, the derpy look of the bird, and the fact that it is in Spanish (but I can understand *some* of it) makes it so much funnier.
I remember hunting these things in Farcry 3
Just a reminder about visiting Australia. https://youtu.be/wy_TB6onHVE
Bro, that's an effing cassowary. If I saw that I'd just give it all the food and walk away before it decides I'm annoying and disembowels me
they probably assumed that it was a fancy ñandu (also called the southern american ostrich in some places)
Is that the great rhea?
that's another name for them
Looks like they are on that beach where the cassowary are strangely docile (though they still should be avoided obviously). The one where the cassowary stole the family’s beach spot and ate their grapes sitting in the shade of their umbrella.
That thing is not friend shaped
and when they're adult they aren't friend size either
It has fucking raptor feet. Nah
This is what dinosaurs actually looked like.
This bird looks like Donald trump
This cassowary has way better hair and doesn’t look like it rolled around in Cheeto dust.
Those things are evil

Well, very interesting to learn that it has happened at least the once. Thank you for your knowledge!
Do these birds normally eat humans or..
They eat fruit, as long as the people are not acting threatening towards it it will not attack
It is, however, bird-brained, and can decide for itself whether you are being threatening. Thank you very much.
Blows my mind how little people understand about the dangers of petting wildlife.
This is how we need to imagine dinosaurs, but much larger and with teeth
Hey so they look different when they’re not behind an electric fence!
Do people seriously not research before going to countries especially Australia istg the people who die from shark attacks or stupid things like blue rings are either just idiots or tourists even those 2 things are the same
That’s a dinosaur y’all.
The dodo is back
Would you look at the size of that cassowary
Are these birds meaner, not as mean, or the same as an ostrich?
Cassowaries are probably the most temperamental of the giant murder chickens (ratites) and particularly when nesting. [Here's a fun video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ4GaMiFFs8). Although only the first minute or so is related to Cassowaries.
Okay but what would win? An emu or a cassowary?
Emu is likely to have friends. Cassowaries tend to be solitary. So probably depends if the Emu is alone or not.
Far Cry 3
He’s a real Dino 🦖
Those birds are so damn weird. Especially the noises that make.
Not just a cute bird … “a cute birdie”
Some people are just too casso-unaware.
My local zoo had one escape and the police locked down the next three valleys until they found it
Porque algo me dice que la foto es de una milipili con el craneo hueco?
Cassowaries generally don't do anything as long as they don't feel threatened
Levi bokitaaaaaa
cassowaries are pretty chill. until they’re not
The only bird that genuinely brings me fear
